Caught on Video: Polar Bears Destroy BBC Documentary Cameras

The Lookout:

BBC documentary cameras are no match, it turns out, for the destructive curiosity of your average polar bear. Producers of the BBC show “Polar Bear: Spy on the Ice” thought they could outwit their documentary subjects on the Arctic islands of Svalbard by concealing weather-resistant high-tech cameras inside casings that mimicked the look of ice floes and other snow formations. The idea, apparently, was to capture the unguarded rounds of polar bear life in the species’ natural habitat, in the general style of the successful Animal Planet franchise “Meerkat Manor.”

But the inquisitive bears weren’t taken in by the ruse.

And who will pay for the unnecessary deaths of the tens of polar bears who choke on the pieces of plastic and rubber used to cover the sensitive electronics?

My thoughts exactly… The video was TOO funny, but I worried that the bears would eat the camera, wires, batteries!

They DID look very heathly and well fed. And I thought the Ice was GONE???

I bet the USA paid for those BBC cameras with funds from the first stimulus bill, so I’m sure they will be replaced with funds just approved in the lame duck package. I am sure Obama can squeeze the funds from the federal government spending of $2.6 million to make sure prostitutes in China drink less on the job. And where is PETA and the EPA on this one?? The last four surviving polar bears in the wild……..eating plastic and styrofoam…oh the pain.

Interestng that the researchers have such an apparently steep learning curve of their own, in that they repeatedly make their remote cam housings out of quite thin plastic which the bears have no trouble destroying in short order, along with many, many thousands of dollars’ worth of custom electronic and mechanical equipment inside.

I guess the cost doesn‘t matter to them because it’s all Government (Taxpayer) funded and so if they need more equpment they just buy more and the costs are passed on to the taxpayer or, in the case of the BBC, the public TV license holders of the UK. Nobody is going to publicly object to additional funding requests for polar bear research, since so many have been duped into thinking that AGW is a reality and we’re responsible for a supposedly impending polar bear extinction.

Also, those remote cams require high-current batteries, oftentimes liquid / wet-cell ones, which could cause electrical shock to a bear if they’re bitten in a particular way….not to mention the plastic or metal parts of the mechanism and housing which could cause the excruciatingly painful death of a bear if ingested. A person who truly cares about the welfare of the animals would have thought that making the housing quite robust in order to protect the equipment investment as well as the health of the bears would have been a top priority, but when you’re riding the Government gravy train on a lie I suppose these plebian worries get pushed to the back burner.

That being said, the video is still cute ;-)

I hate most nature documentaries because they push a liberal agenda and they are so PHONY. All of the sounds are manufactured.

Animals have no morals. That is why cats often abandon their kittens, monkeys rape each-other and homosexual behavior is present in the wild.

These guys were idiots to think that would work. Bears best senses are their NOSES, not their eyes! They could no doubt smell those very strange odors and hear the sounds emanating from those snowballs, icebergs, etc. Only the humans who created them are visually-oriented. Expensive lessons!

This just shows that God created the animals with more logic and brain power than we give them credit for… Maybe they don’t need the ice as much as we think that they do and they will survive/evolve into another bear species that will then evolve into another and so on and so on. Isn‘t God’s Creation wonderful!!!

This leads to the question of who is actually fooling who…the scientists fooling the bears or are the scientists fooling the scientists? After all, the scientists are the same ones claiming the increasing number of polar bears means they are approaching extinction and that Global Warming is a bunch of made up garbage.

Do you think the British version of the EPA (if there is such a thing) will require warning labels for the bears in bearish (their language), saying “Do not eat the machines, dangerous if ingested; eat the humans instead, more fat retention in their bodies.?”

I think the polar bear would have been friendlier and less inquisitive about taser defense cam. 150k volts if they got too close. They mistake curiosity for the need to kill and eat anything that moves or makes noise. Those bears have only one reason to investigate the cams. They want to eat. next Cam should be armed with a taser and some bear spray. Stop wasting cash on cameras.

Duct tape some cams on Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, Ramzi Binalshibh, Mustafa Ahmad al-Hawsawi, Ali Abd al-Aziz Ali, Walid Bin Attash and might as well send Eric Holder as well. Might get some good footage of the digestive track of the polar bears.

HAHA so true Joel, we are truly headed for a state of total control. Taxed for air emission, for the heating and cooling of the globe, taxed for working (while those who do not get paid), if we continue down this route there will not be much if anything we are not taxed for.

The U.S. Geological Survey predicts two-thirds of the world’s polar bears will disappear by 2050, based on moderate projections for the shrinking of summer sea ice caused by global warming. The bears would disappear from Europe, Asia, and Alaska, and be depleted from the Arctic archipelago of Canada and areas off the northern Greenland coast. By 2080, they would disappear from Greenland entirely and from the northern Canadian coast, leaving only dwindling numbers in the interior Arctic archipelago
