Calif. School Tells Elementary Students There Are More Than 2 Gender OptionsWho says elementary school is too early to start discussing gender issues?

This week, educators at Redwood Heights Elementary School in Oakland, California, are teaching young children all about the complicated world of “gender diversity.” The school has designed curriculum for every grade level. Amid the resulting controversy, Principal Sara Stone is defending the initiative, claiming that it is in line with what parents want:

“If we don’t have a safe, nurturing class environment, it’s going to be hard to learn. Really, the message behind this curriculum is there are different ways to be boys. There are different ways to be girls.”

A gender expert and trainer was brought in to speak to the children:

“[There's] a lot of variation in nature. Evolution comes up with some pretty funny ways for animals to reproduce. It turns out that there are not just two options.”

The trainer also told the children that this diversity applies to human beings as well. It is this rationale — that gender is pliable and that there are “more than two options” — that has some people frustrated. The San Francisco Chronicle has more on the curriculum:

A one-hour elementary school lesson on gender diversity featuring all-girl geckos and transgender clownfish…fourth- and fifth-grade students learned about the crazy world of gender within the animal kingdom with lessons about single-sex Hawaiian geckos, fish that switch genders and boy snakes that act “girly.”

Naturally, this has created an outrage. The idea that the school district would cover such complex issues with young children has led the conservative Pacific Justice Institute, among other groups, to get involved. According to The Washington Post, “Conservative legal defense organizations are providing counsel to parents who oppose the teaching at Redwood Heights by a gender spectrum trainer.”

What do you think about this? Is it appropriate for this age group or not?

    Did you notice that the two forms of animals they use to describe the sexual diversity in the animal kingdom our reptiles and fish. I belive that tempature during incubation determins what sex they will be, and also they ocupy such a small niche they can change how they repurduce.

      so now when little johnny gets little jill pregnant, they will be able to decide what it will be ,by letting it incubate ,at least that is what they will be taught, but when reality hits,man they will be in for some big surprises, if they continue to believe this crap, then they will have a gecko for a baby, what a bunch of progressive stupidity.

      First, I completely am against this crap being taught in schools. That is why my school aged kids go to a parochial school. Also, as for clownfish, they are all born male when the eggs hatch, nothing to do with temperature. The bigger ones will fight to become female. When that female dies, it starts over again. But in order to fertilize the eggs, you still need the male. They leave that important information out. They twist the facts around according to their agenda. If you bought two clownfish, not a mated pair, one would change sex into a female. That is the way that species is designed. How do I know? I have a saltwater tank and have two clownfish that have just starting mating. I bought one and a couple weeks later I bought another one. I just had to make sure the second one was bigger to change into the female. If I did not, they would have fought each other until one died. Another interesting fact is, the male guards the eggs and the female can go off and do whatever. Feminists should like that one!

    Notice that they are just talking about expressing yourself while maintaining the boy/girl dichotomy. The idea that nature creates arbitrary human expressions such as fashion, fabric choice, and sex-specific colors like pink and blue is pretty silly though. You can that numbskull psychologists like John Money for that bit of nonsense.

    Different ways to be boys and girls? Great. But their “expert” seems to blend biology, evolution, and political movements together in a haphazard fashion that makes anything they say pretty meaningless. So what is really the point? Probably to spread misinformation to push an agenda. There is nothing wrong with being different, but too often there are ulterior motives and the “different” people are used and thrown away by these political propaganda campaigns. It’s a bunch of self-serving people making a living off of others, and that’s about it.

Sorry……..children donot need this information, I’d take my kids out of any place that supports sex education in this manor. Besides this all is against most religious teachings.

    Reading, writing and arithmetic, that is what should be taught in Elmentary School. Leave the social issues to the parents, thank you. If the schools are going to be having a course like this, they had better send home permission slips to the parents so that they can decline to have their kids attend.

      Leave the Social issues to the parents?

      The schools teach tolerance and acceptance. If it was up to people like you, Segregation would still be allowed in our schools.
      I remember being inspired when I was 12 years old when I first heard about the Little Rock 9 and how they stood up to ingorant people like yourself.

      When you dig up a human grave, you find either a male or a female. You do not find a he/she, she/he, a she that likes a he and a she, or a he that likes a he and a she… This is not being closed minded…this is not falling for every philosophy that some self proclaimed intellectual decides to spew… Put the spew to the test…Take a group of he‘s who like he’s…place them on an island.       Life is tough being a transexual conservative but, thats who I have been all my life. I grew up in conservative Indiana in a conservative household. I always KNEW I was different growing up and it had nothing to do with liberal influances. 40 years ago there wasnt alot of information out there on the subject. Science and medicine have evolved so much over the years and can really help younger people like me. Transexuals have the highest incidence of suicide of any group in the US. I would have really appreciated this kind of information when I was growing up.

      My father is right handed and has beautiful hand writting. When he started school he was left handed and had that wicked habbit beat out of him with a yard stick every time he touched a pencil with his left hand. Being left handed wasnt NORMAL back then and as my dad explained over many years it was not tollerated either. Left handed people no longer recieve that treatment in schools, I wonder why?

      Never the less, I am still a conservative. When things get worse in this country I will share a fox hole and cover the backs other conservatives as we try to restore our country. Too bad some conservatives would shoot me in the back rather thatn have me on thier side. Thats narrow mindedness.

      I am also an honorabley dischared VETERAN and a life long member of the Luthern Church. For some reason Lutherns do not like Catholics telling them how to live. That arguement is 400+ years old tho,,,lol

      My issue is that it’s public education and so young. None of the information presented seems technically wrong, but I agree children can’t really put it into context at that age. They have enough to learn – best to leave until they’re older. No child will really care if another little boy wants to wear a dress or a little girl likes to play at kissing with other little girls.

      I don‘t think that’s correct, as sex ed is part of almost every curriculum (and for good reason; most parents don’t care enough). Good parents will teach their kids; and if they don’t, then the schools at least give them the facts. Putting the proper context (religious, cultural, whatever you believe) is the job of parents. Schools present the facts and parents organize them… hopefully.

      Hmmmm, if schools presented the facts, they’d tell kids that sex outside of marriage can net you diseases that can kill you, make you go insane, or prevent you from having children when you decide the time is right. It can also present you with a horrible decision to murder a tiny unborn baby, or get married and tend to your responsibilities (of course the schools favor door #1).

      But nope, the schools teach kids to have sex as early as possible and as much as possible. If it feels good, DO IT. And if you get preggy, tell us and we can get you transportation to a clinic that can “take care of your problem.” Mommy and Daddy need not know.

      Yep, the schools teach facts. And the fact is you are sounding an awful lot like a dummy right now.

    This is definately not age appropriate. Where the hell are the parents? Were permission slips signed? Were any permission slips even given out? Here in KY, any topic covered, such as what happens to girls and boys bodies during puberty, we got permission slips. We even had a permission slip when Dumbo gave his inauguration speech! Thank the Lord I don’t live in Kalifornia. Oh, and I thought geckos were only on tv…………oops guess my hillbilly ignorance is showing.

      I was born and raised in Maryland and my first child started in public school there. One day a note was sent home stateing that if a child was misbehaving in school and was punished for misbehaving at home with a spanking child services would be at your door lickity split. That’s when my sweet little family moved to the beautiful state of Tennessee. Great place too raise a family!!!!! The progressive states have alot too learn and they need to let the parents raise their own children. God Bless

      I also live in our beloved Commonwealth, my friend…..but always remeber that California has been used by the Progressives as their “proving ground”. They try out their agenda there, and then they ship it out nationwide…..I was curious about this “gender expert and trainer” who told the children that “Evolution comes up with some pretty funny ways for animals to reproduce”….when I went to school, we found out that for humans to reproduce, it takes a male and a female…..not two males….not two females….and certainly not a male/female, a dancing donkey, and a circus midget to reproduce. Perhaps they have come up with a new formula in California????

I agree home school .. or private .. but no way would I send my child to public school .. in fact many many years ago I pulled my son out and sent him to a Catholic high school .. best thing I ever did for him.

      Homeschooling is the best anyone can do for their kids. There are tons of wonderful curricula that provide a well rounded classical education. Homeschooling is not a cost prohibitive/time-consuming as some believe. There are “in-a-box” curricula like Calvert, Sonlight, Abeka, etc and then when one grows more comfortable in homeschooling one could move in to an a la carte style to better fit each subject need for the child.

      Thanks to all the pioneer home schoolers who drew a line in the sand when everyone thought they were nuts! Because of them being willing to bear the scoffs, this right is now intrenched. I home school, and while it’s a sacrifice of time and energy, I’m grateful to be able to do it. There are so many vendors (good old American capitalism) that support home schooling that there’s really nothing to be missed anymore! Go for it!

      Every Parent should have their children bring home all their school books and go over every one of them. The should form a group to censor what the children are being taught. What ever happen to the PTA???
      If they find things contrary to their beliefs, things that are added that contrary to their ideas, or things left out that are important to the foundation of our GOD given, American rights, propaganda designed to brainwash our children or things that are sexually oriented (something that does NOT belong in a school but it the right of the parent to teach their child)
      They should form rallies at the schools and protest the garbage being taught by the schools!!!!
      They should INSIST that what is being taught is OFFENSIVE to them!!!!!
      They should INSIST on having the right to vote on ALL books put before their children
      We HAVE NO OTHER CHOICE
      The system will not change anything if the Parents do not act!!!!!

      Anyone notice the advertisement at the bottom? Maytag? cool one more thing I will never purchase. Im getting to the point where I cant hardly buy anything, drive anything or watch any program or movie like susan sarandon, spicoli, rosie O, on and on I have stopped entirely supporting any and all that don’t support the USA and the Constitution/Bill of Rights. Dont they get it the bung doesn’t get wet for a reason. That even grosses me out. But think about it.

      If it were a “born that way” matter the science would have borne that out.
      This is encouraging experimentation beyond the norm.

      TIme to defund the US dept of ed. and give the schools back to the states.
      No wonder any other country is ahead of us in education.
      School is no longer about learning, it is about socializing in the US.
      EVERYONE should be homeschooling,
      Start groups of families, Start a community or religious based school.
      Pool resources and subject expertiese.

      In Newton, MA (in the greater Boston area), there was a first grade teacher who decided to teach “her” class, without prior parental notification, about how “she” was once a man before having an operation to change that. The little kiddies were confused and many required psychiatric counseling afterwards. Parents were outraged that they weren’t notified and given a choice as to whether or not their children should be exposed to this, but the superintendant and principal were unapologetic and defiant that nothing wrong occurred and that the parents didn’t have any say in the matter. The teacher and school officials remained in their positions and the parents couldn’t make any ground legally or through governmental channels. That’s not even mentioning “Fistgate” (look it up) and K-12 Boston Public Schools’ Gay Pride Week. Parental rights don‘t exist in the Democratic People’s Republic of Massachusetts. Children are to be taken by the state and raised by teachers in accordance to state-approved doctrine.

      I guess the country is reaching a pivotal point in it’s history. Progressives and liberals want to expand our minds our collective consciousness and our tolerance by challenging the norms so far accepted in society. Conservatives and Reactionaries want to pretend that homosexuality hasn’t existed as long as **** sapien sapiens have and exists in almost every specie in the animal kingdom, they want to pretend that we can return to 1950s culture if we just cut down the governmental tree grown to solve our communal problems.       I’ve noticed that the conservative majority here objects to this. But, if you follow the constitution then the school/the state is well within it’s rights. The entire point of having states (ie 10th amendment) is if you don’t like how things are ran in one state you could move to another. So if you don‘t like what they’re teaching your kids in Commiefornia then you should move to another state like OK. Just saying.

      No, there’s two. If you count natural hermaphrodites, maybe three, but they stand out because they‘re the two combined and we all recognize that there’s a genetic defect going on that involves the two genders. The rest are little more than choice. A gay man is still a man, and a lesbian is still a woman. Transgendered are, frankly, whatever they were born, surgery doesn‘t change how you were born it simple mangles what’s present. That leaves nothing else.

      The school brought in a gender expert?! I am a gender expert. My guess is that most of us are gender experts but the fact that some bozo has a title indicating “Gender Expert” is more than scary. I am also a heterosexual, Christian, meat-eating, dog-loving, capitalistic, english speaking, Mrs. who is very grateful for Christopher Columbus, George Washington and ALL our soldiers and patriots who have served the USA. When are we going to address these issues without twisting them until they are unrecognizable?

      When I lived in San Francisco, I took some community college classes for fun. They were hosted at a local middle school (James Lick), and there were anti-homophobia posters EVERYWHERE on the school walls.

      You’d think it was the single most important issue confronting students these days.
