Caught on Camera: Free-Range Cow Rams Woman on Bike!

These days there’s often a lot of talk of the benefits of free-range farm animals. But for one Fresno, Calif., woman, the more animal-friendly rearing technique could have turned deadly. A free-range cow charged her while she was cycling, causing her to fly 30 feet down a hill off her bike.
The local ABC affiliate (KFSN) reports that Melanie Spigelmyre was left “battered and bruised, but okay” after the bovine slammed into her over the weekend. Spigelmyre was training for a cross-country bike race and the team photographer happened to catch the action.

KFSN has more:
A 10 person cycling team was riding in the foothills near Trimmer Springs Road in Eastern Fresno County Saturday. Just 10 minutes into the ride, they came upon this herd of free-range cattle.
“As soon as I come around the corner, he just barrels and t-bones me. Sends me about 30 feet down the hill.”
Watch the local report:
Spigelmyre was airlifted to the hospital with no serious injuries identified, except a severe bruise that has her arm in a sling. Her bike — called Orbea Princess — and her helmet got the rougher end of the deal. The bike’s frame splintered and the helmet cracked.

Spiegelmyre told KFSN that she is moving on and it was for a good cause. She and her teammates are riding to raise awareness about organ donation after Crystel Stanford, a 29-year-old cyclist from Calif., died in a bike crash last May but left a legacy, donating eight of her organs.

Um, if was a cow, shouldn’t it be
“SHE just barrels and t-bones me”?
Maybe time for some remedial biology in Fresno schools.

Posted on March 14, 2012 at 10:49amThis is why, when I bicycle, I open carry. Not specifically because of cows, but animals in general, especially the two footed kind.
That said:
1). This is California – no 2nd Amendment rights allowed there
Report Post »2). This is California and the biker is in neon spandex, so there’s a 99.99% chance that the biker is an arrogant loon to begin with.

Posted on March 14, 2012 at 10:58amActually, this was the bikers fault. I was raised on a ranch in the upper Rockies, we had many cows. And when you see them postured to cross a road (potentially, the choice “IS” always theirs) you stop and wait a respectable distance from them. Even today, driving through the dirt roads around here in open range country in my TRUCK, I’ll always defer to any cow (or other critter) near the road.
But, given the choice between a cow and a mountain lion (which also have a history of ‘going after’ people motivating by them) I’d take my chances with the cow.

Posted on March 14, 2012 at 2:34pmRuler4you-I was not raised anywhere near free range cattle. Even I figured after looking at that cow ready to cross the road that the woman ought to have put on her brakes and let the cow go first.

Posted on March 14, 2012 at 4:05pmGee, it appears from the photos that the COW (not the one on the bike, that is) had the right of way since it was in the process of crossing the road before she rounded the curve on her bike.

I do hope the lady will fully recover. And remember you don’t win contests where you run into something that is significantly larger than you are.
Hope organ donations are positively impacted as well. I plan on keeping mine for a while longer, thank you.

Posted on March 15, 2012 at 9:35pmI bet the cyclist was a vegan. Being California, I’m sure the cow will have a civil lawsuit filed on its behalf. I can hear it now,”The cow’s rights and private free range space was infringed upon by this encroaching human female.” In Texas, when a cow gets too ornery, unless its a new mama, we just make room in the freezer.

Posted on March 14, 2012 at 2:53amCity girl! Animals are unpredictable. Cattle might look placid but they can move fast and if you get between them and a hard spot you will get hurt. She should have dismounted and waited for the cow to cross the road. Judging from the camera angle, the photographer came between the attacker and the other three cattle first. Probably not a good idea. Glad the cyclist is moving on. Cows don’t carry collision insurance anyway.

Posted on March 14, 2012 at 9:08amThe bruised arm was not from the cow. It was from some rough use of basic health care that evening. You paid for that and the chopper ride.

Posted on March 14, 2012 at 2:01ami have a question …, where is the cows shadow ?
Report Post »nzkiwi
Posted on March 14, 2012 at 2:19amThe cow‘s shadow is combined with that of the cyclist’s (in the photo at the moment of collision). The shadow is too long to be just that of the cyclist’s. The angle of the camera makes it look a bit thin.
Report Post »Captain Crunch
Posted on March 14, 2012 at 2:33amNO..I can’t stand it..We never went to the moon as proven by incorrect shadows in the photographs, and this cyclist never got hit by that cow. Poor cow lost it’s shadow. lol

Report Post »Homeschoolmama
Posted on March 14, 2012 at 4:53amThat road is too curvey for an 18-wheeler and a mini van would be going slow enough it is unlikely the cow would be injured. This is near where we go camping.
Report Post »USAqh
Posted on March 14, 2012 at 6:58amI think you need to get out of Detroit and see the rest of the world buddy … free range is how cattle have been raised in this country since the beginning … It’s what they do before they go to the feed lots and then your plate …
Report Post »Snidely
Posted on March 14, 2012 at 6:43pmThe cattle get the right-of-way in an open range pasture. Anyone driving (or riding a bicycle) in open range knows that. There aren’t any fences to keep the cattle off of the road. Roads though open range are generally not heavily traveled. That may be why they chose this road to ride their bike on. You still need to use caution around a 1200 lb animal if you are invading its space, though.
By the way, Blaze editors, free range usually means that the animals aren’t confined to a building, but still have fences to keep them off of the road. This is open range, which basically means you’re driving through a pasture.
