‘Turd Jesus’: Canadian Punk Band Creates Offensive Album…Using Taxpayer Dollars

Editor’s note: CONTENT WARNING — some curse words in this post have not been redacted.
What you’re about to see is some album art from the Canadian punk band Living With Lions. But if you’re a person of faith, it’s something that may enrage you. And if you are a person opposed to taxpayers funding offensive religious art, then you will be fuming.
This is how LA Weekly, which first broke the story, describes the band’s new album:
Vancouver punk rockers Living With Lions just released their sophomore album today. It’s called Holy Shit, is subtitled “The Poo Testament,” and has liner notes that recreate the Ascension with Christ portrayed as a turd. Oh, and the album is sponsored by the Canadian government.
Gawker has mashed together pictures of all those elements. On the left is “Turd Jesus,” on the right is the album cover, and the inset on the right is the country’s seal showing that the album was paid for in part by the Canadian government:
In the acknowledgements, the band even thanks the government:
According to the Vancouver Sun, the funding came from a program called FACTOR (depicted on the back of the album), or the Foundation Assisting Canadian Talent on Recordings. How much funding? $13,248.
Now that the government’s funding involvement has been made public, Canadian Heritage Minister James Moore (whose department is thanked in the acknowledgements) is speaking out.
“The content of this CD is offensive and the fact that it is clearly designed to offend a group of Canadians based on their faith is simply wrong,” James Maunder, Moore’s spokesman, said in a statement to the Sun. “The Minister has called Duncan McKie, president and CEO of FACTOR to express his profound disappointment with this content.”
But a spokesman for the group’s record label, Black Box Recordings, told the Sun the whole thing is a joke, and thus shouldn’t be taken seriously.
“I’d like it to be well understood that the lyrical content on this record makes no reference to any religious themes whatsoever,” Ian Stanger told the Sun. “To say that this band has a unique and sometimes provocative sense of humour is nothing new.
Later, he added that people who are offended just don’t get it.
“I think there’s a tongue-in-cheek element of this record people may be missing. I don’t think it’s meant to be a serious criticism or commentary on religion. It’s a joke.”

We could protest about that to our representatives. What are we supposed to do about this? Hate Canada? Is the Blaze just going to post things from around the world that might offend us? Is this site just mere agitprop? I don’t see how this story is much different than radical muslim clerics stoking up their masses with stories of Danish cartoons.

As a Canadian, I’d rather they fund everything equally, good and bad then go through with the plan they tried before. A few years back they tried to hide a provision in an update to our Crime Act that would give the ruling party control over who gets funding in the arts and only those projects that directly reflect the party values.
So that’s the choices you have, do you want to be offened or do you want all art to be propaganda. I say all art since most projects up here you can’t get private funding for smaller projects unless you already have the government grant under your belt.

If I hadn’t been told that Jesus had been replaced with a turd, I never would’ve noticed. This story is stupid for at least a half-dozen other reasons, which I will list now:
Report Post »a) It’s funded with Canadian tax dollars; we in The US haven’t been taxed a dime for this.
b) The story should’ve highlighted the semi-socialized Canadian music/broadcast industry, which makes such inferior, talentless music acts necessary (see: The Crash Test Dummies– still a viable entity in Canada, somehow).
c) It’s the most boring album cover ever, poo or not. Want to see a great, offensive album cover? Go find Witchfinder General’s “Death Penalty” album.
d) If anything, this story will direct more traffic to the band’s stupid Facebook page.
e) The story makes more ads with Russian immigrant-style errors in grammar & usage pop up on my screen. “Let us you plant a survival garden!!!” Sure, I’ll trust you with my credit card number, Yuri!
f) It’s a Canadian punk band. Canada is a culture built upon being bland and polite. Any band could be offensive in Canada by simply singing about jaywalking.

Posted on May 21, 2011 at 11:36amI am a comedian and have been writing and performing comedy for more than 30 years and my opinion on this product is that it epitomizes the lack of creative talent that passes as art in this world. I understand that comedy is a subjective art and that there will be many who find this sort of garbage amusing but I imagine that these are the same who do not appreciate the difference between a gourmet meal and a pop tart.
