Nevada Principal Under Fire for Giving Graduation Speech in Spanish

A Nevada principal is under fire after he translated part of his graduation speech into Spanish.
Principal Crespin Esquivel is the head of Whittell High School in Zephyr Cove, Nevada.* The controversy centers around a speech that included a simple, 14-word phrase: “Class of 2011, I want to congratulate you for all your accomplishments this year.”
As he continued, Esquivel delivered the words in English first and then Spanish. He said he just wanted to make sure that many of the Hispanic parents in attendance could understand his words:
“I figured why not do it in Spanish? I think it’s important for me to make sure all the families feel comfortable,” Esquivel told CBS13.
A parent wrote an op-ed in the local paper complaining about the speech, which sparked the debate.

This folks, if approved—is the Baby Step. Listen and Learn–you must tune into the Progressives and their Political Correctness and other such language and think what is really meant by their words or in this case the use of Spanish words. All of this will leave you behind in the dust. For example—look up Dhimmitude—used on page 107 of the health care bill. You can find it on Snopes.com (I believe Google has taken it out.)….it will shock you. One Step at a time–we are loosing our country…:(

I hate it when in public and around a bunch of people speaking foreign tongues, speak the host country langaage or at least make an attempt carry a translation book or something.

When my mother came here from Germany, she assimilated and became an American, not a German-American. She kept her heritage but we were expected to speak English. If I moved to Germany, I would learn the language. If I moved to Mexico, I would learn the language. The people who come here legally or illegally and don’t learn English are only hurting themselves.

After all, if we wanted to visit the other countries of the world we would need to learn the language for the appropriate country. Why? Because they most likely won‘t accommodate to people that don’t speak their language. That’s just the way it is.

Posted on June 28, 2011 at 1:11pmI graduated high school near the U.S./Mexico border. While our graduation ceremony was exclusively in English, many students had grandparents and even parents that primarily or exclusively spoke Spanish. I am not Hispanic.
It’s time to face basic facts in California. According to state enrollment records, slightly more than half of all California public-school students are of Hispanic descent. About a quarter of these students are classified as “English Learners” and a majority of such students speak Spanish.
In my mind, it was a simple courtesy extended to the grandparents and parents of many of those graduating. No, it wasn’t necessary, but it was polite.

If you go to other countries, they expect you to speak their language. It is not being courteous to those people in the audience who don’t speak the language, it is being condecending. Immigrants leave their countries to come to the US for our privileges and rights. They should be required to learn the language or forfeit the privilege of living in the United States.

I took the principle’s side above, but, I will not stand quiet while you insist we provide everybody with driving tests in any language they choose.

Do you not realize that it is this mentality that has gotten us here in the first place. This concept that we have to adapt to them and not the other way around!? Seriously, do you not see the harm that this does? I, unfortunately, have to live here in CA. and no one can say to me that Latinos are only here doing jobs that American’s do not want to do. This is crazy. 24% of our teenagers are unemployed. My daughter is 17 years old and has rode her bike all over our city applying for jobs in fast-food places. She has been looking almost everyday for 6 months. Most of the fast-food chains won’t even hire minors! I suspect a lot of kids are like my daughter- they would work if it weren’t for the economy and too many stupid regulations. My point is, let our kids go to work at McDonalds- no language barrier in doing that.

And Leave No Child Behind program is a big contributor to the problem. When Chinese immigrants arrived, they made their children speak English, at once! So did the Germans, the Japanese, the Filipinos, Italians, and Irish, and many more. We are enabling the Spanish speaking peoples by not holding them to the same standards we expect of other nationalities. Remember our own American Indians? We separated the children, sending them miles away from family, into harsh boarding schools, forbidding them to speak their language, so they could assimilate into this culture. And we treated the Original inhabitants of this country with such disdain. True, only 14 words were spoken in Spanish, but the reaction to this shows how grieved and angered we have become about our country as a whole. Instead of complaining, get on a school board, change what’s happening, unite parents, students, and raise your good voices so others will hear and take up the cry. English in Schools and Workplaces; your own language at home amongst family.

Your spelling and punctuation are atrocious. Not even commenting on accent marks and the missing ¿ and ¡, you needed “dices” (or technically dice, as it would likely be formal, otherwise it would be se dice). Aprenda is correct in being a mandato, but you messed up preguntar, which would be pregunte. I believe tiene would be tenga because of the que (but I’ve never been good with subjunctive), and “respeto” has no c in it. That got hammered into my head by my teachers in my first year of learning, haha.

When California’s citizens become tired of supporting a bunch of freeloade4rs, maybe they’ll do something about them.

I almost graduated, but P.E. was too hard. I love when people try to tell me I’m stupid as they give incorrect statements. Listen pal, there is no single language called Chinese. The majority of people in China speak Mandarin, but there are literally dozens of languages spoken by Chinese people. I’m not talking about regional dialects, but different languages. For example, if I speak Cantonese, I may be able to understand someone speaking Mandarin, but that does not mean I can speak Mandarin. They are different languages. You must have graduated from an Alternative high school.

I predict, and it is already starting (see latest headlines -Obama and the dream act) that Obama and his cronies will find a way in the next 12 months to grant large swaths of amnesty. It is purely political. Not only does it go along with his “no borders” beliefs of the left, but he is doing so poorly amongst the legal voting populous that he knows he needs a new crop of voters to bus out to the polls. Mark my words: He will try to steal this election through the illegal vote.
Report Post »Harry Reid did similar in Nevada through the Unions during the 2010 cycle. He was behind, so he sent out email requests to the Union Stewards running the hotel workers (housekeeping, F&B, etc) to bus them out to the polls to vote. Many of these people don’t have legal right to vote, but have false paperwork.
I used to work in these Unions in Las Vegas, and I am fully aware of the process. The emails came out during the election, but the news wouldn’t cover it. It was the reason for his last minute surge and eventual victory. Dems know this game. They troll through the neighborhoods, organize, and bus them out to vote every time.
Trouble is, they will need ALL the votes this time. So it stands to reason that they will find legal status for them to make sure they all get a chance to pull the crank.

I am annoyed that they print on products has become absolutely diminutive in order to accommodate a second language. Other products that include instructions are printing them in 4 and 5 languages which the socialist democrat tree-huggers should be hating on, since it kills so many more trees (never mind they are a completely renewable resource)
I’d be shouting if he had given it entirely in Spanish.
Same if he gave it entirely in two languages.
But, I don’t see how a short phrase that is FIRST stated in English, then restated in Spanish is hurting anyone.
It‘s easy to see how people’s emotions are raw on this topic right now, due to the extremes we have seen lately. I believe if we were isolated from illegal immigration, and if we had truly secure borders, we would be more rational and calm in our reactions to this.
I believe all court proceedings, and all legal filings should be conduted in English alone. As such, I believe English should be legally, officially the language of the United States of America.
In a fast food restaurant this week, I noticed ALL of the kitchen’s activity was conducted in Spanish. I thought – there are probably some employees that only speak Spanish. In which case, an English-only applicant would be ineligible for employment – they couldn’t take/give food orders to the kitchen staff.
As a small business owner, I think I would require my employees only conduct BUSI

Posted on June 28, 2011 at 4:48pmAs a retired school employee, I saw the oppression of countless numbers of children through the English as a second language program. The schools FAILED to give the children the most important tool needed to succeed in the US – English. This program was also biased because it FAILED to address languages other than Spanish. I had six different languages in one class, one year. Only one was language was addressed in the ESL program. The other children played recess & worked in the classroom using English. I followed some through High School. The children who succeeded in life were the ones who didn’t get ESL.
Teachers and principals spoke English to my Grandparents, who understood very little. They all did fine, it wasn’t a stigma – it was and HONOR to be here.

did it occur to you that there are legal immigrants here, for whom, English is not a first language. Is it that important to you to exclude everybody who isn’t just like you. If there are non English speakers in the audience we should congratulate them on sending their kids to high school so they can be productive members of society, not deliberately exclude them.
The hatred towards immigrants here is astonishing considering that we are all immigrants.

Being an American is an ideology, not a skin color. Inferiority or corruptness in not a matter of skin color, but a matter of culture. Trash comes in every color. So when I hear things like Mexican cockroaches it reminds me how ignorance can breeds hatred and hatred breeds more ignorance. I myself was born in this country and served in our nation’s military with two tours in Iraq and have a deep love and devotion to my country. For those who insist on generalizing, remember if you have yet to serve in combat…that makes me more of an American than you. My parents are Mexican and Dominican, one who was born here and served in the Navy and one who served 24 years and retired from the Marines after coming here at age 17 legally from the DR during Vietnam. It pains me to see our country being sold out to socialism and frustrates me when folks start pointing out skin color. What about West, Cain, etc. Hardcore conservatives of a darker shade do exist, but don’t spend their time marching in the streets because we are busy working or serving in the military. He worked as an elevator operator at night and as a pharmacy assistant during the day. It took him seven years of bringing over each family of five members one by one LEGALLY from the Dominican Republic in fear the Cuba idealism would spread there. He sent for my Grandmother last. He forced all my uncles to join the military. They all learned English and assimilated and show a love for this country. My Grandfather struggled with English and so did my grandmother at their older age. They would have appreciated the translation. Some of these knee jerk reactions and generalizations are what is going to make our conservative party look like bad. Always remember inferiority is not rooted in skin color, but in ideology and culture. Trash comes in every color, we need to keep our eye on the ball.

Posted on June 29, 2011 at 2:04amWe just moved to CA. this last October. It’s suppose to be just for a few months as we are in transition so to speak. I registered my kids into the local school district and was disappointed that on the form everything was in both English and Spanish. Not duplicate forms, just one line in English and the other Spanish: English, Spanish and so on. I kept getting confused as to what line I was on. Made me so mad, after doing one students entire packet, I started crossing out all of the Spanish lines for my other two children. The way I see it is if it has gotten to the point that you have so many parents that can’t read or write English then as a community you must be doing something wrong because if you come to this country and you plan on being in this country for a length of time, you really should learn the language. The only reason that I can think of as to why you wouldn’t want to learn the language is if you have no plan on assimilating to the culture you are moving to. You have just come like locus to take advantage of the countries resources and nothing more. These are the people I dislike.

TAKING their KIDS with them.. but here’s how it went THEY SAT and LET this nut PUSH his and those to LAZY to learn our language dictate to them and THEY took it.. so OF COURSE he will do it again..ARE we THAT dumb?? IT’S time we stand up and do more than COMPLAIN.. until we do we get what we are asking for.. The kids that left would STILL get their diploma‘s they can’t not give them to them..and they would have sent a HUGE message..
