Catholic Bishops: Obamas Contraception Mandate Change Unacceptable

Timothy Dolan, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, initially said the alterations to President Barack Obama's contraception mandate a good "first step," but the bishops said Friday the changes were still "unacceptable."

After initially saying the changes to President Barack Obama’s contraception mandate were a good “first step,” the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops said late Friday they have “serious objections” to the new policy and that it remained “unacceptable,” CNS News reported.

Under Obama’s alteration, religious-affiliated employers may refrain from paying for contraceptive coverage themselves, but their insurers are still obligated to provide the coverage for free — a change that still raises “serious moral concerns,” the bishops said in a statement.

“It would still mandate that all insurers must include coverage for the objectionable services in all the policies they would write,” the bishops said. “At this point, it would appear that self-insuring religious employers, and religious insurance companies, are not exempt from this mandate…the lack of clear protection for key stakeholders…is unacceptable and must be corrected.”

The bishops said they also object to the plan’s retention of the “nationwide mandate of insurance coverage of sterilization and contraception, including some abortifacients.”

“This is both unsupported in the law and remains a grave moral concern. We cannot fail to reiterate this, even as so many would focus exclusively on the question of religious liberty,” the statement said.

Saying the proposal “continues to involve needless government intrusion in the internal governance of religious institutions,“ the bishops vowed to ”continue—with no less vigor, no less sense of urgency—our efforts to correct this problem.”

    Does the Republican establishment even begin to understand the anger and frustration many of us are feeling about this president? Con man doesn’t cut it – he is arrogant, smug, cunning but essentially ignorant because he doesn‘t understand people’s faith. This is not complicated. The Catholic Bishops are taking a stand for religious freedom. Obama wants to undermine religious freedom and he really thinks he can out smart these guys. He has hit a boulder in the road. No amount of shell game compromise by Obama and Sebelius is going to be acceptable.

      Obama does understand ‘faith’. However, he wants the government to override the Christian based religions and their desires. Don’t forget that Obama gave a waiver to Muslims. The excuse was that Muslims see health insurance as gambling. Guess who will pay for their care? Dhimmi, anyone?

      While everyone argues about this, nobody notices the subtile change in power and freedom.
      A Bill that has taken a HUGE fight in Congress and votes from ALL of it’s members, is altered by the edict of King Usama.

      When did the WH get the power to alter ANY part of this LAW ?

      Why would they pick a huge fight with a huge voting block in an election season ?

      Don’t be surprised when elections and CONgress are suspended in the coming months.
      I imagine it will go something like Saddam’s visit to his parlement the day he took power.

      no, this is beyond the obvious objections to a law about to be implemented,
      it is about the very separation of Powers and the excercise of that power by Government.
      This healthcare law needs to be struck down in it’s ENTIRETY as unconstitutional !
      CONgress needs to reign in this would-be-king right now or we are lost.

      I hope American is finally waking up to the ‘Progressive’ agenda; At some point the gloves have to come off and I think this is the point; the other pont is 2d Amendment rights; ‘fast and furious’ was to ‘ show’ that US gun stores werer the source of the weapons in Mexico; therefore we (US citizens) must give up our freedom so mexicans stop shooting each other.

      I WISH all the posters on this thread – male and female – would admit (in their posts) whether they have EVER used contraceptives (the pill or condoms) – BEFORE suggesting that it is wrong for them to be prescribed.

      My sister used to LOSE at least three days a month from work because of heavy bleeding and cramps. She lost several jobs because of her absences. However WAAAAAAAAY BACK – when the pill first came on the market – she finally was able to live a fairly normal life.

      Now, GUESS who suggested she talk to her doctor about the pill in the first place? YEP, it was her PRIEST!!! Go figure!!

      Let me get this straight. Catholic Priests can abuse young boys (I guess they didn’t want ot impregnate girls) and have the heirachy deem the ‘sin’ wasn’t enough to oust these pedophiles from the church, but heaven forbid that same group of MEN should give women an assist in planning when and how to have a family. And they are even ignoring the MEDICAL benefits of the pill for women who are prone to cysts and bleeding which completely destroys their lifestyles – yet can restore a womans ‘useful’ life to her family during certain times of the month.

      I DARE any of these men to cite a passage in their Bible which claims that contraceptives violate their beliefs. AGAINST God’s teachings? I’m thinking of the passages which deal with Harems and Eunuchs (castrated men). Were Eunuchs part of God’s plan for contraception?? If so, maybe these Bishops would allow castration to be included in the insurance policies!! What do you think?

Some did out of hunger. Many did niot and stayed faithful. Today 150 years later the stigma of being a souper stays with families even in the United States , I still hear it: Lie don‘t let your kids near the Murphy’s kids, their family were soupers. And man, thats great since he doesnt prosecute weed anymore and I can get a prescription for it with all my anxiety, I’m really going to need birth control. Only problem is I’ll have to get a job. Guess I can stick to my original plan and get an abortion if I get pregnant. I mean really, I shouldn’t have to be responsible for getting pregnant.       I guess I might feel a bit differently about the Catholic Church if several things HAD NOT happened.

      1. The church REFUSED to marry my parents because one of them wasn’t Catholic.
      2. The Bishop came to see my parents to excommunicate my dad because he had (the Bishops words) ‘FATHERED TWO BASTARD CHILDREN’.
      3. The local ‘priest’ watched (and laughed) while leaning on the garden gate as my mother fell, spilled her bag of groceries and she and I tried to pick them up before they rolled downhill.
      4. Years later – my father in-law was dying of cancer and the priest came to the house but REFUSED last rites because the man hadn’t been to confession for the last three months. The man had been bed-ridden for five months.
      5. When a Catholic girlfriend married (at the Catholic Altar) and was on her honeymoon, the police came to the honeymoon suite and arrested her husband for bigamy. She turned to the priest for solace but instead was rejected and told that SHE was the criminal, and required to PAY TO THE CHURCH 50% of her earnings until further notice. I took her to live with me and helped her get her life back together.

      Have you ever heard of the S[anish Inquisition? Look it up! Sometimes I feel like we are still living it!

      The chrch brought this on by separating its charities and universities from the dioscese. They wanted to serve two masters to get funding. every person hired should have as their primary job requirement to spead the catholic faithwhether janitor, nurse or professor. And they would on condition for hireing become a member of a lay religious organization.hence like nuns or priests or monks ,this order would be exempt on religious freedom grounds to partake in any scheme that violates their religious beliefs. people looking to be hired by these instituions would know that when applying. Any and all beliefs would be acceptable but you would agree to join the order[as a formaility].

What is so hard to understand that it is the fundamental belief in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, that the government cannot tell a religious organization to do anything against its beliefs? BHO did absolutely nothing for the Christians and their beliefs, but he sure tried to make my beliefs irrelevent by saying I can use any kind of birth control and my healthcare is going to pay for it. What, not enough of them passed out like candy unless it is Valentines Day and then you have to give oragami? All BHO and his minions are trying to do is give free handouts, and nothing is free, we will just have higher premiums and we all pay for it anyway.The whole thing is Unconstitutional to begin with, quit trying to justify killing babies for no reason. Look up the history of Margaret Sanger. You know, the mother of modern day birth control and how she started all this genocide stuff.       Why? Because ONLY 23% of ALL folks in the USA are Catholic (or Catholic Leaning!

      If, as you suggest as your solution there are VERY few Protestants, Evangelicals, Jews, Mormons or Secularists who would be willing to work for such an organization.

      As a matter of fact about 98% of Catholic women USE contraceptives and 58% completely DISAGREE with the Bishops!!

      NO one has the right to tell me what insurance I can buy, what I have to offer my employees if anything, what I eat, what I think. IF OBAMA wanted to insure the poor, then why didn’t he set up tax credits for insurance companies (like pro bono) work. It would be up to the people who shop for insurance companies to put those who won’t take pre-existing conditions out of the market place.

      Instead, states like CALIFORNIA, who limit who can sell ins. in their state, have Insurance Commissioners who get under-the-table pay offs in exchange for limiting citizen’s access to insurance.

      Obama has NO RIGHT to dictate anything to us, for any reason. HE has broken every aspect of our Constitution. HE is a total liar…and if you guys are dumb enough to let him get a second term we will never have another election because he is all set to become a Dictator. HE is NOT trying to help uninsured…he’s buying votes. IF he really gave a damn about any Americans he would not be trying to destroy America so fast. THINK ABOUT it.       According to a 2011 study by the Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate at Georgetown University, “The US Catholic population is currently 77.7 million.” The Catholics are the largest single religious denomination in the United States, comprising about 22 percent of the population.
      The United States has the fourth largest Catholic population in the world, after Brazil, Mexico, and the Philippines.
      77.7 million Let’s assume a 50/50 split male to female. That’s 39 million catholic women. You want me to believe that 98% (38 million) use contraceptives? Think for just one second. Walk into any Catholic church and look around. The vast majority of women are not of child bearing age. Most are too young or too old to be worried about contraception.

    The revised policy is perfectly reasonable, the bishops can go to hell. The people don’t want the church telling the government what to do any more than they want the government telling the church what to do.     Hey wait a minute! Obama just can’t change a line of the law because we are upset over it. The change has to be made through the Congressional process.
    As much as I loathe ObamaCare, the changes to “Law” have to be made through the legislature and signed by POTUS.
    To allow a President to change any portion of any law at anytime is the death of our Republic…come to think of it, we stopped being a Republic about 3 years ago.

      He didn’t change anything at all, the insurance companies were already supposedly paying for it anyway, and a person can still get the stuff whether or not the Catholics and others agree, we the people will still pay whatever the insurance companies turn around and raise the premiums, so nope, no change whatsoever. Funny how we are all arguing about an Unconstitutional law. I know Newt will get rid of it in a half heartbeat, not so sure about Mitt.

      You’re exactly right. I think this is why the POTUS *deliberatly* “stepped into this mess.” Now, he can look like he is backing away, but really getting what he wanted in the first place: the power to dictate law. The 1st amendment issues are important, but are only a smoke screen. Since when does the POTUS, or the Congress for that matter, have the power to dictate to a private entity what must be in a private contract with another entity? If they have that power, the 1st, 2nd, and all the rest of the amendments are as meaningless as the Constitution itself, since they have been superseded by an all powerful Federal Gov.

    This “accommodation” is a farce, since the insurance companies will just pass along the cost of the “free” contraceptive coverage to the Catholic institutions buried in the normal rate increases generated by everything else in Obamacare. The fundamental underlying problem goes beyond this particular provision of Obamacare. The real issue is the old Supreme Court decisions which vastly expanded the original scope of the Constitution‘s interstate commerce clause and limited the first amendment’s protections of religious freedom. We will not be able to stop and roll back Obamacare or the numerous other ever-increasing expansions of the federal leviathan until we have restored the original meaning of these constitutional clauses. Given how entrenched those old decisions are, we can only accomplish this by amending the Constitution to reverse these Supreme Court misinterpretations of the Constitution’s original meaning and structure.     The comment by the Bishop seems to elude to a compromise instead of sticking to the church’s values and beliefs. There is no room for compromise. Where is the Vatican on this?

    There is a lot of fodder in all of this to help sink NoBama in November if handled correctly.

      The comment by the Bishop seems to elude to a compromise instead of sticking to the church’s values and beliefs. There is no room for compromise. Where is the Vatican on this?

      First, the word you want to use is “allude” not “elude”. Second, can you point to anything in the Bishop’s comment that alludes to compromise. It seems that they‘ve finally realized that Obama is duplicitous and isn’t to be trusted. I’m not sure what more the Vatican needs to say. The Bishops have already made the position of the Catholic Church quite clear.

      It isn’t free on 2 levels. The church accepting the mandate because there is no financial responsibility is ludicrus. There is a spirital acceptance if accepted on any level. Secondly, if the insurance companies have to pay for it then they will just pass it on to their customers, both being the church (albeit in a smaller disguised sum, and the catholics who have this insurance company as individuals. There ain’t no free lunch.

      You are right. The worst part of this is that the next step will be covering abortions…not just birth control bills. Anyone can walk into Planned Parenthood and get birth control pills for free. They are located a block away from high schools and all the high school girls can get the pills and parents are none the wiser. This is not about free contraceptives. This is about FREEDOM. The details in Obamacare are decided by Health & Human Services. They decide our healthcare…….whether it be the cost of an operation versus our age……..or abortion.     It seems such a little thing to allow the government to force Catholics institutions into this contraception/abortion/women’s health fiasco seeing as how the Catholics are still going to expect the government to go along with their grand scheme of redistributing wealth and social justice. It is the Catholic church that supports amnesty for illegals, not only in this country but in Mexico too. If Obama can make the insurance companies pay for these services, why can‘t he make McDonald’s feed the homeless? It might take a lot of pressure off of food stamps.

      Not all Catholics support COLLECTIVE social justice. Catholics believe in free will and believe that their individual decisions and conscience play a role in their salvation….not government decisions but their own decision. This is an ongoing and lifetime of decisions….not a onetime decision to vote to do something collectively. They believe God gave us free will and individual gifts to use on our own. Obama is fooling alot of them into believing in collective salvation or his vision of social justice but the religion teaches that you need to be individually responsible. How can one be individually responsible if they are mandated and bound by government? Free will is freedom to choose. We were given a lifetime by God to make daily decisions regarding our life. Obama sat in a Black Liberation church for over 20 years listening and being influenced by a pastor that preached collective salvation, that one race is victims and damning America. I don’t expect Obama to understand any other religion!

      I am Catholic and find the mandate unacceptable. The fact that it is in direct violation of my beliefs is only one part of the equation. Equally significant: a. the attack on ALL of OUR FREEDOM to believe and practice without government intrusion. b. the onslaught by ALL our politicians to control our daily living. c. the evil intentions of OUR politicians to destroy the family. d. the horror of our culture of death. e. the insult of our intelligence of this so called compromise!     How can Obama claim that he‘s got an acceptable change to a mandate he isn’t lawfully allowed to make? If Obama is a dictator then he he can implement law and regulation at his whim, but if he‘s not then he doesn’t have the authority to dictate to the nation his demands be met. The socialists are going to have to either claim Obama is our dictator now and abdicate the legislative power to Obama or admit that Obama is not a dictator and acknowledge that he cannot force his mandates upon the nation as he has already.

      It is not a change to the mandate….it is a shell game….If the Catholic institution pays a premium to an insurance company the cost of what the details of the plan are included in the premium. Even if the Catholic institution self-insures…the cost will be passed down in some form or another.

      Why not to raise taxes on the rich needs to be articulated for the idiot vote as well. All people are paying the higher taxes of the corporations and the rich in the price they pay for their goods and services. Every time the government sticks it to the oil company the price at the pump will go up. Every time they charge more on taxes we pay for it in the price of the company that makes the item that has to pay the tax, the store that sells the item that pays the higher tax and for the transportation of the item from manufacturer to store in the higher cost of their taxes and gas. WE PAY FOR ALL OF IT. NOTHING IS FREE. They dangle a freebie in front of an idiot and they jump. Obama is courting the idiot vote!

      I understand what comprehensive health care coverage is. They are health insurance policies provided under the new health care program. There is a set of regulations that set up a system of coverage to be provided by all health insurers who want to offer comprehensive health insurance plans.

      This has nothing to do with the Catholic Church, unless they acting as an insurance company lobbyist

      In comprehensive health care coverage –all the employees who participate in that plan are expected to pay a premium for their health care coverage & the premium for the comprehensive coverage would include providing contraception/sterilization/abortion coverage regardless if I used it or not. BASICALLY WHAT B.O. IS TRYING TO DO IS STATING THAT ALL INSURANCES HAVE TO PROVIDE CONTRACEPTION, THUS MAKING IT IMPOSSIBLE FOR THE CATHOLIC CHURCH TO BE ABLE TO USE ANY INSURANCE COMPANY!!       The mandates in Obamacare go beyond this one issue. Insurance in the beginning was designed to cover catastropic illness. It was not designed to take care of every single need regarding one’s health. People paid for their own office visits and immunizations. By defining “healthcare” in such a way as to say all people deserve to have this or that paid for by a group of individuals who pay the cost of insurance is inself a mandate.
      This issue is larger than a religious one but certainly Catholic institutions should hold firm on this and all people who believe in freedom should vote against Obama. If Marybethelizabeth wants to vote for Obama because she believes in his policies designed to takeover our freedom that is her choice. Obama is certainly appealing to the idiot vote by dangling free things in front of them and using language to try to influence the idiot vote. Insurance companies do not pick up costs for free…those paying the premiums do. Even if the Catholic hospital or university is NOT self-insured you can be sure that the premium includes the cost of those contraceptives. My question to you is …why should the rest of us contribute to someone else’s birth control expense if we do not believe in birth control? All of us are paying the higher premiums for mandated details in the bill. We pay for the extra cost of covering pre-existing conditions. We pay for all of it.

      Planned Parenthood gives out free birthcontrol pills. Free contraceptives are available for anyone to easily acquire. They are located everywhere and in every neighborhood. There is one a block from the high school. Any high school girl and walk in there and get free pills without her parents knowing about it. Any poor person can get free pills. This is not about helping out the poor and about woman’s health. This is about taking away our freedom. First the mandate to buy, then the mandate to cover BC pills…….the Obamacare bills is chucked full of mandates because it is handing over all health decisions to the government.       MARYBETHELIZABETH, What Obama is trying to do is making it impossible for the Catholic Church to get insurance. Let me give you the BERT & ERNIE explanation. I’m Catholic & my health care premium is based upon the ENTIRE GROUP COVERAGE. That means I would have to pay the exact same premium as the person who gets contraception/sterilization/abortion. Thus, my premium I am paying to the insurance is being used to fund contraception/sterilization/abortion. I do not want ANY of my health care premium money used to fund this.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      Marybethelizabeth. Please, please, please read the first amendment to the constitution. Do you see where it says “Congress shall make NO law respecting an establiishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise therof;? The government can’t mandate a religious institution to anything. Not in the name of healthcare, morality, or safety, or justice, or whatever. The only reason they do is because of people like you who let them get away with it. Please educate yourself.

      30. Discredit the American Founding Fathers. Present them as selfish aristocrats who had no concern for the “common man.”
      31. Belittle all forms of American culture and discourage the teaching of American history on the ground that it was only a minor part of the “big picture.” Give more emphasis to Russian history since the Communists took over.
      32. Support any socialist movement to give centralized control over any part of the culture–education, social agencies, welfare programs, mental health clinics, etc.
      36. Infiltrate and gain control of more unions.
      38. Transfer some of the powers of arrest from the police to social agencies. Treat all behavioral problems as psychiatric disorders which no one but psychiatrists can understand [or treat].
      39. Dominate the psychiatric profession and use mental health laws as a means of gaining coercive control over those who oppose Communist goals.

      The more this ##$&%*@$% does the more I believe he was raised from birth by the communists and radicals to become the leader of this country and specifically, to do whatever he can to bring about the fall of the U.S. Right from the start he took the country by storm and hardly anyone had ever heard of him. The mysterious birth certificate, the secretive nature of details of growing up-I know there was a ‘story’ which we were given-the mysterious education, etc. really makes it look more and more like he was coached and taught how to bring this country to its knees and little by little, him and his little band of criminals are destroying everything our Constitution stands for. Everyone needs to wake up!

      For sure. They could pay all of our medicines that our insurance doesn’t cover. I especially have used a lot of aspirins in last 3 years maybe I could get paid for it. Then there is all the vitamins that is needed since Michelle wants us all to be healthy, we might as well get paid for those. How about our soap so we don’t spread diseases. Oh, so much we could ask for and then nobody will have to be responsible for anything.
