Cardinal Dolan Calls Obama‘s Attempt to Define ’Ministry’: ‘Radical,’ & ‘Dramatically Intrusive’

It’s been a rough few months for relations between the Obama administration and the Catholic Church. The contraceptive mandate has taken already strained relations to new depths, as Catholic leaders have openly lamented the government’s demand that they violate conscience to fall in line with new health care regulations. In an interview with The Wall Street Journal’s James Taranto, Cardinal Timothy Dolan held little back.

Cardinal Timothy Dolan, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.

Dolan, who met with Obama back in Nov. 2011, claims that the president promised to respect the Catholic Church’s right to conscience. Following this conversation, the archbishop of New York claims that he and other leaders were dumbfounded to find out that the mandate would still stand.

“So you can imagine the chagrin when he called me at the end of January to say that the mandates remain in place and that there would be no substantive change, and that the only thing that he could offer me was that we would have until August,” Dolan explained. “I said, ‘Mr. President, I appreciate the call. Are you saying now that we have until August to introduce to you continual concerns that might trigger a substantive mitigation in these mandates?’ He said, ‘No, the mandates remain. We‘re more or less giving you this time to find out how you’re going to be able to comply.’”

Dolan says he was quick to tell Obama that the Catholic Church would not need any extra time, as it would be “unable to comply” at any time due to religious limitations. Overall, Dolan dubs the mandate as “morally toxic.”

“We find it completely unswallowable, both as Catholics and mostly as Americans, that a bureau of the American government would take it upon itself to define ‘ministry,’” he continued. “We would find that to be — we‘ve used the words ’radical,‘ ’unprecedented‘ and ’dramatically intrusive.’”

As for the argument that many, like House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, have offered — that many Catholics don’t observe official teachings on social issues — Dolan weighed in with honesty on the matter. When asked if the Church has a problem conveying its moral principles to its adherents, the cardinal admitted, with a laugh, “Do we ever!”

“I’m not afraid to admit that we have an internal catechetical challenge—a towering one—in convincing our own people of the moral beauty and coherence of what we teach. That’s a biggie,” he said. ”[Catholic leaders] have gotten gun-shy…in speaking with any amount of cogency on chastity and sexual morality.”

      I’ve always thought Dolan was a Progressive, but maybe he’s getting it handed back to him.

      In any case, it sure sounds like Dolan just told the President, “I WILL NOT COMPLY.”

      Dolan and the Roman Catholic clergy in general forced me to embrace orthodox Catholicism. The Roman Catholic church has become a progressive joke. Why hasn’t Nancy Pelosi and her ilk been excommunicated?

      The public politicians who try to push and foster abortions as a ‘fine to do’, ie. not trying to keep them to as little to none as possible, are automatically excommunicated by their own actions. As Catholics we are bound by a dogma consisting of the ‘freedom’ of ‘not being able to condemn anyone’. Yet we can see a wrong if it is obvious. If we are not free of ‘mortal sin’, and receive Communion, we do even more damage to our soul. God knows the heart.

      Pelosi may actually be ‘insane’. If she isn’t insane and is receiving Holy Communion, with what we see, she is excommunicated ‘by her own hand’, so to speak. I think Sebelius was refused. Something went on for a year with her Bishop. I don’t think she is receiving Holy Communion. Look it up. I don’t want to slander. She certainly has a stone face. Things may get more public with the new ‘changes’ the president is doing for our own good.

      We ‘all’ won’t get away with a thing. If we get to Heaven, we do have to jump into the ‘Consuming Fire’ Who is ‘God’. It’s going to more than sting. Love your enemies. The sting won’t be as bad in that way. Besides, Hate clouds your judgement.

      You can e-mail Cardinal Dolan. communications@archny.org. I did on March 7. It was a fairly long e-mail reminding him of Pastor Martin Niemoller (Nazi prisoner 1938-1945)…1st they came for the …then they came for me…. and gave him the website for Agenda 21 and listed some of the more terrifying objectives of what the world’s elite has planned. I mentioned losing Breitbart and his Righteous Indignation. A government big enough to give you anything you want is strong enough to take everything you have. I implored him to be outspoken and get involved for all churches our country in the name of Jesus himself, WAKE UP!! I also quoted Jude 1. The letter makes more sense that this rambling…

      Good post. I agree totally. Obama manages to skate by on lies he tells. Dolan should have seen through the lies from the beginning. Obama had no intention of allowing religious freedom and lied to move it along. I do believe they had that whole contraception issue ready to unleash when the realization came to be. People should not be dumbfounded but should be aware of who our President really is and what his real motives and intentions are. He has been lying about everything. That healthcare bill was not about lowering costs or covering more people but was about controlling us. They knew there would be backlash and were prepared to do whatever it took. They lied and they tried to stretched it out to pull the wool over everyone’s eyes. AMERICANS need to WAKE UP. We need massive tea party patriots.

      This looks like another case for the SCOTUS to interpret the constitution. How can the government tell a church to violate its core ethics. Thats interferance in the docterine of ther church sounds like another violation of the consticution ay Obumbler and his tsars.

    The Cardinal is completely correct. It doesn’t matter a bit if 100% of Catholics used contraceptives, (which is not even close), it is the Teaching of the Catholic Faith. All Catholics are certainly not Mother Theresa. ie. Mother Theresa is an example of one who followed the Catholic Teaching as it is.

    Obama, with his ‘friends’, are trying to kill Christianity. Marx is not Christian. He had no ‘room’ in his head for God, much less his heart. Jeremiah Wright is Jeremiah Wrong. These marxists are quick to cut. First the rug under Christianity, eventually the neck. President Obama claims to know the Catholic Faith. Why? Because of Marx? Pelosi? Sebelius? Biden? Reid? The new Kennedy(s)?

    That this is about contraceptives is crap! About womens’ medical rights? Crap! Securing Religious Freedom? Crap. They must be on a total Laxitive/Bran diet!? This is and was Bull**** from the get-go.

    Anyone who doesn’t recognize this as the First Chip away from RF in America, is either blind in mind, self-ish, or stupid. Or all 3.

    Obama wants a marxist nation, not under God, divisible, with their idea of liberty and justice for all. And…it all starts with getting rid of Religious Freedom. They all know it.

      I think he finds it amusing that Pelosi would think that she is speaking for all Catholics and what they think in societal terms that don‘t concur with the church’s teachings.

      I think this says a whole lot more on the audaciousness of the liberals and their thinking.

      Agreed Jakartaman. I‘ve been wondering why the Catholic Church hasn’t been taking these idiots to the cleaners for years. I know that one of the problems is that the churches are prevented from speaking about politics as part of their tax exempt status, but that tax exempt status rule should be challenged in court because it is decidedly unconstitutional because it restricts the ability of the pastor/minister/ priest’s ability to exercise their beliefs. WHICH IS A VIOLATION of the 1st Amendment, unlike someone putting up a cross or a nativity scene on public land. The former DEFINITELY violates the section of the 1st amendment that says “or restrict the free exercise thereof” while the latter most certainly does not “establish a religion”.

    It seems to me all men are servants, and servants can not require a debt of another servant, because all men work for God. And if men can not forgive other men those trespasses, then why should God who is above men forgive men their trespasses? Men are not worth very much so I suppose God will require an interest payments to the tune of billions.
