CA Assemblywoman Charged With Shoplifting $2500 Worth of Merchandise

A Democratic California Assemblywoman is denying charges that she attempted to steal $2500 worth of merchandise from a San Francisco department store. Mary Hayashi has been charged with felony grand theft as security officers say she was caught on video stealing from a Neiman Marcus store. A spokesman for the Castro Valley Democrat defended the legislator, telling the Sacramento Bee:
“Sam Singer, spokesman for Hayashi, said the arrest occurred after she left the store while using her cellular phone.
‘The incident in San Francisco was a mistake and a misunderstanding,’ Singer said. ‘The assemblywoman strongly believes in the justice system and is hopeful that this matter will be cleared up soon.’”
The Bee reports that security officers put the lawmaker under citizen’s arrest outside the store after she left without paying for clothing items. KCRA on the alleged misunderstanding:
Hayashi plead not guilty Thursday in San Francisco Superior Court and is free on $15,000 bail pending further proceedings Nov. 15. Maximum sentence is three years in prison for grand theft, but first-time offenders typically do not receive such stiff sentences, said Assistant District Attorney Omid Talai, spokesman for the San Francisco DA’s office to the Bee. Singer told the Bee that while Hayashi is embarrassed and apologizes for any misunderstanding, she has no intention of resigning from office.
The 45-year-old is not up for reelection as she is scheduled to be termed out of office next year. She is due back in court on Nov. 15, when a preliminary hearing will be set.

The more immigrants we allow to this country the worse it gets and the more our county is turning into a 3rd world wasteland as they use and abuse our system and hospitality. Boycott all foreign businesses, foreign products, and foreign employees to the best of your ability. Americans need to band together and take our country back!

Posted on November 2, 2011 at 8:36pmA lot of truth to what you say. The volume of immigrants distorts our culture and allows them to perpetuate there own cultures rather that adapting to ours. Many cultures do not value truth and honesty and are bringing cultures of corruption into the mainstream here. As far as prisons are concerned, I would support encampments in the desert with just the basic necessities. Those imprisoned should have to do all the work to support the prisons except for guarding the perimeter. There is no reason why prisoners should have any more provided to them than our troops have.

Posted on November 2, 2011 at 11:30amNot sure how Neiman-Marcus works (I can‘t afford to shop there and wouldn’t if I could. Overpriced at best) but normally when people shop for clothing they take something off the rack (including hanger), drape it over their arm and carry it around while looking for other items. Then they move to the fitting room….try on the items, give the attendant the things they don’t want to buy and carry items they wish to purchase (again, draped over their arm) to the cash register or continue shopping.
How in the heck do you “accidentally” leave the store with merchandise draped over your arm? And how is it a “misunderstanding” when you do?

The insignificant rules of society like theft are for the little people, not for an elite like her. Surely there must be some mistake, laws against shoplifting are meant for the serfs and peasants and were never meant to be aplied to her.

I don’t care if she was on the phone for an emergency or not… If she needed to leave then she needed to drop the unpaid items she had or ask a store clerk to hold them for her while she made arrangements for someone else to pay for them for her. Exiting a department store with unpaid items for any reason is unacceptable. She should be made to resign and I don’t give a damn what excuse she or her attorney or representatives come up with. She is a shoplifter and she got caught.
Report Post »This is just one of the tactics I was trained to watch for when I last worked in retail and this isn’t any different than what Lindsay Lohan tried to pull with $2500 worth of jewelry. Just because they try to act like it’s okay or normal to walk out without paying does not make it right or legal. This woman knows better and anyone who buys into her story is an accomplice or an idiot. Embarrassed, yeah I’ll just bet she is.
