‘Captain America’ Movie Will Keep Name Around the World Except in These Countries…

Editor’s note: this is a follow-up report to our original story in January.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Captain America will keep its patriotic full title in most of the world when the superhero adventure hits the big-screen.
(Read our original story on the name change)
Paramount Pictures and Marvel Studios gave distributors around the world the option of shortening the title of “Captain America: The First Avenger“ to simply ”The First Avenger,” out of concern about anti-American sentiment.
But the only countries that took them up on it were Russia, Ukraine and South Korea.
In other territories, the movie will go out with the full title, a sign that the brand value of the Marvel Comics hero trumps any potential anti-U.S. feelings in some parts of the world.
Movie titles often are changed in foreign countries for cultural reasons or because the original names don’t translate well. In French-speaking countries, “The Hangover” and its sequel were titled “Very Bad Trip.”
Starring Chris Evans as the patriotic super-soldier, “Captain America” opens in U.S. theaters July 22.

Posted on July 6, 2011 at 7:57amI’ve been to each of the mentioned countries that will change the title. Russia I wasn’t at all surprised because of the Anti-Americanism I experienced there. The Ukraine was a mild surprise but South Korea really took me aback because of how they’ve emulated western culture more than any Asian country. I suppose much of it comes from the younger generation because when I was stationed there during the late 80′s there was more appreciation for us being there to help protect their country from a possible North Korean invasion. I realize we have strategic interests in many parts of the world but all of this Anti-Americanism has reached new heights.

Posted on July 6, 2011 at 4:22amDon’t care how they are trying to spin it now. I am still offended by Marvels anti- American sentiments. Especially when they had Cap in a recent comic calling the TEA Party Racist. I don’t think so Marvel not buying it. If Cap was really being portrayed as an American he would be marching with the TEA Party and trying to uphold the constitution. He would be slapping Obummer and most of congress upside the head with it.

Really you dont want to offend other countries with a MOVIE TITLE? This is PC on steroids… if they want to see the movie then run it by the title it was made under. Im curious since it will be translated how he will be referred to in the movie? Ok fine dont want to call it Capt America but that is the characters name was that changed too? Has his name been translated over as First Avenger?
Not surprising Russia would do it, the Cold War may have ended to most of the world but with Putin in play its still on IMO. As for S Korea maybe they should be reminded who helped bail them out a few years back; countless Capt. Americas who died for their independence!!

Aren’t these countries suppose to be our allies, maybe if Obama was more of a leader they wouldn’t feel they needed to do this. Ukraine and S. Korea have always been good friends to the US, maybe not any more.
