Campus Christmas Carols Silenced After Non-Christian Complaints

For nearly 15 years, the Pulliam Hall clock tower on the campus of Southern Illinois University has played Christmas carols. But this year, after a few complaints, the bells have been briefly silenced while the school tries to expand its melodic tradition to include a more diverse selection of music.
“We took the music off the clock tower as a result of some complaints we received that religious music was offensive to non-Christians,” SIU Chancellor Rita Cheng told KFVS.
The local CBS affiliate reports that SIU administrators agreed Friday to start playing “secular holiday songs” until a more “multi-cultural mix” can be put together that includes songs from other faiths.

Posted on December 11, 2010 at 4:46amsecular humanists/marxists/sociallists
These are not interchangeable and acceptance of one set of ideological hypothesis does not automatically mean acceptance of the others.
Secular Humanist–A person who places emphasis on the importance of reason, or possibly natural law (non theistic) conceptions of morality, generally one that elevates or places humans in a central position, or one of reverence.
Marxist–Rejecting traditional property rights, particularly the legal institution of ownership, most typically ownership extending beyond consumption and immediate sustenance. Possibly in favor of an alternative set of property rights, such as usufruct, or, as in the case of anarchist traditions, no defined scheme of property rights other than natural ones.
Socialist–Advocating some form of public ownership, whether that be direct control by the State and/or State employees, or exercise of State power to distribute ownership amongst a broader section of public (i.e. restructuring firms to have more decentralized control in one form or another).

Hadn‘t realized that a couple was following us during our rendition of ’Go Tell It On The Mountain’. We the song was finished, the couple clapped and said that that was the type of Christmas songs they liked to hear. So we kept it up! No one told us to be quiet, but we did get a lot of smiles. :)
Think about the story of the Grinch. He tried to ruin Christmas and was surprised and confused when the ‘Who’s’ went right on celebrating. We must not let these cynics get what they want. Show them Christmas is in our hearts where it cannot be destroyed.

Posted on December 11, 2010 at 8:36amThere would be no “secular” Christmas songs without there being a Christmas in the first place. Would we be celebrating winter solstice? I doubt it. “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” may have nothing to do with Jesus Christ, but the song still references the C-word (”then one foggy Christmas eve, Santa came to say …”). Why don’t we sing “Frosty the Snowman” in February? It’s probably snowier in that month than December.

Have you looked at a school calendar lately. All the celebrated dates such as Christmas, Easter, etc. Have been erased. This is America and anything (including education/dream act) should be equal(for US citizens only) our ancestors and veterans have paid the dues in blood and many have paid the dues in taxes…enough is enough. Posted on December 11, 2010 at 3:17amOne of the most common statements from the “Religious Right” is that they want this country to “return to the Christian principles on which it was founded”. However, a little research into American history will show that this statement is a lie. The men responsible for building the foundation of the United States had little use for Christianity, and many were strongly opposed to it. They were men of The Enlightenment, not men of Christianity. They were Deists who did not believe the bible was true.
