Calif. Mayor Chooses Occupy Rally Over Veterans Day Memorial

The mayor of Richmond, Calif. plans to skip her city’s Veterans Day memorial events to attend an Occupy rally, a choice that’s prompting anger and criticism.
Mayor Gayle McLaughlin will miss a Veterans Day salute Friday in favor of an Occupy Richmond “public speak out,” the San Jose Mercury News reported.
McLaughlin defended her decision, telling the newspaper that the city is not sponsoring the Veterans Day event, and the rally she will attend will honor Scott Olsen, the Iraq war veteran injured at an Occupy Oakland rally last month. Richmond and Oakland, both in the San Francisco Bay Area, are about 12 miles apart.
“I choose to honor our veterans, not only on Veteran’s Day, but daily, by supporting an end to military warfare to prevent further fighting and dying in needless wars,” she said in an email. “I am a strong supporter of Veterans for Peace and Iraq Vets Against the War.”
McLaughlin, a member of the Green Party elected to a second term last year, has been supportive of the Occupy Wall Street movement since its inception. In a message on her website dated Nov. 6, she said since it “burst onto the scene, calling for an end to corporate domination all over the globe…[w]e, in Richmond, are part of this movement and have everything to gain from it.”
Her website also notes former White House “green jobs czar” Van Jones spoke at her 2010 re-election campaign kickoff.
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, she marched in Occupy Oakland’s “general strike” earlier this month — the same march that turned into violent rioting. Asked whether she would support Friday’s protesters if they decide to stay and camp after their rally, she told the Chronicle: “Yeah, I would stand with them for that. I stand with this movement.”
A message on her website urged Richmond residents to attend the Occupy rally as well, scheduled for 11 a.m. — the same time as the Veterans Day events.
Jeff Rubin, a Veterans Day memorial organizer, told the San Jose Mercury News the mayor has “very little respect for the country and traditions” and wondered whether the date of the rally was picked on purpose — a decision McLaughlin said had nothing to do with.
“As mayor, she has a responsibility to everyone in our community,” Rubin said. “Not only the disenfranchised and the unemployed, but to the veterans as well.”
Michael Klasno, director of Gold Star Dads of America, called the mayor’s choice a “slap in the face” to veterans and to grieving parents like himself.
“You don’t blow off the veterans of the United States for anybody, and you certainly don’t blow if off for Occupy Wall Street,” he said. “As somebody who’s paid the ultimate sacrifice, that to me is beyond the pale.”
But McLaughlin countered that exercising freedom is respectful of veterans.
“I think a good way to show respect for our veterans is to put all our energy into promoting the values that veterans fought for and some of them died for,” she said.

Not to forget to say that I had also 3 brothers in Vietnam at the same time and one returned home in a box. God rest his soul also. I served in the military for 22 years, my husband served in the military for 33 years. All seems for nothing now. I pray to God it isn’t but my fear is so real. Report Post »I have to agree with you About Western Oregon, its too far gone but Washington state is mostly conservative Except for the Seattle and Vancouver areas.The problem is The city’s have such a large population from California that they dominate all politics in this state and we keep getting subjected to the tyranny of the majority. Whats really stupid is they keep forcing Seattle land use laws on the rural areas. There is a movement for the east side to form their own state but personally I’d like to see them just kick king county out since they are the ones screwing things up and rigging all the elections.

It‘s like a slap in the face to the Veteran’s of WWI, WW2 and Viet Nam for her to honor one Vet from Iraq who was wounded in the OWS rally. Apparently she hasn’t seen the video I just watched that showed a man ADMITTING he is a COMMUNIST, and who said nothing positive will be done until we “get rid of America”. I can’t imagine anyone wanting to associate themselves with a group that has people like that in it. It‘s not the country’s fault people don‘t know who to vote for or that we can’t get politicians in office that would not bow down to corporations or special interest groups”. Next, they’ll want to give preferential treatment over heterosexual veterans in favor of homosexual veterans under the guise of “tolerance”. Then it’ll be ethnic veterans over Caucasian veterans, then gay ethnic veterans, then disabled, gay, ethnic veterans……….etc.

I think even you might accept that patriotism is love of country. But, what is our country? This will come as a surprise, but veterans don’t define or, better said, distinguish our country; neither does any other group of people. Anyone who has lived outside the U.S. can tell you that there are great people and vets wherever you go.
Our country is defined or distinguished by our constitution. THAT‘S what’s great about America; and the freedom the constitution protects from the pernicious hands of your heroes in government. And under the equal protection clause of the constitution, we don’t favor one individual above another. And as has been mentioned, the vets don’t need it; neither do blacks, women or any other minority. It’s your view of these people as “less than” that needs adjusting.
It’s so ironic that the very principles you seek to tear down are what have created what keeps you here- other people’s money. All of that American wealth will cease being created if you get your way. It’s freedom that allows people to try and rewards their efforts. Life isn’t fair. Some people are better at some things than others are. But everyone’s life is bettered by the efforts of the greatest among us. Witness our unmatched standard of living, in the history of man.

Without absolute morals, given by God, there is no reason not to behave like animals (oh hey, that’s what they try to teach our kids, that we are real smart monkeys)… well, when people start acting like animals, those who cry and whine will be the first to be DOMINATED by Bigger, Stronger, Faster, and Smarter Beasts. Then they will cry and beg for mercy and plead your sense of honor, dignity, they will cry that it’s wrong to kill (unless it’s them doing the killing), they will cry it’s wrong to steal (unless it’s them doing the stealing)…etc.. and then they will get to go back to the dust from which they came, only when the lead passes through their grey matter, they won’t feel pain, they will stand up and greet the demons coming for their soul and be taken to the black darkness (absence of all God’s love and light) and they will immersed in the cries of anguish and pain………….forever.

Someone keeps saying educate yourself about where the Libs are. Problem, in the whole state, the Libs seem to outvote you on every thing, so what good does it do to have the majority, but get outvoted everytime? Would never move back to California the way it’s been for the last decade or so..
If you’re retired or have an at home business, it might be great to live away from the bad areas. But most are still drawn to the big cities for jobs. The younger ones are more drawn to liberalism.

Vote to give California back to Messico? If anything, at least let us truly become a California Republic, your highness. We would do much better without the federal government and their union thugs dictating what happens here.

However, there are a few of us out here in the land of fruits and nuts who still have a grasp on reality. We’re holding on by our finger nails. CA is on the brink of forever becoming a socialist state.
With Jerry Brown now running the show combined with a very progressive/liberal legislature, they can now move their agenda forward with little resistance. I was born and raised in So. Cal., but I cannot believe what has become of this beautiful place.

When I came home and was asked to remove my uniform and put on civies so as not to draw attention to myself as I left the airport, well, thats when I became demoralized. We have a population of over 35 million people, and have over 400 cities in California.
