Canada Abolishes Rifle, Shotgun Registration

(The Blaze/AP) — Canada’s Conservative government introduced legislation Tuesday to scrap a controversial law that requires the registration of rifles and shotguns.
Canada has long required registration of hand guns, but the long-gun registry law passed in 1995 faced bitter opposition from rural Canada, the Conservative party’s base, which considered it an overreaction to the problem of urban crime.
Public Safety Minister Vic Toews said they don’t want laws targeting law-abiding citizens such as hunters.
Police and victims groups are voicing opposition, but the Conservatives have a new majority in Parliament after national elections in May, and can now scrap the law.
Prime Minister Stephen Harper previously tried to kill it, but his bill was narrowly defeated in the last Parliament.
The former Liberal government passed the tougher gun control law after Marc Lepine shot to death 14 students with a semiautomatic rifle at Montreal’s Ecole Polytechnique in 1989.
Families of the victims began holding news conferences and lobbying politicians. By March 1991, they had collected 550,000 names on a petition urging federal action.
After the bill won final passage in 1995, former Liberal Prime Minister Jean Chretien’s first comment was that many Americans would be envious. Chretien noted that the U.S. went the other way and said and it would give Canada “a personality different from the people of the south of us and I’m very proud.”
But Harper’s Conservative government vowed to abolish the law when they took power in 2006 and the Conservatives celebrated the announcement Tuesday.
“The Harper government has stood on the side of law-abiding firearms owners, farmers, hunters, and rural Canadians in every region of this country,” said Conservative lawmaker Candice Hoeppner, who joined Conservative colleagues in announcing the new bill at a farm outside of Ottawa.
Hoeppner said the registry has been a waste of taxpayers’ dollars, close to $2 billion. She called it a “defining moment” for the Conservative government.
But an internal evaluation from Canada’s national police force found the federal gun registry was a useful tool for police. An umbrella group for Quebec police forces also said rifles and shotguns are most used to kill police officers in domestic violence cases, suicides and incidents involving youth.
The Coalition for Gun Control urged Canadians to tell their lawmakers to oppose the legislation.
Priscilla de Villiers, whose daughter, Nina, was abducted and killed with a legally owned rifle, defended the long-gun registry.
“No law can prevent all tragedies. But a gun-control law, which includes registration and is rigorously implemented, makes it harder — not easier — for dangerous people to get firearms,” she said.
The new bill will repeal the requirement to register long guns, and calls for the destruction of all records pertaining to the registration of long guns currently contained in the Canadian Firearms Registry.

Posted on October 26, 2011 at 12:59pmWell as least our gun laws haven’t gotten that bad yet. So far we haven’t had to register hunting rifles or shotguns, at least not in Florida. I think nation wide in the US it is legal to buy a rifle or shotgun with no waiting and no registration.

Posted on October 26, 2011 at 1:49pmI wonder how many people died in car crashes the Year that Marc Lepine killed those 14 people? How many 10s of thousands died of cancer, the flu, murder by knife, strangling etc. Guns get a real bad rap in this situation because its all at once and its seen in real time, but with the millions of law abiding citizens out there who own guns and do not repeat these heinous crimes makes the other stats pale in comparision. I’m glad the Canucks have some balls on this one. Who knows, those hunters may save their asses someday.

Ammunition registration was defeated recently, but will be back. If California would split up it’s electoral votes, there would never be another democrat elected – San Francisco and Los Angeles control the entire states electoral votes. Most counties in the state are conservative, but not enough population in those areas to swing the vote.

So, in California, only the ILLEGAL ALIENS AND LAWLESS PEOPLE HAVE GUNS, RIGHT? Oh, and did I forget, the same people who outlawed your guns, HAVE GUNS. So, this means you should get more involved in overturning those dumb laws. All of you in California, who are NOT liberals, should do 1 of two things:
1. Make contact with pro-gun groups and SUPPORT THEM IN ANY WAY YOU CAN!
2. Get out of that state. Move to a state that does not limit your freedoms. Good site to start with:
http://www.ccrkba.org/
Otherwise, you are doomed. This is why we need to remove the U.N. and other global entities from our sovereignty. The U.N. wants to remove our guns, but I do believe they won’t try it right now. They will wait until we are asleep again. SO, AMERICANS: STAY AWAKE!!!
One of the strongest pro gun arguments is the simple undeniable truth that, in most cases, strict gun regulations have not worked. Britain’s 1997 ban on all handguns was supposed to be the gold standard of what rigid restrictions on guns and ammo could do for the world. However, the end result was that banned handguns became the weapon of choice and the use of these guns in crime rose by 40% from 1998 to 2000. The rate of violent crime in England’s inner cities more than doubled from 1997 to 2001. So the answer to the question of banning weapons to make the nation safer can be plainly stated: No. http://www.buckeyefirearms.org/node/7819

Posted on October 26, 2011 at 3:21pmSir consider yourself lucky; in Massachusetts you must obtain a license (and you are not gauranteed one, this is a “may issue” state, not a “shall issue” state) to purchase any weapon, including mace or pepper spray. Also all firearms must be registered.
@BSDETECTOR … HAHA “Scary weapon ban” … we have that here too. I have to buy a different rifle for myself and my girlfriend because her arms are short and she can’t safely operate my rifle when we go plinking. But those adjustable stocks, which would fit both my long lanky arms, and her short arms, are just too “evil” to be legal.

Posted on October 26, 2011 at 7:42pmI guess you don’t consider filling out a paper form, having the FBI run background check, and that form and processig number from the FBI being stored on record by the seller of the new firearm is registration. If you believe that we don’t already have a defacto registration system put in place on every thing considered more dangerous than a knife you must have jell-o between your ears because you cannot put one and one together to make two.
While it is true that private transfers are unregulated… that is only on non-automatic weapons and if you happen to build a rifle yourself and don’t have it registered by the ATF they can get you for having an unregistered explosive device. We live in a police state and are in a cage that most people choose not to see because they are truly afraid of being outside of it and fear the meaning of true Liberty.

Posted on October 27, 2011 at 9:49amGood for Florida. In NEW JERSEY they have had Firearms ID cards since 1968. You need to be finger printed, go through a State Police Background check to make sure you have committed no crimes and they do a mental health background check to make sure you have not been institutionalized for a mental health problem before you can even get the FIREARMS ID CARD. And if you want to buy a handgun you need a separate pistol permit: You need a firearms ID card first then you have to apply for a pistol permit which they do the the State Police and Mental Health background checks all over again. The permit is good for ninety days and can be renewed once. It is for one gun only. Corzine(D) passed a law that you can only buy one firearm a month (keep voting for those Democrats you morons) so now you can only apply for one pistol permit at a time. You used to be able to apply for as many as you wanted. IT takes one month for the State to process the permit and $26. (sometimes longer). Needless to say we will be moving to PA in two years once retired. All you have to do in Pa to buy any kind of gun is give them your driver’s license and have the run the NICS check.

Posted on October 26, 2011 at 12:44pmThe premise that gun control laws will make it more difficult to obtain weapons is simply false. The criminals will obtain weapons through illegal means, thus sidestepping any government-placed regulations. The effect of gun control will only have a detrimental effect on the law abiding citizens who wish to simply protect themselves. It is the means of tyranny to disarm the people of a society that would prevent them to protect themselves, not from just each other, but from the government itself. “All power comes from the barrel of a gun” — Mao Zedong, and since the government knows that it can only establish rule by force, then it will attempt to take away the ability of a people to defend themselves. Furthermore, if everyone carried a weapon and knew how to use it, then there would be a lot less person crimes to begin with. “An armed society is a polite society” — Robert Heinlein

It will not happen in Ohio as we have more law-abiding gun-owners than most states, except Texas and those western states. The northern midwest states are usually IFFY, but Ohio won’t stand for some candy-butt liberal telling us what to do with out guns. The minute they knock on my door will be the minute I answer with my concealed carry gun, “Don’t worry about outrunning my dogs. Worry about outrunning my gun!” That happened once when a Democrat came to my door asking me to support a Democrat candidate (I always carry my gun in my holster, even around the house). They totally freaked. As he was running from my front door, I yelled, “I wasn’t going to shoot, honest! I thought you were a burglar. Come back, please……NOT.” Of course, I am a law-abiding citizen and have never even gotten a ticket, but our neighborhood had some home invasions at that time and I was taking no chances. I do believe that God would not want me to allow the devil victory over me, so if I am attacked (without my provoking it) in my home, or on the street, with a gun, guess what? You‘ll get to meet your maker and it won’t be God. Will I be sorry? NOT FOR DEFENDING MYSELF. I will only be sad that I had to do it as I would never want to kill or hurt another human being, really I do not. BUT, if you are foolish enough to challenge me with your evil superiority, then you’d better be ready for battle because I do believe the Constitution was God-inspired, which includes the 2nd Amendment, and with that, I will shoot you if you challenge me to that fight upon attacking me, my family, my home, or wherever I am.
I hope that those of you reading this, who want to take guns away from law-abiding citizens, understand that even if you do pass a law to remove guns, IT JUST WON’T HAPPEN. All you will do then is make law-abiding citizens unlawful abiding citizens, meaning, we will bury our guns or hide them for such a time as we need them. I also have SWORDS, bow and arrows and all kind of hunting-type weapons. I use them all very well. I suggest before you attack me or my home, that you make a very careful assessment of your possible outcome. I WILL WIN AND YOU WILL BE DEAD, I promise you. DO NOT TEST ME.

Posted on October 26, 2011 at 12:37pmIsn’t Liberty the way of the Lord? Now the accusers will accuse God of being the ultimate dictator, but is God….really? Didn’t God give men the Holy Bible for them to freely understand, and do men? Do men understand that by God saying give me your first-born, that is God telling men how to make it so that your first-born understand the Father’s word is good? And in the understanding of the Bible men should have seen how the light is divided into all people. And if people understood this thing, then when someone is brain-dead and on artificial life-support thereby the answer is clear what to do. Then the light is divided this way: the people who oppose the disconnection of life support, they understand a lot of the Commandment “Thou shall not kill”, and those who want the person disconnected from life-support, they understand a lot of the Commandment of “Give me your children” which means to let the Lord decide what will become of them. Moreover it is that both view-points are correct, and yet both view-points are incorrect, but yet they both work towards good.
Report Post »Eliasim
Posted on October 26, 2011 at 12:43pmAnd the reason both view-points are incorrect is because they haven’t yet figured out why it is they have those view-points. Therefore how do they make a sound decision? The correct decision is to give them to the Lord to see what the Lord does.

Posted on October 26, 2011 at 2:51pmGod does not reward stupidity. The problem with Americans today is they’ve lost their COMMON SENSE. Christians are fighting a SPIRITUAL battle and not a carnal one. Therefore, if a person, who does not follow or obey Christ, allows himself.herself to be overtaken by evil, then it is a CHOICE. I also have a CHOICE. God would NOT fault, condemn, or blame someone for defending themselves or their families. The devil is the one who has come to steal, rob, and take away from the good people of God. Therefore, the spiritual battle ends up becoming a carnal battle of WILLS. If I have a gun and I follow God, which I do, it will depend on how you perceive the scriptures. This is why God has told us that if we want more wisdom, TO ASK FOR IT. I do all the time as I do not want to make a decision that is not thought out. I pray daily, read my Bible, and I daily ask the Lord to protect my home and my being. HE ALWAYS HAS AND ALWAYS WILL. Why? Because I have asked for HIS wisdom and I follow HIS commandments. I try to live peacefully with all men, even the ones who do not like me. It took me YEARS to get to this place, so it is NOT instantaneous. The reason God is NOT prevalent or honored in our society is NOT because He has left us. WE HAVE LEFT HIM. WE have allowed the MINORITY to rule over us. Lately, when I get into a debate with the opposing side, I tell them to PRAY ON IT and ask for wisdom. 9 out of 10 times, they come with changed minds.

Posted on October 26, 2011 at 12:32pmThat is why I am moving OUT of NJ!!! New Jersey requires a “Firearms ID card” in order to purchase ammo, guns and yes, BB guns! Good for you Canadians, I gained a bit more respect for our Norther neighbors…
