Cadaver Dog Picks Up Scent of Deceased Body at Baby Lisa Irwins Home

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (The Blaze/AP) — An FBI cadaver dog reacted to the scent of a dead person inside the Kansas City home where a baby girl disappeared nearly three weeks ago, according to a police affidavit released Friday.

The affidavit was filed to support a search warrant request for the home of Deborah Bradley and Jeremy Irwin, who reported their 10-month-old daughter, Lisa Irwin, missing Oct. 4 and said someone must have crept into the home and taken the girl while the mother and two other boys slept.

The affidavit said the dog taken into the house Monday indicated a “positive ‘hit’ for the scent of a deceased human in an area of the floor of Bradley’s bedroom near the bed.” A judge approved the warrant Tuesday and police and the FBI conducted a daylong search Wednesday.

Court documents filed Friday said police took blankets, toys and clothing from the house, as well as rolls of tape and a tape dispenser.

The family’s local lawyer, Cynthia Short, did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment, and police declined to discuss what they found.

“We aren’t able to talk about specifics of the case,” said police spokeswoman Stacey Graves. “The documents that were made public will have to stand on their own.”

The FBI dogs, which often are used at both disaster and crime scenes, are trained “specially to recognize the scent of decaying, decomposing human flesh,” retired FBI special agent Jeff Lanza said Friday.

“That’s what they hit on. What the dogs are saying is that they smell that scent,” Lanza said. “That can be the scent of an actual body decomposing, or residual scents after the body is no longer there.”

Wednesday‘s search was perhaps law enforcement’s most aggressive yet at the parent’s home, drawing officers armed with shovels, rakes and other tools who hauled off bags that appeared to be full of potential evidence.

Police also brought in a bomb and arson truck to assist the search, though spokesman Capt. Steve Young said there were no indications of explosives in the house. Some bomb detection devices use X-ray technology to scan solid objects to reveal items concealed within. An AP reporter saw investigators carrying at least a dozen thin, black rectangular sheets away from the home during the afternoon.

Does anyone know how long a Human body (especailly an 11 month old) takes to leave a “deceased body” scent? I can’t imagine a small child (or an adult) being dead for only a few hours leaving a “deceased body” scent. Anyone got any clues?

I agree with the Monk. The body of the child was there in the morning and possibly dead at night? It would take awhile for there to be the scent of a decaying corpse.

But the “body” wasn’t there for 3 weeks. Are you saying that if a person dies and is moved within a few hours that it will continue to decompose at the death site and leave a smell trace? Please enlighten me on this.

Mom is drunk. Baby falls out of crib and dies. Home is warm. Necrosis sets in pretty quick. All those little microbes in your gut are working overtime. No gas passing now everything is building up inside you. Baby lays there undiscovered for 3-4 hours in a house in MO in the summer? Mom discovers her. Freaks out. Takes another hour or two to come up with a plan. Poor child could have lain in place for as long as 6 or 7 hours before being moved. Was there blood soaked into the carpet? Missouri in the summer. Yeah there could be an odor.

These dogs have an extremely keen sense of smell and will pick up on scents that won ever register on our honkers. It was said above but get ready for the Anthony story, part II. This is probably Casey’s long lost half sister. Unfortunately thought this would be the sad ending for poor little Lisa. Hell…. if you saw the video of her interviewed on Fox….. all I ended up thinking was …. GUILTY…. GUILTY…. GUILTY. This is also a fine example of why you should choose your friends very wisely. I just get sick to my stomach thinking about all of this. God rest Lisa’s soul.

Next story will probably be…. it was SIDS…. …. and they panicked or Mom had post partem (sp?) depression . Thank God I don’t watch regular TV any more…. couldn’t watch this Casey Antony part deux.

Three eye witnesses saw a man carrying a baby on that night in the area of Lisa’s home.
If the mom was drunk and accidently smothered Lisa there’s no way she could have been sober enough to make the scene look like a break-in and dispose of the baby.
I‘m wondering if the guy carrying the baby was Bradley’s brother.
    Lisa’s dad had an alibi.
And what about Bradley’s sons. Wouldn’t they wake up during all of this? She said one of her sons was sleeping with her that night.
I keep hoping someone will drop little Lisa off and it ends well.

I think he just said the brother was in on it, not he killed her. The baby probably wouldn’t stop crying, and mom wanted to get drunk, so she shut her up. Alcoholic black out is no excuse, you shouldn’t get drunk with a baby in the house. Period.

If the mom had passed out drunk , did she accidentally roll over and smother the baby? What if the baby had been sleeping in the bed with mom and 5 year old brother and had crawled or fallen out and dad came home, didnt know she was there and accidentally stepped on her and crushed her to death and he hid the body and phones? Or it was really a stranger abduction and the police are just using psyops on the parents, because they have no suspects? No telling what the truth is, yet. Pray for that sweet little baby.

The reality is, statistically speaking, it is always more likely that Mom/Dad or both or some other close family member committed the crime against the child. So rare to think that some stranger would just pop in and take the child. Tragic, dispicable, but true.

Actually dogs are over 90 percent accurate for smelling death in general (that’s why often dogs will begin rolling on the ground to get the scent on them), and in the last few years cadaver dogs have mistaken dead animals for what their trainers thought the dogs were smelling human corpses.

like all the other mothers who’ve done harm to their own babies and go on TV. You can read it in their words and their eyes and body language. I remarked that she was guilty when I first saw it.
