Calif. Man Fatally Stabbed During Cockfighting Match… by a Rooster

Everyone knows that cockfighting can be deadly for birds caught up in the illegal practice. But, as evidenced by the bizarre recent death of one California man, the brutal exercise is startlingly dangerous for spectators as well. Calif. Man Fatally Stabbed During Cockfighting Match... by a Rooster

Jose Luis Ochoa, 35, died Sunday after being stabbed in the leg by a sharp blade that had been attached to a fighting bird, police say.

Ochoa, who has been fined for participating in the illegal practice in the past, was rushed to Delano Regional Medical Center shortly after Tulare County police arrived to bust up the cockfight. Ochoa and others fled when sheriff’s deputies arrived at the scene. Though it’s unclear exactly how Ochoa sustained his injuries, police speculate that one of the birds’ razor-like blades punctured Ochoa’s right calf, likely severing a major artery.

“I have never seen this type of incident,” said Sgt. Martin King, a 24-year police veteran. “People have been known to bleed out from those injuries if medical attention is not obtained immediately.”

Also found at the scene were five dead roosters and other evidence pointing to an illegal cockfighting ring. In the state of California, a first offense being involved in a cockfighting operation — whether running or it just watching it — amounts to a misdemeanor. A second offense, however, is treated as a felony.

Ochoa had participated in cockfighting at least once before his death Sunday. Last year he reportedly paid $370 in fines after pleading no contest to one count of owning or training an animal for fighting, according to Kern County Superior Court records.

I’m shocked by the number of comments which seem to equate the life of a rooster with the life of a man. I don’t like cockfighting, but it’s disordered thinking to assert that a man received his just desserts in being killed by a rooster which he was abusing.

I have to agree that in this one case, the man got what is the true just deserts; to watch a bird fight is the same cruelty as a dog fight or any kind of aniamil cruelty. It is poetic in a way, though I do pray for the comfort of his surviving family, if any. This is one case of the bird getting revenge on those who tormented it as a fighter.

I went to a chicken fight many years ago just out of cultural curiosity, and was sickened by what I saw.

They were using long sharp curved pins instead of blades, which is still very brutal, and lightning fast. I witnessed a man try to revive his rooster by sticking its whole head in his mouth and sucking and spitting the blood out trying to clear the lungs. I saw another drunk man crying because his rooster lost and was killed. There were sheriff deputies in the crowd making bets with the rest of the drunken natives. I was definitely out of my element, and instead of satisfying some kind of cultural curiosity, I was culturally shocked.

I am not trying to be disagreeable here, as on most things I see things pretty much the same way as most people that regularly contribute on here. No matter what a lowlife this guy was, we are still talking about a human life and yes what he done is despicable, but he still is a human and if we are going to get our countries morals back, and put and end to all these abortions we need to start valuing human life and stop being so callous. The last time I checked the penalty for cockfighting is not the death penalty. Yeah he probably did get what he deserved, but all of us have made mistakes and many of us are lucky we did not get what we deserved. Jesus really mean’t it when he said let the first among you without sin cast the first stone. Do not get me wrong there are people who have really committed some gruesome offenses that I would be willing to pull the switch myself on. But honestly if this was one of your loved ones who died because of stupidity like this would you really be glad he died?
