As a Western journalist covering the resignation of then-Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, CBS News correspondent Lara Logan was reportedly attacked by a mob of protesters while she and her crew navigated through the crowds in Cairo on Feb. 11.
According to a statement released by CBS News Tuesday, Logan was “covering the jubilation in Tahrir Square for a 60 Minutes story when she and her team and their security were surrounded by a dangerous element amidst the celebration.” After Logan was separated from the rest of her CBS crew, she was brutally attacked, the network confirmed.
The full statement describes Logan’s horrifying ordeal:
On Friday February 11, the day Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak stepped down, CBS correspondent Lara Logan was covering the jubilation in Tahrir Square for a “60 Minutes” story when she and her team and their security were surrounded by a dangerous element amidst the celebration. It was a mob of more than 200 people whipped into frenzy.
In the crush of the mob, she was separated from her crew. She was surrounded and suffered a brutal and sustained sexual assault and beating before being saved by a group of women and an estimated 20 Egyptian soldiers. She reconnected with the CBS team, returned to her hotel and returned to the United States on the first flight the next morning. She is currently in the hospital recovering.
There will be no further comment from CBS News and correspondent Logan and her family respectfully request privacy at this time.
Before relocating her crew to Cairo where the attack took place, Logan delivered this report from Alexandria where she lent a sympathetic ear to protesters and their anti-Mubarak message:

Posted on February 15, 2011 at 5:40pmI wonder how sympathetic she is now to their protest? I thought all the libs said these people just wanted peace and democracy, and were not violent? Bottom line, they are rabid animals who want to torture and murder anyone who doesn’t submit to their religion. What will it take for the left to wake up?
On another note, my prayers will be with this woman…what a horrific thing to go through. I hope she is able to mend the damage these filthy scumbags did to her some day.

Posted on February 15, 2011 at 5:40pmThis is absolutely too, too, funny! Not that I consider sexual assault funny normally, but a CBS reporter discovering the joys of islam is hilarious. Has anyone noticed the crowds of protesters in Egypt? How many are women? and of those women how many are not wearing the potato sacks over their head? Hello CBS according to islam if a woman is in public with her hair uncovered it is perfectly acceptable to rape her. Many women even in european countries with large populations of muslims have taken to wearing the headscarfs in order to avoid being raped. Egypt is much more secular than most arab countries but the women there still have to wear headscarves weather they are muslim or not in order to avoid being raped. Next time you see video of unrest in arab countries notice how many are women. Do you suppose the women are satisfied with their gov. so they don’t need to protest? He liberals, take note, DO NOT SEND FEMALE REPORTERS TO MUSLIM COUNTRIES! Normally I would feel bad for anyone in that position but this dumb blond asked for it. By the way, I’m female.

Posted on February 15, 2011 at 5:54pmOh please, have some sense of proportion here. Every “mob” attracts malcontents. *Women* were able to stop this, along with soldiers with honor. Doesn’t that tell you something about Egypt? We have malcontents here as well, who join peaceful and honorable gatherings to cause trouble, does that mean we’re bad as well?
Think about this:
She was dressed normally, and didn’t have to be in some inhumane Islamic costume to be there.
She was defended by women(!) and that is ok there.
She was defended by a military of honorable men.
It wasn’t like the whole crowd was piling on her.
Let’s not get hasty and call Egyptians bad because a few misbehave. The Muslim Brotherhood is trying its best to co-opt this, and are failing by all accounts thus far, for all we know they were the ones doing this and they got called on it. Also keep in mind that there are Egyptian Christians there in the protests as well, for the protestors cause. What does that tell you?
The world is a complex place sometimes, and not everything fits a specific paradigm that we might want it to. Egypt is not some dust bowl filled with idiots like Iran, and it doesn’t seem as hell bent on being an Islamic kingdom as other places, give them a chance, hopefully this will usher in a new era of secular Middle Eastern states. We‘d all be thankful for that I’ll bet.

Yeah a group of women and 20 Egyptian soldiers!!! while not everyone in Egypt is like this, I think you missed RNMOM’s point. Which was why did CBS send her there after previous reports of attacks on reporters without more security or bodyguards. Because of your post I assume you are male and there for have no idea what it is like to have the threat of being raped hanging over your head. Even here in America, I won’t go down dark alleys or go on walks by my self at night because I know that as long as I am a woman there will always be that threat hanging over my head.

Posted on February 15, 2011 at 5:29pmWestern reporters really need to tread carefully there. I do hope she’s all right. Mobs are like that, many joining the mob simply to cause trouble or harm people, regardless of the cause.
It is interesting to note, unlike other Middle Eastern states, she did not have to wear any bizarre Islamic burqua (sp) or dress like a slave. Egypt has a lot in common with the West culturally, though few realize it, we really need to be stepping up and helping these people BOTH to support them in ridding themselves of a dictator AND to ensure that some bizarro fundamentalist Islamic government doesn’t take place.
Through private, non-government methods of course. Egypt is where we get a lot of our own cultural beliefs, they were a real civilization when we in the West were still out learning to smelt copper, and are intertwined in our history as a strong cultural influence. We owe them our support.

I’m not a subjectivist. I do think that there are a lot of things they need to change. They are not evil though (however, these mob running thugs, are). They’re trying to change things. Would you have them continue under a dictator that *allowed* those mutilations?
Who knows what will happen ultimately, but if they manage to throw off the dictator AND resist the “Muslim Brotherhood” they may well be a light finally lit in the middle East for Good. We can at least hope and pray for that, instead of instantly condemning them. They’re making fun of Obama for goodness sake, I mean hell, they’re half way on our side now! :)

Posted on February 15, 2011 at 6:01pmEgypt may not require the burka or even the hijab, but the cultural move toward its imposition has been steady and strong. Witness the graduation pictures that Mark Steyn points out from the University of cairo. 45 years ago the women all wore western dress. twenty years later half of them had hijabs. Today all of the women wore hijabs. I would not be surprised if a lot of men in the crowd looked at this reporter as a decadent women from America.
There is little hope that this will change for the better very soon, regardless of the political outcome.

That may be. But it’s not REQUIRED, which is my point. If they adopt if of their own free will, as individual women, then who am I to tell them otherwise? Should I thusly dictate to Christian women that because they don‘t go out in public in a bikini that they’re wrong?
Hope that made sense.
Report Post »Puddle Duck
Posted on February 15, 2011 at 6:36pmIslesfordian is merely pointing out that the culutral norm is heading in the wrong direction….how these countries view and treat their women is a major indicator on what direction the country is headed (IMO anyway).
Report Post »Islesfordian
Posted on February 15, 2011 at 7:27pmMy point is that in a culture moving toward muslim fundamentalism the hijab may technically be voluntary but many men will assume it to be compulsory and women will feel the force of that social pressure, especially as militant muslims view women who don’t wear the hijab as loose and deserving of abuse. It’s a sick mentality, and a sick culture, and many women who wouldn’t wear the hijab otherwise do so out of fear for their safety.
Conservative Christians do not tend to think women who dress immodestly are fair game for assault but many muslim men do because they are taught that their honor is attacked by the mere presence of immodest women.
CBS news should have known that in the chaos in the streets these elements of muslim fanatisism, which have been growing in Egypt for decades, would be much freer to operate. When there is no law you need to be extra cautious. I would never have allowed a women to remain in that environment.

Posted on February 15, 2011 at 8:52pmTifosa, how are those stats complied? Under sharia law, which is the de facto law in much of Muslim culture even where it isn’t de jure, a woman isn’t “raped” unl;ess there are male witnesses to say she was raped because otherwise it‘s the woman’s word against the alleged rapist and a woman‘s testomont counts for less than a man’s. Those kind of rules, embedded in Muslim culture, make it hard to prove a rape. And a woman who claims she had sex with a man but can’t prove it was rape is effectively adnitting to fornication. Thus most women don’t report it.
So your stats are completely useless.

Posted on February 15, 2011 at 6:51pmAny western women better know what they are getting into when they go to an Islamic country. I think it is very ill advised for them to go there due to the Muslim attitude toward the enemy and what is allowed regarding the enemy’s women. Remember that Islam transcends borders and secular governments. If you are an Muslim extremist, then you believe that you are part of a holy jihad against the west. If this is the case, rape is acceptable and considered a reward from Allah.
A question for western women to ask themselves before going on business assignment in the middle east: Is it worth the risk of rape?
As I stated in other posts, it is a common belief of Muslim men that western women are sluts and whores. Hmmmm. I wonder wherever did they get that impression?

HOW SHARIA LAW PUNISHES RAPED WOMEN
Hasan Mahmud
Hasan.mahmud@hotmail.com
On October 30, 2008, the United Nations condemned the stoning to death of Aisha Duhulowa, a 13-year-old girl who had been gang-raped and then sentenced to death by a Sharia court for fornication (Zina). She was screaming and begging for mercy, but when some family members attempted to intervene, shots were fired by the Islamic militia and a baby was killed. This happens in Sharia courts of other countries also. The village Sharia courts in Bangladesh, although illegal, regularly punish raped minor girls and women by flogging and beating them with shoes.[i] In Pakistan similar cases of punishing raped women are Mina v. the State, Bibi v. the State and Bahadur v. the State.[ii] Sharia courts in Pakistan have punished many thousands of raped women by long term imprisonment.[iii] It became so chronic that raped women stopped reporting to police.

This was a horrible, despicable act and you’re trying to distort the issue to make a cutesy slam of Islam and liberals . You seem to think that violence against women is a joking matter, and an opportunity to make yourself sound clever, at least in your own mind. How do you look yourself in the mirror? Rape is a crime of violence and nothing else.
You are a self-proclaimed Christian I take it. You don’t sound like a Christian though, making your funny remarks about the brutal abuse of another human being. Do know how many forcible rapes occur in this, our Christian nation each day? As Glenn says look it up. It’s about one per minute (http://www.rapetraumaservices.org/rape-sexual-assault.html). Not one per day, one per minute. All in this Christian of ours.
Your “Christians are better” angle is revolting to Christians and non-Christians alike. Should I tell you about Christian leaders who rape and abuse their flock (Jim Jones and David Koresh come to mind)?
I’ll tell you where the libs are on Muslim in Chief: don’t play cutesy with rape and brutality.

Posted on February 15, 2011 at 9:38pm@ JZS minor correction Jim Jones and Davey Koresh were cults not Christians……just saying……they really were cults.
Report Post »jzs
Posted on February 15, 2011 at 10:14pm@watchtheotherhand – I could argue that point. Jones was an ordained minister of Christ, not sure about Koresh. Both were born in this Christian nation, both proclaimed their allegiance to the Christian religion and God, both taught the Gospel, both – it can be safely assumed – prayed daily to the Christian God. Both spent their lives quoting the Bible from heart and spreading the Word of God. I’d say that makes you a Christian.
And how define “cult” that clearly separates that from a “loyal congregation?”
But of course you’re right. We know a lot about those groups and, after the fact, they can easily be defined as cults.
But on this website any crazy thing said by anyone who identifies himself as a Muslim is taken at face value as someone who represents to opinion of the 1/5th of the world’s population. Why is so easy to dismiss Jones as someone who was not a “real” Christian, and at the same time so easy to accept any comment from an unknown Muslim as a statement representing the opinion of all Muslims?
I will make this claim: you give an example of a Muslim behaving badly, and I’ll give you an example of a Christian behaving badly. We shouldn’t be so quick to judge, as Christ said.

Posted on February 15, 2011 at 10:16pm@ JZS definition of cult is the following……..groups seen as authoritarian, exploitative and that are believed to use dangerous rituals or mind control. They (Jim Jones & David Koresh) did not hold to orthodox mainstream Christian beliefs. The had their own perverted and twisted views where they were actually divine or Christ-like. This then called for their followers to submit to them as if God himself, leading then to their exploitation and eventually death. They were and have always been considered cults not Christians.

Posted on February 15, 2011 at 10:46pmTwo things:
1) If you are a blonde woman, PLEASE stay out of the Muslim world. Blonde women are highly prized by Muslims. Getting raped is not the worst thing that can happen to you. You might end up in a Muslim harem, and when you are no longer desirable, in a whorehouse or dead. Make no mistake, Logan was being watched all along; she was oblivious to it, because of the crowds.
2) This was gang rape at its worst, meaning they were planning to rape her and then kill her. There was an element of lust, but also of hatred against America, and we saw the latter play out against male reporters too.
I am incensed. It doesn’t matter that Logan was liberal and acted stupidly. She is a beautiful American woman, and evil and hatred against America does not distinguish between political parties. To those b@#&*^%$, we are just Americans, period.

Posted on February 15, 2011 at 11:00pmwatchtheotherhand, I thought we more or less agreed and that I was being conciliatory. Oh well.
You say that Jones and Koresh weren‘t true Christians because they didn’t hold, “orthodox mainstream Christian beliefs”. Who decides what orthodox mainstream Christian beliefs are? You? Are you equally prepared to differentiate “orthodox mainstream Muslim beliefs” from the ones you see on the Blaze?
How is it you so easily dismiss “Christians behaving badly” – if you ask me for examples I’ll give you a hundred – and so easily embrace any comment by a single self-proclaimed Muslim as representing the opinion of the 1 billion Muslims in the world?
Report Post »watchtheotherhand
Posted on February 15, 2011 at 11:10pm@ JZS I would agree lets judge individuals on the fruit they produce. But I would argue that any mainstream reporters covering Koresh or Jones would have reported them as cult leaders. They did not teach the Gospel of Christ because they both considered themselves the to be a fulfillment of Christ and they did not hold to any of the main doctrines of historical Christianity, but that is to run down a rabbit hole that is off topic. I think if we look at the totality of violence worldwide and oppression of women and harsh punishment carried out by Sharia courts for social transgressions it is safe to assume that teachings in the Qur’an lend themselves to the type of unfortunate events we see worldwide on a regular basis. It is not fair to characterize any religion on the basis of any number of individual crack pots, however, it is most definitely fair to judge a religion based on the overall fruits it produces over time. But this is just my humble opinion that I am sure many would disagree with. But I have quite a bit of evidence worldwide to support my claim. But regardless JZS I would condemn any evil act of anyone regardless if they were Muslim, Christian, or Atheist. Evil is evil regardless of the name tag that is worn. My aim is not a universal defense of any religion, including Christianity, because many evil things have been done in the name of God from many religions. However, just because someone says they are a Christian does not make them a true Christian with the understanding of the Spirit of God or His word. Yet when this self proclaimed person does something evil observers then want to “black eye” Christianity. That is simply unfair and inaccurate. Therefore I appreciate your acknowledgment of this in your previous comment !!

Posted on February 15, 2011 at 11:16pm@ JZS we were essentially in agreement….I think you are right that we need to be careful about what we say in regard to religions in general based on isolated incidents. Why did you challenge me that I was stating I was the supreme authority. Typically orthodox beliefs are defined by the length of time and numbers of people that have held those beliefs. That’s what makes Jim Jones and Koresh cults not because I say so, but because they didn’t hold to the same doctrines. I am not that arrogant that I think I am the evaluator of those type of things.

Even European borders were largely established based on religious or ethnic boundaries and where they have changed their laws they still maintain a cultural tie to their historical roots. America is the only major country that established borders based on agreement with principles. The bigotry that America has worked to overcome is a residual of the roots that colonialist and immigrants brought with them.

Posted on February 16, 2011 at 4:54pmI pray she will recover from this sickening assault by those ‘liberty’ seeking youth in the Arab world. If this is their idea of ‘liberty’, can you imagine what their version of ‘freedom’ is.

Posted on February 16, 2011 at 8:15pmGod I know this will come across as bad…here goes…What the HELL does sexual assault mean? Glenn said this evening she was repeatedly assaulted by 200 PEOPLE !….My wife came home and asked if I heard about the reporter who was RAPED. I’m gonna stick my neck out and say the reporter was grouped by a crowd within a larger crowd, many times larger crowd which did NOT assault her in fact some of whom helped the reporter escape. The Egyptian Army was among those who assisted. This is the problem with our NEW language, being grouped and literally man handled is disgusting behavior no matter what event is happening. I don’t know if she was raped,if she was raped by 200 men,I cannot imagine the physical and emotional. If she was grouped, remember this the next time a crowd of thousands engulfs you….and don’t go with AC 360…he can’t handle himself let alone a woman…wait that sounds bad…damn did it again !

I am saddened by your ignorance, and angered by your failure to see anything beyond your dogmatic ideology. The “wrong” here is plain to see for anyone. Your shame will follow you for eternity.

Posted on February 17, 2011 at 12:01amI’m saddened by some of the comments on this thread. What happened to this woman is deplorable and should not be taken lightly. Can someone explain to me why the hatred shown towards this woman, or is this another progressive infiltration of trolls trying to make some on our side look very bad?
Sadly, it did however serve a purpose… I’m betting this has changed her mind about the peace loving Muslims.

Posted on February 17, 2011 at 12:53amWHAT? NOT all those wonderful, peaceful, young people just yearning to be free!?! Our dear leader himself said the protests were mostly peaceful with “little if ANY anti-American or Israel sentiment”. SOMEBODY‘S lying here and it’s probably not HER battered body!
