About 40 people were gathered at noon Friday for the dedication of a time capsule at Hamilton Township’s War Memorial Park when they heard a scream. A car had struck a bicyclist at Main Street and Route 50.
Bystanders rushed across the street to find the injured man – Kenneth Pierce, 32, of Mays Landing – trapped beneath the car.
“It‘s one of those things you couldn’t believe happened,” said Chris Groome, owner of Brownies Squared Bake Shop on Main Street.
Groome was walking down the sidewalk from his bakery to take part in the time-capsule dedication when he saw a car strike the bicyclist on Main Street. Police say the car’s driver was Charles Kelly, 58, of Mays Landing.
“I saw a car turning right toward the light and knocking over a guy on a bike,” Groome said. “The driver must not have known what happened, because he kept driving and ended up running over the guy.”
The bicycle and its rider were dragged 75 feet by the car before it stopped, police said. Groome quickly tried to find help.
“I ran across the street to a cafe and said to call 911,” he said.
By the time he returned outside, bystanders had surrounded the vehicle. Above the murmur of the crowd, Groome heard Pierce’s desperate plea, “Get it off! Get it off!”

Posted on January 1, 2011 at 4:55pmI’ve been a distance bike rider (the Nixon gas rationing days) and now I drive over 200 miles a day for my job (I am paying for the gas). All I can say is that is so cool. I wish we could all pull the same way over other issues.

Posted on January 1, 2011 at 3:11pmNow Frances Piven, this is how America reacts in the face of crisis, not blaming other people but doing what needs to be done. Good job people

Posted on January 1, 2011 at 11:17amNow that was an ‘all volunteer’ first responders. It‘s a good thing they didn’t wait for the fire department. There are some fire departments in America that will stand around and watch because of some stupid government regulation.

Posted on January 1, 2011 at 11:12amGod Bless the Garden State residents for helping this poor guy; although being a former Atlantic City resident I hope none of the Jersey good Samaritans relived him of his wallet before freeing him from under the car.

Posted on January 1, 2011 at 10:45amAn intelligent assessment was made and action was taken at a moment’s notice. The bicyclist would have died had big government bureaucracy become involved.

Posted on January 1, 2011 at 10:18amIf you ride a bicycle, stay the hell out of the streets. Whoever decided it was a good idea to put cyclists on the same roads a speeding hunks of metal was probably a do-gooder eco-freak.
It is the single most stupid thing you can do when riding a bike.

Posted on January 1, 2011 at 10:30amYeah, only the government could think cars + bikes is safer than bikes + pedestrians.

Posted on January 1, 2011 at 10:36amIt is illegal to ride on the sidewalk. Those of us who use bicycles for transportation need to ride on the streets. I ride for exercise, to save money on gas, I don’t need to look for parking places, I am closer to nature, and i need to stay in shape for the 150 mile bike ride for leukemia and lymphoma society.

Posted on January 1, 2011 at 10:07amNo matter what BHO and the Progressives say, America is a great country and we take care of our own. Anytime there is a natural disaster in the heartland the people are the ones getting out to help out, not the Government.

Posted on January 1, 2011 at 11:07amWonderful to see that Americans are still showing the greatest spirit of caring and unity around; the people are what makes our land the greatest in the world, the willingness to help out those we do not know or have any relation with.
Indeed as you say, in America we flip cars to save lives; in europe they torch them out of anger.
Great story, and a way to start off the new year with help and a rescue.

Posted on January 1, 2011 at 1:11pmMy husband is a avid bike rider.. and I worry even though we live by a 30 mile long trail it cuts through towns.. THANK GOD the people thought quick.. Americans are the BEST people in the world when it comes to HELPING each other.. I do have to point out one fact that no one thought of.. sometimes when something like this happens lifting the pressure off if there is a deep gash in an artery and the weight is making it so they don’t bleed to death to do what they did might not have such a good result.. HOWEVER.. THIS was NOT one of those cases.. everything worked out fine.. therefore DON‘T let anyone tell you AMERICAN’S can’t do something we can do WHATEVER we put our minds to..

Posted on January 1, 2011 at 5:43pm@RightWright – what an inspiring story! God is great! I hope you keep telling your brother’s story and giving God the glory. He put all those people just in those places “for such a time as this” and they were David’s angels and the very hands of God to keep him alive.
