Caliphate 2.0? Al Qaeda Operatives Joining Syrian Rebel Force

While Syrian President/Dictator Bashar al-Assad fights for his political and military control over Syria, the supposedly heroic rebels against his repressive regime have made some…questionable friends. The Washington Post reports that James D. Clapper, U.S. Director of National Intelligence, has been noting the presence of Al Qaeda operatives within the Syrian rebel ranks:
Two bombings in Damascus in December, as well as deadly attacks on security and intelligence buildings in Aleppo last week, “had all the earmarks of an al-Qaeda-like attack,” Clapper said, adding that the network’s affiliate in Iraq “is extending its reach into Syria.”
But Clapper suggested that al-Qaeda has so far not sought to call attention to its presence, and that its operatives may have slipped into groups of fighters opposed to the government of President Bashar al-Assad.
How the United States will react to this news is not immediately clear, as enemies of the U.S. exist on both sides of the Syrian conflict. Moreover, several U.S. allies have officially withdrawn recognition from the Syrian President’s regime, while trading partners like Russia and China have been supportive of the regime. The fact that Al Qaeda operatives are apparently operating within the rebellion without the knowledge of the rebels also complicates things.
If Al Qaeda does gain a foothold in Syria, however, it will be well-positioned to forge an alliance with the Iranian government. As this website has reported, Al Qaeda’s main contact in Iran – Yasin al Suri – is himself from Syria. Ayman al Zawahiri, Al Qaeda’s effective leader, also recorded a video message calling on Jihadists in Syria to overturn Bashar Assad’s “secular regime.”

It;s been done so many times before what’s to stop it from happening again. Heck, the kind of control those two want is going on in countries today. We have has it too good for too long and too few know or care about history enough to realize what has happened before can happen again. No one realizes a proxy war can spin out of control.

Posted on February 19, 2012 at 1:42amRoe Smellin……the Muslim Brotherhood was founded by a member of the “Young Turks” in Turkey around 1925. They are not a “civil rights” organization and they never were. Thier main goal is to advance the footprint of Islam throughout the middle east region (forst and foremost) and then to try and spread that across the globe (of they can manage it). The way Turkey is going now (along with Egypt) is very troubling indeed since they both are signalling to the West that they are in the process of transforming secular nationhood to an Islamic led theocracy, and ultimately a Caliphate in the region (likely headed up by Turkey or Cairo).
Your entire perception the changes is way way off base and is filled with outrright errors and lies. My only conclusion for your continued presence here is one of spreading mis information and propaganda for whomever you work for. You are not fooling any of us you know.

European zionism and western unjust colonialist policies created divisions among jewish and christian and muslim arabs-prior to that they were all arabs living in peace with separate courts for their separate religions. When these dictators are toppled there may be a period of adjustment but religious tolerance wil prevailas it did prior to colonialism. of course unjust zionist occupation is a big problem [israel could resolve that by return to 67borders which all arabs would accept including hamas and hezbollah] but israel insists on keeping illigal land and will not tolerate a muslim or christian majority israel-that is racism pure and simple.

Posted on February 18, 2012 at 2:04pmNot on my watch Rose-Ellen. Peace before the colonialist issues? Right…you may need to take a look back at some T.E. Lawrence and read between the lines. Tribal warfare, religious violence and intolerance all happened on a smaller scale, only due to the lack of technology and organized states was it on a smaller scale. I agree the dictators will be toppled, but your ‘idea’ of peace after the dictators leave is insane. Saddam left, then WE left…what do we have in one of the somewhat MODERN and AFFLUENT countries in the middle east? Warfare, violence and intolerance…great change there, and we dumped MILLIONS…oh wait BILLIONS into that country…You delude yourself with your visions of world peace and tranquility are flawed and overly optimistic. Mankind cannot live without conflict. There is always the next threat to freedom, whether you are too lazy to deal with it or want to turn a blind eye is your own issue. Those of us that recognize that will make up for those, like you, who think people will live in peace if left alone. I hope your cave is comfy, I think you should stay there and keep out of our way.

They are muslims engaged in Jihad. Sure there may be a few tools of socialism and a small cadre of stooges for Soros and his minions, but for the most part this is normal for Islamic culture. The rulers of this muslim nation are considered apostates in that they did not kill enough for Allah. Of course, the more devout muslims will need to kill them for their apostasy.
As I mused a few months ago, we are seeing a new policy towards the Middle East. America no longer cares what happens to The House of Islam or the people that dwell within it. As long as we get the resources needed to drive our civilization, we do not care if muslims want to kill each other by the millions.
We will retain functional control, but we are done attempting to re-introduce Western Civilization to these lost people. A higher power will have to look after them for now.

We’re the ones who because of our selfish policies where the plight of the people under dictatorship was less important then ou cheap oil.cold war and zionist interests. we’re guilty of morally indefensible violation of our stated principles of human rights .Alquada reacted as liberators in showing us there could be a price to pay for unjust meddling against the people.Yes they musdered civilians but so do we when in our interests and when we hid behind murdering dictators for our interests. You’re on the wrong side of history-not the arab/muslims and not even alquada[bin laden supported the uprisings in egypt].he was a freedom fighter and one day he‘ll be recognized as the one who launced the people’s century. And like he said in launcing the 9-11 attacks what mc cain said dropping bombs on the villages of viet nam-aw shucks war is hell.

Assad or the others, they are all the same…I say let them fight it out on their own, winner takes all. Isreal is more than capable (with Gods help, as are we) of dealing with them, and have proved it in the recent past. We wait for them (Extreme Muslims) to show their true colors here in America , they are here hiding, enjoying our freedoms for awhile before they get up their courage. It’s hard to fight an ememy that uses planes, bombvests, and the like, but sooner or later, they will get bolder. But for that to happen, they’ve got to grow a spine and stand up face to face for what they believe in, whatever that might be. It doesn’t take much courage to blow yourself up, poof!, I’m done! Where’s the virgins? Easy way out. Takes real courage to cover a grenade to save 4 or 5 others from harm, that’s real courage. Of coarse most morons don’t see the different between the two, but that’s what makes them morons. Until then, this is how we do it, we wait patiently for them to gather the courage to attack us here with real intent. Don’t hit just here and there, little bit by little bit…be proud extreme Muslims, stand up for what you truely want & believe in!….It makes for a much better target…Thanks in advance!

The complete isolationist policies may have worked when it took DAYS to get from one country to another. It now takes hours. We can‘t be ’alone and unafraid,’ contrary to what some are running on. Rep. Paul has excellent fiscal policy, with some needed realism tweaks. His foreign policy would undermine any sort of good will left in this world. Who fills the void? Someone better? Who? China? A resurgent Russia (unlikely)? I can’t think of a greater country in the world to have the most influence in it…

Posted on February 17, 2012 at 10:27pmActually, in the context of the story, Al Qaeda working with the Syrians is an important lesson on why we shouldn’t go blindly supporting revolutions or dictators. Both are more than happy to stab you in the back as soon as your usefulness to their cause has come to an end.

Posted on February 17, 2012 at 10:58pmExactly Lord Frostwind. I don’t advocate such things either, but we have to be involved and/or aware of the situations and do what we must to preserve the safety and security of our nation, short and long term.

Im a conservative libertarian who will and has voted republican but not always.
As far as the radical muslim threat, im my humble opinion is a farce. We were attacked on 911 because we have had a continuse policy of meddeling in other countries affairs. And for that we went to war in Iraq and proved the attackers point. Our military is overstretched and the nation is going broke. Us conservatives need to get back to our roots and realize that nation building is not good for anyone. Let the crazies over there take care of themselves and lets stay the hell outta there. Some blazers are itching to tell you that there will be another holocaust for the jewish people unless we bomb Iran. Its laughable. The good people of Isreal need to bomb Iran on her own. She does not need us. I am a christian. But I will not put the people of Isreal above me our my family and future generations of Americans. I will put them right at my side. We can be there thru trade and even financial needs when they our needed. But I will not send my kids off to fight a war that we have no business in. We dont need another USS Liberty where the Israeli government said that Egypt bombed one of our ships but it was a false flag op to get us in the war. I will do everything I can and speak out when I can to stop it.

Posted on February 18, 2012 at 1:45amENDTHEFEDNOW, you say you are a Christian. That is a good thing. Here is one for you to mull over. Barack Hussein Obama is a Muslim and not one of the moderate kind. There is not only a plethora of evidence to this effect, but he spoke it out of his own mouth, and it was no accident. The Elitists think they have Barack Hussein Obama rapped around their little finger. Unbeknownst to them, Barack Hussein Obama has them eating out of his hand.

Posted on February 18, 2012 at 2:25pmPLEASE give me your basis for the isolationist view. I mean, besides the Paul-bot propaganda you read. Look at history and our current situation, then combine them and do some constructive analysis. Your ‘opinion’ is based on nothing but what you have been fed. Visit some of these places, then visit Europe to see how they are ‘dealing’ with extremists and see if it is healthy and working. Go to Africa and watch the extremism tear through that country, leaving families and the countryside destroyed. Then live with yourself as we sit by under your favorite politicians policies to let China, India and Russia pillage those countries for resources while have NO ONE to stand up for them. I hope your conscience would kick in at some point.

Report Post »Assad sponsors Hezbollah, witch has launched repeated attacks against Israel. Also, remember when Assad paid people to rush the Israeli border just to distract everyone from his actions against his own people? Assad never signed a peace treaty with Israel. He hates Israel and wishes to destroy it and has allied with Iran for that very purpose.
