Catholic Bishops Call for End to Cuban Embargo

Since John Paul II’s turn as Pope, Catholics have had a deeply antagonistic relationship with communist regimes. However, given the aftermath of a recent trip by Catholic bishops to Cuba, that hostility may be lifting. That, or the Catholic bishops have spontaneously accepted the libertarian argument that free trade can end authoritarian governments. Either way, this report from Religious News Service may surprise some people:

Following Pope Benedict XVI’s recent trip to Cuba, U.S. Catholic bishops are pushing the State Department to lift the 50-year Cuban embargo in order to improve religious liberty and human rights for the Cuban people.

In a Tuesday (April 17) letter to Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, Bishop Richard E. Pates of Des Moines, Iowa, the chairman of the bishops’ Committee on International Justice and Peace, pressed the Obama administration to pursue “purposeful engagement rather than ineffective isolation” with Havana.[...]

The embargo should be lifted, Pates wrote, so that “greater support and assistance may be provided to the ordinary citizens” of the country.

Pates’ approach may strike some observers as naive – after all, the Cuban government could easily be using its own people as economic human shields. However, this would be in keeping with the Catholic Bishops’ generally liberal turn in recent years.

I’m well aware that there are statistically speaking fewer pedophile priests than pedophiles in the the general population of American men (3% compared to 7%). That’s probably also true if the comparison group is male teachers. BUT, the fact remains that the Catholic Bishops HAVE NO RIGHT to try to change American policies. That’s particularly true when every one knows that what the Bishops want is to flood this country with Catholics from Latin America. This wouldn’t be a “humanitarian policy,” it would be a crime against America and a humanitarian disaster. Imagine 120 million Mexican peasants pouring over the border … bringing 3rd world ignorance, poverty, and disease with them. And Catholic Bishops want this to happen?? Can you say TREASON? Sure you can.

Dear Catholic Bishops: kindly shut the hell up about the embargo. We’ll stop the embargo when 1.) there’s a free and fair elections process in Cuba and 2.) when the Catholic Bishops expel the few remaining pedophiles among you. And you do KNOW that there are pedophiles among you. THEN you can lecture the American people to your heart’s content. Of course, since most Americans aren’t Catholic, we don’t have to listen to you. In other words, kindly shut the hell up and butt out of politics. You all seem to think that you’re members of Congress, so occasionally, we just have to remind you that you’re not. Oh … also give my most contemptuous regards to the Archbishop of Miami. You have no right to try to influence American immigration policy, so shut the hell up, Wensky! Jack ass. Moron. stalin,
I perceive the deception runs deep in you. The catholic leaders have become the same as those in Jesus’ time that he so openly and sternly rebuked. I could bring up a hundred traditions that are pounded into the heads of catholics and the usual replies and excuses for them from the indoctrinated lost parishioners. But what good would that do? You use stalin in your name, he was of the same mind set, ” A lie told enough times becomes the truth.” The fact is that the catholic church does the same thing that the progressives are trying to do with their big government policies.
You may as well recruit truthfully..like this, ” Come join us and we will take care of all your needs. No need to pray to God when we have our own vast selection of god’s, idols, beads, dead people and great a payment plan to absolve your sins. Paying indulgences is a free pass to live like hell and not worry about facing God and confessing your sins to Him. We have little booths set up where you can get it off your chest and avoid that whole feeling of conviction by the Holy Spirit for your crimes against God and man. We use mary instead of Jesus because she has no proven written laws for us to follow. Don’t worry about your feelings of guilt and shame….in time it willed be seared as with a hot iron and we will give you the words to speak to those that are a part of us in our sect. Don’t worry about wasting your time reading the Bible, we will tell you what it says.”

Lets not jump the gun. Committees within the USCCB can release all kinds of statements that do not have unanimous approval or consent from other bishops. This is a small ad hoc committee that has an opinion that really is not within its competency. These particular bishops are speaking from a humanitarian point of view, not political. Their weight or influence on catholics falls within a prudential judgement. This is the same group that attacked the Paul Ryan budget, with the same thinking. These bishops are not economist and do not understand what measures that are needed to get the country on fiscal stable ground. Bishop Richard Pates tends to lean left, he is a product of his generation and certainly does not reflect the attitudes and beliefs of most bishops.

Cuban communism is evil and should not be supported in any way. When are Catholics going to realize that social justice as the world defines it is not compatible with Biblical teaching? Catholics were behind the curve ball on obamacare and now they are fighting against the contraception/abortion issue imposed on them. I was raised in the Catholic church and now understand that while Catholics are Christians, they are not taught what Jesus meant when he ministered social justice to the down-trodden. He empowered people to “heal” themselves, not wait for someone to carry them to the healing waters.

I agree. My son at Jesuit school was taught social justice. They said society caused people to be poor. Charity is diddly squat. The poor have a RIGHT to TAKE it from the rich.

I have found that many Christian/Cathohlic people believe that the government should help the poor. They have good intentions, but do not realize the end result such as destroying religious freedom, family values, keeping people in their sin, and so on.

I agree. I had to leave the Catholic Church because I could no longer abide their liberal policies such as immigration and social justice. They got in bed with Obama and his ilk on Obamacare. Frankly, they should have known better. It is unfortunate that now they see themselves in a defensive position on the issue of abortion. I have sympathy for my fellow Catholic Christians, but I could no longer stand to attend Mass and hear sermons that preached that the working middle class needed to get on board with social justice in all its forms. Sad, a beautiful religion hijacked by Marxists.

Why would the RC Church not be then, in favor of normalizing with a communist state. They were used to complete control of most of the know world during the DARK ages, for 1200 years. THAT, of course, is why there WERE Dark Ages.

A letter written by Senator Ted Kennedy to the Pope. It was hand delivered by President Obama Summer of 2009 when he visited the Vatican. Kennedy had hoped to repair his relationship with the Catholic Church as he lay dying of cancer at 77 years of age. In spite of his pro-abortion record throughout his tenure, he wrote about his record of helping the poor and keeping his faith. He asked for prayer as he admitted he was an imperfect human preparing for “the next passage of life.” Without any gospel remedy or biblical hope in the return letter, the Pope’s reply came, dictated, of course, through his assistant. The Pope thanked Kennedy for the letter, expressed concern for his illness, and then closed the brief letter with these words, “Commending you and the members of your family to the loving intervention of the Blessed Virgin Mary.”

How tragic this is. It is one thing to not hear the gospel of Jesus Christ while alive; it is another to not hear it when about to die.

It’s a very common psychological disturbance in Communist countries: Communist ideology teaches to hate the rich, just like Robin Hood (rob-in-hood, as I call him), while making common people not an iota richer.

The Catholic church is thinking about all that revenue potential being lost , its hard to get wealth from communist because they don’t have anything. Now if you can open up trade then eventually Cuba would return to a vacation paradise once again. Not to mention Latinos take that no abortion thing seriously unlike most gringo Catholics. More Followers mean more money. Just like amnesty for illegals the Catholic church supports that too & why? Cause they can earn a lot more for the church up here than they can down there.

The leadership of the catholic church can do the math & they realize that caucasians aren’t reproducing fast enough to replace themselves. Asians don’t do the Catholic thing in large numbers, blacks are more likely to be Baptist or muslims & their numbers are stagnant anyway. So they realize that Latinos are the church’s future. The government is the religion, so basically if Communism takes over then these Catholic Bishops will be replaced. Have these Bishops thought about this?

during the cold war, the goal was to break down barriers and export our ideas of freedom to the oppressed people of communist countries. So here we stand with an opportunity to do the same for cuba – and we have thumbed our noses at them for 30 years….hardly sounds rational or christian of us

“And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”

“After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands; And cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb.”

POPP; I agree with you. All of these distractive comments about “ showing Christians love ” to the Communists governments are either by naive or by Trolls. You can’t show Christian love to a Communist government ( the people do not rule in those systems ) because they detest religions and will only “ use ” them for their best benefit. That is what is troublesome about dealing with the Far Left. They hate God and religions. The Far Left are best described as those that Christ/ apostles said were the ones that you A.) tried to convert and then B.) dusted off your shoes and hit the road rather than wasting time trying to convert those who weren’t listening. Sounds like a lot of those “ not listening ” types are members of our present Far Lefties. And the Trolls that we see playing the Alinsky baloney here …

What???? And Mr Benedict (sorry I don’t know the proper title – no disrespect to the Pope) you have been doing so well in stemming the communist tide. I will reserve “judgement” and accept (though not a Catholic) that you know what you are doing – though I disagree – I can’t seem to get past the “starve the beast” mentality hopeful that the populace will rise up… Since the comments are coming from the bishops – perhaps they are speaking without Pontifical authorization? I am so confused

What would make you think “starve the beast” would work when it hasn’t worked for the last 40 years? It gives Castro the ultimate go-ahead to blame America for Cuba’s woes for the same time period.

Vox : who cares what Castro says ? Blame America ? Gee that sounds like our present Far lefties . Who cares about the dysfunctional ” blamers ? ” Many envy those who have more . Look at Obama and his “ redistribution” and anti-banks, anti-rich rhetoric . Based on hate and envy. Rome wasn’t built in a day and Communism/ envy / hate won’t be destroyed in one day either.

@ Vox…oh I don’t know…it took way more than 50 years (approx 75 years from 1917 ’til around 1989) to “starve the beast” of the Soviet Union…. I think we can wait just a bit longer. But then I suppose you think that didn’t really happen ?

Not the real Catholics, just the pretend ones. It is pretty much the same within all denominations – the true believers (practicers) vs those who just claim the title (in name only) Same with the Jews…the observant Jews are not the trouble, as are neither the observant, Catholics, Baptists, Methodists, Pentacostals…..the troubel comes form those of any faith who claim to “know” better than God (that would be the god of the Bible, the God of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and Jesus)

In the end times there will be (are) many false prophets…we are inundated with them – even within the walls of our churches.

Those who know the Truth better wise up, buck up, study up and stand up

If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”
      (2 Chron. 7:14)

Don’t be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your families, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your homes.” Nehemiah 4:14b

LORD, there is no one like you to help the powerless against the mighty. Help us, O LORD our God, for we rely on you, and in your name we have come against this vast army. O LORD, you are our God; do not let man prevail against you.” 2 Chron. 14:11

On May 6th, 1816, John Adams wrote to Thomas Jefferson stating, “I do not like the late Resurrection of the Jesuits. They have a General, now in Russia, in correspondence with Jesuits in the U.S. who are more numerous than everybody knows. Shall We not have Swarms of them here? In as many shapes and disguises as ever…. In the shape of printers, Editors, Writers, School masters, etc. If ever any Congregation of men could merit, eternal Perdition on Earth and in Hell… it is this Company of Loyola.” (The Writings of Thomas Jefferson, Vol. XV, 1905, p. 17). On August 1st Jefferson replied: “I dislike, with you, their restoration, because it marks a retrograde step from light towards darkness.” (The Writings of Thomas Jefferson, Vol. XV, 1905, p. 58; The Writings of Thomas Jefferson, Vol. VII, 1857, p. 27; Adams-Jefferson Letters, Vol. 2, p. 474; Secret History, E. The bishops are NOT surrendering to socialism, THEY ARE SOCIALISTS! (and homosexuals). They are closer to LIBERATION THEOLOGY than to Catholicism. The Catholic church has been destroyed from the inside. We should lift the embargo on Cuba when CUBA IS FREE!!

Agree with some of your points but please can the “ homosexual ” business. That nasty smear and the “all priests are pedophiles ” is so overdone and unfair. ( the same garbage the Far Left New York Times run constantly ) The way Big Brother Obama is heading this country, you just might be happy to have Big God on your side trying to protect your individual dignity and rights over an authoritarian / oppressive Big Brother styled government.

you would think 50 years of history is enough to show you how wrong you are. if you want communism to collapse, then the people of cuba must be SHOWN that freedom and trade can increase their living standards. Since when do we not trade with communist countries anyways? Venezuela is just as communist and we import a ton of their oil.

Soy: You forget that “ the people of Cuba ” have NO say in what their government does Which is exactly what is wrong with Communists/ dictatorial governments where the power to make decisions lies only in Big Daddy. American can not reach the “ people” of Cuba because their government is in the way and in control. THAT is the problem.
