After violence erupted Wednesday when a University of California committee began considering a tuition increase, on Thursday that committee approved the plan to raise student fees by 8 percent next fall while expanding financial aid to more students.

Thursday morning’s vote by the finance committee of the UC Board of Regents comes a day after a student protest outside the meeting at the University of San Francisco, which left four police officers injured and lead to more than a dozen protester arrests.
According to KGO-TV in San Francisco, one officer had to pull his gun when a group of 40 protesters jumped him in a parking garage. The group wrestled the officer’s baton away from him and were beating him with it. When the officer drew his gun, the Daily Nexus reports, the small mob began chanting “Take his gun!”
The officer was able to hold the mob at bay long enough to call for backup, which included about 10 officers rushing to his aid.*
The problem started when the crowds stormed barricades, trying to cross police lines. Police fought back, even peppering spraying the crowd at one point.
“It is my belief that officers conducted themselves very well and showed great restraint under the circumstances,” UC Police Chief Pamela Roskowski told KGO.
Later Thursday, the full board is expected to approve the tuition hike, which follows a 32 percent increase this year.
In fall 2011, student fees for California residents will increase by $822 to more than $11,000. That doesn’t include individual campus fees or room and board.
The increase will raise an estimated $180 million in annual revenue, with about one-third set aside for financial aid.
On Wednesday, students called for executives to take pay cuts while some teachers worried what might happen to their pensions as a result of statewide budget cuts.
KGO reports:
Students think top executives should take more pay cuts.
“We have an obligation to maintain excellence and access to our students and we can’t afford it because of state budget cuts and the economy. It’s really tough,” said Vice President of UC Communications Lynn Tierney.
“My classes are so big, professors can barely handle 400 students in a classroom,” said demonstrator Rosalinda Garcia.
And employees are worried about their pensions.
“People who would be making $10,000 a year in retirement will be making under $2,000 a year in retirement if these cuts go through. This is outrageous,” said demonstrator Tanya Smith.
No violence was reported on Thursday.

Posted on November 18, 2010 at 8:19pmPerhaps if they were smart enough to tell the illegals that you can no longer come to our schools at in-state rates they could go a year or two without an increase. But then it would make more sense to deport the illegals and free up all their tax dollars for education so those here legally got the education they’re paying for.
This is not so different than the crap that took place when I was in college. The whining kids foaming at the mouth about having to get a job so they could go to school….. Wahhh! We’ll have to go out of state to get an education because it will be too expensive here! Wahhh! How will we get good jobs here if we can’t pay for school? Wahhhh! Ticked me off that several of the professors were feeding their frenzy by playing protest music and egging them on in the student cafeteria. Damned commies! Truth be told, there are no good jobs here, and you’ll have to go out of state to get them; because you and your braindead parents elected morons like Cuomo to office and screwed everybody, and chased the businesses, out of the state!

The UC Police are a speciality force of sworn officers and it is amazing that if one was being disarmed by a violent mob that he didn’t use his weapon. Congratulations Sir for your restraint.
The pensions are a different issue. Vested benefits taken away are a guarentee for rage and Court actions.
Start with reductions of salaries of current tenured staffers in the UC system. The retirees should be last on the chop block … use the collective barginning formula … “last hired, first fired” to establish cuts.

Posted on November 19, 2010 at 9:01pmYou seem like a reasonable person, @WalkWithMe1966 with me a bit…
Who creates jobs?
Government? Yes, but all government jobs are paid with private sector tax money.
The Poor? No. The poor do not have money to invest in business.
The Middle-Class? Yes. Through Wall-Street and sometimes small businesses.
The Wealthy? Yes. Through Wall-Street, small business, and corporate investments, alike.
Who pays taxes?
Government? No. They collect taxes.
The Poor? No. In most cases, after filing federal taxes, the poor receive all tax money collected back. In addition, many qualify for an ‘unearned income tax credit’ that additionally offsets their Social Security and Medicare taxes.
The Middle-Class? Yes. Percentage wise, this group bears the burden of taxes.
The Wealthy? Yes. Dollar wise, this group bears the burden of taxes.
The problem with the American education system is that it makes good employees, but does little to teach a person entrepreneurship. Unless you understand how to make your money work for you, you will be chasing money your entire life working for someone else who does not care about your future.
The idea behind entrepreneurship is start your own business to become free of the corporate world’s shackles and plan your own future.
The main reason big corporations are leaving is a 35% capital gains tax (second only to Japan in the world) and an insecurity that capitalism in this country is being forsaken by the citizenry. To articulate, high taxes, costly benefits, government manipulations of the market and the banks, and the demonization of the wealthy in this country make for poor business conditions.
It has little to do with the education system in this country and more to do with the economic warfare being waged against citizens of this country.
I’m not rich, never been rich. But it stands to reason that the wealthiest people in this country are essential to job creation. While they may not own a business, they certainly invest money in business on the hopes it will return the investment with profit.
