Calif. School Named for Al Gore May Be Toxic for Students

A new $75 million campus dedicated to “environmental themes” has been named for former Vice President Al Gore (and Rachel Carson who championed environmentalists’ campaign against the use of DDT, a chemical used to fight off malaria-carrying mosquitos).  The Carson-Gore Academy of Environmental Sciences is scheduled to open its doors for a new school year on September 13, but classes may be delayed unless excavation crews can successfully remove and replace toxic dirt on the premises:Calif. School Named for Al Gore May Be Toxic for Students

The LA Times reports:

Construction crews were working at the campus up to the Labor Day weekend, replacing toxic soil with clean fill. All told, workers removed dirt from two 3,800-square-foot plots to a depth of 45 feet, space enough to hold a four-story building. The soil had contained more than a dozen underground storage tanks serving light industrial businesses.

Additional contamination may have come from the underground tanks of an adjacent gas station. A barrier will stretch 45 feet down from ground level to limit future possible fuel leakage.

An oil well operates across the street, but officials said they’ve found no associated risks. Like many local campuses, this school also sits above an oil field, but no oil field-related methane has been detected.

Groundwater about 45 feet below the surface remains contaminated but also poses no risk, officials said. …

Before settling on honoring Gore, the school’s naming committee teased the idea of naming the school after a communist, but that idea was dropped after one member of the committee objected:

In the spring, a school-naming committee received six options, including Pete Seeger Community School. A representative from school board member Marguerite Poindexter LaMotte suggested that the folk singer’s “affiliation with the Communist Party,” among other factors, made that choice inappropriate, two in attendance recalled.

Taking a page out of Michelle Obama’s book, the principal plans to install an organic food garden to supply a student-run farmers market. But Robina Suwol, head of the California Safe Schools coalition says that she’d feel better if the vegetables were grown in planters above-ground.

Better safe than sterile, I suppose.

How ironic! A 75 million dollar campus, dedicated to Algore and built on a toxic waste site! It’s too rich!
Hey California, how proud are you of this debacle? When you will wake up and throw these idiots out on their butts?

This is L.A., not California. It’s a seperate Republic like San Francisco, Topanga Canyon, and Santa Cruz.We are actually thinking of sawing off these parts of the land and kicking them off the join the Peoples Republic of China, where they belong.

This doesn’t suprise me at all. Back in 198o’s the L.A. Community College Dist just had to have a property for their new offices that took up a block. They bought it at the height of the last property over inflated prices and the buildings needed to be upgraded. During the rmodeling they discovered that it wasn’t the best geographical area for the workers, so they used it for a storage area for old furniture and equiptment. So they decided to relocate their offices in downtown L.A. and rented a building for 1.5 million dollars a month, and a parking facility down the street fo $125,000 a month for the employees. About this time the phraise “Moonbat” emerged since the pharoh’s/Board members would go balistic with the press when questioned about it. One of their prized Moonbats that supported their decision was no other than “ Maxine Waters”.

So this doesn’t suprise me at all. Remember,
    November!
    November!
    November!

It is fitting considering all the toxic pollutants that spew from Al’s mouth and the hot air that comes from this sex-crazed poodle. What is the carbon footprint left by all this construction. $75 billion could’ve kept a lot of teachers from being laid off. Enjoy that school California. It truly is the land of LaLa.

Wow, they‘re trying to build a school that’s all about saving the planet and going organic. I learned in chemistry that anything that contains CARBON is organic. Anyway I think its a sign that when tax dollars are used to promote the self-righteous agendas of those who try to use the environment to gain power and indoctrinate our kids, a higher power comes along and makes them look like fools.

I live in California, nothing surprises me anymore. There must be more left leaning crazies in this state than anywhere else. Our state is flat broke and nobody with a right mind will buy our bonds. But they can find millions and millions for a high school. I wonder how many food stamp and welfare payments to the children of illegal aliens it takes to bankrupt a state? Before long, California is going to know the answer.

Al Gores phony movie can not be shown in schools in England with a disclaimer pointing it’s multiple errors in fact.

LOL Okpulot, I LOL on that one.
I remember this controversy from when they bought the property. The paid a boatload for it and then were barred from building b/c of the toxic dirt. The property sat vacant for years, until they scraped off the bare minimum of topsoil to build at a cost of 3 or for million (handling and disposal) and of course there were the usual accusations of kickbacks to the City Council. Then they spent another 75 million to build the school in the inner-city. This place will be trashed in no time flat, just like the other three equally exorbitantly priced “campuses” they just built. They are 6 million in the hole for the last one, as I recall. I wonder if Ca is getting one of those bailout packages?

Makes you wonder how much the United States taxpayer will have to fork out each year to pay for the upkeep and heating/cooling bills that ought to be just as extravagant as the initial costs. Ought to call it Can’t Help But Hope for Change HS or See what you get when you are not looking HS.

I wonder where all of that contaminated dirt ended up going…. You suppose maybe Gore offered to take it to shore up his $1 million beach front property in California? Because you KNOW that it will be under water in the near future due to global warming. Maybe the pontoons were not enough….
