Calif. School Reportedly Bans Teachers From Displaying Santas & Christmas Trees in Classrooms

A Stockton, California, school is finding itself at the center of the annual War on Christmas debate after teachers were told that they won’t be allowed to display Santas, Christmas trees — even Poinsettia plants this year. The ban, of course, is intended to prevent religious discrimination.
A bulletin that teachers reportedly received purportedly says that educators are allowed to decorate with benign snowflakes and snowmen, as these items are “safe” and not attached to religion. The document apparently read, “District office would like to remind everyone when displaying holiday decorations in and around school to be mindful no association to any religious affiliation i.e. Santa, poinsettias, Christmas trees, etc.”
The Claudia Landeen School, part of the Lincoln Unified School District, is a kindergarden through grade eight public educational facility. District Superintendent Tom Uslan explained the reasoning behind the ban, saying that since there are a “myriad of religious affiliations (at the school) we don’t want a pervasive theme of a class to represent one religious affiliation.”
While Uslan claims that there have been no complains at the school thus far, the ban is capturing media coverage and attention. “If the school doesn’t want to do it, I can take them to the mall,” said Annie Dunaway-Costain, a parent. “If they don’t want to do it, it’s their choice. It‘s not something I’d fight over.”
But Jim Dunn, a local pastor at First Baptist Church, has a different view on the matter. “I think one of the traditions that happens to be a very American tradition for many of us (is) Christmas,” he said. “I don’t see any problem for other religions being able to display a menorah at that time of the year.”

A spokesperson for the district, though, denied that a letter or communication had been sent to teachers. In an interview with Fox News & Commentary, the spokesperson said, “There has been no letter from district administration. There has been no policy edict from our school board.” The representative continued:
“There was a conversation to encourage administrators that each of our employees should enjoy their religious freedoms but we don’t want to have a pervasive theme of a classroom or public office to represent a specific religious affiliation unless we are formally teaching topics regarding those affiliations.”So does that mean teachers can decorate their classrooms with Santa Claus and poinsettias?
Regardless of whether a letter was actually sent, the spokesperson reiterated that religious elements cannot be “the pervasive theme” in classrooms. Thus, one culture cannot trump another at the school. The definition of “pervasive theme,” though, may be difficult to pin down.

Posted on December 6, 2011 at 1:42pmSo how about all those teachers working through the Christmas time untill they can change the term to “holiday” time off. And for all the other jerks out there that want to call it a “holiday”, please refuse your next “Christmas” bonus and wait for your “Holiday” bonus. So isn’t it giving “Atheist” preferential treatment by not allowing MY beliefs?

Posted on December 6, 2011 at 1:59pmBut its totally alright to showcase ethnic traditions, cultural heritage, students to trumpet in front of their respective classes how great their race is and what it has to offer that might be better for America than the all White unpainted canvas that still exists today. Forget about whats already here, just move along now.

Posted on December 6, 2011 at 2:04pmThere soon will be no real reason for them to even hold recognition for this Christ centered holiday. Thats exactly what they are doing. Once the window is moved, one will have to ask why even stop to celebrate something that has no basis in fact (according to them). No Santa and no Jesus. They will remove all traditions and soon a child will one day grow up and ask what Christmas was all about and who is was this Santa guy anyways. They may also ask Did you guys really lie to children about a man who would bring presents to children all over the world all the while knowing that most children in the world will not receive any such gifts. It will be so distorted in just several years in the future, we will also ask ourselves the same questions. This is how you move a shared tradition into extinction. Just as they have done with marriage being soley between a man and a woman. The child now asks the teacher…Ms Jones? Will you marry a man or a woman?

Posted on December 6, 2011 at 2:44pmWasn’t CA the state that had a week of Islamic studies where the students had to dress as muslims and learn their religion(?)/political agenda and attend a mosque? What would happen if a Christian was in a muslim school and wanted time off for Christmas? I know, a Christian would never be in a muslim school or even be allowed to attend. Enough is enough. These are the traditions of America and to deprive our children of these traditions is nothing short of insane.

Posted on December 6, 2011 at 2:49pmThis issue goes back to the 1970′s when Jewish students in my home town felt a tad left out in terms of where time and money was spent relative to celebrations. It is a valid point and given the onslaught of lack of support for schools that has resulted in budget cuts the money is better spent on education. Perhaps just reimbursing the teachers who often buy supplies with their own money.

Report Post »NHwinter
Posted on December 6, 2011 at 4:22pmBiblequotin – I understand you are a purist and that is a great thing when it comes to Jesus. But there are some American traditions that are fun for children and I hope we keep them. Santa originally came from St. Nicholas who gave presents out of love for the Lord. The Christmas tree was pagan, but its meaning has changed to represent the birthday of Jesus. When my children were little I gave all the secular symbols of Christmas a Christian meaning with Jesus as the center. I certainly don’t speak for Jesus, but I bet He smiles when children delight in His birthday and remember Him. We always started our Christmas morning with placing baby Jesus in the manger and saying a prayer to thank God for giving us His Son.

Posted on December 6, 2011 at 4:32pmTeachers get a single salary for a contract school year. They don’t get “Bonuses” Christmas or otherwise, and they don’t get paid more when they give up vacations and weekends to do school work. Occassionally, a teacher will get extra pay, but it’s usually for sponsoring/coaching an extra-curricular activity. Chaperoning dances and afterschool games may be required and performed for no extra pay. And most districts that I have worked in call it “Winter Break” and the one around Easter is called “Spring Break”. Now, why don’t you ask the Jewish, Muslim and Buddhist kids how they feel about the “secular” holiday of Christmas. They get pretty bored with Santa by about Third Grade. I raised two Jewish daughters, who, by the way, often ended up explaining Christian traditions to both their Protestant and Catholic schoolmates, as well as the Jewish ones. Kids should be taught religion at home, and they can practice it at school by being good people. Would you really like it if a Muslim kid was facing East and praying the Shahadah during the school day? Or what about missing lunch so they don’t have to watch other kids eat during Ramadan? How would you feel about that?

I’m sick of empowering these losers on the outs of society & trying to coddle them into believing they belong. You have the freedom to not join in & celebrate it. Posted on December 6, 2011 at 10:19pmRegardless of Santa’s origin, to most kids he’s now a fat guy in a red suit that lives at the north pole and flies around in a sleigh giving out gifts and eating cookies and milk and that has JACK CRAP to do with Jesus. Christmas as a holiday of giving is for everyone now. Christmas as Jesus’ birthday is for christians. But, without someone telling a kid that Santa is connected to Jesus, there’s no obvious connection. So get over it, and let kids have christmas characters. DUMB.

Posted on December 6, 2011 at 1:39pmFirst of all, most of the trappings of Christmas (Santa, the Christmas Tree, the Holy Night) are not even remotely Christian in nature, they are all part of the ancient Northern European winter solstice celebration Yule that Christian missionaries grafted their religion onto in order to gain converts. The modern American version of Christmas has even less authentic relation to Christianity for most people, as it has become an entirely secular and uniquely American holiday focusing on the exchanging of gifts. As a result it is not Christianity these people are banning from school, it is American culture. Coming from California this does not surprise me in the slightest.

In all likelyhood Christ actual birth date was in September. That too matters not as we have sat aside a day to celebrate his birth at a time when long nights start getting shorter and the days start getting long. Signifying the end of darkness ofshame and the begining of light of forgiveness.
What this particular decision shows is that liberals progressive aren‘t including they’re excluding in practice. Even something as inclusive as Christmas which like you said encompasses pagans,Jewish and christian holidays together is considered offensive.

It is yet another tradition that has been taken over by Madison Ave. If people spent half as much time rejoicing in the religious aspect of the season as they do shopping, the world would be a much better place.

Posted on December 6, 2011 at 3:43pmInteresting that the religious and the politically Occupiers both criticize over-spending / greed associated with Christmas . The religious because they think that the over- commercialization is a distraction from the spiritual meaning of Christmas and the political Lefties because they hate “capitalism.“ Again I think it shows that we have separated church and state and also replaced ”social justice” politics for the old Christian doctrines. This is especially difficult when the dispute surrounds a long celebrated religious holiday. Holy Day to holiday to “just say no” day…..

So, by this definition, Progressives feel it is their right to discriminate against the Christian religion, because the other religions don’t celebrate this holiday. Were you all born morons or is this a learned condition?
I am sorry, please explain to me how Santa suddenly became a religious figure? Oh, my bad, is it because he brings gifts only to Christian children? I think he brings gifts to those who want to celebrate Christmas, regardless of religion. Do Atheist celebrate Christmas? I would gander that would be a YES!
Did it ever occur to these yahoo’s you define what Christmas means based on your own beliefs? Christians celebrate it as Christ birth and the joy of giving gifts second; Atheist see it as giving gifts and celebrating with friends.

I will still celebrate the birth of Christ into the world on any and everyday of my remaining time here. Dec 25th is a lie to begin with . “Christians and Pagans both celebrate Christmas.” Not this one, we celebrate Saturnalia. Christmas would be celebrating the birth of your messiah, and it would be disrespectful to your religion if I incorporated your God into my Lararium.”
“So I guess a department stores should not sell ornaments, Christmas tree’s or offer customers great deals on Black Friday, as they should only celebrate these things at home and church.” You can celebrate how ever you wish to celebrate Christmas, but shouldn’t get all bent out of shape when a federal indoctrination camp (public school)decides not to celebrate it. When you are free to celebrate it however you wish. But from what I have learned from Christianity, the way Christmas is celebrated today seems to detract from it’s true meaning. Lights, trees, and “Santa Klause” are fine with me (at the very least to keep the economy going) but for a Christian to defend this (what has been turned into a secular holiday)
is laughab
