Fired-Up Rep. Waters To Black Voters: We Don‘t Criticize Obama Because You ’Love’ Him

The scene Tuesday at a Congressional Black Caucus tour stop in Detroit mirrored a large-scale argument more than a political town hall meeting. And things got testy when Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters expressed disappointment with the president and challenged the crowd regarding its “love” for Obama.

“We don’t put pressure on the president,” said Waters to cheers and jeers as people interrupted at will and yelled at her. “Let me tell you why. We don‘t put pressure on the president because ya’ll love the president. You love the president. You’re very proud…to have a black man [in the White House] …First time in the history of the United States of America. If we go after the president too hard, you’re going after us.”

She then told the fired-up crowd that voters must “unleash” the Democrats on Obama (some obliged) before criticizing him for not visiting any “black community” during his bus tour:

“When you tell us it‘s alright and you unleash us and you tell us you’re ready for us to have this conversation, we’re ready to have the conversation. The Congressional Black Caucus loves the president too. We‘re supportive of the president but we’re getting tired ya’ll…we’re getting tired. And so, what we want to do is…we want to give the president every opportunity to show what he can do and what he’s prepared to lead on. We want to give him every opportunity…but our people are hurting. The unemployment is unconscionable. We don’t know what the strategy is. We don‘t know why on this trip that he’s in the United States now, he’s not in any black community…we don’t know that.”

There is a lot to digest in that video. For starters, how come a sitting congresswoman can get away with referencing “our people” and not face any backlash?

Second, the comments point to a division within the black community — and even among liberals — that has been brewing over the last few years. While many were excited for the historic election of a black president, an increasing number of them are upset the president hasn’t done enough for them.

Could it be, though, that the people of Detroit have too high of expectations? Remember this clip about “free Obama money” from 2009?

Third, it may be disconcerting to some to hear a Rep. admit that there are those in Congress who — despite disagreeing with the president — are keeping quiet for fear of retribution. What happened to courage?

Rush Limbaugh pointed that out (via Daily Rushbo) on radio Wednesday, finding it comical that Waters had to ask the black community “permission” to go after the president:

And that brings us to our final point: what better timing for an event calling for people to stand with courage?

      Want to fight back turn this thing over, flip around and push anyone who pulls the race card, when speaking about Obama, charge them as racists b/c they ignore his half white heritage!       Its time for the Republican to loudly protest any organization that has “black” in front of it, or else start a caucus with “white” in front of its name and see how they would like that. She’s a commie who is disappointed, because she thought Obama would destroy our Republic in one fell swoop and establish a commie dictatorship, like Castro did in Cuba. That is why she is critical of him. His black skin (which is not African American) was a convenient tool, and it still is.       There’s a double-standard, where racism is concerned, no doubt. But, I can’t attack an entire race. I’m a conservative and there are many good black conservatives, who love and have served America well. I know black liberals who are very good people, don‘t care for their political views but they shouldn’t be linked with the “haters” of the world.

      With all this said, Maxine is one of those “haters”, who’s allowed to hate because of the color of her skin – but I won’t put all people of one race together.

      I think the root of her speech is most blacks thought Obama would come in, take the money from the rich and give to those without – again, not all blacks thought this way but many are now understanding that Socialism will not get them ahead in this country – working, gaining an education and being good citizens will erase racism and rise up their race quicker. I like Herman Cain, JC Watts and other black conservatives – I once felt this way about Colin Powell, bought 2 of his books but he showed what he was about when he supported Obama. Star Parker is a great example of a black woman who was forced off welfare and discovered what she could do with her god-given abilities as a writer – she broke free.

    If that isn‘t a racist then I really don’t know what the definition of a racist is. It is simply stupid and idiotic to follow obummer just for the fact that he is black, he’s an idiot also. It’s people like that who have gotten us into the trouble were in.And by the way, thats the only way he could of ever gotten elected to office, was by leading the ignorant like the piped piper led the rats.

    No not true. She won‘t criticize Obama because he’s black. 2008, 90% blacks voted for Obama. 2012 we’ll see around 80% black vote for Obama. Nothing wrong with that but let’s just be honest here.

      Waters’ words are almost Orwellian. It’s frightening that an elected official in the United States today can speak in that manner and still retain their office.
      How insulting to every black person in the country that this disgusting little woman states that to criticize one black man (half white actually) is to criticize an entire culture. It’s sickening. She’s actually enticing black Americans to maintain a group think mindset, never to question a black official and never hold them accountable and to vote on racial lines. Sickening..utterly bereft of any integrity and dignity.

    It’s sad that African Americans were used to get Obama elected. They are bewildered. Their unemployment is much worse than any other. It’s not getting any better. I hope they realize that they were played.

      “Bewildered.” I like that word choice. It’s really a very generous and considerate criticism.

      Hopefully “their people” find a Moses, who isn’t Jewish, who can lead their people out of the “Wilderment” and into the promised land. Let “their people” go, Obama. Freedom brother, freedom. Thank God their people are free at last. (Hopefully it won’t take forty years to discover the Maxie is a moron.)

      I probably would have used “baffled,“ but I think ”bewildered” worked best.
