Carbon Monoxide Kills Five Teens Celebrating Birthday at Miami MotelHIALEAH, Fla. (AP) — Five young men celebrating a birthday likely died due to carbon monoxide from a car they left running in a garage under their South Florida motel room, investigators said Tuesday.

A maid called authorities Monday after seeing people unconscious through a window. Police spokesman Carl Zogby said the teenagers’ deaths appear to be accidental, but that the Miami Dade Medical Examiner is investigating the cause.

In a 911 call, the maid described a strong smell of gasoline and said she was concerned because the five young men appeared unconscious. The maid told the emergency dispatcher in Spanish that she opened the door and called out “hello” and got no response.

“They’re all there, and they don’t respond,” she said. “They’re sprawled on the floor. I haven’t wanted to touch them. I’m scared.”

A car used by the group was found running in a closed garage underneath the room. Friends told The Miami Herald the car had needed a jump-start earlier and could have been left running to keep the battery charged. A door to a staircase up to the room had been left open, and high levels of carbon monoxide were found inside.

The maid described the smell of gasoline as horrible. “It’s a terrible stench,” she told the dispatcher.

Authorities identified the dead as Miami residents Juchen C. Marctial, 19, Peterson Nazon, 17, Jonas Antenor, 17, Jean Pierre Ferdinand, 16, and Evans Charles, 19.

The group rented the room Sunday around 9 p.m. to celebrate one of the teens’ 19th birthday.

Officials found no alcohol, drugs or suspicious items in the room.

    I showed this one to my two sons, 19 and 14….making sure they understood that just because you are a teenager who thinks they know everything there is to know….you are not as smart as you think you are. What were these brainiacs thinking????? Although I am sorrowful for the parents….Once again the gene pool is cleansed.

      There is nothing in a PS3 or XBOX that can kill someone that way, so they would have never seen it before, the text books for science class are still in their wrappers, and mom and dad were to busy to explain to these kids about unseen dangers in the world.

      VIE_EN_RAS…what this world needs is one less elitist speller without an original thought or comment. Yeah, some people don’t use tense or spell words or use them properly; I know a lot of people like that. Many I would trust my lives with. You might note in the future that “spell check” does not catch grammar usage errors but checks spelling…..duh. Form over function often leads to a boat that looks great but takes on water like a sieve. Piss off.

      Almost as sad as the loss of human life, is the disregard for human life as exhibited by statements on this thread and the political remarks by an apparently uneducated, uninformed, misguided and blind liberal. I don’t know anything about these boys and I dare say that few if anyone on this board does. We do know that they were human beings and made a fatal mistake. They have families who love them, warts and all, and regardless of their stupid mistake, don’t deserve this kind of rhetoric from anyone. I’ve made stupid mistakes and I’ll call you a liar if you deny that you have too. Our mistakes just weren’t fatal. As for the liberal – you and your kind do not have the market cornered on compassion and this discussion had no place for your political remark.       I don’t agree with everything that the Tea Partyers espouse, but like the Tea Partyers and 65% of Americans, I do agree with them that this country is and has been headed down the wrong road. I put Republican, Conservative, Democrat, and Liberal far down the list when I describe what I am. I am first a Christian followed by being an American and then the last thing is party affiliation or a political label. A great problem in this country is that people of all political parties are blind to the faults of their own political party and form their beliefs based on what Ann Coulter, Hannity, Ed Schultz, Maddow, and Olbermann tell them to believe. Some folks even believe that some of these people are “News Reporters” and if you are one who believes that fairy tale, you are truly misguided. Each one expresses an extremely biased opinion and nothing more

      This is a sad occurence and having had a loved one commit suicide this way it opens an old wound. It does make one wonder what their upbringing involved. Parental dependence on the public school to teach their children? The fact that no alcohol or drugs were found is suspicious. Why the motel room? Why not party at home if you have nothing to hide? Were they not from the area? I know the police will probably not put much effort into investigating this but …..

      With an ever-increasing expansion in this society between those in the know and those completely clueless spells more government care down the road for these imbeciles, so much more so than today, the productive folks are going to be seriously subsidizing the slugs.

      How anybody with even a modicum of intelligence cannot see what‘s going on is something that will haunt me until I’m 6 feet under. Is that these people do understand and don’t want to face the short-term pain solutions would bring, or do some people actually believe that some people are idiots and there’s no amount of rearing or instructing that can fix them???

      They are young kids who had a tragic lapse in judgement, I had a friend once whose father accidentally left the car running in the garage and nearly killed the whole family. Fortunately they survived but these things do happen and I wouldn’t be so quick to pass judgement. It is heartbreaking whatever the case.

      That has already been done in Calif. It is unlawful to idle your car over 3 minutes. Same for big trucks even while sleeping in the sleeper and no regard to the outside temperature. (115 in summer or -20 in winter)
