Caught on Camera: Tanker Explodes at Gas Station

A tanker driver was injured Sunday when the vehicle exploded at a gas station in Melbourne, Australia. Closed-circuit TV caught the blast on camera, which occurred when leaked gasoline somehow ignited during refueling, the Australian Broadcasting Company reported.

Herald Sun:

Fire crews arrived at the petrol station in Stud Road, Rowville, at about 1am to find the tanker ablaze.

Another wall of flame up to 150 metres long, caused by leaked fuel, also burnt down the driveway of a nearby hotel, igniting two parked cars.

“There was another car trying to escape the flames that crashed into a tree, but I believe there wasn’t anyone injured in that,” Country Fire Authority (CFA) deputy group officer Peter Shaw said.

The driver of the petrol tanker was taken to hospital with burns to his arms and legs.

    Krieky!

Maybe the truck driver forgot to attach the grounding wire.

Less than 5 minutes after the explosion the mainstream media who happened to be there covering the event live, blamed it on a group of Muslims. In a few weeks Australia will start attacking random resource rich 3rd world nations on false pretenses. Meanwhile back in Australia the parliament has taken away all the civil rights of the Aussies at 3am while they all slept.

    To be continued….

Let me guess. . . It was George Bush and Dick Cheney really caused the fuel to ignite?

That would make sense LONGSHOT35, but what actually happened was Obama and OWS were in a secret meeting. Their spewings caused a monstrous bubble of superheated air mixed with methane to combust when all of the 99% simultaneously lit their crack pipes.

Wonder what the ignition source was? If you are in the US, it is less likely to happen, though. US fuel takers us a vapor recovery system that actually pulls vapors from the fuel tank back into the tanker truck. Also, there is a vapor release on the fuel tank that has to be higher than the buildings surrounding it and away from the tank itself. (I drive a chemical tanker just for anyone asking.)

I was 10 years old in 1965 when I was in an explosion at a gas station. A huge 18-wheeler had just filled up and the driver forgot to remove the nozzle from his gas tank. As he was pulling away, the hose snapped and the gas pump burst into flames. My mom, sister, myself & brother and our 3 month old collie puppy were in our car directly beside the pump that exploded we we were filling up, too. One flash and we were all scrambling to get out. Our puppy did not make it and my mom ended up in the hospital with 3rd degree burns for a month. It was horrible. It is amazing to me how people can be so ignorant around gas stations. They smoke cigarettes as they are fueling up – not giving a single thought to the vapors that are flammable and ever present. An explosion like this happens so quickly – in the blink of an eye. The only reason we made it out was because we were all sitting in the front seat (we were so small) and the car door was already open on the side away from the pump. If it were not for that saving grace, I probably would not be here. There was no time to pick up our puppy – not one fraction of an instant to spare. How that has haunted and grieved me over the years.

Once I farted near a campfire and the resulting fireball singed the eyebrows off of 10 people sitting around the fire. I am banned from most gas stations.

It makes perfect sense the flame would come towards the truck. The gas fumes propagate away from the source of the leak until an ignition source is encountered and the conflagration ensues. This is exactly the reason I never use a station that has a truck in the lot replenishing the gasoline supply.

Not only that .. but the gas going into the tank stirs up any impurities that have gone to the bottom .. I too never go into a station when the tanker is there .. for all the reasons stated.

      @Brntout

It’s hard to tell really, while the fire appears to travel the ground, it also looks like something else might’ve triggered it. Sadly the angle of the camera doesn’t tell us much other than the fire originated on the otherside side, blocking the camera.

Look at the slo-mo near the end of the vid. Something that looks like an electrical arc is visible near the front of the tractor. It does resemble lightning.

pumping fuel causes static electricity, the truck is supposed to be grounded to prevent this from happening. It can happen to you as well just filling up your private automobile. The fire comes back towards the truck because the vapors spread from the truck outward until it finds an ignition source and then flashes back to the source of the vapor. No arson here, just an unfortunate accident. Hope the driver makes a full recovery.
