This was most likely one of the cash for clunker cars that had been cut apart and put back together. Look at the breaks.

I hope this guy will be put away for a long time. These kind of chases always make me angry because an innocent person could have been killed.

Of course, it’s never the criminal!

That idiot should be forced to repair the car himself and then pay out of pocket for the damages to the tree, the police labor, gas, etc… the ambulance ride, the hospital stay, the gas for the helicopter footage and everything else. He should then be sent to jail and pay his debt and pay for the jail time for doing what he did. It‘s amazing that this idiot didn’t get hurt.

I’ll bet that car was previously wrecked and repaired by grafting on a new front or rear end.

No, I don’t think structural damage like that could pass inspection. Also, vehicles breaking in two is not as uncommon as one might think. They are not built to do so, but when people are speeding and hit immoveable objects, the force of the crash will go somewhere.

Glad they caught the bastard and he’s sitting in jail. Now onto some real news. One American citizen killed in Mexico by the Mexican military. O B A M A says nothing about it and chooses to talk about Michael Vick. Defense of the nation is one of our presidents priority, not sports. One term president I keep saying as we get closer to 2012.

Why is it that a$$ holes like this, walk away with just a few scratches and people just trying to get home from where ever, get T-boned by some drunk idiot and end up dead. Now we’ll have to foot the bill, while this moron gets three squares a day and free lodging. A shamed he didn’t just die and save the taxpayers some money.

Are you kidding? Where was the structural integrity of the vehicle? Cars are not supposed to be designed to break apart in a collision. Furthermore, it breaking in two didn’t add to the survivability of the idiot hijacker, it only made it a news story.

If there were passengers in the back seat, they wouldn’t have survived.

Now that is what I call a totaled car!! The last one I totaled, you could barely tell it was damaged, except for the $3000 airbags going off.(which makes it illegal to drive) It was perfectly drivable and pre-airbag someone might have driven it with the slightly displaced bumper. Needless to say, I fixed my 12 year old show room quality car, despite it being totaled.

Are cars designed to split apart in a crash, Is it some kind of purposeful safety feature?
Seems strange to me that they cannot hold together.

What, the driver has minor injurys? I guess your not allowed to smoke dope and drink during lunch break at the Honda plant, unlike the GM plant. Probably not protected by a union. Well done Honda. Saved a life, not sure it was the right life.

Sadly, we had this happen in our town about eight or so years ago (minus the car jacking0. The 17 year old driver was killed, the front portion of the car had a telephone pole embedded in it and the rear portion of the car landed across the street on someone’s front lawn. Our son, who had been cogitating to get his license, happened to be with me when we went to drop off our car at the garage for some work. The mangled remains of the vehicle were in our mechanic’s back lot. That was a BIG reality check for my son and two other pals and I can say that they are all responsible drivers now.

That driver’s family should be thanking God that he is still around to tell the story and not have to have a skate park named in his memory, like the family from our town did.

Waste of a good car; imagine what he will tell a judge “Your honor, the manufacturer of the car made it to split in half…” I can see an attorney just using that defense, stupidly of course, in a attempt to shift the blame away from his client.

      @ TAKOUSHI:
I have seen 2 such incidents in my years in EMS. The first was when the car hit a large power pole and split in two. The driver was ejected from the vehicle, landed on his feet, rolled on the ground, got up and dusted himself off. He received a few scrapes and bruises.

The second was recently. This time the car hit a tree on the passenger side and the passenger suffered serious injuries. The driver received only minor injuries.

In both cases, the car wound up in two pieces. In both cases excessive speed and reckless driving were the cause. I hope this dude learned that evading the police can be a one way street to the morgue. He was lucky this time.

they really should show “bad accidents” to kids getting their driver licenses. Ive learned my lessons with close calls at moderate speeds, luckily never had issues at 100+. Havent driven above 75-80(highway) in a LONG time.

The only sad part of this story is how little pain the driver got out of his joy-ride. For what he did I was hoping for at least 2 missing arms and a collapsed lung.

In case you are wondering… yes, I have a very low tolerance for people that break the law.
