Bill Donohue Says Contraceptive Mandate Will Be Fought in Court, Maybe in StreetsThe battle over the Obama administration’s contraception mandate continues to heat up. On Monday, Bill Donohue, president of the Catholic League, made some bold proclamations regarding just how hard the Catholic Church plans to fight the government’s requirement that religious-affiliated schools and organizations cover contraceptives and abortion-inducing drugs.

“Never before, unprecedented in American history, for the federal government to line up against the Roman Catholic Church,” said Donohue. “This is going to be fought out with lawsuits, with court decisions, and, dare I say it, maybe even in the streets.”

Here, Donohue is calling for Catholics and supporters of religious freedom to join in peaceful protest against the mandate. Similar action (peaceful marches and events) has been taken in New York City, where religious groups have converged to fight a local ban on the use of public schools for worship.

Donohue and church leaders, no doubt, hope to harness the power of the nation’s 70 million Catholic voters, to pressure the president to stop what they see as an attack on religious freedom.

As the Blaze reported on Monday, the Catholic Church has pledged to fight the regulation as fervently as needed to ensure it is overturned. Anthony Picarello, general counsel for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, has called the White House’s information regarding the matter “misleading and wrong.” He went on to say  that the church plans to ”pursue every legal mandate available to them to bring an end to this mandate. That means legislation, litigation and public advocacy. All options are on the table.”

But liberal Catholics like House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Maryland Gov. Martin O‘Malley disagree with the church’s stance on the mandate and have pledged their public support to the administration. On Sunday, O’Malley said that there is “a little bit too much hyperventilating” over the regulation.

Currently, there are two petitions on the White House web site. One, entitled, “Rescind the HHS Dept. Mandate Requiring Catholic Employers to Provide Contraceptives/Abortifacients to Their Employees,” stands opposed to the mandate. As of 9 a.m. ET on Tuesday morning, there were 23,336 signatures (a total of 25,000 will require the federal government to comment on the petition within 30 days). The opposing overture that supports the mandate currently has 9,296 signatures.

While proponents of the regulation continue to come out in support, the angst being created as a result of what many see as an open assault on faith and religion is continuing to intensify.

    This administration either DID this Purposely to insult the existence of Catholic doctrine, as he would previously with the Jewish Faith . . . . . . . .OR . . .it (He) is so far out of touch with everyday humans

If the Supreme Court decides in favor of Freedom of Religion over Federal Law and Regulation, this will set up the situation that will allow Sharia Law to over-ride State and Federal Law.

      Can anyone tell me what it is about this man that makes him think he’s got a mandate to force people to do whatever he wants, even if it violates their right to choose action based on their own thoughts and their religion? Is this the ultimate God complex or what?

      For a man who states his support of wholesale genocide (abortion) based on a woman’s right to choose, this dude has a lot of problems with other people having the right to choose on anything else.

      What troubles me most however, is that 20 years ago, this kind of tyrant would have even been eschewed by the DNC. Now it’s welcomed by over 40% of the country. Please turn off your ipods and xboxes and hit the reset button on the brains folks.

The rest of us must not allow an exemption for the Catholic Church we must stand for repeal on the grounds that Federal intervention in personal free will choice, which is the jurisdiction of a God given liberty.

      Now you know how those fanatic muslims feel about being told by outsiders what they should or should not believe in their own countries.As a catholic myself and though i see donahue as a thin skinned islamaphobe-i agree with him on this one. it‘s one thing to accomodate the state in a ussr police state say or else they’ll shut you down completely but in the land that champions itself as the defender of religious liberty -this is unacceptable.of course though the church brought this on itself when it separated its religious mission with its charitable mission to get funding.By uncoupling the two this collision was bound to happen .The church could remedy this by recounpling both-each person hired should be hired as a member of a lay religious order whose primary mission is to impart the faith and beliefs of the church.Whether janitor,professor ,doctor etc-as a formality evey emplyee hired should have that in their contract-they are a member of an order hence the religious protection clause would apply.Catholic charities should be under the diosean jurisdiction[the bishops] and they would be protected.       One can consider this an attempt at a dhimmi tax on pro-life churches and other religious establishments. If we don’t stop it here the Bill of Rights is dead. Like Glenn has said in the past, the left is fascinated with the power of Sharia law and this is an imitation of it including the idea of Dhimmitude for all who refuse to kill children and worship Baal.     What is a “liberal Catholic” ? Either you believe and follow the church‘s teachings or you don’t. Those who don’t, like Pelosi, cannot call themselves Catholics. The Catholic Church is not a democracy. Catholic dogma is interpreted by the church hierarchy and the Pope has the final word. In matters of Catholic faith, the Church considers him to be infallible. Don’t think Jesus came to “ put a chicken in every pot” and think our politically correct Catholics have forgotten his message. The respect for human life is really the crux of this matter .       The Old men like the Bishops and Bill Donohue, who cover-up the actions of the priests, are now fighting to dney their female employees healthcare. That is the issue. The issue is should the female employees at Catholic Universities and Hospital recieve less coverage than others because of the views of a few old men.

      The old men that lead the Catholic Church are driving American Catholics away, they are hypocrites and fools they are playing politics with healthcare. Overwhelmingly American Catholics support worker rights, the Catholic Church is using religion as an excuses to deny those rights.

    This is an election year, Obama knew that this mandate would enrage all religeous people, not just Catholics. The question is WHY NOW?

    Either Obama is stupid, and he isn’t, or he plans to stay in the Oval Office regardless of people’s anger or election results.

      Personally, I think you’re both misguided, but I and most atheists I know will side with Catholics because you at least have become a more rational religion over the centuries. Don’t forget, there was a time when Christianity was horribly violent and cruel, you have just mellowed out over time.

      There may a time when Islam calms down but it obviously won’t be for awhile so, I‘ll side with the Catholics because they at least don’t want to kill me for not thinking there is a God.

      The majority of Catholics disagree with the Church and support worker’s rights. The Catholic Church is not defending their religious views, they are seeking a way to avoid providing full medical coverage for their female employess at the Hospitals, Unversities and schools the Churhc has. This is an employment issue.

      Another unrelated note: This isn’t just Cathoics here, this is everybody. Who in the hell gave any government entity the power to force me to fund something for somebody else? Nobody, that’s who. This mandate is a slap in the face of all of our liberties, not just the liberties of specific Christian groups. As long as the Catholics fight the good fight, I’ll stand with them, but if they fold (again..Vatican II), I’ll still fight this.

    I don’t think Catholics will riot. I think they will organzie against Obama.. many of them are his supporters… to vote him out. If there are riots they will be staged with catholic signs and paid fake catholics

    The arrogance of anyone in government to think that they have dominion over our lives.
    They do not own us. They should attend to that which the federal government is meant to do and that is to defend the United States from its enemies. This task is problematic if they call good evil, and evil good.

      As I Catholic, I welcome and appreciate ALL who will fight against this religious oppression by the Obama administration. Please, let’s not dwell on what separates us…we are all Christians. Let’s band together in the name of what we have in common, and stop the persecution! United, we will win. Divided…I hate to think what might happen.

      There is something a bit karmic about this though;while you anti muslim bigots were busy crafting local laws against sharia-totally innane laws – laws were being crafted against your religion.[my religion too].I would love to see the pope take the lead here-though as individuals we have a right to our conscience-any catholic who PUBLICALY take a stand that violates the teachings of the church on dogmatic and theological positions regarding faith and morals is deliberately disobeying the church and undermining the teachings of the chuirch and so should get excommunicated. That means public supporters of abortion,artificial contraception, and PREEMPTIVE war.All these priests blessing the troops in these illigal unjust pre-emptive wars or these fox pundits pushing for war with iran would be excomunicated.Those who support torture, indefinite detention without trial etc.the church should step up to the plate and lead the flock instead of silently going along with these war mongers and anti semitic[against arab /muslims this time] genocidists today in the media and government.

    WAKE UP AMERICA ! This is when you have to consider that we do not have the whole story yet..Something is wrong here….In the middle of a election they are going after Catholic’s….this is just as bad as the administration not supporting Israel…..What is the real plan? As a Catholic I am outraged, but I am also guarded….watch the other hand…do not take our eyes off the ball…

      Someone very cunning and evil is writing this script. More staging. I guess we should look at the msm talking points to unlock this mystery. Because whatever they are saying is more propaganda that we should not believe but that might reveal what he is doing behind the scenes.

    Everyone expect that Obama will resort to violence and armed force shortly against those of the fatih who are now standing in opposition to his agenda; in Phoenix the local Imam leader publically declared he is standing with the Catholics on this particular subject – in his words:

    “When freedom of religious expression is threatened, we must, regardless of our differences in faith, stand for what is right in this nation.”

    Expect the top to come down with iron and steel, and the blood will flow in the streets shortly.

      LOVE: maybe Obama will Blame the Catholic Church/ Pope / Bishops ( Alinski taught them that it is more effective to blame individuals- character assassinations- rather than organizations ) for interfering in the ” affairs of state.” You know, Obama could pull a Henry VIII . Been done before to get a ruler’s agenda through !

      You are right Snow, I have said for some time now that something extreme would have to happen to ignite the anger of the middle class working people, and that when it did, as you said, blood will flow in the streets.

      If Obama gets away with this, then they will have monitors in our churches, and if the pastors preach the truth from the Bible, they will be arrested for hate speech against the gays or against abortion.
