Campaign Gaffe? Romney Camp Suggests Candidate Will Change Positions ‘Like An Etch A Sketch’ Come Fall

Romney Spokesman Says Candidate Will Shake Positions Like An Etch A Sketch in the General Election

With advisers like this, it’s hard to wonder why Mitt Romney keeps tripping up with gaffes like these.

Following a win in the Illinois GOP primary Tuesday and a key endorsement from former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, Mitt Romney’s top adviser Eric Fehrnstrom appeared on CNN where he answered questions concerning whether his candidate had gone “so far right” in the primary campaign.

“Well, I think you hit a reset button for the fall campaign,” Fehrnstrom said. “Everything changes. It’s almost like an Etch a Sketch. You can kind of shake it up and we start all over again.”

Fehrnstrom’s answer is likely to rehash concerns from many critics within the conservative base and general electorate who have long alleged that Romney is a “flip-flopper“ and has ”no core values.”

The campaign of Romney’s strongest rival Rick Santorum has immediately pounced on the gaffe.

“We all knew Mitt Romney didn’t have any core convictions, but we appreciate his staff going on national television to affirm that point for anyone who had any doubts,” Santorum’s National Communications Director Hogan Gidley said in a statement.

“With the two year anniversary of the signing of ObamaCare upon us, can voters really believe that the man who urged the President to use his healthcare plan in Massachusetts as a model would really repealObamaCare?  Or is that promise just something they would ‘shake up and restart’ with when Romney hits the general election.”

Top Obama campaign adviser David Axelrod retweeted the video with the message: “Forget everything you know. Forget everything you’ve seen. Coming soon. Mitt 5.0!”

Even if that’s not what Fehrnstrom meant, it’s still easy to see how many will take it that way. And sometimes all it takes is perception to perpetuate a myth or sink a campaign.

The aide never said anything about changing positions, the question wasn’t about changing positions it was about the independent vote. Here is the whole interview and guess what, Glenn Beck’s Will Cain is part of the panel, he will back this up: http://www.thedailycandidate.com/video/2012/mar/romney_aid_etchsketch.html

The etch-a-sketch analysis will be on the change in message and rhetoric. Contraception won’t be a hot topic, it will be more based on the economy. This is the same thing Santorum and Gingrich would have to do to gain the Indies vote as well.

THIS IS B.S. MEDIA SPIN. TALK TO WILL CAIN AND SEE WHAT HE SAYS…

romney will become more moderate for the general election. THIS IS THE MOST CONSERVATIVE MITT ROMNEY WILL EVER BE. That is the way it always works – the republican will be conservative in the primary and then move to the left for the general election. It is history, facts, demographics – you cannot refute it.

in the case of romney, he is not or barely conservative in the primary – not a good sign for the general election

Each one of them is frauds, but that‘s what we’ve allowed to happen. It’s our fault. We are going to deserve Romney or Obama. Maybe it’ll help for the 2016 election for people to get their heads outta their asses in terms of viable candidates; but, I doubt it. We‘ll continue to nominate slugs because we think that’s the “smart” thing to do and why? Because the talking heads say so.

Romney said he has some ‘conservative views’ he never said he was a progressive. This is just like when Santorum called himself a Progressive Conservative or Gingrich praised the progressive movement.

Don’t believe me, believe the truth. Trust but verify, Romney’s record shows he is a conservative. Ask Glenn Beck to ask Will Cain about this interview, he was on the panel.

Also remember, if Gingrich or Santorum won the election, they too would have to change their talking points and rhetoric, instead of talking about faith and abortion they would center around economy and defense. What is wrong with this as long as they don‘t change their position and Romney’s aide never said that was the plan, just their message.

THE TRUE TEST IS TO SEE IF HE CHANGES HIS POSITION OR HIS MESSAGE.

The adviser was talking about message, you can’t just jump around in position, but you can change the message to talk about what Independents are worried about and that is Economy, Foreign Affairs, National Security. Change the message not the position, this is what Reagan did, Santorum and Gingrich would do when they won the primary. not to change positions but what you concentrate on in your message.

ROMNEY IS A CONSERVATIVE, WHETHER YOU BELIEVE THE MEDIA OR LOOK AT HIS CONSERVATIVE RECORD.

As I read all the post here I can see one underling theme.
We seem to have a division that has no solution!
I hear the Ron P. people lament the greatness of their choice but ignore his obvious lack of appeal.
Then we have Rick S. who seems to be too young too stupid & too egotistical.
As for Mitt R. he has a lot of liberal baggage that I do not like and health care repeal is a biggie to me!
Nute G. Does not seem to be catching on and his past association with Nancy P, doesn’t help!
So what’s a voter too do?
They seem to have us cornered because they have us convinced that a third party vote would throw it to NObama.
But I would make one observation.
The reason for the Ross P. loss in his 3rd party bid was on purpose!
He was not running to win he was a spoiler!
He was getting too many votes and if he would have really been a serious candidate instead of a shill things would have turned out differently.
He played his part too well and was about to get elected and to sabotage his own campaign to keep from winning.
The morrow of this lesson is that a real 3rd party candidate can get elected!
I wrote this song out of frustration form our system of elections!

Are you guys all 18-21 years old and voting for a president the first time? You sound like it. There are certain rules in presidential politics that have been around long before we were all born. The first rule of presidential campaigns is play to the base to secure them during the primary, then moderate your message in the fall to attract a wider group of voters. Nixon did it. Reagan did it. Bush did it. And, magically, it works for both parties. Carter did it. Clinton did it. Obama did it.

And, guess what? If Santorum were to win the nomination, even he would do it. You see, Rick would need to widen his appeal beyond his base in Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana if he were to have any chance of winning the general election. There’s just not enough people in those three states to win the day for him.

I know you’re all excited because you think your boy Santorum has found a hole in the line to burst through for a TD, but like Santorum backers have always done – you’re fooling yourself. He’s still a goof with no chance of ever sitting in the oval office. And Karen is still banned from visiting The Villages.

      teapartyforromney (and everyone else)

don’t believe me, just watch the video…

      http://slatest.slate.com/posts/2011/12/13/romney_2002_video_my_views_are_progressive_.html

Romney says “my views are progressive” at around :54 sec

he doesn‘t say conservative as you falsely claim and he doesn’t say “some” as you would like to spin it…

“my views are progressive” is quite clear and precise.

and, yes, let’s look at his actions:

signed a ban on all semi-automatic weapons in Mass.
signed an individual mandate for health insurance
ran as pro-choice, then was pro-life, then was pro-choice, then was pro-life
supported abortion subsidies in Mass even after switching to pro-life
supported the Recovery Act (stimulus) before he was against it
supported immigration reform before he was against it
supported cap and trade before he was against it
supported gay marriage before he was against it
      supported TARP (bank bailouts)

So when his adviser says he will shake up his view like an etch-a-sketch, what he means is that he will finally be able to reveal that his progressive views were what he really believed all along and he just had to trick the backwater hicks in the GOP into nominating him.

      MARTINEZ012577,
Here is the full quote, but you missed the question…

“I think people recognize that I’m not a partisan Republican, that I’m someone who is moderate and my views are progressive, and that I’m going to go to work for our senior citizens, for people that have been left behind, for urban schools that are not doing the right job, and so they’re going to vote for me regardless of the party label.”

But when you see the clips on YouTube, you only hear the 6 second clip of “I think people recognize that I’m not a partisan Republican, that I’m someone who is moderate and my views are progressive.” Again he never said he is a Progressive, he said he had Progressive views, of which he did have some. This clip completely leaves out the question that the reporter asks, which is so important. If you look before this clip he was asked about being a partisan Republican that will not compromise with the legislature. If he was to do that in Massachusetts, nothing would get done. That is, nothing through his office; instead the 85% legislature would pass everything they wanted with no regard for the governor, landing him as a “lame duck” and not passing his conservative agenda.

The truth is, Romney did have some not-so-conservative or even progressive views. His stance that government needed to stay out of people choice on abortion was a progressive view. A stance he shared with Rick Santorum in the 90s.

Romney saying he has views that were progressive is no worse than Santorum saying that he was a Progressive Conservative and “not a Reagan Conservative.” Or when Gingrich praised FDR as his favorite President and then praised the Progressive Candidate. They, all three, used rhetoric because of where they were being elected… okay minus Gingrich because he was already elected and said it dozens of times.

People define words differently. A conservative in Maine would be a moderate in Tennessee and a liberal in Alabama. Romney said some of his views were progressive. That doesn’t necessarily mean what you think it means. The Merriam-Webster dictionary gives 8 definitions for the word. Romney is in his 60′s and not well-versed in bedrock conservative political vocabulary, so cut him some slack and don’t always assume the worst in people. He probably wasn’t using the word in the way you may think, and most of you accused him of having a tin ear and not expressing himself well in the past anyway.

What was Romney’s individual mandate? Was it the keystone of the program? What was his exchange?
Was Romney pro-choice or pro-life throughout his life? How many pro-abortion laws did he pass, how many did he reject? Which governor got abstinence teaching in schools? How many pro-life activist groups back Romney even after his admin?
Did Romney call for ‘affordable’ or did the courts in 1988? Would RomneyCare remove the abortion mandate from the insurance plans?
What was Romney‘s answer to Obama’s stimulus? What was the stimulus the Republicans working for? Were they the same?
Which governor signed the Arizona Law 5 years before Arizona? and English immersion classes? Which one spoke against immigration in both 1994 and 2002 elections?
Did Romney pass the RGGI or was he one of two that rejected it? Did he give an opt-out to businesses from paying for carbon offsets in Mass?
Did Romney tell a gay reporter from a gay newspaper that he was against Gay Marriage in ‘94?
Did Romney take the same stance as Glenn Beck on the TARP bailout? Was it for the banks or was it to save the dollar because there was no gold standard?

      BARACKSTALIN,

Your logic is to say that Romney said “all”. Truth is he was answering a question and never said all, and never said some, true. Looking at his record, his views are very conservative and yet you attack him.

I wish you would take the quiz, that way you would know that Romney is a conservative and not letting the media dictate what you believe about a man.

      To answer your accusations:
What violations against the 2nd amendment has he done. All the bill he signed were favored by GOAL and the NRA. So he hasn’t violated the 2nd amendment.

Romney took the libertarian view when he entered politics that the government shouldn’t play a role in our freedom. Later he found out that that wouldn’t work. Same experience Reagan and many others went through, so Reagan wouldn’t get your vote.

You live by mandates everyday. His mandate was not mandating you to buy anything, it was ‘pay for your own insurance or pay your own bill.’ That is down right libertarian. It was the legislature that changed it into a fine.

What trickery has he done, besides what the media and opponents are telling you. To say he had progressive views, he did have some, government out of abortion was one of them.

SO WHERE IS THE TRICKERY? ROMNEY IS A CONSERVATIVE

      NODOUBTTOM,

how much money has been spent against Santorum; how many against Gingrich (individually), how much against Paul? Now over the last 7 months, how many million have gone against Romney>>> more than all the rest individually.

As for false accusations. The only one to be called false was the claim against Gingrich on abortion put out by the SuperPAC. Even Santorum said that that ad against him, the one in the debate about him giving voting rights back to murderers was true. Santorum didn’t like it but he said that he did do that. How about the fact that most of Santorum’s attacks against Romney have been called false. How about the attack against Romney and Bain that was completely false and took those they interviewed out of context and they spoke out against the video. That was false accusations against Romney.

Romney has received more attacks then any one candidate, from opponents on the right and the left, this because he has been the front runner through most of the race and that is where everyone else got scrutiny. How much has Gingrich spent against Santorum, how much against Romney. Everyone is trying to be the anti-Romney and so dishing out the funds mostly through their PACs to take him down.

HOW IS THAT FAIR… YET ROMNEY IS THE ONLY ONE THAT DOESN‘T COMPLAIN AND THEY CAN’T USE THAT EXCUSE WHEN THEY ARE OUTSPENT BY OBAMA, PLEASE TELL ME THEY WOULDN‘T GO OUT IN THE GENERAL TO WHINE ABOUT OBAMA’S SPENDING, DOESN’T WORK.

      JJOY,

Sorry that is not his history.
TRUTH: Romney partnered with pro-gun groups on all gun bills, passing 8 pro-gun bills himself.

TRUTH: Romney has never said he believed in man-made global warming, saying “people may have contributed but don’t know how much” is not the same.

TRUTH: Romney never helped Obama write ObamaCare, would that make any sense if he wanted to be President. Jon Gruber is not the architect of a health care bill. He is an MIT economist, not a health care expert, who met with Romney once to run the numbers on Heritage’s plan. He will repeal it because it is a federal program that takes away from states and he has always been a strong federalist.

Romney has never been against oil drilling, his plan since 2007 was to drill so we could get off of foreign oil. He even shut down the RGGI which was the regional cap and trade agreement. He was one of two governors to reject it, stopping it from happening, until he left and Deval Patrick took over.

“There ain‘t a nickel’s worth of“ similarity ”in romney and obama…” (From your words)

WHY IS IT ALWAYS THE ESTABLISHMENT VS THE NON-ESTABLISHMENT…

If Reagan came back and ran again, the “Establishment” would vote for him, so would you not vote for him.

There is this great divide, even pushed by Santorum and Gingrich, but with out the establishment, we die. Without the non-establishment we die. Lets get over ourselves and remove that from the equation when it comes to picking the best candidate for America.

You should read the letter from the former employee of Romney’s superPAC. He was leaving because the campaign staff of Romney was trying to influence the PAC to become more positive in their message and he was mad at the fact that after a lot of indirect prodding Romney‘s ’Restore America’ was starting to put together positive ads. This ex-employee was mad because he felt they were going against the wishes of the donors to the PAC. Check it out on: http://www.buzzfeed.com/buzzfeedpolitics/why-i-am-leaving-restore-our-future

ROMNEY IS A CONSERVATIVE AND THE SUPERPAC IS THE ONE HURTING ROMNEY.

Did you know that it was proven that both Gingrich and Santorum attacked Romney first, not Romney, he has always reacted in his campaign ads, to their campaign ads. And Fact Checkers are saying that Santorum’s campaign negative ads are false. Just like Gingrich’s. Fact Checkers say Romney’s SuperPAC ads are also full of falsehoods, but never Romney’s personal ads… that is unless he attacks Obama.

Here was a quote from the PPP Poll analysis of the numbers they released to day, as it regards to Sarah Palin.

Palin is someone GOP delegates might be able to unify around in the case of a hopelessly deadlocked convention. She is seen positively by Gingrich voters (85/7), Santorum supporters (80/10), and Romney ones (57/27) alike. That’s a contrast to Romney who is disliked by both Santorum (38/48) and Gingrich (32/54) voters and Santorum who is disliked by Romney (38/48) voters and only seen narrowly favorably by Gingrich (46/42) backers.

What was the question the aide was asked. What will Romney do about independents since the he has gone so right. The aide then talked about the Eth-a-Sketch. This does not mean Romney will change his position but that they will relook at him after the primary and Romney will have to guide his talking points, rhetoric to match what will pull them in as well. No your message on what you concentrate on changes. Your center of focus changes to the group you are talking about. The base wants to know about Faith, Economy, and Gun Control. So you talk to them on those views. When you enter the general election the independents are your target and they are interested more in defense and economy, so you talk about you positions on them. If someone asks you about the other issues you answer the question and go back on subject. You gauge your message to the group you are talking to, not your positions and changing them. That is what the adviser was talking about. Romney will win the primary, then general, then fix the country. No doubt.

I love talking to those that are anti-Romney because they nit pick everything anyone said against Romney. Listen to it with a open mind and you would see that that he is talking about how politics works and the change froma primary campaign to a general. Reagan, Bush did it and so would Santorum or Gingrich.

i was under the working assumption that romney’s message was already geared for independents. I dont see how a candidate talks about different things in the general election – isnt the point to win people over to the republican party?

This has always been one of my problems with romney – he sees people as groups of voters. He should recognize that we are all americans born with the same desire for liberty. Ron Paul has a message that carries well with independents and he doesnt have to change a single thinig. funny how freedom works

He‘s for everything before he’s against it. He’s the Anti-John Kerry.

He was a Progressive Moderate in 2002 while running for MA Governor now he’s a “conservative”, then he gave Massachussetts Romneycare now he’s against Obamacare because of the mandate (which he supported waaaay back in 2010), and so on and so on and scooby dooby doo.

I don‘t know if Romney will make a good president or not but he can’t be any worse and I already know the devil in the WH now is about as bad as it gets!
This song reflects the lighter side of what one needs to do in order to participate in a game of poker and I use it here as a metaphor about running a business.
Obviously Romney has done that well and knows the lesson in the song.

      Listen to Bush in 1999.

TRACEYM: Whether he meant it or merely misspoke, the fact remains that a very large percentage of the Republican base do NOT have faith that Romney will follow through on what he says in the campaign should he get elected. What Santorum says has a certain “ring of truth” to it which is why he keeps saying it. Not that Santorum hasn’t changed stances in the past… there isn‘t a politician on the planet who hasn’t… but Romney has a major problem on his hands in convincing the base he can be trusted. That’s why turnout is lower in many states than in 2008, and why Romney barely squeaks by in states where he should be strong.

The dilemma for Republicans is that the base has more faith/trust in Santorum, but know that he’s weaker with independents than Romney. So, do they pick the candidate who appeals to independents but alienates the base, or pick the candidate who appeals to the base but alienates independents? Or, of course, they could pick one of the other two candidates who don’t seem to have a whole lot of support with anyone except, of course, their die-hard fans.

NOT a good situation to be in, if you ask me! It sure makes me scared that Obama might just squeak back in, and we ALL know what that means!
