Cartoonist Faces Jail-Time for Mocking Police in Animated Online Video

Cartoonist to Face Jail for Mocking Police

In a move that sounds frighteningly similar to what happens when someone speaks out against the powers-that-be in an authoritarian regime — police and city prosecutors in Renton, Washington are excercising what is being called an “extreme abuse of power.”

The town’s city prosecutor wants to actually send a cartoonist to jail for mocking the police department in a series of animated online videos.

According to KIRO7, the animations parody officers having sex while on duty and undue staff promotions among other things. And while the city is seeking to criminalize the cartoons, First Amendment rights advocates say the move is an “extreme abuse of power.”

KIRO Team 7 investigative reporter Chris Halsne reportedly uncovered a “key” document that reveals the city’s true  intent:

The document was quietly filed in King County Superior Court last week. It’s a search warrant accusing an anonymous cartoon creator, going by the name of Mr. Fiddlesticks, of cyberstalking (RCW 9.61.260). The Renton Police Department and the local prosecutor got a judge to sign off as a way to uncover the name of whoever is behind the parodies. Halsne talked with three nationally respected legal experts who believe the use of the cyberstalking statute is likely stomping on the constitution.

it stinks…and even though the US supreme court recently ruled (with the church that hates **** group) that even ugly types of speechis still free speech and this series of parodies are protected free speech now the fine line might be that of where the publisher posts those parodies..IF the creator posts them ONLY on a PD website.then maybe just maybe the cops have a leg to stand on..a weak one but it gives them the warrent…I’d hope not…but seing you can’t even video them without getting arested or beaten…one never knows

In fact, those officer I know would be standing right next to you, defending our Constitution, guns in hand, if literal civil war ever becomes necessary. So, please do not lump all police into one category. Your remarks are offensive and morally degrading to those police who are doing their best to be honest and to protect citizens. I know there are “bad” cops. In this case, however, I feel it is not the cops who are bad, it is the prosecutor and obviously a Judge who are totally disregarding the Constitution. The voters of that town need to replace the prosecutor and the Judge. Just thought of something else: If this guy is parodying these cops and prosecutors and such, he must be hitting a nerve of truth somewhere for them to get so riled up! Seems maybe the voters need to demand an investigation into those parodied, not the cartoonist!

They just need to get all their facts straight so they can hit him with as many bogus internal investigations as they can. To a bad Chief of Police there is nothing worse than somebody pulling all of the skeletons out of the closet. The officer will pay worse than those that did worse. There is nothing that a police administration hates more than an ethical and vocal officer that will publicly hold people accountable when the admin. tries to hide unethical behavior.

I am a retired police officer from Tacoma, Washington and watched all nine of these cartoons. They are hilarious and the problem with them is they speak the truth of all police departments in the entire country. What the departments failed to see is the cartoonist was bringing to light a problem that should and needs to be addressed. The cartoonist was NOT saying the entire department was bad, as a matter of fact he says in the last one (#9) that most of the officers are good hard working civil servants. What he pointed out, in these cartoons, was bad policy and unwarranted promotions. Whan I watched them I saw Tacoma PD in these cartoons as well. I know that the vast majority of TPD officers are good people doing their best to make the city a better place but the problem is jackass officers will do stuff that anti-cops types will blow out of proportion and try to use as an example to say the entire department is that way. The cartoonist was pointing out that sort of thing in hopes to draw attention to it and get it rectified.

Renton needs to get off the back of the cartoonist and keep in mind the cartoonist never mentions Renton PD by name or anyone else in any of the 9 cartoons.

Given Renton has taken this position I hope the cartoonist finds a good attorney and sues them for violating his 1st Ammendment rights. As a matter of fact the prosecutor should be held criminally for violating his civil rights, just like cops have been in the past.

WOW ! That must of been a big hit to the city, I think 10 years ago a PD Chief shoot himself and his wife in his car, with his kids watching from another car, I forgot the name of the city.

What happened to that colored guy ?

The city where the chief killed his wife and himself was Tacoma. I was on duty at the time and he was a fiend of mine. No one would have ever thought he would do something like that. The kids were actually in a nearby store and didn’t actually see the shooting but they saw the aftermath.

Th black guy (Clemmons) who killed the Lakewood officers was killed by a Seattle cop about a week later when he was stopped on a traffic stop. The suspect’s family have all gone off to prison as well for their aiding him.

These people would try to put Charlie Brown in jail. Don’t fart in the wrong direction. They might be knocking at your door in full SWAT gear, with gas masks of course.

“THE MOVE IS AN EXTREME ABUSE OF POWER” is the UNDERSTATEMENT of the year. HOW screwed up is the STATE of Washington, anyway??? GET OVER IT COPS. I sure hope they never find out who made these Cartoons…. time for the SCOTUS. SOUNDS like a hell of a lot of corruption in Renton, WA. STOP THIS NONSENSE NOW!!! STOP IT BEFORE THE FACISTS get any more foothold. THE CITY PROSECUTOR needs to be removed from office. WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE PEOPLE THERE? I mean it…. grow up you crazy liberals.

They just want the person’s name so they can get “pay back”. They know there’s no criminality here. Sounds like someone just trying to bring attention to a problematic police department.

The thing that popped into my head after reading your post was the Godfather in the room with the other bosses. “If something should happen to my son, like being hit by a bolt of lightning”. The maker of these cartoons should be watching for payback. He just exposed the chain of command and their tactics.

Again, I ask; When will people wake up and realize we are now no different that Communist Russia, Iran, or any other dictator state that looks like Hugo Chavez? Many elected democrats have been closet socialists, and not openly admit they belong to the American Socialist Party. They are no longer aftaid to admit it. And we see here that the socialist will trample on YOUR rights to subdue any opposition.
(Wasn’t it Hillary Clinto who screeched four years ago “Somehow, if you disagree with this administration, your not patriotic”)
I suppose Ill have a search warrant served now for speaking the truth

Your wasting your time explaining anything to these people on The Blaze. Look at their idiotic comments about how the Supreme Court should get this case, or how this guy needs to sue the local city and police. I have written off 99% of the commenters here as cowards. They expect someone else to fight their battles for them. Most of them don’t get it. The system has broken down to a condition of tyranny and only “we the people can fix it”; not the lawyers, not the judges, and not the politicians. Lawyers, judges and politicians are the criminals that have brought us to this point! How or why are they going to help?

To be expected from a progressive/liberal bastion like Washington State. It is only a small step form progressive socialism to facism, they are both all about control and restricted freedom.
