Can You Tell the Difference Between Rich and Poor Neighborhoods in These Satellite Images?

There are often stark differences between the looks of wealthy and poor neighborhoods. But one of the features that you might not have considered as a defining factor are trees.

Tim DeChant for Per Square Mile, a blog about density, says that richer neighborhoods have more trees than those less well off. He writes:

Research published a few years ago shows a tight relationship between per capita income and forest cover. The study’s authors tallied total forest cover for 210 cities over 100,000 people in the contiguous United States using the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s natural resource inventory and satellite imagery. They also gathered economic data, including income, land prices, and disposable income.

They found that for every 1 percent increase in per capita income, demand for forest cover increased by 1.76 percent. But when income dropped by the same amount, demand decreased by 1.26 percent. That’s a pretty tight correlation. The researchers reason that wealthier cities can afford more trees, both on private and public property. The well-to-do can afford larger lots, which in turn can support more trees. On the public side, cities with larger tax bases can afford to plant and maintain more trees. Given the recent problems New York City has had with its aging trees dropping limbs on unsuspecting passers-by—and the lawsuits that result—it’s no surprise that poorer cities would keep lean tree inventories.

DeChant then wanted to see — literally — if you could tell the difference between richer and poorer areas based on tree coverage. He took to Google Earth in order to peer down on neighborhoods via satellite, and here’s what he found:

Per Square Mile Blog Shows Categorizes Satellite Images of Neighborhoods as Rich or Poor Based on Tree Density

Poor: Rochinha neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro. (Image: Google Earth via Per Square Mile)

Can you tell the difference?

See more of DeChant’s comparison photos here. Per Square Mile is a blog that, according to its description, is “about what happens when people live like packed sardines. It’s also about what happens when people live so far apart they can go days without seeing another soul. It’s about living amongst trees and prairies, and living in places miles away from them. It’s about the trees and the prairies, too. And lakes and streams and animals and insects.”

      hahaha..
A cursory glance at campaign contribution records demonstrates that Northern Trust officials were clearly in Sen. Obama’s hip pocket. Since 1990, employees of Northern Trust have contributed more than $71,000 to Obama, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. Five of 13 board members of Northern Trust had given previously to Obama’s Senate campaign before the Obamas received their home loan, including Northern Trust Chairman William Osborn, who contributed $1,000 on Sept. 30, 2003. Further, the bank’s political action committee, the Northern Trust Employees Good Government Fund, contributed $1,250 to Obama in 2004.

Even the Northern Trust management has personal connections to Obama, including current Exelon (Commonwealth Edison) Chairman and CEO John Rowe – a later successor of Bill Ayers’ father, Tom Ayers, who has been a member of the bank’s board of directors since 2004. Another board member is Susan Crown, whose family has been one of Obama’s proven fundraisers. Crown’s brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Paula Crown, are bundlers for Obama, and the Crown family has given at least $56,000 to Obama campaigns. Northern Trust general counsel Kelly R. Walsh, who contributed $1,500 to Obama a little more than one month before the Obamas were given their home loan, is married to current Joyce Foundation President Ellen Alberding. Alberding coincidentally served on the board of the Joyce Foundation with Obama in 2001.

Welfare folks have a habit of carving pathways right over a nice lawn instead of using the sidewalk.

Those who work to own property tend to spend a little extra on their water bill to sprinkle their lawns.

Welfare folks fling their cigarette butts and EBT card receipts on the sidewalk.

No he didn’t, he was involved with Syrian born Tony Rezco. Patty Blagojevich was also a broker for Rezco while convicted Rod Blagojevich was governor of Illinois. The terrorist Bill Ayers also lives in the same neighborhood, but Obama never met him. He just launched his Illinois Senate campaign in Bill Ayers living room. Bill Ayers father Thomas Ayers, who was CEO of Commonweath Edison from 1973 to 1980, paid for part of Obama’s education too. But they still never met.

I’ve been living in the Chicago since 1970 and have seen all of these criminals in action long before you even heard of Obama. Until 4 years ago, you probably thought Obama was a company that delivered steaks to your front door.

The roofing materials in the rich complexes are better quality and there are more decorative features and penthouses. At night there will be less neon lights, traffic signals and police cars in the rich areas too. This is well known technique for developing large real estate projects and for figuring out the demographic wealth to facilitate deciding where to locate a nearby shopping center or mall. There was Egypt, Jordan, and Saudia Arabia under the Ottoman Empire. Palestine was created when Arabs refused to leave a wasteland buffer zone between the new Israel, Jordan, and Egypt because they wanted Israel despite losing WWII with Hitler. Jordan and Egypt refused to take the territory and the people in it, so to this day they live in a crappy wasteland in between several real countries because they chose to stay there to “kill the Jews.” True story, bro.

I have a tree in my yard and a two baby trees.

Does that make me rich ?

Well no, but it sure makes it nicer to live there.

That was what I noticed as the difference .. trees .. darn I must be rich ( I have a palm tree 5 fruit trees and two shade trees in Florida) and stinking rich (I have a LITTLE cottage in Michigan surrounded by trees so much that you can’t see any of the houses from google earth in that area).

No it makes you poor. You should own at least five trees.

You have now put a bulls eye on yourself. Some enterprising young liberal named Don Quitoxic will find you 7 tax you for the audacity of having more trees than some who didn’t win the birth lottery & was unfortunate to be born poor.

The King of England used to tax windows of houses. State government literally have the ability to tax you per plumbing fixture that you have in your house. Electronic databases meets politicians & the tax paying public loses.

I once saw a house in England that was around 400 years old. They actually bricked up a few windows so as to not pay taxes that they could not or would not afford. It is in the town of Salisbury England.
