Capitol Chaos: Police Drag Protesters From Wis. Statehouse

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Police carried dozens of protesters from a hallway leading to the Wisconsin Assembly on Thursday as Democratic representatives pounded on the locked door of the chamber, demanding to be let in to the room where a vote was scheduled on an explosive bill that would take away public workers’ collective bargaining rights.

At least 100 protesters packed the hallway, pounding drums, while the Democratic representatives gathered in front of the doors, which were opened just before 11:30 a.m. At least 50 protesters were carried out by police, and the building was locked down briefly while officers did a security review.

Rallies against the bill have attracted thousands of protesters to the Capitol over the past several weeks. A vote on it had been held up after 14 Democratic senators fled to Illinois three weeks ago, leaving that chamber one short of the 20 members needed to take up any measures that spend money.

Republicans got around that Wednesday by using an unexpected but simple procedural move to remove all spending measures from Gov. Scott Walker’s collective bargaining legislation and voting to approve it without Democrats present.

About 200 people spent the night in the Capitol in protest over the Senate’s swift and unexpected passage of the bill.

With the Assembly’s vote scheduled for 11 a.m., dozens of Democratic representatives showed up to find the doors to the chamber locked.

“What more egregious, illegal, unethical step can be taken to prevent democracy in Wisconsin?” asked Rep. Donna Seidel, D-Wausau, as she pounded on the door along with her colleagues.

With the Assembly empty, it was not clear where Republican lawmakers were. They showed up and began to file in after the doors were opened.

Protesters packed the Assembly gallery, sitting quietly as lawmakers prepared to vote. In other parts of the building, they called out and shouted as television cameras recorded the scene.

Police began clearing protesters out about an hour before the scheduled vote. Danny Spitzberg, 26, a graduate student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, said officers gave protesters little explanation for why they needed to leave. He walked out on his own after being ordered to leave, but others were dragged through the hall.

“This is grossly undemocratic, it stinks up the whole process,” Spitzberg said.

At a news conference at the Wisconsin State Fair grounds in suburban Milwaukee, Gov. Scott Walker said he was traveling and hadn’t been to the Capitol on Thursday, but he was concerned about problems he had been told were being caused by a handful of protesters. He did not specify what those problems were.

Walker said the judge who has been deciding access to the building also was being apprised of developments, and he asked the protesters to remain peaceful.

“People can have a civil, passionate debate about this. One doesn’t have to offset the other,” Walker said. “It is my hope and my request to the people of the state is that they comply. My worry is frankly people coming in from other states who aren‘t as interested in complying with the civility we’ve shown here in the state, not only lately but throughout out state’s history.”

About 15 protesters stood outside the fairground’s gates chanting “Recall Walker” during the news conference. They held signs, including: “United We Stand.”

Associated Press writers Scott Bauer in Madison and Carrie Antlfinger in Milwaukee contributed to this report.

    The state of Idaho just passed a bill almost identical to the one in Wisconsin. Had I not seen it on the Fox News website I never would have known about it….The Democrats are making a big stink about Wisconsin ONLY because it’s a swing state and Obama has no chance of winning re-election without it. Idaho is always going to vote republican so to hell with them. They couldn’t care less about the rank and file teachers..what they care about is when this bill goes into law, it makes paying union dues optional.

      I wish you liberals would actually do research before you make yourselves look like total fools. Here is the TRUTH about Hitler and unions.

      When Hitler came to power, he moved to correct this hyperinflation while keeping his national socialist views front and center. In 1933, the Nazis disbanded the Weimar unions and replaced them with the new and improved union, the German Labor Front (Deutsche Arbeitsfront, DAF), which was comprised of 2 primary entities, the National Socialist Factory Organization and the National Socialist Trade and Industry Organization. The Nazi’s funded the DAF’s coffers with the Weimar unions’ stockpile of wealth (the existing unions were part of that inflation problem). One of the new unions’ most popular programs was the Strength through Joy (Kraft durch Freude, KdF)) program, which developed the KdF-wagen, that later became the Volkswagen, or People’s Car. The primary goal of Germany’s national socialists was to “create a classless” society. Hitler’s unions were central in this cause. In fact, Hitler gave the unions their long-awaited demand, one that the Weimar unions were never able to pull off, a National Labor Day, May 1, 1933. Looks like the liberals are more in line with Hitler now doesn’t it?

The path for them to initiate violence is almost assured now, and then the administration will have one more excuse to crack down across the board for the ‘intigations’ being caused by the ‘radical tea party and conservatives.’

    Watch for the other hand to come down by the administration; they have been quiet for too long and have to be preparing for some kind of action.

      @NON SEQUITUR

      It was about balancing the budget. If Walker were to allow the unions to keep collective bargaining, the next time their contract came up they would just jack everything right back up to where we are now. So in essence, nothing would have been accomplished. That part of it did not actually have to do with spending (appropriating) NEW money. It has to be done. Trust me the only ones who are going to suffer are the unions and (maybe) some democrats that rely on their campaign contributions. The actual employees will in all likelyhood see their checks get a little bigger, as dues will no longer automatically be taken. I believe the employees, once they have calmed down, will like it.

      Apparently many of you have not read the bill that is being protested. While collective bargaining is a large part of the protest, many are protesting the fact that this bill will give the governor the right to sell off any/all of the state holdings and utilities to private corporartions with no bid. It also eliminates all LGA to cities and townships. Which I am guessing most of you really don’t care about, except when it is your road that doesn’t get plowed, or you are stuck in traffic ’cause there is no one to fix the trafic lights, or God forbid a tragedy occurs because there is no longer any funding to public safety. Lets not forget about the dumbing down of our children, when there is no more money going to the school districts. But wait i forgot Teachers are all “lazy slobs” that only work 9 months out the year for a ludicrous amount of money. We would be so much better off privatizing schools so that only the truly priviledged can be educated while the rest of who actually work for a living rather than sit around waiting to cash in on our dividend checks get dumber by the day. Welcome to the future of the right wing America, a third world nation!

      GONESURFING,

      Agree with you that the protesters need to be tossed out, those who are causing problems, and if they fail to do as lawfully directed by police, then arrest and charge them with public disturbance.

      The one part I have to wonder about now is that with the protests now starting in Saudi Arabia and being met with force there by Saud security forces, is how much of a distraction the administration will make this into now, to let the middle east burn.

      I dont understand how they had the place on lock down then were “rushed” after the bill got through lat night? How do police just let them in in the first place if the place was to be locked down? Since when do police just let ppl force their way in somewhere?

      Anyway every single one of them should be locked up. If this was the TEA Party the socialists would have called in the National… no Special Forces to remove them. The double standard is disgusting, Id like to hear an explanation from Madison LEO on this.

      Is everyone taking note of SDS, SEIU etc not hiding their participation in this “siege”? Trumka called up the goon squad late last night we can all be sure of. When the assembly finally passes this today do not be surprised on what happens next b/c “..its all part of the plan”.

      @Nothing

      Problem is…they are all chanting “this is what democracy looks like”…yes…they are right and that is why we are in a REPUBLIC…seems like UW should educate their students better. Mob rule is not governance..it is tyranny…
      too bad they didn’t pay more attention though…that chant is the same chant used by the Socialist aggitator from the video last week…this is the SDS and Socialist and Communist stirring up trouble…notice that most of the people aren’t chanting….the PINKO’s bring in their bull horn and start chanting and yelling giving the WI citizens a bad name…too bad the Unions are the ones bussing in the PINKO’s to begin with….wish the rank and file union workers would pull their heads out and see that…

      How is making a separate anti-union bill illegal? if they would have just made it a bill right off the bat, there wouldn’t have been a delay. It would have just been voted on and approved, with or without the absent Democratic representatives.

      How ironical that the graduate student complained that being removed from the gallery during the vote “stinks up the whole process”. That is like the pot calling the kettle black. These out-of-control protesters have stunk up the statehouse for weeks with their unruly behavior. It is they who need to be fumigated.
