Cantor Vows to Fight Tax Hikes as GOP Plans for New ‘Contract With America’

In an op-ed in today’s Wall Street Journal, Eric Cantor (R-VA) made it clear that there is no room for compromise when it comes to extending the Bush-era tax cuts — a sharp tone as Republicans are poised to reveal a new “Contract with America” on Thursday.
“Republicans unequivocally oppose any impending tax increase,” he wrote, and explained the reasons why.
The first reason, he says, “concerns the pain that tax increases threaten to inflict on our economy over the short term.“ The second is ”to stop the slide under our current leadership towards becoming a stagnant European-style welfare state with limited individual opportunity and entrepreneurship.”
In contrast to the billions spent in stimulus money, Cantor frames the current tax debate as a fight for a “real stimulus,” and the cost of losing the battle is too high:
The reality is that this tax hike is just one more step along the way to creating an anticompetitive new norm in this country marked by bigger government, less growth and structurally higher taxes and unemployment. The strategy to achieve the progressive left’s endgame is simple. First comes the provocative class warfare rhetoric. Second comes the vast assumption of government control over the economy. Third comes the growth of government spending and entitlements. And alas, higher taxes on our nation’s job creators and workers.
But Cantor’s position seems contradictory to the one taken by Rep. John Boehner, who many believe will be the new Speaker of the House. Last week, Boehner conveyed a possible compromise when he said he would vote to extend tax cuts just for the middle class if that was his only choice.
Appearing to address the issue at least tangentially, Cantor writes that letting the tax cuts expire will not just affect “millionaires and billionaires”: “Roughly half of all small business income in America will face a higher rate, making this tax increase a direct assault on job creation and innovation.”
A united front is as important as ever for the GOP heading into mid-term elections this fall. Signaling a desire to portray such an image, the GOP announced today that it will unveil its new “Contract with America” on Thursday. The new contract, like the one in 1994, will show what the Republicans plan to do should they win back the House this fall.
According to The Hill, Republican candidates won’t sign the new governing document as GOP candidates did in a highly-publicized event in 1994. Still, the contract will provide the party with action items they can present to voters as they campaign ahead of the November elections.
“This is a government document,” Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), who’s helping draft the contract, told The Hill last week. “We’re writing these bills now. Candidates are out campaigning. This is about legislation — doing it right now.”

Posted on September 20, 2010 at 4:34pmlets review facts on this one. Holding the line on the Bush tax cuts only keeps taxes at current levels for everyone. THIS IS NOT A TAX CUT. Some people don’t even understand this simple fact. It is more expedient for these partisans to say this is Republicans helping the rich.
Report Post »The real debate is who do we trust with our tax money? Obama and his free spending economic advisors merrily mortgaging our future? Rino Republicans like Cantor who say one thing to get elected than cooperate with liberals when it is convenient for them? How about leaving the money with the small and large businesses that actually hire people? Is there anyone in their right mind who believes the trillion dollars we spent on pork and political kickbacks would not have created more jobs in the private sector if we gave tax breaks and incentives to businesses so they hire more people? Unemployment is currently around 9.5 % and higher if you count under employed (me) or those who stopped looking for work. The reason Obama and his Czars demonize big business is that they don’t want us to focus on the most wasteful and greedy destroyer of jobs and wealth…the federal government.

Posted on September 20, 2010 at 5:54pmGovernment used $11 million to create a little over 50 average salaried jobs in CA. That’s $2 million per worker. This is not an efficient use of money, nor is it an isolated incident.. Why didn’t they just give each one $1 million, and saved the rest? Or invested it in small businesses so they could hire workers? Our current economic policies appear to be designed to fail.

Posted on September 20, 2010 at 6:02pmYes there are people out there who are a lot more trust worthy and would be a lot better leaders if the press and other news media wouldn’t shut them out. And people also need to go online and actually do some homework .
Report Post »Personally the libertarian party is my choice of a solution. They seem really radical but think about how much money could be cut from the government budget if we got the government out of business, out of our pockets and made people responsible for there own lives , told the rest of the world the money train has shut down ,and ran the country according to law.
If the two main parties had some real concerns over a third oh what a wonderful change that would be. Just remember if you think it can’t be done that Abe Lincoln was the first president from a little known third political party called the Republican Party.

Posted on September 20, 2010 at 4:09pmDefinitely looking forward to seeing the new contract. Let’s have some real debate about core issues and see where each side lies (no pun intended) on each issue. So tired of personal attacks during election season, or what someone said or did 20 years ago in thier private lives. The only thing that matters to me is where they stand on the issues, and that they follow through with thier word when they make promises. Get this thing together, make those who agree sign it, and enact it! This should be work like an actual contract would – if you sign and don’t live up to what you have promised, your seat should be repo’d.

Posted on September 20, 2010 at 11:32pmIt is not going to matter who We elect into office if WE do not start coming up with REAL ideas for fixing our problems.
As long as We The People are not willing to accept cuts in the budgets that affect us, nothing is going to change.
1. Those on medicare that can afford to not use it must stop using it.
2. Those on social security that can afford to not use it must stop accepting it.
3. Those on welfare must get to work or get support from their families.
4. We must be willing to accept roads that are run down, fewer street lights and bike paths.
5. Those that work for the government must start walking away from their jobs.
6. We must be willing to live without an expanding security system that threatens our libertys.
If We The People are not willing to do these things, and these are just a few examples, our new representatives are not going to put their heads on a chopping block.
How far are We willing to go when it will directly affect us?

Posted on September 20, 2010 at 4:02pmI live in Virginia, and so far I’ve been pleased with Cantor.
That said, he and ALL of the R’s – the new ones that will be coming in after the mid-terms, for sure, but the Old Guard, career politicians in particular, better get it through their thick DC skulls that WE, the People, have LOANED them their “power”, for the sole purpose of representing US (and not the special interests, their personal agendas or the big-money lobbyists) – and WE, the People, will take it away, should they fail us!
The mid-terms are just our first step in what will be a lengthy process of culling the DC herd and beginning the arduous task of restoring America and those principals upon which She was founded.
We have to be in this for the long haul, Brothers and Sisters – and we have to teach the next generation about how this decline of America happened, and how to keep it from ever happening again; and we have to keep pressing the issues and fighting the good fight, and instill the same in our sons and daughters!
I love America, and I pledge my life, my fortune and my sacred honor to defend and restore her. I hope you are with me!
(And, hang on – it’s going to one heck of a ride!!)

He made sure he was standing in the camera shot while Boehner spoke againt the principle of bailing out companies that are too big to fail. Then, Cantor voted for the bailout, and said his only objection was that the Republicans weren’t consulted by the Democrats that crafted that disaster. NOW, Cantor claims he has seen the light. Thank you, I accept your appology. Yet may I point out that it has been our history to have third parties. They have uually sprange up during times like these, and contained members from both sides of the 2 parties in power. These former parties are dinasaures, but not forgotton. From the Federalist Party (c. 1789 – c. 1820) to the Christian Freedom Party (2004) I’m not great in history, but I do not set my standards in sentiment either. Just common sense. One of the reasons for new parties was to purge the decisivness of the Lobbyist, our real enimies, thats why I’m a Jeffersonian. Let the little man, farmer, the little industrialist, innovators, craftsman, and worker have the voice in the matters of government. These are the people that have really built our nation, yet they are a dying bread also due to regulation and dominion over their talents and abbilities. Let Freedom ring!
