Calif. Teachers Union Gives Shocking Protest Instructions: Harass Legislators, Shut Down Roads, Co-Opt Fire Drills

The California Teachers Association is planning a week’s worth of Wisconsin-style protests and rallies, from May 9-13, to “force legislature to pass tax extensions.”

That’s the short term objective of the “State of Emergency” protests, according to the website for the rallies (screen shot below). The longterm objective is to, “educate and convince communities to change tax structure and achieve tax fairness in order to achieve adequate, stable and ongoing funding for public education and essential public services.”

Calif. Teachers Union Gives Shocking Protest Instructions: Harass Legislators, Shut Down Roads, Co Opt Fire Drills

The “State of Emergency” website notes, “The week begins and ends with a group of educators (with others invited to join) taking over the State Capitol.”

KQED delivers some political context:

the days leading up to Governor Jerry Brown’s release of a revised budget next month, the state Capitol is going to be the scene of a major protest by teachers… one that could have shades of the marathon sit-in last month in Wisconsin.

Calling the event the “California State of Emergency,” teachers say their goal is to get the Legislature to pass a budget that includes some $11 billion in tax extensions, the same ones the governor still says he wants placed on a statewide ballot this year.

In a phone interview this afternoon, CTA president David Sanchez said the Wisconsin protests are indeed the model of the Capitol protest part of the events planned for the week of May 9-13. He says they intend to have a sit-in here at the Sacramento statehouse lasting all week, with six rallies in cities across the state on Friday the 13th.

“Our teachers are absolutely fed up with what’s happening right now,” said Sanchez.

The CTA was a big backer of Jerry Brown in the 2010 gubernatorial race, and remains so now. But the union is diverging from the governor on the issue of a special tax election, which Brown continues to insist could happen in September or as late as November.

CTA president Sanchez says that any election beyond the Guv’s preferred plan of June — where the taxes have expired and thus become tax increases — isn’t a politically winnable play.

How do the CTA members plan to pressure California lawmakers on the tax extensions? With an allegedly $1 million budget and a 10-page action plan. You can read the organization’s full list of possible activities, but we present to you this snapshot (hat tip Hot Air):

* Target the businesses of legislators in their home districts.

* Circle the offices of “problem legislators.” Target them with various actions.

* Picket/rally in front of legislators’ offices/homes.

* Follow targeted legislators for the entire day.

* Have students and parents do informational picketing for one hour outside their school site.

* Have parents and students camp in front of schools all night.

* Have teachers being laid off contact parents and other CTA members.

* Make phone calls on Parents’ Day. Call parents to tell them how their child is doing and then talk about the budget cuts and invite them to attend the rallies.

* Refrain from Shopping Day. Show the value of educators and other public employees and the economic contribution they make to local communities by refraining from shopping one day.

* Throw monopoly money in the toilet to show that all our money is going down the drain

* Publish a list of companies that are not paying their fair share of taxes. Send letters to these companies and the media and picket their offices. Withdraw funds from banks that are not paying their fair share. (Editor’s note: CTA is a tax-exempt organization.)

* One-day boycott of Microsoft and other corporations that are pushing failed education reform efforts.

* Turn fire/earthquake drill into crisis response drill to the budget cuts (involve students and the community)

* Attempt to close a major artery into town/cities

* Have celebrities involved in the demonstrations

* Dye hair red or wear red wigs

* Homeless encampments of students and teachers as they can afford a place to live

* Have people participate in a run across the state with a torch (like the Olympics)

* Statewide “A Day with No Teachers”

* Pay for everything with $2 bills to show true impact of teachers

* “Lights Out Day” during the week where educators teach in the dark

* Protest at an MLB game. Everyone wears a matching shirt and sits in one section. Have scoreboard acknowledge their presence (i.e., “pink-slipped teachers seated in section ___”)

According to a blogger at NBC’s Bay Area affiliate, the teachers are just wasting their time:

CTA  wants to take the action to oppose any attempts to impose an all-cuts budget. The union’s critics claim they are doing Wisconsin-style disruption of government. Both sides are wrong — becasuse they are overstating the importance of the takeover, and of the Capitol itself.

The takeover is really nothing more than political fun — in an old timey, quaint sort of way. No one does this sort of thing anymore, because  it’s a waste of time. Fiscal decisions aren’t made in the Capitol. Decisions on spending and taxation are made by formulas, laws and constitutional amendments that were long ago approved — mostly by voters themselves.

The budget is merely a formula of formulas. The legislature isn’t worth protesting — or inconveniencing with a Capitol takeover — because they have so little power. Lawmakers act mostly as a clean-up crew for the fiscal messes created by previous voter decisions. Constitutionally, legislators are janitors in California.

The trouble with CTA’s protest may be that it gives the mistaken impression that the legislature has the power to fix the budget mess. It doesn’t. So let‘s hope the teachers’ union makes clear that they are going to the Capitol not because the Capitol matters to the current fiscal debate — but because they want to change the California governing system so that future takeovers of the Capitol won’t be a complete waste of time.

When you read CTA bullet points like, “Work with organization like Ben & Jerry to have them create a labor-union flavored ice cream that can be sold at the rallies and in stores,” you can’t help but agree that these protests will be a “complete waste of time.”

“Tax fairness”? To progressives and unions, the richest 5% that pay 60% of all federal taxes are not paying enough and the 1/2 of the country that pay NO federal taxes and are getting a free ride are paying too much. How dumb must progressives and teachers (of all people!) be not to understand this inequity?

californians can’t drive on a majory artery without shooting at each other, so I think at least part of the plan should be rethought. Gotta wonder where the Union officers will be, oh by the television cameras, my bad.
Sometimes I think that the “takers” won’t be happy until every last soul in America, excepting George Soros, lives in mud huts and drinks water out of puddles. Even then the “takers” would scream because people were dying of starvation rather than contributing equally in the just society of mud hut dwellers.
My eons from now, a pilgrim will happen upon this planet and our future relations will have consumed but not produced themselves to extinction. After extensive archialogical investigation, they will discover what happened. Socialism, and they will flee in all haste lest they catch that dred disease.

You own our property, shipped away our jobs, and shredded our unions. You’ve profited off of disaster, destabilized our currencies, and raised our cost of living. You’ve monopolized our freedom, stripped away our education, and have almost extinguished our flame. We are hit… we are bleeding… but we ain’t got time to bleed. “* Refrain from Shopping Day. Show the value of educators and other public employees and the economic contribution they make to local communities by refraining from shopping one day.”

Public sector educators are only as valuable as they are because they control such a large portion of the good perception that comes with accreditation. Yet another reason to shut down the Department of Education.

A possible counter-protest would be for businesses to begin to REQUIRE private school degrees or pre-employment on-site testing, thus making public school degrees worthless.

Government does not exist to provide people with jobs; Government exists to secure the citizens’ individual right to the freedom to create wealth for himself and to trade with everyone else in the private sector.

They know that the tea party is huge and growing everyday, and that dems, repubs, and many independents are realizing that the damage to this once great nation can be directly attributed to people like these. The entitled class needs to be crushed by the great hand of personal liberty. It will be done, believe it!

Wouldn’t it be really cool if these idiots went from location to location to protest & each time they show up they’re greeted with warning shots, then arrests? Make the arrests stick & cost them a fortune plus a few days pay. Knowing California, The whole state will get involved.
Not sorry I moved to the South.

Sounds like a Vast Left Wing Conspiracy to me! And, all joking aside, a conspiracy to break multiple laws and endanger the public as well as specific legislators.

These people are thugs and lawbreakers and revolutionaries and somebody, in a police uniform, needs to hand out some beat downs.

I don’t think any of us have any idea to what level the intimidation has the potential to reach. I was living in Argentina during the 2001 economic collapse, I saw oceans of people surrounding banks in desperation as their money was devalued nearly 300% seemingly overnight. I mingled with the riotous crowds pilling up walls of old tires across main highways then lighting them on fire to shut down the system. During one of these riots I stood 10 yards away from a man that threw a cinder block through the windshield of a citizens car, I asked him why he did it? He told me he just got paid $50 (american dollars) to do it, and that his family needs to eat. (also worth mentioning this man was grossly overweight and had wine stains on his shirt) This MANUFACTURED CHAOS is a tactic that has been REHEARSED many times all over the world.

Then came the presidential musical chairs with 15 different candidates (if i recall correctly) taking the presidents seat for a day or two then resigning all within the same month. 6 months later I was in a different city, one that was supposed to be safer for an American like myself to be living. I recall walking behind a Toledo super market (could be compared to our Walmart… large, profitable, sell everything you need all in one place) in broad day light, as “the people” tried to storm the super market and take back “what had been stolen from them.” I heard screaming, yelling, chanting (which is what encouraged me to walk around the back of the store. Then the police, who had somehow been informed of the planned attack, released tear gas canisters and I heard lots of gunfire (I later heard they were all rubber bullets). I remember sprinting the 3 miles to my apartment with my friend, I had previously learned my lesson mingling with crowds by then and knew I was not safe. I will never forget the panic I felt… I will never forget the tears I shed and emotions I felt after I locked the dead bolt to my apartment…

Treason is still a hangable offense in the U.S. Any public union executive board member, president, or V.P should be charged with treason. All public sector union leaders should be arrested and held without bail until trial. All union property should be seized by the government. All union locals abolished. All public sector union memners will be fingerprinted and required to give a d.n.a. sample to the government. All union contracts will be null and void. Unionized police departments will be disbanded and private security guards will be tasked with policing cities. All union prison guards will be furloughed and the penetentiary system will be privatized. It will be expressly forbidden for any public sector worker to organize or attend a union meeting…………….. Everybody has seen the union protests in several states. We’ve seen children used as human shields in case violence breaks out. Using children is cowardly and could lead to injury or worse if it continues. We need to stop these unions for the sake of the children.

One just has to wonder why they are afraid of having a special election about the tax issue. Can it be that they afraid that a majority of the people might not be on their side? I thought the idea of a union was to insure fairness for all! Oh, I forgot. The unions won’t even allow their members to vote for union local officers. They are appointed by the union leaders. Where is the democracy they continually brag about?

this chaos has already started. remember the dem’s never let a situation go to waste, isn’t that what the white house says. with them not allowing parents to pack their own kids lunch, what about the district that is purchasing all kindergarten kids an IPod, what about this having students and their parents picket outside of the schools, or have students camping in front of the schools, have a crisis drill instead of an earthquake drill, and what is this about homeless encampments. i’m sure the list goes on of situations where the school district “knows better than the parents”.

they are using our children right now. i think it would be a good time to visit our kids school and be a guest in the classroom. i think it is a very good time to write letters to the editors and get the word out of what they are planning to do, to your neighbors. attend and speak at school board meetings or at least pack the halls. the silent majority is very well heard.

Everyone who has a child in the California school districts should threaten to take their children out of school for 1 or more of those days that they play this game. THE SCHOOLS do not get paid when kids are not at school. Send copies of this propaganda with a note saying “You wanna play?” Game On. OR, If your school, or district participates in this crap, you will pull your kid from the school or district. I will chose how my child is used to fight this BS, not you Union Thugs! I would rather take a day or two off of work to educate my child on protesting, then them trying to give credit to my child for attending this anti patriotic, communist, socialist crap. Educate not Intimidate!

Its just plain ignorance. Ninety percent of the people who be attending will be little more than LEMMINGS. They hear the “our kids are going to lose their schools…our seniors will be dying in the streets…” and they BUY IT. So what happens if the extensions happen? Does our budget balance miraculously? NOOOOOO!!! We just make it that much harder for businesses to justify staying in California….that much more difficult for our people to find jobs.

Can any one say misdemeanor or possibly felony, several of the listed actions constitute criminal offenses. Showing the true impact of teachers would require an abject lesson in greed and avarice and most of them are so incompetent that weather it was light or dark it would not matter. A day without teachers is that a personal day or would you be required to take a vacation day,if it were up to me a lot of people would be taking a VERY long vacation.
