Cal State Students Smash Glass Door in Protest of $500 Tuition Hike

Protests over a small tuition increase at Cal State University led to a violent scene on Wednesday. The drama started at a Board of Trustees meeting, where members were poised to discuss a $500 tuition increase — a 9 percent hike that would bring the total cost per year to attend the institution to about $7,000.
The Imperial Valley Press has the precise details:
In a 9-6 vote, the CSU board voted to raise tuition by $498 per student, changing the tuition for full-time CSU students from $5,472 in the 2011-2012 school year to $5,970 for 2012-2013 before campus-specific fees, according to a press release from the CSU chancellor’s office.
With campus-specific fees included, the total cost for undergraduate students would average $7,017 per student annually.
While this figure may sound relatively minimal, especially considering the overwhelming costs associated with many of the nation’s private colleges and universities, students became enraged. According to KPCC, there were about 150 protesters outside of the Trustees’ building.
While trying to get into the meeting, these individuals clashed with campus police, who were dressed in full riot gear. The exchange was so intense that one of the large, glass doors on the Trustees’ headquarters smashed. University police, in an attempt to control angry protesters, turned to the use of pepper spray. In the end, three officers were injured and four people were arrested.
Watch the chaos, below (caution: violence):
The protest was organized by ReFund California, a group that claims that college has become unaffordable for many Californians. The organization has organized the “Week of Action,” which occurred from November 9-16. During this time, there were numerous planned protests at Cal State, among other public institutions.
(Video Caution: Violence)
According to the Huffington Post, ReFund’s website reads, “‘We already paid! It’s time to make Wall Street corporations and the wealthy pay to refund education!’” Here, it seems the group is borrowing some ideological constructs from the Occupy Wall Street movement. On their site, the group also says:
With 200% increase in tuition for UC, CSU, and community college students since 2008, and now the looming $2.5 billion in additional cuts to education and public services, students, workers, and educators will be calling on leaders of California’s schools and universities to support refunding education by making the Wall Street and the super-rich pay for students, parents and communities.
Here’s more footage from the event (caution: violence):
Interestingly, the school’s Assistant Chancellor Robert Turnage attempted to divert blame for the increase, telling the AP, “I understand why people are frustrated. A lot of this energy is misplaced. It needs to be directed at people who have decision-making power over taxes. We have institutions to run. We have to make payroll every month.”
California, like many other states, is facing financial constraints that have led to severe budget cuts. This, in turn, is impacting education funding. Considering that 45 percent of students won’t pay the increase due to aid and grants (students who come from homes making $70,000 or less generally pay no tuition, according to Cal State) and considering the fact that tuition is extremely affordable when compared to other localities, the angst may be somewhat overblown.

Posted on November 17, 2011 at 3:25pmHigher education nowadays is nothing more than attendance at classes on social engineering where mind control and indoctrination are constantly in play.
Charging anything for being transformed into a politically correct bigot should be a crime.
I‘d like to see academia funding fall so low they’re forced to drop nonsense courses like African American studies and Women’s Studies, as well as defunding their bloated treasury for paying athletes to attend.
It’s coming, and when it gets here that will be my time to celebrate. The only way to bring the politically correct social engineering fools back into line is to take away their money and reduce the curriculum down to the necessary basics.
We’re going to see a lot of flakes, oddballs and misfits at the average Pudunk U social engineering factory have nervous breakdowns.

The education system is a farce, and they are full of self serving liars. I am an x-ray tech, the college here where I live churns out 20-30 techs every year and still they (the professors of the program) say it is a critical field and needs techs. We are so over run by new techs nationwide that 95% of the graduates graduate to no job at all and have a tuition to pay off. What people need to start doing is to take the colleges to court and sue them for misrepresentation. The colleges and universities are just another big business that is selling items with no care about the people buying them. Better to call them educational casinos.

Posted on November 17, 2011 at 10:38amI so agree. I got a master’s in rehab counseling from a major university, in part because the school stated (in their literature AND in a personal interview) that the average salary earned by people with this particular degree was $70,000. I graduated with a 3.89 average, great recommendations, etc – and was promptly offered a job making $9.50 an hour. I’ve had multiple jobs since then, none of which paid more than $40,000. And huge debt, of course. Turns out the school completely misrepresented the field and the earning potential – to this day I have no idea where they got their stats or why they can get away with blatantly lying to applicants. I have no problem paying legitimate debt, but it’s outrageous that these schools can sucker people in like this.
P.S. – My local community college is ALSO hawking the same type of medical degrees you mentioned, telling students they’re going to make $50,000 going into debt for these programs. Hmph.

The college I attended taught what was popular thinking rather than what was correct for the long term. To teach what is morally correct and fiscally responsible was like fingernails on a chalkboard to them. It was all about tenure and intellectual comfort without fear of reprisal.

Posted on November 17, 2011 at 10:05amWrong thing to do, but its about time students stopped blaming banks for their student loans….
You don’t blame the banks because a Honda Civic base model goes from $17K to $35K – no, you blame Honda/Dealers, not the bank that gives you a loan.
You don’t blame the banks because you get a loan to fix your home up and the low cost siding and insulated doors are now 3X the cost — No you blame the suppliers…
Same with College’s – you don’t blame the banks for your loans, you take it to the Dean and to the Bursars office, you complain there, that is where the problem lies. If its too expensive, then you have to think about other options or take off a year, work, save some cash and go to college the following year or send a college a letter saying, thank you for the acceptance, but since your tuition is too high and you don’t want to be stuck with high student loans, you’ve chosen to go to a competing college that is less costly….
Its time to put competition to work in college’s too, time to break their hold on people, time for them to reconsider “tenure” and start paying teachers normal salaries and stop jacking up college costs to astronomical proportions.
Breaking glass or breaking anything isn’t a solution though, nor it is in anyway a productive means to an end.

Posted on November 17, 2011 at 10:56amI’ve counted 15 uses of “troll” already!!
And about 9 times laughing at his own stupidity!
One more post and he’ll be up to about 40 uses of “troll”, and laugh at himself about 20 more times!
C‘mon and bet me that he’ll get to at least one hundred uses of “troll” before this thread is dead…

Posted on November 17, 2011 at 11:35amha ha ha ok let me see if I can help you out on the 100 troll thingie…lol what a dip
Vtroll man is a certified lying troll
always has been a troll from his first posts
do not confuse a troll , especially a certified troll, with real concerned individual concerning intelligent input
Vtroll slams the Tea party
Vtroll slams America as a whole
However, in his stupidity will go into a troll rage where he even contradicts his own troll statements even in the same paragraph showing his true troll colors…lol and that is really rich and quite entertaining
Now Vtroll does have premature troll spews, as you can plainly see, lol but it will get more entertaining as the dance goes on… wait for it … wait for it… THERE HE SPEWSSSS
Vtroll you never disappoint…. keep coming back now little troll we do need the laugh..

Posted on November 18, 2011 at 7:35amYou have never heard me slam America as a whole, or slam the Tea Party. You just make up garbage to extend your troggy rant, and you look and sound really excited and stupid.
Stop hitting that crack pipe so hard. You even got an idiot to toss in a “mother’s basement” jab…super unoriginal weakness there…unfazed.
Now c’mon and say “troll” 53 more times…you’ve almost hit the ringer…
