California Legislature Passes Nation‘s First Bill Banning Gay ’Conversion Therapy’

California’s state legislature this week passed a first-of-its-kind ban on controversial therapy aimed at turning gay and lesbian youth straight, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

The fate of the legislation banning so-called “conversion” or “reparative therapy” for minors — even if their parents request it — now rests with Gov. Jerry Brown (D). He has not taken a public position on the issue. The legislation passed in the California assembly on Tuesday and a final version was approved by the state Senate Thursday.

If signed, the law would apply only to licensed psychologists and professional therapists, not counseling offered by religious groups, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Supporters of the measure say conversion therapy is ineffective and can contribute to depression and even suicide among LGBT youth.

“These attempts are quackery and this kind of psychological abuse of children must stop,” said state Sen. Ted Lieu (D), the bill’s author.

Several openly gay lawmakers cited their own personal experiences while championing the bill during a floor debate, Reuters reported.

“One of our No. 1 priorities in this house is to protect the next generation of Californians,” Assemblyman Ricardo Lara (D) said. “And some of those are sissy boys. And some of those sissy boys grow up to be assembly members. And some of those sissy boys need help. And we are here to stand with those sissy boys.”

The National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality has vowed to challenge the legislation in court if Brown signs it into law, calling it a “dangerous trend toward limiting the right of families to seek mental health care for some aspects of their children’s lives.”

Chad Griffin, president of the Human Rights Campaign, sent a letter to Brown urging him to sign the legislation.

“Your support for SB1172 would send a strong message to LGBT youth everywhere that their lives are valuable and they are perfect just the way they are,” Griffin wrote, according to the Chronicle.

Brown has until Sept. 30 to sign the bill, veto it or allow it to take effect without his signature on Jan. 1.

What we are seeing is a sense of possession from self appointed leaders. Their Gay so keep them within the support structure we have built for them. The same mind set is found within the deaf community with their disapproval of Technology that helps the non-hearing hear. This sense of possession I think is no friend to those within the group.

Whether or not they CAN change is immaterial–the question that is more important is why SHOULD they change, just to satisfy the, granted popular here, prejudicial preconceptions of an archaic myth? It is Christian theology that has failed to justify its moral judgments with anything other than an empty and conclusory appeal to authority. If we rational people are to accept what they claim, that a certain behavior is immoral and to be proscribed, then the burden of proof rests upon them to persuade as as to WHY we should accept their proposition and reject alternative conclusions, particularly in light of the grave moral judgment that it entails passing upon up to 1/10th of the human populace. If we are to say that around 1/10th of the human race is morally at fault for its sexual attractions, then we’d better have a DAMN COMPELLING REASON given for doing so, and at no point in history have Christians offered us anything coming close to compelling rationale. All they have given us on the subject is ignorant emotional prejudice, reinforcing preexisting stereotypes, but never justifying the existence of those stereotypes in the first place.

You are welcome to you religious beliefs, logically unjustified though they are, but for those who place a premium on logical validity, we are under no obligation, indeed we have a duty to reject insufficient ratiocination, to respect or accept your claims prima facie when no legitimate reason for doing so has been offered.

Left-handedness is a sin, and I believe parents have a right to correct that sinful behavior. According to the bible, left handed people are fools Ecclesiastes 10:2 “A wise man’s heart is at his right hand; but a fool’s heart at his left.” Where is the justified christian outrage? Why are we not doing more to correct this sinful behavior of left-handedness? Parents should have the right to cut off their children’s left hand if it has to come to that.

      Wurlitzer28

Robert Spitzer was one of the psychiatrists, who was one of those that delisted homosexuality as a mental disorder in 1973.

He conducted a study on conversion therapy because he was asked to. All of his subjects were gays who volunteered (i.e. he did not put them under duress). He used the tools of psychology that he had been using all along.

His conclusion was that since among volunteers, who did not want to be gay it was very hard to stop being gay, that conversion therapy success was extremely rare (let’s say less than 5%) or less than 1%).

For this sin the LGBT lobby went to General Quarters & the APA went to red alert. they pilloried him in the press. They probably threatened to de-credential him & not invite him to any APA gatherings.
The MSM does not tell us the truth now. If Spitzer got death threats, would they tell us?

So Spitzer recanted. No APA did wants to replicate the experiment or tell us what was wrong with it. All this retards the advancement of psychology as a science.

Remember Hitler had a 100 scientists saying that Einstein’s theories were wrong. There was a consensus against Einstein. Well the APA like Hitler can’t be wrong. They have a consensus.

So if Dora spews, believe her or him or it or whatever it is.

We are only now coming out of the quagmire that he created. His mathematical theories are akin to the flat earth theory: they only work when you see a tiny portion of the nature of the Universe, otherwise they completely fall apart. Particle (quantum) physics is proving that every day, so Hitler and his scientists were right.

@ Third Archon: Whether or not they can change is very material to the current article and discussion. For someone who seems to value logic as much as you seem to this should be obvious, you freaking Vulcan. Instead you make charges against Christianity saying that it is illogical and has no legitimate argument that homosexuals should change. That statement can’t possibly be rebutted in the limited space of this thread. It shows that you really have no knowledge of what Christian philosophy has said about God’s existence or why homosexuals should change. Furthermore, by your use of logic we should probably be ok with incest and beastiality as well because we Christians haven‘t met your standard of logical reasoning for why a person shouldn’t do these things. Here is the beginning of a logical argument for why a homosexual should want to change: To say something is “natural” or “unnatural” in the moral sense is a commentary on natural function, not natural behavior (behavior that we observe in the natural world). An argument against homosexuality on the grounds that it is unnatural, then, is an argument based on natural law, not the great outdoors. Homosexuality is unnatural, not because it is absent from the natural world, but because it repudiates the natural purpose of our sexuality in favor of a self-made purpose.
You can take that as a start for one of many arguments that are out there, try doing some research. There, now you can’t say we have no logical argum

      @ The Third Archon
Most sins do indeed have a tangible, physical consequence that can be seen if one does not ignore the truth. Homosexual acts are highly risky health-wise. No doctor, no matter how much he might agree or disagree with the practice, can deny that homosexual practices are unnatural to the human body, and put persons practicing such acts at unnecessary risk.

That is just the physical consequences. The psychological ones are harder to pin down. Currently, LGBT “awareness” groups are trying to advocate that the high substance abuse typical of homosexuals is because of “homophobia.” Apparently, this is even a world-wide phenomena. But is it really “homophobia” that is the cause, or that deep inside, the person knows that something is wrong with them? Feelings of shame are not exclusive to homosexuals, nor is destructive behavior. Lifting shame from destructive behavior serves about the same purpose as removing pain from a bleeding cut. You will still bleed to death.

“If we rational people… etc,” If we were rational people, we would consider all possibilities rather than come to a certain conclusion simply out of rebellion. Rationally, homosexual practices are dangerous and unhealthy. Rationally, we wouldn’t encourage such a practice as a norm, especially when we don’t know if it is safe. Denial of the obvious does not negate the real facts. That is, all sexual immorality is a drain on the individual, the public, and resources.

@ TTA….The LGTB community has a very vested interest in seeing these types of treatment centers shut down. First of all it suggest homosexuality, as it used to be considered in psychiatry, is a condition that needs to be corrected or treated. Secondly, it would argue against the montra we always hear about being born homosexual. Finally, it would undermine the idea that it is OK to be gay. Again, there is no “gay” gene. There are some very well designed studies of monozygotic twins that demonstrate that the “gay” gene does not exist or if it does it is so inconsequential and easily overcome by environment as to be insignificant in the development of sexuality. As far as Christians producing reasons why homosexuality is wrong is really a question that puts the cart before the horse. First, the logical question is, Does the Christian God (Creator and Moral Judge of humanity) exist? If so what does he say regarding homosexuality if anything. Of course, I have argued for a while that the evidence is extensive for God‘s existence and although many today want to twist scripture to fit their lifestyles and justify their behaviors God’s word is clear that homosexuality is a sin before God. Until you come to the place of lQQking at the evidence for God’s existence and why the bible is His communication to humanity you will never accept the harmful lifestyle of homosexuality as an immoral way of living….Again it is the battle of 2 worldviews we see at war…thank y

To give parents the green light to shove their kids into some kind of indoctrination counseling every time their wrist goes limp is downright cruel and cowardly. Set a heterosexual precedent for them to follow and if they still turn out gay, oh well, you did your job. They made their own choice.

Actually quite a few gay men are body builders. I suspect some are body builders for the same reason the body guard character in the film “Victor Victoria” gave. Other body build so they can pick up other guys & be a TOP. A top is a new term I learned this year. Reading about tops & bottoms, obsession with packages & seeing pictures of gay couples, I have learned & re-learned that gays a psychiatric basket cases. Sure gays can be high functioning individuals just like some drunks can be deceptively high function individuals for long periods of time.
Getting back couples, did you look at Dan Savage & his girlfriend. If you told me that they both worked out & would believe it. If you told me that Dan took steroids or worked out more & that his girlfriend did not, I would not be shocked. Why would Dans’ girlfriend not try to be all he could be in the athletic realm? Because if he bulked up more than Dan there would be problems? So how healthy is the gay lifestyle choice?
I disrespect silicone b00bs & steroid built muscles. I can see why a person would be sorely tempted to use steroids. With all the pecking order BS that humanity hasn’t shed & the gay community is not immune.
Recently (about 4 mo. ago) one of those body building gays died. His body couldn’t take all the steroids & club drugs. He was in his mid 30s. Joe Jeebus posted an article on him in blogspot.com. I think many go into fitness overdrive after being picked on or to make it in the gay pe

Frowned upon to therapeutically treat a mental condition or choice (not something one is born with) but smiled upon to abort babies. Stepping back this looks more like population control by encouraging homosexual behaviour and infanticide. I believe you could call this Orwellian.

Those are all real procedures. The day someone invents a way to slice somebody open and remove the “gayness” is when those comparisons will be relevant. Trying to convince a queer that they are not gay is like trying to persuade a vegan that beef is better for you. Makes sense to you and me but, to them, you’re wasting your time.

They are modeling human brains now. When they have dozens to experiment with, psychology will become a hard science. Where will the instructors teaching queer theory run?

If you are religious or spiritual or whatever you call it then there will always be wiggle room as to people choosing to do things or not do things.

I would say it is mostly caused by the environment. People who want to change should be able to find psychiatrists in their state who are willing to help them.

The LGBT lobby is evil. How do I justify that statement? The LGBT lobby does not want fewer gays just like the Deaf community does not want fewer deaf people. The Deaf community have gone to court tom prevent parents form obtaining surgery to correct their kid’s hearing problem. They reason that if too many parents opt for such surgery, then the Deaf culture/community will die out. The gays are the same way. Therefore, the gay lobby is evil.

I don’t quote the Bible. I find it full of wisdom, but the gay lobby has a playbook on it. They like nothing better than to ridicule & lampoon anyone who quotes the bible. When I posted on Fox News, I found that gay activists. would reply to anyone quoting the bible, but usually were slow to reply to anyone who quoted research. Some would & would acquit themselves somewhat well, but most fled in terror.

I agree, these type of clinics would do more harm than good. Until a gay person turns fully to God and accept Jesus as their savior no amount of therapy will change anything. Their feelings are in their heart, until they change what is in their heart, they will remain with their abnormal feelings.
