Campus Christmas Carols Silenced After Non-Christian Complaints

For nearly 15 years, the Pulliam Hall clock tower on the campus of Southern Illinois University has played Christmas carols. But this year, after a few complaints, the bells have been briefly silenced while the school tries to expand its melodic tradition to include a more diverse selection of music.

“We took the music off the clock tower as a result of some complaints we received that religious music was offensive to non-Christians,” SIU Chancellor Rita Cheng told KFVS.

The local CBS affiliate reports that SIU administrators agreed Friday to start playing “secular holiday songs” until a more “multi-cultural mix” can be put together that includes songs from other faiths.

if we ran the University, we would have told them to go eat yellow snow. Dec 25th is CHRISTMAS and we AMERICANS celebrate it. it’s a NATIONAL holiday too. it is time the ADULTS here stood up and took our nation back from these spoiled little politically correct kids who all got “1st Place” trophies at T-ball. when will AMERICA stand up and say ENOUGH.

      secular humanists/marxists/sociallists

These are not interchangeable and acceptance of one set of ideological hypothesis does not automatically mean acceptance of the others.

Secular Humanist–A person who places emphasis on the importance of reason, or possibly natural law (non theistic) conceptions of morality, generally one that elevates or places humans in a central position, or one of reverence.

Marxist–Rejecting traditional property rights, particularly the legal institution of ownership, most typically ownership extending beyond consumption and immediate sustenance. Possibly in favor of an alternative set of property rights, such as usufruct, or, as in the case of anarchist traditions, no defined scheme of property rights other than natural ones.

Socialist–Advocating some form of public ownership, whether that be direct control by the State and/or State employees, or exercise of State power to distribute ownership amongst a broader section of public (i.e. restructuring firms to have more decentralized control in one form or another).

I am so sorry if our national holiday is offensive to some of those who choose to live here. Perhaps the complainers could find a more acceptable country with more acceptable traditions. I can tell you that if I decided to live in Iran, I wouldn’t expect them to would stop their call to prayers just to make me comfortable. And if this school wants to play Muslim songs on Muslim holidays and Jewish songs on Jewish holidays…go for it. I am not so easily offended.

Great idea. I had taken my Girl Scout troop through our local zoo for a field trip. We were singing Christmas carols along the way. Hadn‘t realized that a couple was following us during our rendition of ’Go Tell It On The Mountain’. We the song was finished, the couple clapped and said that that was the type of Christmas songs they liked to hear. So we kept it up! No one told us to be quiet, but we did get a lot of smiles. :)

Think about the story of the Grinch. He tried to ruin Christmas and was surprised and confused when the ‘Who’s’ went right on celebrating. We must not let these cynics get what they want. Show them Christmas is in our hearts where it cannot be destroyed.

There would be no “secular” Christmas songs without there being a Christmas in the first place. Would we be celebrating winter solstice? I doubt it. “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” may have nothing to do with Jesus Christ, but the song still references the C-word (”then one foggy Christmas eve, Santa came to say …”). Why don’t we sing “Frosty the Snowman” in February? It’s probably snowier in that month than December.

Now, the primary religion of the founders has been demonized. Now, Christians are not free to worship, but every other religion is. Have you looked at a school calendar lately. All the celebrated dates such as Christmas, Easter, etc. Have been erased. This is America and anything (including education/dream act) should be equal(for US citizens only) our ancestors and veterans have paid the dues in blood and many have paid the dues in taxes…enough is enough. One of the most common statements from the “Religious Right” is that they want this country to “return to the Christian principles on which it was founded”. However, a little research into American history will show that this statement is a lie. The men responsible for building the foundation of the United States had little use for Christianity, and many were strongly opposed to it. They were men of The Enlightenment, not men of Christianity. They were Deists who did not believe the bible was true.

The Christian community on campus should in turn become offended at the secular music which will be coming out of that clock tower. Take them to court and have the damn thing silenced for good. Let them have and eat their cake too. If Christians are not allowed to have the same considerations as the others, it sounds like a discrimination suit to me.

It‘s ANOTHER ACLU complaint I’m sure. aclu who makes their money tearing at the moral fabric of America. ILLINOIS IS ONE OF THEIR CHOICEST STATES. So what are you going to do Illinois? In other places a small boy was not allowed to ride to school with a flag on his bike…they took care of that one after a day or so. In another…they would not allow the symbol of a cross at a military burial cemetary….that to changed….WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ILLINOIS?

I am honestly disappointed in the Salukis. Where in the student Christian population to stand up and tell the administration their disappointment

Is that the sound of “calling people to prayer” I hear? Merry, Merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year to everyone on this site! Let’s celebrate the birth of our King because now more than ever we need his guidance and grace. Thank you all for giving me a place to vent.

For their “multi-cultural mix“ might I suggest they play ”Have a Rama-Hanu-Kwanz-Mas.” The next time I visit an Islamic Country, I wonder what would happen if I told them to tone down the calls for prayer.

Christianity and all that is Christian is constantly under attack. The few times we strike back we get painted as making a big deal over nothing. The concept of the overwhelming majority (over 75% of the nation that claims to be Christian)having to change 100′s of years of tradition for a pushy loud minority (frequently 1 jackass and his lawyers) who claims offense is mind boggling. WE NEED TO MAKE A STAND NOW! ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!

The complainers should not be allowed to be anonymous. If it is going to change the way things have been for decades they should have an open debate at the university, an open Mic would be nice. We all could hear the bologna that spews from the tiny few people who want to change or should I say erase everything we hold of value in this country. Change is good but moral fiber demolition is and should not be tolerated.

Truthandprosperity:” Posted on December 11, 2010 at 3:17am: One of the most common statements from the “Religious Right” is that they want this country to “return to the Christian principles on which it was founded”….. ” They were men of The Enlightenment, not men of Christianity. They were Deists who did not believe the bible was true.”========
You need to update your propaganda, see link below. Of the 204 “Founding Fathers”, 54% were Episcopalian/Angelican, 18% Presbyterian and 16% Congregationalists.

Do not let them win! Plan a date for everyone to stand outside the University and sing the Christmas Carols! Christmas is the celebration of Jesus Birthday and celebrate we will and for the people whom
are against it “Oh Well” they can plug their ears!

This is total bs. I went to Oklahoma State and there are a lot of foreign people that attend/work there (I would guess about 20-25%) and I didn’t hear any complaining.
Plus, the college is in Illinois. Chicago style politics are leaking out.
