Calif. Fish & Game President Officially Ousted After Picture Shows Him Legally Hunting Mountain Lion in Idaho

The California Fish and Game Commission ousted its president on Wednesday, six months after he faced major backlash for shooting a mountain lion during an Idaho hunting trip and posing for pictures with the slain animal.

Conservationists and California Democrats alike had called for Daniel Richards’ resignation earlier this year after the photos emerged. Mountain lion hunting is illegal in California but permitted in Idaho and other states.

Richards, a proud big-game hunter, said he broke no laws and said the campaign against him was part of a sustained effort to shut down gaming in the state.

“This originates from the enviro-terrorists being threatened by me,” Richards told the San Jose Mercury News before Wednesday’s unanimous vote to replace him.

The outrage started in February after Richards submitted a photo of himself holding up the dead cat to the hunting publication Western Outdoor News. It featured the caption, “I’m glad it’s legal in Idaho.”

He told the Mercury News he didn’t poach, didn’t import exotic animals, or do anything other than offend those who don’t like mountain lion hunting.

“There’s no chance I did anything wrong,” Richards told the newspaper. “I did everything by the book.”

California Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) had been particularly vocal in trying to get Richards to step down, writing him a letter that stated, “I do appreciate that you did nothing illegal in Idaho, but it is clear that your actions do not reflect the values of the people of California.”

Animal rights groups celebrated the news of Richards’ ouster on Wednesday.

“It’s a symbolic insult to the voters, saying ‘Yeah, look at me, I’m your president of the Fish and Game Commission, and I’m going over here and I’m going to wave this dead cat in your face,’” Madeline Bernstein, president of the Los Angeles Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, told KCAL-TV.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Richards had also come under ethics fire for the hunt because the Idaho ranch did not charge him its usual $6,800 hunting fee — more than the $420 yearly limit on commissioners’ gifts. Richards repaid the lodge after an ethics complaint was filed.

Richards, appointed in 2008 by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, said he plans to remain on the commission as a member until his term expires in January.

How dare he kill the King’s lion!

Oh wait he has a hunting permit signed by the King? FIRE HIM ANYWAY!

So tell me how we’ve moved past the days of King George when I still must get permission from the King to take a bear, deer, lion, or even a freaking fish back to my kitchen? God put me and that animal in the same place at the same time. God gave me the brain on how to operate the rifle or rod, so yes, I’m going to use it. It‘s God’s gift to me, and if I’m hungry or cold, I’m going to skin it and eat it. I have no pride when it comes to these things, but if another man does, good for him and I hope his trophy quenches his pitiful ego.

I live in the mountains of Colorado, surrounded by Pike National Forest with my closest neighbor 3/4 mile away. When I take my trash out, I carry pepper spray and my 45. When I walk to the barn, I carry pepper spray and my 45. When my grandchildren visit, they must have an adult and a dog outside with them. Mountain lions are beautiful…and they eat nothing but meat. Bears at least eat grubs and berries, By the way, you gun grabbers are welcome to come take my trash out any night!

No big deal! Californians will be in for a shock when they find out new laws come into effect, Jan. 1ST 2013. For 4 years ne he has laws that stop folks from doing small dredging in the rivers and streams. Next year the wardens can arrest you if you go near a river – you might be attempting to dredge or pan for gold. The last time we went there we retreived over 3.5 ounces of mercury out of the dredge.

I’m inclined to agree in principle, it’s not very honorable to kill an animal for no reason whatsoever. However, population control is a perfectly valid reason for hunting apex predators. Is there a mountain lion overpopulation problem in Idaho?

THX- hunting is the only viable option of critter control. The fees and yes taxes paid by hunters support local conservation efforts (more than all non-profits together). So lighten up on the hunters, they may be the only way we can save some of these animals.

To Westy: Cougar hunting is legal in Utah as well and yes, the permits allocated are directly proportionate to the cougar over population. The deer population also weighs in as to the number of permits issued. These hunts are allowed to prevent an overpopulation of cougars and to PREVENT the slow and painful deaths from starvation.
To everyone: So who is it, who really cares for the beautiful cougars, those who wish a compassionate death by starvation, or an instant death by rifle?
I know the “libbies” want to give back all of the land and rights back to the wild animals, but refuse to leave first! LOL

I’m not against hunting (even though I am Buddhist and Vegetarian), I have a number of friends who hunt (and often donate the meat to charity, etc. Good people). I would, if hungry enough, be quite happy to shoot a rabbit and cook it up. My only objection is to taking a preditor for sport rather than food (though I DO understand that we *try* to “fix” the balance between preditors and prey, almost as efficiently as any other government run system, but I digress…)

      @integrican
When you can show me that hunters take the weakest/dumbest/slowest/sickest in the way that Natural Selection does (to the great benefit of the species I might add) then I’ll agree that a government run hunting system is better than nature.

I respect your opinion on intentional killing of anything. However, hunting any animal for that matter in most states is highly regulated and highly managed, but it’s a necessity. Taking or hunting animals is beneficial because it keeps herd numbers manageable and disease amongst them at a minimum, but it also provides recreation and a continuation of heritage to those of us who love to hunt.

He followed all the rules and regulations of Idaho, but it appears he may have gotten a five finger discount on the hunting fee, which he paid later.

We already tried that, and it leads to population spikes, and huge die-offs that threaten the continuation of species in the area.

Hunting is conservation, and if you don’t understand why, you need to educate yourself before you reveal your ignorance.

When we start (and we already have) getting rid of people because we don’t “like” something they have done LEGALLY then this country is in BIG TROUBLE. The next thing you know people will be fired everywhere when anyone complains….ie, Fire that person because we don’t like the CONCERT he/she went to, fire that person because we don’t like the fact they vacationed (add any place) someplace not in the state (area) they live in. You could go on and on. It should not matter one iota that this man likes to hunt big game where it is legal. I personally think hunting should be for food and control of population BUT I stress again, its not ANYONES business that he did hunt LEGALLY. This is more “nanny state” and its got to STOP. The answer is that Hunters and Fisherman pay through their license purchases and ammunition taxes a lions’ share of the monies that go for state conservation. Unlike the commie lefties that claim they love life and support the murder of unborn children real conservationists love wildlife and support the ethical and legal taking of game and have a respect for all life. Liberals don‘t bat an eye with the killing of millions of humans but get outraged with the killing of a mountain lion in a state that manages it’s predators as they should. Hunters money is critical in the management of wildlife. Hunters through their own self interest have conservation groups dedicated to all of the animals they hunt. Most anti-hunters spend their money, if at all, in causing trouble to wildlife management.

“It’s a symbolic insult to the voters, saying ‘Yeah, look at me, I’m your president of the Fish and Game Commission, and I’m going over here and I’m going to wave this dead cat in your face,’” Madeline Bernstein, president of the Los Angeles Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals

What about the hunters and other sportsmen that think that’s just a very nice trophy cat? Its symbolic to them as a gesture that their F&G president is a hunter.

The majority of the funding for all Fish and Game comes from hunters and sportsmen. Wonder how much Madeline Bernstein has contributed to the F and G funds. No hunters, less habitat, fewer animals.

He should sue the state of California and every one who had anything to do with his removal. I had to laugh when they told him that his actions did not ‘reflect the values of the people of California’. What values??????HAHAHAHAHA

The values of Cal was no gay marriage, but then the courts said yes. Most people don’t like abortion, but the courts said yes. When was the hunting put on ballot and have people vote. when will they put concealed gun on ballot and see what happens. These libs know what will happen and that is why they don’t want people vote. They know better was is good for us.

Make it an unpaid commission and this would stop. Seems someone wants his brother on the commission.

Bull F IN Shiat It mirrors the lying response I received from Dianne Frankenstein, and Boxer about my written complaint regarding their voting to stop open carry in Commufornia, their letter to me said the same thing, that they do not think Californians want open carry, where do these fools come from? the majority is right leaning why do we stand for these blind idiots…

You are exactly right! The hunt was perfectly legal. The “animal rights” idiots have no problem with the viscous MURDER of humans, abortion.
