Police used beanbag rounds and pepper balls to disperse violent protesters just blocks away from Disneyland Tuesday night, after demonstrators took to the streets of Anaheim, Calif. over recent deadly police shootings.
As many as 500 protesters faced off against 250 police officers in confrontations that ended around 2 a.m., Sgt. Bob Dunn said. Protesters set fires, smashed windows and threw rocks at officers in riot gear, the Los Angeles Times reported. Twenty-four people were arrested.
It was the fourth day of protests and violence after police shot and killed two men in separate incidents over the weekend. Manuel Angel Diaz’s family has filed a $50 million lawsuit against the city, claiming he was shot after running away from police on Saturday. Police said he failed to heed orders to stop after acting suspiciously with two others in an alley, and that he threw something onto the roof of an apartment complex, believed to be heroin. Joel Mathew Acevedo was killed Sunday after he fired at an officer following a brief pursuit in a stolen vehicle, authorities said.
Police have said both men were known gang members. There have been six shootings by police officers in Anaheim so far this year, up from four a year ago. Five of the incidents have been fatal.
Earlier on Tuesday, city councilmembers voted unanimously to ask the U.S. attorney’s office to investigate the recent shootings. Crowds gathered outside City Hall were initially peaceful, but turned violent as their numbers increased and police formed a line to push them back from the building.
As the night progressed, protesters spread through downtown Anaheim, setting fires in trashcans and smashing windows of businesses. A gas station was shut down amid reports that some protesters were seen filling canisters with gas.
Dunn said about five people were hurt, including a police officer and two members of the media who were struck by rocks. Some protesters may have been injured either by police or during a fight between demonstrators, police said.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Posted on July 25, 2012 at 2:48pmBeing that I was born and raised in Anaheim, I have a unique perspective on this. A little background first. Anaheim PD is probably one of the largest single city police forces in the nation. They have 5 helicopters. They were able to muster 250 officers to put this down. They have a ton of money behind them, from Disneyland, the Angels and the Ducks. That is not even mentioning the hotels and entertainment complexes that go along with those.
These people are beyond stupid, Anaheim PD is NOT messing around. They will NOT roll over and allow these people to trash the city. This city was a very nice city. Now, with all the illegal immigrants, it is not what it used to be. There are areas of the city that I wouldn’t send my worst enemy. Over the years, parts of this place have turned into gangland. These officers never know what to expect from these dirtbags. Gang members have been shot since the ’80s. Now, everyone is crying foul. I have an idea, if you don’t want the police to shoot you, stop the gang activity. Stop shooting each other, first. These people come out to protest the police shooting these guys, but if they shoot each other, those same people cry for police protection. Hypocrisy at its finest.

Look, I’m no fan of most police forces. I believe they are wooden soldiers. Despite the fact that they have murdered people (41 bullet holes into an immigrant reaching for a wallet A. Diallo 1999)…there is no data to suggest that you are even close to being correct. That’s just rhetoric and lies.

Posted on July 29, 2012 at 8:29amRoth. Have you looked into the rest of the Diallo case? Officers on special patrol in a high crime area observed what appeared to be a gang look out. After attempting to approach the person exhibiting suspicious behavior he fled. When Amado stopped he was in a darkened door way, he stood in fighting stance then swept his heavy winter jacket back in a manner usually used to draw a concealed weapon, The lead officer saw a dark, blocked off object in his hand and believed it was a weapon, he then shouted GUN! At the same time he slipped on a patch of ice. The other officers, hearing their partner yell the presence a firearm then see him fall backwards believe he has been shot. They then open fire.
Anybody that has ever seen what 9mm FMJ +P+ does, as thats what they carried then, knows multiple rounds are required to incapacitate a person. The officers were all armed with hi-cap 9mms. Had Diallo been truly armed 42 rounds would have been just fine. Realize that you just saw your partner go down after what you thought he was shot. It reminds me of another high round count shooting in which the chief responded to the question of why the suspect was shot so many times. His response? That’s all they had.
It was sad and tragic but could also have been avoided had he stopped. Officers are allowed to briefly stop a person acting suspicious, no matter what Libertarians/Anarchists think of Terry v. Ohio.

And large rocks thrown at full male strength are completely safe – just ask anyone in world history who has ever been stoned to death. These are just a bunch of kids having fun while they excersize their First Amendment Rights – as Nancy Pelosi said, “God bless them!” (Oh wait, can you still say God in public?) The right has their TEA party. Based on the way the Occupy areas smelled of ammonia, or perhaps based on average liberal brain pan size, the Left has it’s version – the PEA party (Progressive Extremist Anarchists). And those evil police, trying to protect private property and public safety. Tsk, tsk, tsk. Posted on July 25, 2012 at 2:30pm@Dixie63,
Thin blue line? Are you kidding me? You have no idea what you’re talking about. Explain how police forces reflect their commitment to protecting your rights. They have been overtaken by unions, affirmative action, lowering of hiring standards, etc. There are plenty of examples of where they have overstepped their authority and even more of corruption and wrongdoing. Your idolatry of police is unwarranted.
Furthermore, you lament the erosion of freedom and rights yet can’t connect the dots that these men and women are the muscle behind that erosion. When you‘re 4th amendment right is violated because you won’t walk through a porno scanner at the airport and some mouth-breathing high school dropout gets to feel your crotch for bombs there is a cop looking right at you and him and doing NOTHING.
When this all comes to a head…economically, socially, do you think that the cop is going to refuse an order to kick in your door and take your gun? If their supervisors and job depended upon it they wouldn’t bat an eye to do so. Yet, your willful blindness to this issue persists. Use your brain. They may not be your enemy (yet) but they sure as heck aren’t on your side.

That seminal event caused me to switch sides and become active in the anti-war movement. And, between events at Berkeley and UC Davis a few years later, I came to truly hate the police force.

I don’t believe that rioting by a few hundred lawless welfare junkies in a half dozen isolated urban communities even comes close to justification for imposing martial law nationwide. But this administration has shown us time and time again that they don’t have to justify their behavior.
