Hunter Statement on Navy Decision to Name Ship after Cesar Chavez

Washington D.C.—Today, Congressman Duncan Hunter, a member of the House Armed Services Committee and veteran of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, was notified by the Navy that the last of the 14 Lewis and Clark-class cargo ships under construction in San Diego will be named after Cesar Chavez.

“This decision shows the direction the Navy is heading. Naming a ship after Cesar Chavez goes right along with other recent decisions by the Navy that appear to be more about making a political statement than upholding the Navy’s history and tradition.

“If this decision were about recognizing the Hispanic community’s contribution to our nation, many other names come to mind, including Marine Corps Sergeant Rafael Peralta, who was nominated for the Medal of Honor for action in Iraq. Peralta is one of many Hispanic war heroes—some of whom are worthy of the same recognition.

“And we cannot forget about John Finn, a lifelong San Diego resident who won the Medal of Honor for what he did during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Finn is another worthy candidate that was evidently overlooked in the selection process.”

The “ass kissing”is for the benefit of Obamaos’ reelection. He holds Hispanics in such low esteem that he thinks they’re stupid enough to support him because he names a vessel after someone with an Hispanic surname. Much like the Sotomayer nomination. He‘s losing his base and he’s in panic mode. His party held both houses of congress with super majorities for the first 2 years and he ignored his promises to Hispanic, instead pushing through his health care monstrosity. Now, when it’s too late, he’s pandering to them with meaningless concerns. I’m betting his next move is a white house invitation to Cheech and Chong to honor their contributions to Hispanic culture!

Actually Professional Infidel has a point here. The Navy has been being politicized for years. While there are still many in the Navy who aren’t. Sadly there are plenty of OFFICERS who are. I loved the Navy when I first joined, my first CO was a former enlisted man who became an officer. Great guy who cared about his crew. Second CO who replaced him. Not so much! He was a college educated idiot who happened to be an Admirals son. Just two months after returning from a 6 month Desert Storm deployment this idiot volunteers the ship to go out for 60 days of LEO anti drug ops working with the Coast Guard. Followed immediately by several other short deployments for purely political a$$ kissing, that had the entire crew PO’d. He was the reason I did not re-enlist, two more years under that idiot was a prospect akin to an Obama re-election unthinkable! Not when I had a choice in the matter.

To name any ship after an individual who hated the United States, did not miss an opportunity to criticize its government, repudiated its laws, etc. THAT is a disgrace. Naming the ship however does not reflect the brave men and women who serve to protect our great country. It does reflect how disgustingly corrupt the politicians have become. “You people are deluded. Chavez was born in the U.S. and served in the Navy.”

Truth. He was born in Yuma, Arizona on a family owned farm in 1927 and did serve in the US Navy for a two years at the end of World War II.

He was also strongly anti-illegal immigrant. So much so, in fact, that in 1973 along with the UFW he helped form a 100-mile patrol zone at the Mexican border in Arizona to stop the flow of illegal immigrants across the border. He even worked patrols himself with his son, Manuel Chavez, along what they called “the wet line”. This was due to the illegal immigrants taking jobs away from the farm workers that were citizens or legal residents. You can’t very well unionize illegal immigrants now can you.

There is nothing wrong with Cesar Chavez. He was American born, and concerned first and foremost with farming labor and their treatment as *LEGAL IMMIGRANTS* and he was openly against illegal immigration. Given the time in which he lived, his concerns were valid, just as the concerns of the original unionists in the 1800′s were legitimate (child labor, horrible often fatal working conditions, etc). He was an decent man, and he served proudly in the U.S. Navy, this is a fitting honor.
