Calif. School Orders Boy to Remove American Flag From Bike

Cody Alicea, 13, likes to fly a small American flag on his bike in honor of veterans such as his grandfather, Robert. He’s been doing it for two months. But now, the school he attends has ordered him to remove the flag citing “racial tensions.”

“In this country we’re supposed to be free,” said Cody, who attends Denair Middle School near Sacramento, CA. “And I should be able to wave my flag wherever I want to. And they‘re telling me I can’t.”

Free or not, officials say flag flying has become too controversial at the school. Denair Unified School District Superintendent Edward Parraz said that while Cody does have a First Amendment right, “with that comes a responsibility.”

That “responsibility” apparently means being more considerate to other cultures.

“Our Hispanic, you know, kids will, you know, bring their Mexican flags and they’ll display it, and then of course the kids would do the American flag situation, and it does cause kind of a racial tension which we don’t really want,” Parraz said. “We want them to appreciate the cultures.”

He explained that some Hispanic students got out of hand with their own flag flying on Cinco de Mayo.

In response, Cody now hides his flag during the day: he takes it off his bike, folds it up, and keeps it in his backpack.

“He‘s got that flag on his bike because he’s proud of where he comes from,” Cody’s father Robert Kisner told KCRA-TV.

Adding to the irony: the school flies an American flag outside the building.

UPDATE:

The school has now responded. It says the boy was forced to remove the flag out of safety concerns resulting from threats made against him, but will now allow him to resume his flag flying. Read our follow-up report.

    The American Battle Flag causes racial tensions? Get out of my country you racial pigs. Get out and stay out. I pray for the day when someone tells me my flag causes racial tensions. When it happens I shall fly the biggest flag you can purchase. Flood it with a thousand spot lights and dare anyone to tell me they are “uncomfortable with my flag.” The dis-comfort I will cause them will be astronomical,”for them.” Stand up patriots.     Why are the Hispanic children offended by the American flag, aren’t the also Americans? Do they hate America and are forced to be here? I don’t understand why they are not proud to be Americans and Hispanic. I have Hispanic friends who asked me to take 4th of July pictures of their kids with the American flag. They love America and worked very hard to come here and become American citizens, but they also love Mexico. They go to Mexico 1 to 2 times a year to visit friends and family. Why can‘t we show our love for our country because someone in our country doesn’t feel the same way? Maybe the school is doing a bad job of teaching Hispanic students that America is a great country and they should be proud to be an American and still love and embrace being Hispanic.

    This is another attempt to destroy our AMERICAN culture and our origin, as I wrote yesterday. Last time I checked the Mexican flag was not the flag flying over our White House, THE PEOPLES HOUSE; it was the STARS AND STRIPES…the stars on the azure blue field showing that we would number the stars of heaven. It was the stripes…red and white…that showed the welts that we were lashed with by our ancient enemies, the Assyrian/Goths of the swastika, that we overcame…a flag of victory! Why can’t we remember that???…because it has been conveniently erased from our distorted history.

    This is crap. The Mexicans are in the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. We are not in Mexico. That kid has the right to fly the American flag. If the the Mexicans (prob illegal) then trot your ass back across the border.. If they are so proud of the Mexico and the Mexican flag then go back over there and fly your flag. That kid IS a American. He has a right to fly the flag. This is American and the school should be supporting AMERICANS not foreigners . This goes back to this tolerance BS. On this there should be none. It is a AMERICAN school right!!! Then fly the AMERICAN flag. IF we were in Mexico and a kid came to school with a American flag then yeah he should probably put it up. Since he would be in MEXICO!! We fly the American fly outside our home in several places. If you don’t like it. Then walk past the no trespassing sign posted, so i can get you on CCTV video and hold you a gun point til the cops get here and i can file charges.

      I do not believe how rude that comment is! I mean what was he supposed to do?? Sit and watch a mexican jump Cody and hurt him? No! He did it for Cody’s safety! And I consider myself patriotic, so don’t not call me it! My father is, and my grandfather was, a veteran. I have all the respect for them! But I also, care about students like me, staying safe.

    Please everyone write their Senator and congressmen and ask them to intoduce a bill that makes it Federal Law, that an American Citizen has the right to either display or not display the flag. And no action can be brought against anyone wishing to do so. This stuff has to stop NOW!!

      Actually Canada is in the process of passing that law -not an ethnic issue but to keep neighborhood or condo organizations from restricting flag displays for “esthetic” reasons.

      I really miss Texas because of that attitude. People in Texas respect the flag more than any other state I’ve seen or heard about. Texans love their rights, freedoms and flag.

      You are absolutely correct. I have lived in Texas my entire life and nowhere else will you find the level of patriotism for both state and country that you find here. It has been a point of mockery at times for those in other states, especially California and New York, but you never hear those kinds of stories here in Texas because we will not put up with it.

    Just another example of just how much out of step with reality California really is! The flag is a symbol of this country that we live in, and we have to “hide it” because it might be to congroversial. Ok, I really do think I’m in some nutty parallel universe or something! I mean, every post office has a flag … every government office displays a flag … the President when he speaks is flanked by the flag … but we can’t have a child that is a US Citizen display the banner of his country. I dunno

      This is why I‘m glad we didn’t get the Olympic bid. People from all over the world would come to our country with their flags to support their country and the US would ban Americans form bringing flags to the events or cheering too loud because it could offend the other countries. Then if we started to win too many medals we would have to stop playing so the other countries could get some medals and feel good.

      Here’s an idea. If it isn‘t a building devoted to international affairs and it has a foreign nation’s flag displayed on the property, then burn the foreign nation’s flag. And if someone is in possession or displaying the american flag on american soil and someone gives them an order to stop displaying the flag or attempts to confiscate it for the purpose of removing it from sight, then call the FBI and report that person for Treason.

      No worries here folks. The school districts in California have a never ending supply of our tax dollars to fight the lawsuits that they bring on themselves. I am sure this will end in a nice settlement for the boy, and deservedly so. The state and it‘s school districts constantly burn tax dollars at the altar of political correctness for they are taught that their brand of beliefs are the people’s beliefs and must be religiously protected from the Constitution.

      The principal, or the school board, should be saying,: “This is America… in this country we fly OUR flag, the stars and stripes.” This is NOT Mexico. Mexicans who are here legally should be willing to fly only OUR flag, since they obviously came here to be citizens. Those that are here illegally should be told that they are NOT ALLOWED to fly the Mexican flag. Period.

      Wait NO! Northern California is VERY diffrent. WWII kept Nor Cal & South OR from becoming a seperate state. The people are much more like eachother than the So Cal & Nor OR Libs. Trust me that guy will get allota lashback over this.

      I have sent my email to the Superintendent of the school … I let him know that California is (for now) part of the United States of America and that is anyone is “offended” then they need to learn some geograpy (Mexico is NOT part of the United States) and history. OLD GLORY — long may it wave! and I supported Cody by name!

      The only problem with this idea is that Obama would then give them billion in foreighn aid. LOL. Seriously, any person that would want to live in California is irrational and may be totaly nuts. The citizens of this state deserve every disater tht is heaped on them becuase theya re all fools. I am sur that if kids in this school brough Mexican flage is would be consider a sourse fo national pride. About 25 years ago I was stationd in Del Rio Texas, and was taken aback when I saw the Mexican flag actually flying on a pole next to the American flag at a public elementary school. Of course the Mexicans probably thought the school was part of their school system since about a quarter of the kids came across the border daily to attend this school for free on the local property tax payer’s dime. How do I know this? Because occasionally they would shut down the border and school attendence dropped by about 25 percent on those days. What did the local school district do about it? Absolutely NOTHING. I am not a racist. I am however tired of picking up the tab for people who flaunt our laws and come there to get handouts because their government is to inept and corrupt to take care of its own citizens. I am sorry, but it isnot our responsiblity absorb these people into our country while others are waiting legally in line for their opprotunity. If you don’t agree then its just to bad..

      Amen! The only reason it is controversial is because the administration has allowed it to be – no kahonies. The buck stops at the top so if they had dealt with their, so called, problem from the start (that’s assuming there really is a problem and not just anti-American sentiment by a Hispanic administrator) this would no occur.

      Glenn,…i have thought about this alot lately. I believe FOX,and their affiliates could create an AMAZING,GOOD NATURED,(CHILDRENS ALTERNATIVE TV ENTERTAINMENT STATION.)
      Based on Morals and Values we ALL share> “Unlike Disney and that sort”…incase you are not aware of the dirt they produce for kids entertainment on ANY of their stations…
      Lets face it,Television is a part of most housholds,some more than others. Not much the case in ours,but still….what programing choices do i have for my child?….nothing i can assert,is of true worth and of positive nature…………………………………………….
      ……….Anyone reading this post…….maybe we should all write to FOX about the idea……the children are the future……let them be children and NOT numb.

      Yep, I just wrote to the Superintendent of schools, too. I don’t care if California is Liberal, Conservative, or Socialist – they are part of the USA. Thus, should be able to fly our flag every day at their school, and to hell with whoever becomes offended. Let them look around and see what country is giving them an education. I suggest we write our senators and congressman, no matter what state, and protest this demonizing of a small boy for flying the American Flag. What has this country come to? And what damage has it done to this boy, so proud of his grandfather, and wanting to join the military some day to fight for our rights. He is probably is very well-behaved, smart student. By singling him out like this may affect his entire future life, irreperably. God, please help this sick country.

      that is bullsh*** if he was flying the muslim flag they probably would have given him an a for effort, it is time to turn this country around like it used to be, remember when we were kids we always said the pledge of allegance to the flag and learned about gorge washington and the cherry tree, abe lincoln, my son is 17 years old and i have been asking him for years if he has learned about our founding fathers and early american history and he says no, the left has toatlly corrupted the education process

      I live in California and I am just like you. The problem is we have to many wannabe pelosi’s out there. Up and down the bay area it is a liberal disease. Not to mention other elements. There are good Californian’s out there!!!! I have also called the superintendent office but no answer. We need a big earthquake to separate the bay area from the valley.
