Celeb Chef: Palin a ‘Froot Loop’ for Criticizing Obama Admin Eating Initiatives

Celeb Chef: Palin a Froot Loop for Criticizing Obama Admin Eating Initiatives

Chef Jamie Oliver (Jeffrey Boan/AP Images for FIJI Water)

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. — British celebrity chef Jamie Oliver called Sarah Palin a “Froot Loop” for criticizing the Obama administration’s healthy eating initiatives, and said getting healthy foods to kids is a civil rights issue.

The U.S. is in a “really dark moment” when it comes to children’s health and needs to make it a priority, said Oliver, who tried to transform the diets of a West Virginia town with his 2010 ABC show “Jamie’s Food Revolution” and is filming a new version in Los Angeles.

Improving what children eat at school alone can have a far-reaching, positive effect on their habits and health as adults, Oliver said Saturday during an Associated Press interview at the South Beach Wine and Food Festival.

He said he doesn’t have much faith that government will lead the way, but said the Obama administration is on the right track.

Palin, in contrast, “clearly on this issue is a Froot Loop,” he said.

The president recently signed a bill that increases the federal reimbursement for free school lunches and expands the government’s nutrition requirements for the free and reduced meals it subsidizes to cover all foods sold during school hours.

Some school groups argue it will be hard for already-stretched schools to pay for the new requirements, and Palin and other conservatives have argued that telling children what to eat is a case of government meddling, and that parents should decide what their children eat.

But Oliver, who launched his career in England as “The Naked Chef,” countered that he’s heard from pediatricians and dentists who feel some parents are edging toward child abuse by not feeding them healthy food. And he argued that the obesity epidemic is hampering the American spirit of problem-solving and ingenuity.

“From my view of the health situation we’re in at the moment, it really isn’t allowing Americans to be Americans,” he said.

But, he predicted that once a majority of the public takes to his ideas, things will change quickly.

“Americans, when you get them on something, will shift faster than anyone else,” he said. “I think America‘s going to react very strongly to what I’ve filmed in the last two months.”

When someone wants to cut the food supply by elimination cheap food that is not care for the animal who is to be food is not up to his personal standards. (cage birds vs. free range birds) and the food is not as healthy as he would like it. Is the froot loopy one.

I wonder how he feels about Halal killing techniques. When they have to kill the animal alive and let the blood drain with the animal awake. He most likely not care as long as it is healthy food forced by the government.

you media folks give him too much credit. Also, the kids hated his food….and just didn’t eat.

He is after “natural”. Michelle is not necessarily after “natural”, but healhy and not so fattening with empty calories

And, teaching a child to get a good education, to earn what he receives, to be honest, to work as an entreprenuer instead of as a union member, and to understand the difference between rights and entitlements will teach him responsibility for himself, too. Children need to learn what self-reliance is!

I completely agree with you, Showtime! I am all for eating healthy and getting exercise. I was fat when I was younger and finally made changes in my eating and fitness habits later in life because I took responsibility for my choices. I didn’t need the government to tell me what to do and I really doubt that they can make a difference. I had plenty of nutrition education in school but I still got fat. Now, I feel great and wouldn‘t go back to my old way of life but also wouldn’t think of forcing that same choice on anybody else. People have to decide what they want for themselves!

The child obesity epidemic in this country has more to do with 1. the lifestyles of the family. 2. Corporate love of poor ingredients in food. Parents typically work too many hours and feed their kids what is affordable. How is more tax subsidized food going to fix this problem? The schools could save a lot of tax payer dollars by cutting out all the waste. At my boys school they get up to three optional meals and the servings are such that if your kid was to eat it all (if they were told by their good parents to eat everything on their plate) they would be over 200 pounds. Also why are the free and discounted children getting options?? Oh yes we don’t want to single them out, but wait if I let my boys account go under they make him eat a pp&j sandwich. I guess that is to punish my son for his tax paying fathers lack of responsibilities.

      @Doc Who
My stepson is 16, eats like a horse and refuses to eat the healthy foods at school. We tried sending lunch to school with him, and found out that he was throwing it away because brown bagging it isn’t “cool. I can’t be there every day to make sure that he eats those healthy foods at lunch, sadly. As a matter of fact, he‘s been grounded several times over his refusal to eat at school because they didn’t have anything that he wanted to eat.. ie, no pizza, no burgers, etc. So it‘s not like the kids don’t already have healthy choices at schools. I cook good, balanced meals at home and he gets plenty of activity. He’s tall and thin. Most of his friends are thin, a frightening number of them are thin to the point of emaciation because they are afraid to “look” heavy at all and they starve themselves because they want to look “hot”. Which in their minds must be skin stretched over bone.
Everyone’s needs for their bodies are different. Working in dietary at group homes for the developmentally disabled, there were no anti-carb diets there other than the people that have diabetes, and that was dealt with through portion control, not WHAT they were eating most of the time ( I‘ve only worked with one brittle diabetic that couldn’t have sugars of any kind)
1 cup veggies, 1/2 cup starches, and 1/2 cup of meat for a meal is good for a sedentary lifestyle. My doctor told ME that I need 6 small meals per day rather than 3 larger ones to keep my metabolism up. If you stop eating regularly and don’t eat a healthy combination of protiens, fats, starches and veggies, your body starts breaking down on a much deeper level than just fat burning. You can’t overdo the veggies with children, or proper brain functions aren’t fueled.
Besides all of that, I don‘t care if MObama talks until she’s blue in the face, that’s her right. She has no right to try to legislate the idea that children don‘t need certain things while they’re growing. If she can stick her hand into what is being served on the school lunch menu, how long before they start trying to legislate what I can buy at the grocery store… oh wait, they’re already trying that. Can we say “trans fats” boys and girls?
And another point that has been made here multiple times. If you’re gonna stress a healthy lifestyle, you had better be willing to submit yourself to those same rigorous examples, or you’re nothing but a hipocrit that loves the sound of your own voice and your percieved control over others, more than you truly care about the health and well being of other people’s children.
MObama hasn’t started that diet of hers yet as far as I know…

@nickderinger, Jamie Oliver may be clueless in bringing up Sarah Palin, but I think there are several people here who don‘t understand that this isn’t about giving the government control over what our kids eat in school, they’ve already done that! The USDA already has strict guidelines as to what MUST appear in a school cafeteria. If you compare them to what is considered healthy eating by today’s standards, including the USDA’s own current eating guidelines, you’ll find they differ immensely. The school districts are forced to include unhealthy items along side the healthy ones by the USDA. Based on some things I’ve seen, I wouldn’t be surprised to find that the USDA is in cahoots with various food suppliers, as well, so that cheap foods that barely meet the minimum dietary guidelines, and are chock full of chemicals and additives that any dietitian would scream against, are being passed off as “healthy choices.“ ”Finger foods“ are becoming the norm as more and more schools stop supplying eating utensils in order to conform to the latest politically correct claptrap about ”no weapons in school.”

If the schools are going to provide lunch as service, and one which most of us pay for not only through taxes but voluntarily through school lunch programs, we should be getting what we pay for. As parent/consumers we should have a right to say, “Hey! I’m paying for this crap? No way. Fix it!” But right now the USDA says they know better than we do, and so the only control we have is to either live with it, or quit using the school lunch program for our kids (my personal choice, by the way).

So far, from what I see, this is about reforming the obscene food controls that are already in place, not making new ones. If the left has trouble articulating that fact, and laying blame where it’s really due, it doesn‘t change the fact that it’s already screwed up.

He has his right to his opinion! He has a point that getting kids to eat better is a good legitimate battle to take on, however expecting the government to play nanny and force people to “do the right thing” is not an admirable battle or argument. He has a cooking show, if he feels that adamant about it then he should take the initiative to spear head that campaign.

With that said I haven’t seen or heard Palin denouncing the administration for this initiative, but I would assume given her track record that her argument is that it should be the parents not the government making those decisions.

It‘s very amusing to see that it’s Sarah, who is Fit and Trim and Lovely. It Is Sarah Who Exudes The Healthy Lifestyle.

Whereas, the plump twins, Jamie and Michelle — Not So Much! The plump twins exude the liberal lemming lifestyle and agenda, which is — Do As I Say and Not As I Do and Follow Blindly!

I care! I care that a woman who has so much “junk in the trunk”, a posterior the size of Texas and make “a pork fest” her daily routine can tell me and my kids what to eat!

I get it right, this is all about the food IN schools, not what i feed my children, right? Its about the government feeding the kids right IF they have to feed them, right?

Give your kids all the food you or they like, nobody hampers you. But schools should not sell unhealthy food, why wouldn´t you aggree?

If this was all about making us feed our kids this and that i would be angry too. But it aint…

Sarah Palin isn‘t saying that kids shouldn’t eat healthy; she‘s saying it’s not the governments’ job to decide what kids eat. You also have to take into account the hypocrisy of the Obama’s when it comes to eating habits.

Why should it matter what the Obamas eat? But, take a close look, they aint fat, are they?

And the goverment DOES feed these kids, because they eat at school. They already decide what our kids get to eat, why is it bad when they decide its healthy food?

Oh, i get it, its from Obama, it must be bad. Let the kids be fat, else the progressives will win!!!!!

Wow…. A cook from England said this, it must be true. Cooks know everything that is why they have such complex jobs that most of the world’s population can’t do.
P.S. This is sarcasm; I just wanted to let all the leftist know. A few of them may even know what sarcasm is.

This guy gives me nausea. He doesn’t even look like he grooms regularly. At least he is wearing clothes now.
Oliver left school at the age of 16 so this makes him an expert on nutrition and children?!!!! Seriously, this guy has the audacity to come to America to preach and do a little name calling. Hey Jamie, where is your next stop after leaving your friends in South Beach, the White House or perhaps Hollywood? Go home before I vomit.

The question is not “what food should be in public schools” the question is “should there be public schools”. For the daft/left, the answer is, no.

Governor Palin has been encouraging healthy eating long before Mrs Obama took it upon herself to involve the government in telling parents how to raise their kids. During her state of the state address in 2009 Governor Palin said this:

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yMPPx7-Rwxk&feature=player_embedded

Both Governor Palin and Michelle Obama believe in the cause of fighting obesity.

Governor Palin believes in educating parents and children on how to take care of themselves, but ultimately leave that up to the parents, while Mrs Obama believes government needs to do it for them.
