SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) — Something stinks in Orange County. It’s an attack ad mailed by Republican Congressional candidate Van Tran that paints a picture of incumbent Democratic lawmaker Loretta Sanchez as an insider politician. Tran’s campaign manager George Andrews told the Orange County Register the mailer looks like a perfume ad and features a scratch-and-sniff patch that is supposed to smell like trash.
The ad says: “It’s the stench of Washington.”
Sanchez’s campaign manager Caroline Hogan said the mailer is a gimmick in poor taste and the congresswoman has been campaigning on issues of importance to local families.
Sanchez is facing the first serious challenge to her seat since she was elected in 1996.

Posted on October 27, 2010 at 12:54pmThough the concept is amusing, I can’t see this tactic as actually being an effective tool. It could be counterproductive as most people hate SPAM and a political mailing that also “stinks” just amplifies this distaste back towards the sender.

Posted on October 27, 2010 at 10:46amNOT dirty politics at all. Very clever in fact. I’m glad our idea was adopted by this GOP candidate. Helps make all politics smell. People are sick of it. They will come to us for clean smells.

Posted on October 27, 2010 at 9:48amI’m an Independent Conservative. Mr. Tran needs to drop out of the race because there isn’t room for him in the Republican party. Except for a few, the Republican party actually stands for something.
You are no better than Mr. Grayson in Florida, Mr. Tran. You both need to stay away from public office. America doesn’t need individuals full of hatred and devious actions. Our country is worth much more than that.

Posted on October 27, 2010 at 8:51amThe left are experts at calling everything that stands up to them names and ignorant. There is nothing dirty about listing positions your opponent supports, things they have voted for, and showing why they are evil and vile.

Posted on October 27, 2010 at 8:39amWhy do some people think this is a good idea? It’s beyond stupid. The only people who will respond favorably to this are those who already agree with the central thrust. The rest are as likely to associate the bad smell with the one who sent it to them as they are to associate it with the democrat opponent.
Basic psychology.

Posted on October 27, 2010 at 7:40amIn this case they probably will, assuming they can distinguish it apart from any other tactics most political figures would use. So what is next, the mailing of real garbage?
How about a political canidate using this add line “This smell is for you…”

Posted on October 27, 2010 at 11:52amNo, the real dirty politics is the kind practiced behind closed doors.
Example? Here is Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez explaining how California’s 2001gerrymandering system worked (and why some California politicians want that system back by supporting Proposition 27):
“Twenty thousand [dollars] is nothing to keep your seat. I spend $2 million [campaigning] every year. If my colleagues are smart, they’ll pay their $20,000, and Michael will draw the district they can win in. Those who have refused to pay? God help them.”
Who is this “Michael”? His name is Michael Berman of Berman and D’Agostino Campaigns, who drew California’s political boundaries, making them safe for incumbent politicians. And who is Michael Berman’s brother? Congressman Howard Berman, who faces little competition in his nice, safe, protected gerrymandered district.
Just look at the well-connected, big-money donors to one political party and their attempt to institutionalize one-party rule in California. The list even includes Spooky Dude, George Soros, himself! If passed, Proposition 27 would return redistricting decisions to the California Legislature, currently dominated by one party with a nearly 2-to-1 majority. Does any sane person really believe that this Legislature will draw fair boundaries?

Californians: VOTE NO ON PROPOSITION 27!
