Cardinal Dolan: Obama Admin Lectured Bishops to Listen to ‘Enlightened’ Voices in Private Mtg.

Cardinal Dolan Pens Letter Alleging Obama Admin Lectured on Church Teaching

Over the past week, the media firestorm surrounding Georgetown law student Sandra Fluke and Rush Limbaugh has eclipsed the larger issue of religious liberty that stands at the forefront of the contraception mandate.

With the distracting debate raging, Fluke has received the majority of the media attention surrounding the subject. New developments in the faith world, unfortunately, have gone unnoticed. Of particular note is a public letter that was penned on March 2 by Cardinal Timothy Dolan (also president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops).

The letter recaps a bizarre conversation U.S. Conference staff recently had with White House officials regarding the mandate. In fact, Dolan seems to allege that government officials lectured Catholic leaders about church teaching, writing:

At a recent meeting between staff of the bishops’ conference and the White House staff, our staff members asked directly whether the broader concerns of religious freedom—that is, revisiting the straight-jacketing mandates, or broadening the maligned exemption—are all off the table. They were informed that they are.  So much for “working out the wrinkles.”  Instead, they advised the bishops’ conference that we should listen to the “enlightened” voices of accommodation, such as the recent, hardly surprising yet terribly unfortunate editorial in America.  The White House seems to think we bishops simply do not know or understand Catholic teaching and so, taking a cue from its own definition of religious freedom, now has nominated its own handpicked official Catholic teachers.

Cardinal Timothy Dolan, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops

Dolan went on to explain that this situation is “hardly partisan” and that church officials will continue to meet with Republicans and Democrats, alike, to address the issue of religious freedom.

“But as we do so, we cannot rely on off the record promises of fixes without deadlines and without assurances of proposals that will concretely address the concerns in a manner that does not conflict with our principles and teaching,” he continued.

In the letter, the archbishop of New York went on to say that opponents have changed the debate to focus on women’s rights rather than religious freedom. “We will not let this deception stand,” he proclaimed. Dolan mentions both Congress and the courts as possible avenues to both protect and restore religious freedom. Despite this “light” that could be at the end of the proverbial tunnel, he warns that Catholics should “prepare for tough times.” He continues:

Brothers, we know so very well that religious freedom is our heritage, our legacy and our firm belief, both as loyal Catholics and Americans. There have been many threats to religious freedom over the decades and years, but these often came from without. This one sadly comes from within. As our ancestors did with previous threats, we will tirelessly defend the timeless and enduring truth of religious freedom.

Dolan concluded the letter by saying that he looks forward to opportunities in the near future to discuss the issue of religious freedom in more detail. You can read his letter in its entirety here.

Catholic Hospitals should simply stop taking Gov’t money. When they refuse Medicare or Medicaid patients and have to lay off employees and shut down whole wings of the hospitals, we’ll see how the feds deal wth the loss of care and how they will ration health care at that point. The Obama administration will not change their stance and I don’t see any Congresspersons or Senators standing up against them.

Refusing Medicare or Medicaid patients won’t work and is not the answer. I do know that if they force the Catholic Hospitals to cover abortions or force some doctors to commit abortions that the hospitals will shut down completely and some doctors will go into other jobs or ventures. The Catholic hospitals do alot of charity and good for our country. I do think Obama wants this…to force a government takeover of everything and that they will not stop. Obama’s marketing team think they are so clever with wording things to sell them to the public. Hopefully we will make it to the next election and vote Mr. Fundamental Change out of office and all that support him and his policies!

Take their religion away and they only have the government to cling to as next will be your guns. The entire Obama Care Bill is geared to breaking down all the systems and going on government health care and they are in control of your life. The American people better start reading the bill. Catholic Hospitals should just refuse to file the Medicare and Medicaid forms…after all…the Catholic Church is the largest charitable organization in the world..they do more for the poor, infirmed, and down trodden than ANY nation, group, or charity.

My message to the Catholic Church, Hospitals, and Universities.. RELY ON GOD, TRUST IN CHRIST and stop taking ANY form of government funding. This sounds like you don’t get the issues. 1st, in China the Govt is telling the Church Bishops what to say or they end up in Jail. How is this different with Obama and his Admin telling the Catholic Church what to say. 2nd. there are 2 issues here. One is Religious Freedom. Aparently you don’t realize that Glenn is on our side and told everyone to call their Congress person and say “we are all Catholic. the Govt cannot tell a Church or Christian what they have to pay for that is against their religion. 2nd issue, when did the govt get the right to tell a private business what they have to pay for. except for taxes, what a privite business provides for it’s employees is not the Govt business. Health Care is a benefit the employers can chose to provide or not and that includes the Catholic church and Catholic Businesspeople or any business person for that matter. 3rd. the people employed by the church can go find another job if they don’t like the benefits provided by that particular employer. Oh by the way, the only money the Catholic Hospitals take from the Govt is to cover the people who come in and can’t pay, ie. medicade people and others that have no money. You need to investigate this whole issue further.

Hospitals have a legal obligation to treat patients. Given that mandate, and the fact that many patients do not have the means to pay for services, accepting government payment is not inappropriate nor especially obligatory since the payer made the law to begin with.

In other words, religious freedom does not end with mandatory governmental behavior.

He should be impeached for not upholding the oath of the office of president!
Instead of trying to remove this traitor our congress acts like they have no say in what he does!
If I were a Congressman or Senator I would make so much noise that nothing would get done until he was gone.

Everybody had better “grow a pair” and contact your senators and congress people on this (and other) issues. If they are not standing up against Obama’s megalamaniacal, egotistical powergrab of everything, they need to be voted OUT of office. That needs to be made clear to these folks who earn 2-4X what the average American earns and makes a career out of politics. Our time window is very, very limited and, of course, this will only work if there is an election (which I still think will be suspended or cancelled due to some ‘event’ that will happen).

Learn the policies of the left that ARE WORKING! Be in their face, shout them down if necessary, and make them aware that WE THE PEOPLE will fight if need be. While we don’t want to stoop to these tactics, there comes a time when we had better do whatever we can else we may never get another chance!

Try right clicking on it and curing it. Doesn’t help much with definition or grammatical use but it is a start.

As an employee at a Catholic hospital I must point out that by stopping services to Medicare patients, it would not be the government that got hurt: it would be the patients. This administration is trying to take down all successful organizations in our society and will stop at nothing to do it. People in the way? Just take away any power they have and put fear into their hearts, that way the FEMA and the TSA and all the other acronyms can just walk in and put us all into subjection. I am not Catholic but for all who love liberty, get ready to defend your religious freedoms! The “separation of church and state” had to do with keeping the government out of our churches, NOT church out of government. The obama administration is trying to take over everything and put us back to being a nation controlled by the government, like the one we we left Britain to seek freedom from. Stand up now and fight for your liberty or you will soon be unable to do so. VOTE!!!! and if that doesn’t work it will be time to dump some “tea”.

ROSIE1000 it’s Alinsky 101 and Obama taught it as a “community organizer”. Overburden the system. Throw so much at it that it stalls or shuts down. This is what Obama’s doing to the church in order to bring it under the government heel. He’d love to see Catholic Hospitals shut down then he (or an ordained successor) would open up democrat allies/surrogates or indeed government hospitals in their place. You think this is conjecture? Section 6001 of Obamacare prohibits any new Physician Owned hospitals from being built or expanded beginning 2011 or they will not be paid Medicare for treatments. Who lobbied for this to be in Obamacare? The AHA..American Hospital Assoc. (read: heavily unionized). They wanted the competition taken out and Reid, Pelosi and Obama happily obliged.
What a superlative idea! Let’s throw thousands of construction workers out of work and make it harder to access quality medical care at the same time.

The issue has never been about taking Government money in fact it has never been money period. The issue is the intrusion of Government into Religious Teachings. It doesn’t even matter that the fight has zeroed in on the Catholic Church, it matters that it has come up at all. Where do you think this kind of action will end? There has been a concerted effort to diminish the Christian Teachings within the United States particularly and around the world in general. Whether this is part of a bigger conspiracy or not is a completely different issue however. I don’t see a conspiracy here; I just see a President and his lackey trying to control something that he has absolutely no right to control. It is a control issue with him, but a religious issue for everybody else. If non-Catholics don’t see this as a problem then they are just as blind as the Jews were before Hitler’s troops came after them. (By the way — that is not calling anybody a Nazi. It is simply pointing out a fact.)

GOD’S ISRAEL…Bingo! The austrian corporal did exactly that in Germany in the 1930′s. He used the church to manipulate the German people that were hesistant to buy into his “Aryan” vision. Exactly…what better way to control those not already in your pocket than subvert their religion to your whims? When we say “your whims” we’re speaking in a broad sense. Certainly it pertains to Barack Obama himself but also to any statist successors that follow him. He grew up marinated in leftist and radical thought. He sought out radicals in high school in college by his own admission. As an adult, the very brief time he practiced law he represented non-profits then became a “community organizer”. A trouble stirrer for leftism. He knows institutions like the church must be subverted to the will of the government in order for the ideology he embraces to gain strength and permanence. This is why Kathleen Sebelius never consulted with legal counsel as to the constitutionality of demanding that religious groups pay for abortions and contraceptives in Obamacare. The constitution is also a barrier to the left’s goals. We’ve seen the left trying very hard to devalue the constitution. Obama has bemoaned it’s constraints on him. Make no mistake, it’s a war on conscience being waged by the left right now and Obama is their point man.

I think that this is Obama’s real purpose: He is fording the Church to shut down their hospitals and abandon the healthcare mission which has long been a part of the Church, and is the oldest in the world, in order that he/the government can take over these institutions.

But, beyond that, receiving government payments for services rendered is not really ‘accepting government money’, and that certainly does not give the government the right to dictate to the receiving institution.

We cannot back down on this. Our bishops are finally regaining the spines they lost 40 years ago. I, for one, am willing to fight to the death in defense of my Catholic faith, and for the rights of other faiths which are also at risk. This is an unprecedented attack from the government in our history, and IT MUST NOT STAND!

      Appleannie,

Well said. As Obama is pro-abortion, the Catholic Church should always have been absolutely against him. Instead, the American bishops chose to dance with the devil. Now they don’t like the tune, but they chose him rather than God. Who can blame Obama for taking the place the bishops granted him?
If they allow this, they are giving Obama the place of the Pope, and it amounts to a schismatic act. It is the same thing that separates the Chinese Church, and the Anglican Church, who put the leader of their country above the Pope. Hopefully its not too late to correct your error, and act like vicars of Christ and not silly effeminate appeasers.

The Fed will do what they always do, they will isolate and demonize (Alinsky 101) Right now the Catholic church is being characterized as not caring about womens health for opposing abortion, partial birth abortion and letting babies die when they survive botched abortions. Only the prince of all lies could convince people that a mother spreading her legs and letting someone reach inside her womb and kill her baby while it is safe inside her body is a good thing to do and anyone who tries to prevent it from happening doesn’t care about her or her health. What about her mental and emotional health? What about going to bed that night knowing that her defenseless little baby was brutally murdered inside her body you while she lay there and did nothing to stop it? What about the nightmares that many women have following an abortion because they know that they willingly murdered their own baby when they could have easily given it up for adoption? If I placed a kitten into a plastic bag and then used a reciprocating saw to cut it into little pieces and then sucked the bloody remains into a trash bag and threw it in my trash I would be thrown in jail for torturing and killing an defenseless animal. If I poured water on a terrorists face I would be charged with torture but if I reach into a woman’s womb and saw her baby to pieces and throw it in the trash I care about her health and I can make a very good living doing it. Lord Have Mercy on us……

      Simple solution.
      1. On Monday shut down all Catholic schools and send all students to the nearest public school for education.
      2. On Tuesday shut down all Catholic hospitals and send all patients to the nearest hospitals for care.
      3. On Wednesday shut down all Catholis charties and tell those in need to go to their nearest public assistance office.
      4. On Thursday the President says Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa.
      5. On Friday the country forgives and returns to normal, but will never forget the incredible insult .
      6. In November the devil is sent packing.

Glen is right, “We are all Catholic Now.” Now it is a mandate to a faith group, to stamp out social service outside of the almighty government. What’s next? Public education is teaching homosexuality, promiscuous sex. They are tampering with marriage. I don’t know what is going on in military barracks. Next it will be guns, and Romney is not firm on his convictions. Some things are non-negotiable.
As stated by Dr. Thomas Sowell, “If we don’t get this election right we can kiss our constitution good bye.” Surely we don’t want our legacy to be, “The generation that sat on the hands while America’s liberty was destroyed.” People are dying all over the world for freedom.
The question is, do we have the gumption to stand up for our families, our faith and our country and form an army of volunteers to properly equip our nominees? We MUST get a nominees that are strong on “Freedom of Religion/ and Life.” (Santorum/ Gingrich) If we don’t get those two right, we cannot expect our Lord to get behind us. Let’s back them both; let’s pray like the dickens; and may the best man win.
      1. Please contact to your Pastors, Ministers, Rabbis, as well as college and university campus faith Groups this week and get it into the bulletin ASAP. Don’t forget seminaries. Put out URGENT calls to ALL to get involved in the “FREEDOM FIGHTERS 2012 CAMPAIGN.” In WWII, there were 18 people supplying every soldier with what they needed in the fro

As Americans we can’t let Obama abuse his powers to insight trouble between the government and the church. Catholics aren’t the only Christian Church or organization that is going after Obama on this issue. We need stronger Senators and Congressmen that will stand up to Obamas bullying. Obama is exercising the rights of a Dictator and needs to be stopped and stopped right now!! In the end we will win because Obamas stay at the Whitehouse will be short and everything he did will be erased and hopefully he will be prosecuted.

The Catholic hospitals won’t do that because they are businesses like any other businesses. The hospitals receive charity but they are not really charities themselves. If they think they can run without government aid, let them try. If they want to go broke, let them. In the end there are a whole lot of other groups both public and private, profit and non-profit that would like to buy those hospitals and educational institutions. Kaplan University could probably run Notre Dame and Georgetown better than the Church does now, make a profit, and pay some taxes. One of the private hospital corporations could do the same for some of the Catholic hospitals. It would be a good thing if it were to happen.

No One Can Change A Prophecy.

What is happening today was prophesied in the Bible, Koran, and other scriptures. A prophecy is just a prediction of the future that is identified by something man does. God did not have satan come to power, it was the Evil of mankind that brought him to power. We have been told that when Israel ends, God will return. I think the angels have begun packing God’s luggage and charging up the batteries on their LASER SWORDS and nuclear warheads.

Liberals have re-created God in their own image and reinvented Christianity. To Liberals Human Beings (you and me) are nothing more than carbon emitters that are sucking up natural resources and melting the ice caps. Remember when Obama accused people of clinging to God and Guns? Obama envisions a utopia where everyone clings to the Government and it’s entitlements in exchange for Liberty. When do they decide to act. When it will cost them money with an expanded insurance policy ! Catholic church and for which the Vatican has been warning them about for years.ou want birth control, keep your legs crossed. It’s called will power. But no, it became OK for single women to get pregnant and give birth. So now we have a huge segment of our population who were raised by single women while the males went off and impregnated even more single women. We also have a larger segment of our population hooked on illegal and legal drugs and taking up cell space for which we taxpaying Americans pay dearly for. Anybody but Obama, 2012.

Should I have to leave where I have over 20 years invested because our ownership changed? Why is the church allowed to impose their belief system on me? Especially from an organization that hid pedophilia among it’s members for years, and they want to preach morals to me? Besides, I grew up catholic, their members use both control, over 90% of them, so it‘s hypocritical to say it’s against our belief system when their own members don’t follow it. Threaten their tax exempt status since they want to become political, see how quickly they will fold on their deep belief system.

And who is to say that medical treatment is always better? How about Blood letting a proven medical practice until it was shown to be killing the very people it was supposed to help. How about my mother in law who was prescribed a specific medication that now has a class action lawsuit before the supreme court for the damages it inflicted on the patients up to an including death. How about the medically backed health diets that cause more damage to the body then years of bad habits(Atkins, Carbs etc.) How many surgical mistakes are made in the hospitals that are not reported or pursued in a law suit. How about corruption in the medical field. If the Church was fighting because the government told them they could NOT offer birth control in their insurance packages, would you still think they should lose tax exempt status for being “political”?

Businesses are bought & sold all the time. New owners can make changes in any area they choose to…including insurance coverage. Each employee makes the decision to continue working under the new ownership or seek employment elsewhere. The only person “forcing” you to leave your job is you. You have the right to quit for any reason at anytime. It doesn’t matter if you’ve worked there for 20 years or 20 days. If you don’t like it, leave. If you want to stay, then stay. It’s as simple as that.

I don’t see anyone “preaching” morals at you. I don’t see anyone saying “if you work here, you can’t use birth control”. The church is not “imposing their beliefs” on you. They are operating their business as they choose to.

It really doesn’t matter how many Catholics use birth control. As individuals they have the choice to go against the teachings of their religion. You have the freedom to support or not to support the beliefs, practices, theories & behaviors of anything or anyone you choose…including the Catholic Church. But personal opinions don’t give you or anyone else the right to dictate how someone operates their business.

Some are affiliated with or run by churches or other religious groups, some are run by groups such as the Shriners. Some are run by other private entities. Others are run by public (governmental) entities. There is no one best way to do it. But they are secular institutions in themselves, regardless of who owns them. They should all follow our secular laws.

Some people say that you should find a different job if you do not like working for a church owned hospital. I would say, if the church refuses to run a hospital (or a school or whatever) according to the laws, it should lose the right to own that hospital and be forced to sell out. I suspect that there were other bidders for your hospital. Or there could have been. The church bought your hospital not out of an act of charity but because it feels it can make money by owning it. Others could make money by owning it. Though I tend to favor non-profits, if HCA bought your hospital, then it would pay some taxes to the local community and probably deliver care more efficiently. Also, it would follow the laws (or at least it would not claim exemption from the laws on insurance coverage–I realize that some for profit hospitals have failed to follow some laws, though they have been punished for that). You should not have to quit. The Church should quit the hospital business.

The anti-god agenda is alive and well. It is why Glenn is regularly attacked. Stratfor a supposed intelligence service was shown to have attacked Glenn in emails revealed by wikileaks. They were demonstrably wrong as you can see here. http://guerillatics.com

If you are a god fearing person, the knee jerk reaction by the world will be to condemn you as a lunatic or un-enlightened.

The “progressives” in the church have fed this crocodile now its come back for them. Maybe they‘ll come to undertand that big government programs aren’t charitable nor just. Jesus didn’t call on Rome (the big government of his day) to help the poor, he called on individuals to do so from a righteous heart. The nanny state mentality creates the illusion that “it‘s the government’s job” to help others, which is inconsistent with Biblical teachings.

I can just hear obama telling Catholic Bishops to, “ignore that old guy in the pointy hat,” instead, “listen to my athiest, communist buddies! THEY are ‘ENLIGHTENED’.”

The ARROGANCE is astounding. The utter disrespect and disregard for The Constitution, is disgusting, and direct violation of his oath of office.

There are things on his head in pictures that cannot be explained. The devil’s mark 666 could be the number but in another language or number system. The number 666 is a base 10 number. In a base 6 number system the 666(base 10) would be 3030(base 6). The number 666((base 10) would be a different number in other bases. What number base system did the Hebrews use? What is 666 in the old Chinese Language?

We need to get back on track and focus on what’s important. Vote all the people out of office who supported Obamacare, get it repealed and pray that the Supreme Court will find it unconstitutional.

I’m an atheist and proud to be one, as i have no secret desire to be “saved”, but i find Obama’s war on religion to be very disturbing because religious freedom is the foundation of our country. An attack on religious freedom ( any religion ) is an attack on my religious freedoms, as well.
