Casey Anthony Found Not Guilty of Murder in Death of Daughter Caylee

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Casey Anthony was found not guilty Tuesday of killing her 2-year-old daughter in a case that captivated the nation as it played out on national television from the moment the toddler was reported missing three years ago.

Anthony, 25, wept as the judge read the verdict, which jurors reached after less than 11 hours of deliberation over two days. She was charged with first-degree murder, which could have brought the death penalty if she had been convicted.

Instead, she was convicted of only four counts of lying to investigators looking into the June 2008 disappearance of her daughter Caylee. Her body was found in the woods six months later and a medical examiner was never able to determine how she died.

She will be sentenced by the judge on Thursday and could receive up to a year in jail for each lying count.

Anthony’s attorneys claimed that the toddler drowned accidentally in the family swimming pool, and that her seemingly carefree mother in fact was hiding emotional distress caused by sexual abuse from her father.

Prosecutors contended that Caylee was suffocated with duct tape by a mother who loved to party, tattooed herself with the Italian words for “beautiful life” in the month her daughter was missing and crafted elaborate lies to mislead everyone from investigators to her own parents.

Captivated observers camped outside the courthouse to jockey for coveted seats in the courtroom gallery, which occasionally led to fights among those desperate to watch the drama unfold.

Anthony did not take the stand during the trial, which started in mid-May. Because the case got so much media attention in Orlando, jurors were brought in from the Tampa Bay area and sequestered for the entire trial.

Anthony’s attorney, Jose Baez, conceded that his client had told elaborate lies and invented imaginary friends and even a fake father for Caylee, but he said that doesn’t mean she killed her daughter.

“They throw enough against the wall and see what sticks,” Baez said of prosecutors during closing arugments. “That is what they’re doing … right down to the cause of death.”

He tried to convince jurors that the toddler accidentally drowned in the family swimming pool and that when Anthony panicked, her father, a former police officer, decided to make the death look like a murder by putting duct tape on the girl’s mouth and dumping the body in woods about a quarter-mile away. They said that Anthony’s apparent carefree life hid emotional distress caused by sexual abuse from her father. Her father firmly denied both the cover-up and abuse claims. The prosecution called those claims “absurd,” saying that no one makes an accident look like a murder.

Lead prosecutor Linda Drane Burdick concluded the state’s case by showing the jury two side-by-side images. One showed Casey Anthony smiling and partying in a nightclub during the month Caylee was missing. The other was the tattoo she got a day before her family and law enforcement first learned of the child’s disappearance.

“At the end of this case, all you have to ask yourself is whose life was better without Caylee?” Burdick asked. “This is your answer.”

Prosecutors hammered on the lies Anthony, then 22, told from June 16, 2008, when her daughter was last seen, and a month later when sheriff’s investigators were notified. Those include the single mother telling her parents she couldn’t produce Caylee because the girl was with a nanny named Zanny – a woman who doesn’t exist; that she and her daughter were spending time in Jacksonville, Fla., with a rich boyfriend who doesn’t exist; and that Zanny had been hospitalized after an out-of-town traffic crash and that they were spending time with her.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Probably gonna make most of you mad…

Don’t get me wrong, I think she did it but there’s no DNA and no witnesses to the crime. How can you convict her, seriously.

Is she guilty until proven innocent, come on people, your better than that.

There was plenty of evidence. The smell of a decomposed body in the trunk of a car and air samples that had definate traces of chloroform. It may not have been DNA, but was certainly evidence enough to get her for manslaughter. I can‘t believe she didn’t even get child abuse, considering this baby was gone 31 days before even an attempt was made to look for her, at the insistance of Cindy.

I haven’t watched any of the trial or followed it. But the Jury obviously believed that there was not enough evidence to convict. Innocent until proven guilty.

In the end the person responsible for the child’s death will stand before God and account for what they have done.

You don’t have to have DNA to convict for murder! Get that out of your head! There would be no DNA evidence in this kind of a case.

The DNA evidence wasn’t the issue. Her lack of caring what happened to her child was an issue. How can any, even an uncaring bad mother, not care where her child was for 31 days? I’d have been wringing my hands and standing by the phone if I truly thought my child was kidnapped. But she knew what happened. Ever hear the expression, “Boy, I got away with murder on that one.”

Oh good. From what you are say all those prosecuted prior to 1987 and having no witnesses should get to go free- because DNA was not use to catch criminals until 1987. Most cases do not have witnesses. So, if these are the only criteria for conviction we are in big trouble as a nation. OUR BIGGEST PROBLEM IS that we are not using common sense anymore. Casey was the last person to see her daughter alive. The body was found with duct tape from the house in which Casey lived and had access to. It wasn’t an accidental drowning because drowned, dead bodies do not need duct tape- especially over the mouth/nose. Only live bodies need duct tape! The defense did not try to blame anyone else. They said it was an accidental drowning. First of all, if this was true, who found the body floating in the pool? Casey? Her dad? Her mom? Does not make sense. Why would anyone from that house phone the police to report her missing AT ALL (even 31 days later)? Did Casey find the body floating in the pool and decided not to tell anyone? Why put duct tape on the mouth of a dead body? Did the dad find the body floating in the pool? Why put duct tape on the mouth of the dead body? The defense can’t say that someone abducted the girl and disposed of the body because they have already said it was an accidental drowning. It does not make sense so you have to conclude that the child did not die of an accidental drowning.

Do I personally think she did it, ABSOLUTELY. Just another example of a failed judicial system, the prosecution failed to properly do their job. Except the duct tape! The duct tape that was found on the body was determined to be the same from the Anthony home. This is the stupidest thing I have ever heard. Just because the house was not hers and the duct tape wasn‘t hers doesn’t mean she COULDN’T have used the duct tape- she did live there. She had access to it. Her attorney said it was an accidental drowning. C’mon! why would you need to duct-tape the kid’s mouth if she drowned! The judge DID say to the jury that they could use their common sense in this case. It is refuted that Casey was the last person to see the kid alive. It is refuted that there was duct tape found on the body. It is refuted that the duct tape is the same from the Anthony home. That is all the evidence you need to find that she was at least guilty of manslaughter!

That is unfortunate, but true. It’s the perfect crime. Casey was able to stall, delay, lie and deny long enough to make sure that any evidence connecting her to Caylee’s disappearance and death was well hidden, or deteriorated enough as to make it useless. Even little Calyee‘s body was decomposed to the point that the cause of death couldn’t be determined. I think she chloroformed that child to keep her quiet and out of the way, but gave her too much and accidentally killed her. And even if she didn’t kill her, she knows how she died. I‘m just glad to know that one day she will face a Judge she can’t fool. He knows everything. Casey will pay.

Yeah, this is how the Jury gets confused, by facts. It doesnt take a rocket scientist (or shouldn’t) to figure it out. All the evidence of the disapearance of caylee points directly at Casey. The next step is the logical one, Casy wanted freedom, eliminate the hold and you have freedom, “beautiful Life”.
The jury forgot the one basic premise, COMMON SENSE. Oh well, justice has not been served!

One other thing, the Jurors were tired and wanted to go home, so, they could have said to themselves “lets get this thing over and get out of here, how do you vote with the proof of death? Not guilty 12 times, end of stry , now lets give the verdict and get outa here.

Common sense, were did go?, it surly left 12 people without it. Were you listening to anything? or just hearing echos? I know, Iknow, you tell a story to a room full of people and tell it to just one and have him repreat it to the next person in the room, so on and so on, by the time it gets back to you, the story has changed. The only problem with this parable is, the facts were told to everyone within hearing distance. Well, you could’ve been out of the room, you may have tinnitus, not hearing proper.
Point is, the facts, not what was made up for you to decide if that’s true, but the facts in hand. It points to the guilt of one Casey Anthony of wilful death of her daughter. The Jurors just wanted to go home, they were tired and just needed it to end, NOT GUILTY, let’s get outa here. End of Story.

She got away with murder!!!! no doubt in my mind that she killed that beautiful baby. I was in complete shock after the verdict. If you find her guilty of lying to the police then that proves right there that she was involved in the murder. I thought murder 1 might be hard but I thought for sure they would take manslaughter stick. My solace right now is that God knows and will deal with Casey when it’s her judgement day. What scared me more was something i heard today. She said in a jailhouse letter that when she was set free she planned on trying to get pregnant again right away!!!! I pray that people will stay clear of anything that can help this murderer profit from the horrible tragic death of that sweet angel baby. Caylee may you rest in peace and know you were loved by so many people. Don’t be surprised if you see charges brought against Cindy Anthony for perjury. a reported said last night people were bringing their kids to caylee’s memorial site. They were bringing flowers and saying prayers.. one even brought a Winnie the Pooh balloon. the reporter said it’s funny those closest to caylee grandma Cindy and grandpa George and the woman who was supposed to be her mom…. were no where to be found but complete strangers that felt compassion, love and sadness that there was no justice for little Caylee. How is the jury going to feel when they find out that the ‘swimming pool” story was another of Casey’s lies stolen from a woman who was in jail at the same time she was who had a little boy who Did drown in a swimming pool, and Was found by the grandfather? This info was never presented to the jury. Just another lie by Casey, taking something that really happened to another person and using it for herself. Such a sad, sad story.

I agree with this statement. I just dont think the prosecution did its job in making sure there were enough hard facts and no doubt. Sadly Im sure she did kill her beautiful daughter and because someone in the courtroom was not competenet she walks. Or at least walks from the muder charges but still may get 4 years for lying to police. Lets see what happens to her in prison during this time.

Ok Dale, so what you’re saying is that if a parent strangles their kid then drives the body around in their car until they decide what to do with the it, then dumps it in the woods because the car is starting to really smell, then tells everyone that the kid is at Disneyland having fun while going out and partying for a month until a family member reports that their car smells like a corpse, then tells the cops a nonsensical story or maybe 20 nonsensical stories until the skeletal remains are found scattered by animals in the woods, that that parent that was responsible for that child’s care and well being, that that parent who is supposed to be a loving caring parent of that child, that that parent who had a car that had the stench of death inside it that cadaver dogs reacted to, that that parent has no evidence against them.
That means that any parent that doesn‘t want their kid could just go out and do a delayed abortion on them and as long as the body isn’t found before it becomes skeletal, “Well no evidence, no crime”. Her behavior was evidence as much as any fingerprint and I would say more reliable than any eye witness. If not, then every parent has about 2 1/2 months every summer to decide if they really want that bothersome little person ruining their lives. Who knew summer vacation could become so dangerous.

Unbelievable! The defense came up with such a ridiculous story as to why Casey was not guilty (because her father abused Casey, when Caylee died in the family pool her grand father wrapped duct tape around her face and disposed of her body…WTF?), that any half witted jury could have seen right through that mess and immediately known what a scam was going on here. Unfortunately the jury must have not even been comprised of halfwits.

I am curious to so many, nearly all of you, who are convinced that she is guilty and have the audacity to convict the jury for not coming to your conclusion; were ANY of you in the jury? Did ANY of you have access to all of the evidence? Or are you all reacting because of news reports that have convinced you of the ‘truth’ they have brought you?

Do any of you understand the point of a jury trial by your peers? It isn’t a jury trial by people who know you are guilty! It is a jury trial by people of the same like mind and education, capabilities, and so on, who can formulate proper thought based SOLELY and ONLY on the evidence presented and allowed at trial and having SOLELY and ONLY to do with the issue and charges at hand.

It was said by one of our founders, and I am paraphrasing here, that it is better that nine guilty men go free than imprison one innocent man falsely. The purpose of our criminal justice system is to provide justice by fellow citizens, not by so called smarter people who know how guilty you are.

It means that people that YOU YOURSELF SOMEHOW KNOW ARE GUILTY don’t get found guilty.

I cringe when I see my fellow posters jump on the mainstream media bandwagon blitz of info and fall in line with what they have been told on this issue. I thought we were all smarter than this?

I pray for all of us when we are willing to condemn someone based on media reports and forgo the results of a constitutionally authorized jury of justice.

If the jury HAD found her guilty it would have been because they FELT she did it, not because it was PROVEN she did it.

I do believe it was and accident. Then made to look like someone had abducted her. I think she gave the child Xanax and she overdosed. i believe that is where Zanny the nanny came from. I think she looked up Cloraform because if she were abducted they would have used that to subdue that. I think she did then put her in the bags with the duct tape ect. to make it look like someone else did it. I blame the prosecution for not allowing lesser charges to come in. How many of you are unemployed? The problem with being employed in a case like this is that you have to go to work each day and only get the commentaries and short (edited) news clips from the news shows. Granted, I WISH I was employed but, I’m not and I had the chance to watch each and every day of testimony directly. I was able to put myself in a position of one of the jury. Unless you watched every minute of every day’s testimony and stayed away from the main stream media news… you are incapable of rendering any verdict. The Child is dead and that is a fact. Who did it and who covered it up is not a provable fact that can be presented in court… yet! I do hope that someday the facts will come out but this prosecution just stumbled all over themselves and laughed too much in open court in front of the jury. Their unprofessionalism in open court, in front of the jury, was their own demise and very childish. Who would believe anything those laughing jokers had to say especially after the defense crushed every aspect of their case.

I am also beyond myself at the ignorance of some of the comments on this and other sites. The fact is I still don’t know if Casey did it! I can tell you by the law and the evidence, the prosecution did not come close to proving Casey did this. That is all that matters in the jury trial system. This jury did what it was required to do. It used the evidence and not their emotions, nor the prosecutions hypothetical situations to decide this case. The system worked!

“This country is over?“ ”Idiots in every jury box?”

What the . . .? Just because someone is found not guilty we should throw in the towel and proclaim defeat? Who defeated us and based upon what?

All that happened here today is not unlike other prosecutions where rather than make sure the evidence presented at trial is enough to withstand the burden of proof (which rests ENTIRELY upon the prosecution), they actually think the jury will disregard what they’ve sworn to do and find someone guilty simply because someone “thinks” they are? Either Hauschild (and others like him/her) skipped one too many days of Civics 101, or they’ve been watching too many television programs where all those believed to be guilty actually do end up in prison.

This jury did a great job and should be commended for their verdict. Likewise there are prosecutors and other members of their office who need to find employment elsewhere. They failed to do their jobs – plain and simple. Let‘s not throw out a perfectly good legal system just because we don’t like a verdict.

Fact is there was NO evidence proving Casey Anthony murdered her daughter. The only objective facts we know is that Caylee is dead, and no one knows yet why, how and by whom. You cannot convict anyone on assumptions, until those questions are answered by proof and not made up narrative, this was a successful trial with a fair outcome.

I guess that I disagree with all of you posting.
I was positive, like most, that she did it before the trial but as I watched the trial day after day I kept waiting for the prosecution to prove it beyond a reasonable doubt. They did not prove it to me and the defense closing arguments were spot on. I believe the prosecution proved she was murdered but there was no evidence that showed that Casey did it. Dr. Baden agreed that there was absolutely no forensic evidence and none of the experts testified that their was.
If I had been on the jury, I would have found her not guilty as well.
I love this country and I love our rights. I would hate to see a time that I would vote to kill someone because my intuition told me they did it but the facts did not.
For those of you who want an eye for an eye, please remember; she will get hers in the end if she did it. There is a higher power than the electric chair at work in our lives.
