Can You Tell How This Robot ALWAYS Wins (and Cheats) at Rock-Paper-Scissors?

As robots become more artificially intelligent, one might assume that someday they could be programmed to read your very thoughts. This would make for a very frustrating game of rock-paper-scissors (or roshambo or janken depending on who you talk to).
Engineers in the Ishikawa Oku Lab at the University of Tokyo already developed this rock-paper-scissors master, but, as Popular Science explains, “there’s no algorithmic wizardry or predictive computation here.” The robot is cheating. Using a high-speed camera, within one milisecond the robot hand can figure out what shape you’ll be throwing down with your hand.

Watch the video and see if you can tell:
According to the experiment’s website, this technology shows “a possibility of cooperation control within a few miliseconds,” with the vision of it being used for humans who need some sort of robotic help or for tasks that are done in cooperation between humans and robots.

Posted on June 28, 2012 at 11:45pmYeah, well it hasn’t tried playing against a human with the attitude of Alexander the Great. If you recall, Alexander examined the Gordian Knot and then “solved” it by slicing it with his sword. I’m guessing Alexander II will examine the robot, accuse it of cheating, and then inflict a similar penalty with a more modern weapon.

Posted on June 28, 2012 at 9:34pmFarmer John is only wasting your time if you permit him to do so. As for his own time, isn’t that totally up to him? Why would you think you have anything to say about how he spends it? Talk about arrogant!
