Calif. Atheists Rip Up Bible Verses During Anti-Christian Beach Protest

Over the years, believers and atheists have had their fair share of spats. But, as time progresses, it seems that the tit for tat arguments that often season debates between the two parties are increasing in their ferocity.
Over the weekend, Backyard Skeptics, an atheist group out in Orange County, California, decided to rip apart photocopied pages of the Christian Bible in an effort to rail against the book’s “immoral” teachings. Beliefnet’s Rob Kerby has more:
[The group] says the demonstration is based loosely on Thomas Jefferson’s Bible – an 86-page book that omits huge chunks of the New Testament, according the Religion News Service. Jefferson’s Bible, which the Smithsonian National Museum of American History is restoring, chronicles Jesus’ life but leaves out the Resurrection and all miracles the Bible says Jesus performed.
Bruce Gleason, the group’s director, explained the Backyard Skeptics’ opposition to the holy book. “We’re not there to burn the Bible or desecrate,” he said. “But there are plenty verses in the Bible that if you did any of those things today, you’d be thrown in jail immediately.” He continued:
“We want to make this a better world for secular and humanistic values. We don’t believe prayer works. We don’t believe religion adds anything except a sense of false hope.”
In actions that the Washington Post’s Brad Hirschfield called “hypocritical” (after all, these are “free thinkers” who are purposely destroying something they disagree with), these non-believers decided to hold the very public demonstration to showcase their disrespect for Christian scriptures.
To make sure that people would see the event regardless of their location, Backyard Skeptics even aired it live on UStream.com. Below, find a report from an atheist involved in the event as well as some raw footage from the demonstration:
Also, watch the following event explanation, featuring an interview with Gleason (who admits getting “carried away” and actually tearing up a page from the Bible) and attendee reaction (via the Orange County Register):
Hirschfield responds to all of this, writing:
Fanatical atheism is no worse and no better than fanatical religion, though it may be more bitterly ironic. There is something pretty odd, dare I say hypocritical, about a bunch of people who call themselves “freethinkers” and “humanists” not only verbally abusing people of faith, but actually tearing up verses from the Bible as an act of protest…
And in the Baptist Press, Kelly Boggs discusses the lack of media coverage the event has received:
If the organization were Christian and ripping pages from the Quran or destroying the book “Heather Has Two Mommies,” it likely would have garnered media attention from sea to shining sea, with the Christians portrayed as insensitive bigots or intolerant censors.
Considering the negative attention a Florida pastor brought upon himself over his Koran-burning exploits, it‘s a wonder this hasn’t warranted more media scrutiny.

Posted on September 20, 2011 at 1:16pmThey claim not to believe, but in truth they hate Jesus. The Bible has received more scrutiny than any literature in the history of the world, but it still stands. They cannot effectively discredit it, despite their most sincere efforts. Know, brothers and sisters, that they hate you, but you’re in good company, because they hated Him first. Consider yourselves blessed if you are allowed to suffer for the Name of Jesus. The real persecution is coming. We haven’t seen anything yet, in this country, but we will.

Posted on September 20, 2011 at 1:41pmATHEISM: by definition is “knowing” that there is no God. The ONLY way to know that, would be to possess ALL POSSIBLE knowledge in the universe.
In which case it should be cake for an atheist to explain how the outer rim of pinwheel galaxies rotate at the same speed as the inner portions of the same galaxies when Physics demands they should rotate more slowly.
OR to explain the rotation of the planet Uranus.
OR to explain how viable dinosaur DNA can still exist.
OR to explain why the laws of the macro-verse & the micro-verse are not compatible.
OR to explain the theory of “pangea” when the backside of the continents also fit together (not just the obvious Africa/South America puzzle fit).
Yes, folks – ALL THESE MYSTERIES and more will be explained to us in short order by the same folks who claim to have access to ALL DATA in the universe, and know for a fact that there is no spiritual dimension, no human soul, and no God.

“ATHEISM: by definition is “knowing” that there is no God. The ONLY way to know that, would be to possess ALL POSSIBLE knowledge in the universe.”
Absolutely correct. Most self-proclaimed atheists are actually agnostic atheists; basically saying “I don‘t believe there’s a higher power because there is absolutely no scientific evidence of one.”

Posted on September 20, 2011 at 2:08pmHaving come from a family of many atheists, and being a believer myself, I do understand the mindset. A belief system that includes a hereafter and consequences is unacceptable to people who are relativists. Sinners, by definition , are relativists. So being , they deny a deity who would punish their denial and unrepentance. This allows them to continue in their sin nature. It’s quite simple really. One need only know an atheist on the most intimate level to understand it.

Wrong. The defenition of atheism is not believing in the existance of god(s). You are inventing the idea that the definition of atheism is to “KNOW” that no gods exist. That’s a fabrication you created. I am an atheist but I‘ll be the first one to say that I don’t know for certain that there is no god. Only that everything I‘ve seen to date seems to indicate to me that there isn’t.
What an agnostic actually is is somebody that doesn’t feel they have enough information to committ to either atheism or theism.
All atheists aren’t foaming at the mouth morons like the people at this event or the people that want every reference to god removed from any public place. These groups that organize and attend these events can’t even honestly call themselves atheists. Their religion is the belief that all others should be converted to their belief system, it’s no different than any other religion on earth except they substitute themselves for gods.

But I observe Christianity is a positive force in the world, faith just wasn’t a positive force in my personal life. I don’t want to convince anyone to be an atheist. I want everyone to be free to believe in whatever they want, so long as it doesn’t harm others. Unfortunately not all religions are positive forces in the world, ie Islam.
Christianity has a bloody history, but it’s not bloody today. Today, in the US, if you want to find someone pro liberty, you’re advised to find a Christian. That’s all good in my book.

I don’t believe in the God of the Bible, believe Christ was a wise man but a not devine and frankly don’t know what happens when we die but lean towards nothing. Immortality would get old after a while so I don’t mind having my conciousness extinguished when I die. Seriously after a few million years of sitting in a meadow and worshipping Jesus I’d probably be begging for an end.

Posted on September 20, 2011 at 3:23pmIf they have real stones, they’ll go out in public and start burning the Koran. But they don’t do they? Because this isn’t what this is really about. It is about anarchists/progressives (a little of both) who NEED to separate people from religion in order to meet their goals. Religious people aren’t fans of government being God, and you can’t sway them from that unless you either separate them from the religion through some miraculous gesture that convinces them, or you ensure everyone possible isolates and persecutes them. Make no mistake–they are RELIGIOUS. Their religion is destroying Christianity. Note they never go after any other religion….
Granted the head nut of the atheists did a pseudo rant regarding Islam recently, but did so in a manner that lumped both Christians and Muslims together as one, saying that “they” (both) murdered in the name of religion. Most of his rant was aimed at Christians, his inclusion of Islam was out of the realization most people know their intentions are to destroy Christianity as it is an obstacle for them in the U.S. He rarely mentioned Islam, in fact substituted Christianity for most actions of the Koran.

Posted on September 20, 2011 at 5:01pm@ Faithkills I’m sorry it seems you had a negative experience in your life and sounds like you have nothing against those who practice their faith in a positive way. But remember, we‘re all human and we all mess up or don’t do something we should be doing. I agree that not all religions and even not all people are a positive force. I can only hope and pray that your past or other factors won’t keep you from learning more about the Truth but that you will be curious about the Bible and Christianity. If you‘re ever curious and have questions I’ll be here :) A few bad experiences shouldn’t keep us from faith but should make us stronger. I’ve heard several stories of people going through so much pain and anguish in life (sometimes caused by others) but have kept the faith. People getting shunned by their families for being a New Testament Christian, getting bullied and ridiculed by people who claim to be “Christians” but are not. We shouldn’t be worried about what others can do us but what the Lord can do to us in the end. For now though I can only offer you what I know and have read and hope and prayer that you’ll consider learning more.

Hehe I don’t generalize bad behavior form people claiming to be Christians to the religion itself, I just hope you will understand the same thing about these ‘atheists’. They are properly anti-theists. A real atheist doesn’t have a religious belief to be offended. I don’t hate god, I just see no evidence of one.
But posters are correct. If a religion comes close to deserving anger it is Islam. Prominent atheist Sam Harris understands that. Not so much anger but concern, and recognition that Islam as currently constituted is not the same as other religions.
Also no, there was no trauma that formed my philosophy. Perhaps if there were I might better understand the anger of these ‘atheists’. I can understand that someone raped by a priest might be emotionally affected. But that isn’t my case. I just find the act of belief to be detrimental to intellectual growth, for me anyway. I don‘t ’believe’ in belief:) There’s a saying, the wise man knows he knows nothing. Belief is ‘knowing’, and once you ‘know’, you stop seeking. Theists, and idealists in general, ‘know’ things and are thus closed off to further knowledge.

Posted on September 20, 2011 at 7:47pmIt takes a child until about the age of 6 months to realize that when his Mother leaves the room, that she still exists. Until that point in time, when she cannot be seen, she does not exist. Faith is believing that God exists without having to have visual proof of his existence; however, if you can look outside of yourself, and understand how complex the existence of life is, there is visual proof. A single cell is extremely complex in it’s design. To believe that lightning could hit a puddle of premordial mud, and begin the basis of life, is a far greater reach than to believe in intelligent design. I believe in God, and have faith that Jesus died for my salvation. I have no problem with someone who choses not to believe as I do. I have had a great life, and do what I can to lead a good life. If I am wrong, then I just ended up with a good life. If an atheist is wrong …

Also, what do you mean by historical? Are the acts themselves no longer sins, or the punishments no longer needed? Posted on September 20, 2011 at 2:10pmAlso, there is a separation of levitical law to the Jews and the Ten Commandments. God had specific reasons for His law to the Jews and the punishments for breaking those laws. Those reasons do not apply to any other race. Jesus sums up the Ten Commandments quite well. 1. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength. This covers the first 5 commandments. 2. Love your neighbor as yourself. This covers the second five. This is what we are to try to live up to as Christians. Of course we will all fall short but we are to walk in this direction.
Salvation is by faith alone. The law does not save you, it condemns you. Jesus saves.

Posted on September 20, 2011 at 3:50pmAre you counting on people not looking up the passage and/or Biblical illiteracy to let your claims pass? For one thing, the verses above allow for an examination of evidence and punishment for a man who makes such a charge falsely. Though this passage only deals with the case of women, if either sex were found to be guilty of fornication, the punishment was the same.
As for verse 28, it is expounded upon further in other passages. The woman’s father has the final say whether the man can marry the daughter or not, so he could prevent her from ending up with a monster. Considering how they lived at the time, it would be unlikely that there would be unknown stalker-type rapists. This law would have a deterrant effect, discouraging men from using women only to leave them unmarriagable and destitute with no consequence to themselves. To marry her was to assume a lifelong responsibility for her, period. How many men would engage in date rape if that were the sentance now?

“Are you counting on people not looking up the passage and/or Biblical illiteracy to let your claims pass?”
What claims? I made absolutely none: I quoted (from the Beliefnet article The Blaze took the story from) the particular passages mentioned. Have an issue? Take it up with Beliefnet or The Blaze, as the story is theirs.
But as for your fact checking, you’re talking about the -man- in this case, accusing a girl of not being a virgin. Conveniently you stopped at the man’s punishment and ignored the next part, which states:
Report Post »“If, however, the charge is true and no proof of the girl’s virginity can be found, 21 she shall be brought to the door of her father’s house and there the men of her town shall stone her to death. She has done a disgraceful thing in Israel by being promiscuous while still in her father’s house. You must purge the evil from among you.”

Posted on September 20, 2011 at 5:44pmMostly just from the context walkabout. I suppose I could mount a scriptural argument but it would be complex and full of holes. This is just one of those common sense things. Israel is God’s chosen people. They were supposed to be the model of righteousness for the rest of the world. God told them to go into Canaan and KILL ALL Canaanites. This was so the people could remain pure. But they failed in this and they did interbreed with the people of the land. (Please keep in mind here that God knew all this would happen, just as He knew Adam would sin, this was all part of the plan, building up for the need of the Savior). Anyway, because of this corruption God gave the Jews harsh rules to show them what it takes to remain pure. The example above is stoning non-virgins. Well yeah, think about this! No teenage pregnancy, no messing around, sex was kept in the proper context…etc…Every aspect of their life was guided by this iron fist.
So it is the context. We still need to strive for righteousness. We are not excused from the Law, we are merely pardoned for our sins. Is God going to hold me accountable because I wear clothes of different materials, I fail to tie tassels on the four corners of my robe, I eat shellfish, or because I take my azz for a walk every Saturday? No, I don’t believe so. These laws were given to the Jews of that time, not for us today. If we keep Christ’s two commands in mind we will always be guided along the right path.

To be outraged means that I give these mis-guided people power into my life to upset me. THEY HAVE NOTHING ON ME. There glory will be their own shame. I feel pity for them
Which takes more strength…. to hit back when someone hits you or to not hit back when they do. I think you will find it harder to not hit back for many reasons. I will give you one. If you don’t hit back people will label you as cowardly, and you will have to take that also even though you had NO FEAR of the situation at all.
Jesus did not fight back… and He said IF my Kingdom was of this world my followers would fight back.I will tell you this… if God would unleash his people to war in this manner we would rule the plant. There is NO power capable of stopping us. God ain’t workin it that way!!!
The Lord says….“ my ways are not your ways”…… I’m not interested in doing it your way!

Posted on September 20, 2011 at 3:37pmThe government may be secular, but the population wasn‘t and isn’t. The Founders ackowledged the Creator and would have agreed that we were a Christian nation though no one ecclesiastical organization was tied to the government or would have supremacy over all others. That was the point of secularism, not this militant anti-theism we see practiced today.
