Calif. Teacher Punishes Students for Saying ‘God Bless You’

When someone sneezes, a common response is, “God bless you.” But one California teacher finds this statement so offensive and disruptive that he’s working to cut back on its usage in the classroom.

Steve Cuckovich, a health teacher at William C. Wood High School in Vacaville, California, has attempted to banish the friendly gesture, as he believes it is both disrespectful and disruptive. To punish students who do, indeed, say “God bless you” after one of their classmates sneezes, he purportedly knocks 25 points off of their grade.

While this story may seem unbelievable at first glance, Cuckovich, himself, has commented on the classroom ban. According to KFSN, he says that the policy isn’t about religion. He simply believes that the gesture is outdated and that it is disruptive. He says:

“When you sneezed in the old days, they thought you were dispelling evil spirits out of your body. So they were saying, ‘god bless you’ for getting rid of evil spirits. But today, I said what you‘re doing doesn’t really make any sense anymore.”

Parents, of course, are outraged, especially considering the fact that this move very clearly stands to impose Cuckovich’s view on the classroom. The school has come to agree with concerned parents, with the teacher now pledging to implement a more palatable punishment for the offense.

Interestingly, a Twitter account registered to a “Steve Cuckovich,” with a bio that reads, “High school teacher, father of three w/two grandkids and one on the way,” sent two tweets to leftist intellectual Cornel West’s Twitter account in the past (West recently encouraged Days of Rage protesters to call for revolution):

Steve Cuckovich, teacher at William C. Wood High School in Vacaville, California….

Mind your own business and stop acting as though you have any authority in how our children are raised. You are a teacher with the responsibility of teaching curriculum.

Try pushing your personal beliefs on my child and I will beat your ass. Period, end of story.

Amen. This teacher needs to be slapped off his mock pedestal of intellectual superiority. This is what the progressives would have if they had their way. Youth raised by the state in a communal society for the “common good”. Typical Hillary fascist mind control with a smiley face on the package. Makes me sick…

He should be reprimanded for his policy of knocking points off grades for what he deems are infractions. Grades are earned and cannot be messed with for enforcement purposes of some kind. You can suspend a student or require a student to stay after school but you cannot shave points off their grades.

Say how you really feel. No, all kidding aside, who does this teacher think he is? We hire these people (teachers) to provide a service, nothing more. All this crap about them not being paid enough surely must be instigated by the unions. They get a full year’s salary and only work half to three quarters of the year. And try to get one fired. Nearly as impervious as owe-bummer.

It is frustrating to me that so many conservatives hand over their kids to the state for “FREE” care & education. Our state-run education system is a monstrosity that is feeding our crumbling nation with a mass of poorly educated population that will willingly swallow all things anti-liberty. Rather than expecting the agenda-driven educators and administrators to be something that who and what they are, why not start a mass exodus out of the state-run education system. Imagine if every PROFESSING conservative put their actions where their rhetoric is and gave their children a real education (i.e. homeschool). We would have quite a generation to rise up to secure freedoms that previous generations so foolishly squandered. If you send your kids to the state school you will get a state education — think Nazi youth movement.

If this was a story about a Christian teacher demanding people say “God Bless You” after someone sneezes, we’d have 10,000 anti-God progressives marching on the school and demanding this teacher’s firing.

However, this is about a progressive anti-Christian teacher trying to implment his views on children that he’s indoctrinati…er, I mean teaching. Unfortunately, we are not vocal … we blog about our “outrage” and thoughts all the time but we don’t act upon them. We are big, strong, brave people behind a keyboard, but we ain’t crap in the world with progressives! Sad. So very sad.

Every person outraged by this event should be calling that school administration for this “teacher” to be severely reprimanded and anyone within 50 miles of that school should be organizing to march on it and put a stop to this nonsense. Until those sort of things begin to happen and we who believe in this Republic get involved it will continue to devolve.

Reprimand the teacher. This kind of arbitrary cleansing of anything the teacher has political or ideological grievances against is an abuse of the children and his position. These children have been raised by their parents to offer the social courtesy “bless you” when they see someone sneeze. It’s origins are irrelevent. Just like “oh my God” or “for Christ’s sake” has become an exclamation rather than a religious entreaty to the lord. But this militant SOB wants to undermine the parents’ teaching, by imposing his own ideology on the students. It‘s truly Orwellian in it’s overtones…he’s essentially invoking “thoughtcrime” in order to cleanse even passing references to religion and so remove them from the public psyche. And just like “thoughtcrime” he’s punishing anyone that thinks to utter the phrase. Vulgar in the extreme. Nauseating little man. He needs to be firmly and substantively disciplined.

I say that the parents of every student in every one of his classes start sneezing and every other student tells them God Bless You. Then another student can “sneeze” and over and over again throughout that day and every day that he works there. Let them try to punish every student or even a large majority of them and see what happens. He is NOT the speech police and he is more of a disruption to the students learning than all of the students put together. Blazers here is an opportunity to shine. Randy above makes a great suggestion; let us all send a respectful educating email to the principal on our 1st amendment rights. CDeGraw@vacavilleusd.org

Like every thing else in our Constitution our 1st amendment freedom is being infringed and perverted.  Separation of Government from religion is a valid factual point made by Jefferson to the Danbury Baptists.

Jefferson reassured the Baptists there is a wall or fence that separates GOVERNMENT from ruling over, in, or about religion. That one denomination would not be established by Government and infringe on the minority Baptists beliefs.

Today this separation is taught either to not exist, which is false and leads to Government intrusion into Churches, or that this Separation is Religion not being involved in Government which as well is false. We must stand in truth and proclaim this separation appropriately. That is our responsibility and duty as citizens and believers.

      Posted on September 29, 2011 at 4:58pm

I’ve found this separation is best described as a two way mirror with Government on the side of the mirror. Government can not see, talk to, or even acknowledge religion. Government can do nothing but see it’s own reflection, the people who make Government. Religion, being able to see Government, can direct the people making Government, not thru law but thru gestures, influence, and guidance. This is how and why we can shine our religious practices thru Government, by the guidance of non forceful religion, and why Government has Zero say of, in, or about religion. I hope this makes sense.

For the teacher to say “God bless you” is not allowed due to his religious beliefs and lowering of grades based upon it is a clear abuse of this students rights. He can say it isn’t about religion but it is. He just chooses not to believe it. He would be upset if he were forced to say “God Bless You” or lose 25% of his salary each time. That too would infringe his beliefs, his rights.

Do the right thing and send the principal a letter. Takes 2 minutes. Let’s stand in truth!

      REDWHITEANDBLUEUNIVERSE RE: “Ass beating”

That’s pretty much my initial reaction. I shamefully admit to have a weird fantasy about going to the hospital with one of these bullies. Specifically, to have my foot removed from their hindquarters.

That said, how about borrowing from their playbook instead? How can we, using the legal tools at our disposal, ridicule and isolate these knuckleheads.

Shame is a powerful disincentive. Clearly, jerks like this feel no shame. Really, they expect to be lauded by their pals (usually its only three). And you know what? They will be.

Beck makes a point about us surrounding them. I believe he’s right. Unfortunately by agreeing with Beck, I am forced to carry the point to its logical conclusion. Specifically, its our fault that idiots feel empowered to bully our kids. We substitute empty threats describing what we will do if he dares cross us for the immediate action that prevents recurrence. We’re failing to protect our brothers today and we will therefore be victims ourselves tomorrow.

I’m of the mind that jerks like this need to be shamed and humiliated for their brazen transgressions and those that defend them need to feel the sting of rebuke for doing so.

Shame is a powerful weapon. We don’t need no stinking government help… we can help ourselves.

Meantime, I’d be homeschooling, after having made my point that this is a free country where the government shall make no laws regarding an institution of religion, which is exactly what his punishment in a government institution is. And I’d have reminded him that we have freedom of speech.

Yes Indeed, Once again, one peepee cries foul, and by the 1st Amendment he has the rlght to bitch but he’s the Bitch. Same with the coachs in Tenn were reprimanded for honoring the students who were praying after the football game was over and weither the coachs were praying silently, because God knows our hearts, or they were respectfull of the students and did’nt want to interupt the students Constitutional right to worship as their hearts and minds so choose. The teacher must be fired for useing his position to impose his “ISM’ and mostly by cutting grades and degrading every student he has taught. Better to say “God Bless You” than “ Allah curse you infedal” Just the mention of the name of Jesus, seems to bring out the ‘Spirit of the Age” rageing at just the mention of Him unless it’s used to curse anything and everything, and it seems you can’t go an hour or day without hearing my Lords name cursed. But so it is as was prophesied. Just who was this man Jesus? A Christian Patriot

This teacher is a perfect example of why we need to get education out of the governmental sector and back into the hands of the private sector and controlled by the parents.
Look how well government controlled eduction is working for the Muslims and their madrases, educating children to blow themselves up while murdering their neighbors. Remember Islam is a government and a Nation not just a Cult. All their teachings are driven by their pastors who have the power of LAW behind their teachings and rulings. Only a moral and righteous people can live in a free society. Muslims are not free, believing they can get to paradise by their own efforts. Salvation by works… not likely. The Guy who runs paradise has the final and only say.

And this is about 1 teacher in about 7.2 billion? We are all guilty? No wonder America is dumbing down…
We hire these people (teachers) to provide a service, nothing more. All this crap about them not being paid enough surely must be instigated by the unions. They get a full year’s salary and only work half to three quarters of the year.
Ohh! I didn’t realize we were hired for nothing more than to provide a service… for kids? For organizing on our free time student visits to convalescent hospitals? Coaching sports! Working 60 hour weeks for supposedly M-F? Taking summer University classes that are so expensive that no matter how long I work I will never recoup that tuition? Um… it’s not a full year’s salary… it’s prorated for all 12 months. And… it’s not very much, believe me. I’ve gone into debt since becoming a teacher. You don’t teach to make money, that’s for sure. You teach because you know the children are (obviously) the future. I left a higher paying job, because I felt the need.
Prove that. Prove it doesn’t make sense anymore. how the heck do you know that demons don’t exist? seriously, what is the proof, i have more proof they DO exist… take a look around you man.
Oh, sorry! I forgot about the demons!

Whoa – I hate to see how he punishes students for saying “Merry Christmas”! Seriously, I’d like to see his awesome class as a teacher; doesn’t he have worse behaviors to deal with than people wishing each other well (what “God bless you” has become, since no one believes in the reason it was originally said)? He‘s really punishing them for using God’s name, I’m sure. To make a big deal and call 3 words “disruptive” and “wasting class time” is just a ludicrous excuse. Just teach and stop wasting student’s freedoms of speech. I‘ll bet he doesn’t dock grades for their use of truly foul language. But just don’t say “God” or you’ll fail. That’s the bottom line and should be dealt with by either talking to the principal or school board.

It’s not ok for a teacher to ask students not to impose there beliefs on him, but if you don’t allow my little angel to impose our beliefs on you, I’m going to beat your ass. The classroom is the teachers space. He is in it all day and is incharge of it. I myself use the term myself. But I also respect others space and how they wish to be treated in it. If you disagree do not go there. How would you like it if I come to your work and start preaching the exact opposite of what you believe. Students who disagree with his teachings should take a different class. I’m sorry my mistake, your angel is the exception. my bad.

Guys…. it’s a video feed pulled from another TV station. If you don’t work on web sites at all, like I unfortunately do…..LOL. Some TV stations will give you a URL that you just paste into the code and text of the web page. You can also do this with most Youtube videos. Anyway, when you do this you have no control over the video…. it is coming from another web server…. one completely outside of the servers for The Blaze. It’s a great way to share video with other people w/o having to email a huge ass file, or it can save you money since you won’t have to keep the source file on your server… and continually chew up bandwidth broadcasting it. They can‘t control it when it’s just pasted in place like it probably is. Haven‘t looked at the code for this web page to tell for sure but I’m pretty sure that’s why it is the way it is. Saves money and time while getting the point across quickly.

The ideological connection matters. It not only demonstrates a connection between an ideology that calls for revolution, but that its adherents will not hesitate to use whatever authority they have to trample on the rights of others. Coupled with historical atrocities associated with the progressives, this connection is not minor. Not only do we have history to show us what they meant by revolution the past, we see in this incident that there is every reason to fear what they mean by revolution now.

Beck has been making this case for more than a couple years. The Blaze staff just added a little more to the substantial argument he’s been making.

If the teacher’s belief in the merits of godless socialism is sincere, then he should not be ashamed of it, and should be more than willing to accept the disciplinary consequences associated with stepping over a very bright line here.

I expect the teacher is still proud of his actions, as I expect that you are proud of your dismissive comments. That’s fine. Do what you must.

VENNOYE – The frequency of earthquakes in California has nothing to do with the state (along with the whole of the Eastern Pacific) falling into the ocean. By simply going to the usgs.gov site does not show you that frequency has anything to do with “falling into the ocean”. In fact it all depends on the type of fault which would cause such a disaster. @THIS_INDIVIDUAL: One possible explanation for the anti-California sentiment might be that people resent the idea, “as it goes in California, so it goes for the rest of the nation.” I think people are sick and tired of hearing that California is a cultural and economic bellwether for the rest of us; many of us (especially in “flyover country”) would prefer to distance ourselves from that ruinous slow-motion train wreck known as CA.
In this particular case, we can only hope that this “teacher” is an isolated, lonely exception in the California school systems.

QUIATA- “In this particular case, we can only hope that this “teacher” is an isolated, lonely exception in the California school systems” Many of the school districts here in the South Eastern part of the state are decent and would not tolerate this kind of behavior.

If this story is real, this teacher should be horsewhipped and removed from teaching.
The left is a cancer that is destroying our country…I am in my fifties and I don’t recognize my country anymore.
It is time to say “NO MORE!”

I’d bring some holy water in the next day and bless the classroom.

That wuold be awsome, but I’m sure they would close the school and do a million dollar clean up,
and arrest the child and his parents.

Easy as Pie, went to the school site, hit Site Map, found Steve and let him know that I hoped God would bless him and help him overcome his “Fascist tendencies”…

I agree with Carnac and where is the ACLU on this issue, this is an obvious attack on freedom of speech and religion.

People need to start pulling their children out of public schools in droves. Home school them, private school them anything to get them out of these indoctrination camps.

Amen! Though the Texas public schools aren’t nearly as PC and LGBT as California public schools are these days, we STILL prefer to homeschool our 13-year-old daughter and she–and our peace of mind as her parents–is/are all the better for it. As a former Californian (been there for the better portion of my 51 years, but recently relocated to southeastern Texas in August 2011), I know whereof I speak when it comes to far downhill California public schools (not all, certainly, but certainly a good number of them) have fallen when it comes to political correctness, LGBT indoctrination, and quality of education. We’ve already discovered, for ourselves, just how far California schools are, too, behind Texas, in particular, public schools, and I’m that much happier to know we made the right decision to get the heck out of California before it was too late.

Absolutely Smithclar. Our children will NEVER step foot in a public school. Our children will not be subjected to the socialist, Marxist, g/l agendas.

People like this freakshit Cuckoo simply reinforces our determination. ANY teacher that would tamper with a student’s grades as a means of punishment should be fired. He is probably a union bully as well.

If only more parents could pull their kids from public schools, it would sure send a message when their money starts dropping. Home school if you can’t afford private school. Or, start a charter school of like minded individuals. ANYTHING to keep them out of public schools and away from fools like this Cuckoo fool, socialists and pervs.

This nation is destroying itself with political correctness. I dare say that even in the old soviet union one could say ‘God bless you” if someone sneezed. I was told by a friend who was there that in Poland when it was communist…the schools had crucifixes on the walls..usually brought by teachers. Official grumbled but did not make them take them down. What have we become in the nation. God has left our schools because we have thrown him out (figuratively). Now our schools are hell holes. Teachers like this should be fired.
