Catholic Leaders Read Letter Condemning Pro-Gay Marriage Law to 2,500 Churches in England

Catholic Church in England Reads Anti Gay Marriage LetterLONDON (The Blaze/AP) — The Catholic Church in England intensified its campaign against government plans to legalize same-sex marriage Sunday, urging the faithful to protect the “true meaning” of matrimony for future generations.

In a letter read in 2,500 parish churches across the country during Sunday Mass, the church’s senior archbishops argued that the proposed change would reduce the significance of marriage.

“The law helps to shape and form social and cultural values. A change in the law would gradually and inevitably transform society’s understanding of the purpose of marriage,” Archbishop Vincent Nichols and Archbishop Peter Smith said in the letter.

“There would be no recognition of the complementarity of male and female or that marriage is intended for the procreation and education of children,” they wrote.

The archbishops ended the letter by calling on Catholics to fulfill their duty to make sure “the true meaning of marriage is not lost for future generations.”

Britain’s government plans to allow everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation, to have the option of a civil marriage. Prime Minister David Cameron has openly backed the plans, and the equalities minister will launch a consultation later this month on how to change the legal definition of marriage to include same-sex couples.

Human rights activists said the Catholics’ opposition amounted to discrimination.

“They want the law to discriminate against gay couples. Discrimination is not a Christian value,” said gay rights campaigner Peter Tatchell.

Below, watch Archbishop Vincent Nichols of the Diocese of Westminster reading the controversial letter:

Currently only heterosexual couples are permitted to get married in Britain, while civil partnerships, introduced in 2005, are limited to same-sex couples.

The archbishops’ message came after Pope Benedict XVI on Friday denounced what he called the “powerful” gay marriage lobby in America and told visiting U.S. bishops to not back down in the face of “powerful political and cultural currents seeking to alter the legal definition of marriage.”

Last week Keith O’Brien, the head of the Scottish Catholic Church, condemned the British marriage proposals as “madness,“ and accused the coalition government of trying to ”redefine reality.”

Thank God for at least one of his Christian religions is trying to stand up for Decency against the degeneracy of gay marriage —peacefully — without beheading or stoning them. (in Western Civilzation)) maybe it’s okay the gays have civil unions with ALL the legal perks, but to insist their ‘union’ be called “Marriage” to legitimize as “normal” it is just one step too far. it’s Communist-oriented. proof:
45 Declared Goals of the Communist Take-Over of America [1963]
#26. Present homosexuality, degeneracy and promiscuity as “normal, natural, healthy.”
#40. Discredit the family as an institution.
#25. Break down cultural standards of morality
#27. Infiltrate the churches and replace revealed religion with “social” religion. Discredit the Bible and emphasize the need for intellectual maturity, which does not need a “religious crutch.”

As usual, everything you say is total bs. Gay people are no more an abomination than straight people; gay marraige has been practised for thousands of years within the church; gay people all have families too and often create loving families, not destroy them; neo-nazi christians are being immoral via their wholesale assault against gay people and gay people show true christian values of inclusiveness and non judgement of all people, unlike the incredibly hateful, judgemental so-called christians on this site.

It appears that the world is nearing the point that Christians are going to be persecuted for defending Gods laws. Right now the Catholic church is spearheading this fight. As Christians are we called to suffer with Christ or join the secular world in persecuting fellow Christians? Simply pasting a “Not of this world” sticker on your car next to your Obama sticker is not enough. As Christians we must stand together against these attacks. We must be united, sadly there are already so many divisions within Christianity I can’t help but wonder if the cliche “united we stand, divided we fall” applies here. Many people who profess to be “Christian” also see nothing wrong with artificial birth control, sterilization, masturbation abortion, gay marriage and divorce and remarriage. How can we stand together when we are divided on these key issues? Christians in the first 500 yrs after Jesus death and resurrection prayed to be martyred, now we just hope and pray that we have health and wealth. Scripture tells us that if we Love Jesus the world will hate and mock us. We have to ask ourselves, if the world loves our music our morals and our doctrines are we truly “Not of this world” or have we embraced the emergent church and all that goes with it? God Bless.

@DISSENTNOW – You allege that the Catholic church knowingly covered up molestation cases and hid known pedophiles from law enforcement but can you give one example of where that was proven in a court of law and the perpetrators convicted? Either your information is incorrect or law enforcement gave the Catholic church a get out of jail free card. Absolutely there were terrible mistakes made and in some cases things should have been handled much differently but you have to keep in mind that we are innocent until proven guilty. Jesus talked about Christians taking each other to court and admonished them to handle things within the church. The point being if every time someone was accused of molestation the church turned them over to the police the courts would be full of pastors and ministers accused of improper conduct. Ask yourself this, if a Priest was known to have molested a child why wasn’t the Priest arrested? Why wasn’t there an investigation? Many of these cases were brought after the Priests were old or had passed away or where there was not enough evidence to launch and investigation. Yes there were molestation‘s that occurred and yes the cases weren’t always handled properly but the rumors and misinformation surrounding this scandal are many. If you research this you will find that proportionately this occurred and is occurring in all denominations, not just the Catholic church. God Bless.

Sure. I can give you plenty of names. I was raised Catholic and i’m from Boston ( does the name Bernard Law ring a bell? ). How about John Geoghan? The Catholic Church knew for years that Geoghan was molesting children. Instead of informing the police they reassigned him over and over again. They even sent him to a shrink. Last i checked, the Catholic Church settled a 10 million dollar lawsuit.against his victims.
This cycle of abuse is simple to explain. Its how teachers get away with molesting kids for years ( are you prepared to defend the teachers union with the same zeal as you defend the Catholic Church? ).
A lot of kids don’t report sexual abuse because of the shame and embarrassment it brings on. This abuse can go on for years until people start becoming suspicious of the way that the molester interacts with children ( too touchy feely, too playful, ect ). This is where the police should be notified. Instead, when you reassign one of the molesters you are allowing him to continue harming children. This is my beef with the Catholic Church.
Never underestimate the power that a child molester has over his victims.

Your feeble and pathetic excuses to excuse and whitewash the culpability of the RCC is disgusting. YOU are disgusting. I’ll not even address your “spin” as it does not even warrant a “wrong, buffoon”.

Yes, the RCC was not the only church targeted by gay pedophiles. Yes, even the public school system was rife with pedophiles, and similarly hid the sub-humans rather than handing them over to a lynch mob. YOU THINK THAT IN SOME WAY ABSOLVES THE RCC FROM BLAME???

Let me guess: YOU are gay, aren’t you? I ask this because your un-logic, blame shifting, denial and claiming your own behavior is OK since someone else also behaved horribly are stereotypical gay ‘arguments’ (or lack thereof) we all have become all to familiar with. Answer honestly if you have the fortitude. I expect no answer at all, or some (also typical) derision to conceal your inability to answer.

@VoteRight, I agree with your post. Any person or organization who doesn’t take action to protect children, whatever it takes, deserves to be ridiculed and chastised, even prosecuted whenever possible. Be it the Catholic Church, Joe Paterno, schools, or the “mother” who ignores the signs and keeps her boyfriend or new husband, they are all as equally to blame for the harm that comes to children as the perpetrator themselves.

What I must take issue with is your characterization of “gay logic”. I’m gay, and I deplore the child molester and anyone who aids them as much or more than anyone else. I will not excuse, apologize for, or try to rationalize the actions of people who could harm children. If I had my way, the sub-humans (as you rightly call them) who prey on children and steal their innocence should be drawn prone in the public square and have their genitals removed with a blunt, rusty axe. (Too harsh?…nah)
A better term for your description would be “progressive logic”. Gays come in every color and stripe. Unfortunately for those of us who are not mind-numb robots, the progressive movement has enjoyed near complete success in recruiting and using many gays to further their cause. Trust me when I tell you that they do not speak for me, or many other gay people, any more than the Al Sharptons and Jesse Jacksons speak for all blacks. They give me a bad name and it really plsses me off.

Indeed, fast and pray for all involved, that they receive a deep and everlasting healing through The Holy Spirit, and find salvation in Jesus Christ. He came into the world to suffer God’s wrath for the sins of the whole world, for all time, no matter how grievous anyone’s sins are. To do otherwise is to denigrate the Blood and Water poured out for the expiation of all sins. The Church in the past 12-15 years have been vigorously restructuring the entrance process into the seminaries and working with law officials for any accusations made. What happened in the past can not be undone, and to continue to criticize and tear down the Church after addressing the wrongs and hurt which happened serves no one but Satan.

Gathering from your latest reply, you evidently don’t want to pray that all who were involved to receive healing through The Holy Spirit, which is a sign of humility and love for Jesus Christ. Your post also shows you refuse to acknowledge the Supreme Authority of Jesus Christ to forgive all sins. That the Church for the past 12-15 years has vigorously worked with authorities when any accusations are made. That candidates for the priesthood are even more heavily screened, and if there is anything questionable in their past they are dropped. Period. I make these statement because you refuse to even acknowledge them in your reply. And no, recognizing past events which can not be undone does not mean approval, nor mitigates the seriousness of the offense and harm done to the victims. It’s stating an objective truth. I did not suggest criticizing child molestation is serving Satan. I did state the continued tearing down of the Church does serve Satan, for Satan is the enemy of The Church, which is The Bride of Christ.
Finally, your reply to my prior post is done in the tactics of Saul Alinsky, that being, misconstruing the statements proffered in an argument, and to make personal attacks.

Turning the word “discrimination” into a derogatory term is a trick of the Progressive. We must all hone our skills of discrimination to determine right from wrong, good from evil etc, in order to be safe and make effective decisions. Yes Libs; EVERYONE DISCRIMINATES EVERY DAY OF THEIR LIVES.

God repeatedly explained His ways in the Bible, it is up to us to learn these ways so that we can effectively discriminate between the things of God, and the things of man.

Homosexual marriage violates the very foundation of the covenant of Marriage itself. The homosexual lifestyle is a sin just like the covetousness and deceit that we are all guilty of. Just because it also happens to be a social order these days DOES NOT MEAN that we should embrace it as “A-OK”, this puts the ways of man before the ways of God.

Of course, many homosexuals justify their lifestyle by becoming atheist, or joining a PC, pseudo-christian church which solves all the problems of violating God’s ways rather easily by simply ignoring the rules altogether.

The groundswell of sexual aberration in America is something that has been seen in every decadent society in history, we are no different. You can blame our problems on the evil Jewish bankers and the global oligarchs, or the Church but we are being shown (for the millionth time) that when you turn your back on God, and he withdraws his blessings. America, will you come back to God’s ways?

Yes, the word discrimination has been changed from a word that describes “discernment” to a word that means “exclusion” and “prejudice”. This is only one of a thousand words progressives have adopted/corrupted to their own cause.

As to the Church’s stand on gay marriage, I have no problem with it. I understand the implications and consequences of changing definitions. That‘s why I’m totally fine with calling a SS union a “civil union” or anything they like, so long as everyone is afforded equal protection under the law. The law is not in place to impose values, that’s what parents and churches are for. The law (and govt) is supposed to protect individual rights and its citizenry from outward attack. The church says being gay is as wrong as gay marriage, right? Do they advocate for the law to outlaw homosexuals? No, nor should they. That puts us on the path to theocracy in the same vein as Iran. We must all coexist together and leave people to their own values, so long as they don’t intrude upon others or their rights. The state attempting to limit the rights, privileges and protections of one couple because it doesn’t fit the value system of societal norms is tantamount to forcing everyone into one belief system. Freedom and liberty are fragile things, and sometimes inconvenient. Unless you find it okay for the state to tell you that you can’t leave the house on Sunday, you should not be for allowing the state to force others into your belief system.

Sometimes I think that frameing the issue as sin VS goodness is a mistake. One does not need to be Christian to believe in natural law and/or logic. An abnormal/unnatural act, sodomy, is so deviant as to be “self evident. As obabama has homosexualized the military, sodomy and bestiality has been deleted as chargeable offenses under the Uniform Code of Military Justice. The military has been sucked into the morass of political correctness. One of the last bastions of defense against the Marxists. All persons in the military fall under the UCMJ and give up constitutional rights. Now they also have had their freedom of association rights deleted.

Atilla; it’s a nice thought, however precious few could attempt to do so reliably. This breed is arguably far fewer than 10% of the population and many are this way because they are believers.

We have been given the guide book that we should be using. It was written by 10s of different authors, from nearly every walk of life over the course of 1000s of years. It is perfectly cohesive and reinforces it’s tenets and themes across the entire library of books that comprise it. You also see the NONE of the authors wanted the glory of their writings for themselves, in fact quite the opposite. The existence and nature of the Bible is the signature of God himself on His creation that we admire every day. How can you explain that the most popular book in the world draws no royalties to anyone and is free of all the usual taintings of the ways of men. You will not find ANY other set of guidelines with this kind of pedigree, anywhere. This is why we must read it, learn it and teach it to our children.

The rules are very simple and they will bring you a better life than you have now, a life with real meaning. Let’s not allow ourselves to think for a minute that we can solve the problems of the world without God and his instructions.

Thanks for posting this. Its got a lot of information, some of this I knew as an ex psych major when the APA caved and stopped defining sodomy as a perversion, not for scientific reasons, but political. I did not know the large number of so-called gays who while defining themselves for political reasons and power as queer were actually having sexual relations with the opposite sex and the homosexual community in their own literature knows there is no gay gene, and they admit sexuality and identity is a fluid thing and as long as those among them who are taking opposite sex lovers continue to identify themselves for political purposes as homosexuals and lesbians…amazing how twisted and perverted this agenda is, we need to go back to calling this what it is an abnormality that can be cured. The radical queers know this, their greatest fear is the rest of us find out. Its driven by politics, not science. Its a learned behavior and they detest the fact because the immorality of it they hate being confronted with. Great post.

At last some theologians are standing against the violation of natural law and biological fact. Perhaps at some point they will stand against the killing of unborn children as well. If you ever had a doubt about what homosexual marriage means read the Homosexual Manifesto circa 1970 or 71. It is not about “marriage” it is about normalization of abnormal behavior. It is about accepting the unacceptable. End of story.

Comments made about molestations are a digression from the homosexual marriage issue. In the 1960s the Catholic Church allowed homosexuals into the priesthood with the understanding they would be celibate. Many homosexuals grabbed the opportunity to have access to trusting young boys . It is from the 1960s seminarians these molesters emerged.
Homosexual marriage is an oxymoron, a contradiction. Not possible. As G. K. Chesterton said:

Another point not often discussed is that the (Liberal) conventional wisdom of the 60‘s and 70’s was that pedophiles could be “rehabilitated” through counseling and therapy. Sadly the church accepted this and many predators were ordered to undergo counseling and therapy and reassigned to other parishes. This only worsened the problem.

Excommunication does not excuse the crime of covering up for known child molesters.

And of course you have never sinned and therefore have no right to comment on anything: most men sin; it doesn’t mean the Church is wrong; your anti-Catholic bigotry is showing. And if all men were called to be quite if they sinned, no one currently could ever speak a word and we would have total chaos. As one priest I know commented: “there’s always room for one more hypocrite like yourself”—we never declared the Church impeccable, only infallible in matters of faith and morals: look up the difference.

Ok, so the priests who molested the boys are to blame for the crime of child molestation. I agree. The Catholic church, however, that knowingly covered up for the child molesters by moving them around and hiding their crimes is to blame for covering up those crimes. So, yeah, i feel perfectly justified in blaming the Catholic Church for that.
And as far as my sins…..I‘ve made my fair share of mistakes but molesting a child isn’t one of them!
And as far as my anti-Catholic bigotry……I was raised Catholic. My parents are Catholic, as are most of my family. There is no bigotry on my part. I, personally, want no part of an organization that gives aid and comfort to known child molesters. Good job assuming about my character, though. You know what they say about assuming…..It also says a lot about your character.
So, keep supporting an institution that supports child molesters.

Thank you…yours is the first opinion I find here that I can agree with. Marriage in itself may well be defined by our creator as man and woman–which is fine. I sometimes wonder if we are caught up in semantics. Marriage is also defined as two people that want to share their love with one another. I personally believe that being gay is something that is biological, and not something that people wake up and decide to “go against the grain”. I don’t judge them, for lest I be judged for my sins.

They want the law to discriminate against gay couples. Discrimination is not a Christian value,” said gay rights campaigner Peter Tatchell….. but homosexuality or gay marriage is?
Christian values DO discriminate against sin, evil and abomination of any kind. The whole purpose of Christs’ ministry was to teach people how to shun sin to be able to return to our father in heaven. That IS IN FACT discrimination against satan and all he stands for.
Liberals are satans’ pawns by definition.

Every Year My NJ Catholic Church Decorates The Inside of The Church with those Gay Rainbow Flags.

Even though parishioner complain about this the flags remain up. The reason given is… silence.
Many of the priests are now gay and see nothing wrong with gay marriage anymore. Its the same old same old “condemn the sin not the sinners…”

Of the new priests 34% are gay. One does not know if they remain celibate. They certainly will not tell.
Why are they there? A sinecure? They can be on the down low while collect a paycheck?

The number of reported priest cases is down from the peak in the 1970s, but is there a lag in reporting?
I’ve looked at part of the John Jay report. Finding good statistics is still hard given all the reporting.

You can’t piss off the poophers and not expect some screaming and scratching eventually. Still can’t figure out how the LGBLTers and the MusBros, and the climate poophers, and OWSers all fit in the same tent. And, is there really any diversity at all inside that tent when they are all screaming about their own pet peaves and who decorated? How does that happy crap work? Al Gore, Rue Paul, Ackmadimbojob, Pelosi, and Mikey Moore need to get together, hold hands, swap some more spit and get us through these turbulant times. Clearly.

‘The archbishops’ message came after Pope Benedict XVI on Friday denounced what he called the “powerful” gay marriage lobby in America and told visiting U.S. bishops to not back down in the face of “powerful political and cultural currents seeking to alter the legal definition of marriage.”’

Ron Paul stated in his book (Liberty Defined) “In a free society…[all voluntary and consensual agreements would be recognized]. “There should essentially be no limits to the voluntary definition of marriage.”

“Everyone can have his or her own definition of what marriage means, and if an agreement or contract is reached by the participants, it would qualify as a civil contract if desired…Why not tolerate everyone’s definition as long as neither side uses force to impose its views on the other?“ Problem solved as usual with ”Dr Liberty”, Ron Paul, lol.

So if a pedophile decided to define his marriage between him and 6 year old boy or girl, you’d be okay with that? We already know age does not matter with those people. If a man or woman define marriage between them and their dog, horse, other other animal; you’d be okay with that?

How about we keep it the age old definition since day one where it is between a man and woman. It worked back in Biblical times, it still works today. I don’t want some perverted group to decide they want to redefine marriage to get benefits or define themselves as normal. They aren’t normal. That is all it is about. It has nothing to do with the sanctity of marriage and any gay couple that tells you this are liars. If marriage is so great for gays, why are many now getting divorced?

Gay men are confused people. Somewhere along the line they felt rejected by an same sex member and chose to emulate the opposite sex member; the one who showed them love and understanding. If you look into most gays background you will find the male members rejected them or they had no male in their lives as a mentor. With women they were mistreated badly by men, so they turned to women who were like them.

COFEMALE. Understand where you are coming from… most definately. Ron Paul and the “other” left have the same ideals when it comes to the slippery slope. They will say “consenting” adults should do whatever their little degenerate hearts desire. It’s more than just a marriage issue with Libertines and Libertarians just part of the game to bring us to a less moralistic and values oriented society in the name of “Freeedom and Libertyyyyy,” It’s a BS argument like drug legalization.

Paul calls himself “strongly pro-life“ and ”an unshakable foe of abortion”. Who else on the Republican side can say that and has not flip flopped like a fish in the sand? Our Choices are still a joke and the election is only months away.Gingrich does not favor an overturning of the Roe v. Wade decision. Then again we have had 4 Pro Life Presidents since Roe V Wade. How many have outlawed abortion? Zero. Obama is Pro Gay.Is Gay Marriage made legal yet?

Population trends may be impacted significantly. As Gay lifestyles become the norm and gay marriage legalized, there will be an impact on birth rates that are already declining in the US to the point that if the trend continues, Caucasians will become extinct while Islamic cultures birthrates continue to trend up. The impact of gay marriage on Islamic cultures will be insignificant do to the taboo against homosexual relationships.
