Cell Phone Justice: Woman Arrested After Talking Too Loudly on Amtrak Train

There’s a classic episode of “Seinfeld” where Elaine’s boyfriend is a “close talker” — someone who seems to invade everyone’s personal space while carrying on a conversation. And while passengers aboard an Amtrak train from California to Oregon recently may have not met the “close talker,” they did get to know Lakeysha Beard, who has a similarly annoying habit: she’s a “loud talker.”
In fact, Beard was talking so loudly into her cell phone during the train ride — and refused to quiet down — that she was eventually kicked off the train and arrested by police for disorderly conduct.
Beard’s arrest was caught on video:
KATU-TV reports:
Salem Police stopped an Amtrak train on Sunday afternoon after reports a woman threatened other passengers when they complained she was speaking too loudly on her cell phone.
Lakeysha Beard of Tigard was charged with disorderly conduct after police said she got into a “verbal altercation” with passengers on the train. The other passengers complained she refused to put down her cell phone, even after train staff made repeated announcements for passengers to not use cell phones, according to police.
When a passenger confronted her about her loud talking, police said Beard got aggressive. She had reportedly been talking non-stop on the phone since getting on the train in Oakland, Calif.
Beard was taken into custody until a family member could come and pick her up.
Anyone who has ever sat next to, or been around, a loud talker may be smiling. Still, the best part of this story might belong to AOL: “Pardon the Boys Who Threw the Chatter Off the Choo Choo.”

I am seeing a very bad trend. Are they above the law? Their attitude is “screw morals, values, etc….screw you”. I hate to think like that but I am seeing this more and more. Walking into an elevator before people can get off, nearly running you over as you cross through a crosswalk. Not moving politely if on a crowded sidewalk. Rude to waiters/waitresses is restaurants. What happened to morals? Values? Being polite? I am seeing this happen at a very alarming rate and it is getting to the point that it is becoming dangerous.

Talking loudly is not disorderly conduct.
Talking loudly in a library where there is an expectation of quiet is a little different.

It was her unwillingness to cooperate with the train staff and that she threatened other passengers when they asked her to be quite. Those things will often get a person arrested. If she was doing this on a plane she would have gotten arrested too.

I’ve witnessed it in department stores, hospitals (where you are told not to use your cells), waiting in line at a restaurant, in a restaurant (while trying to have a conversation with your friend or mate), in restrooms, etc. Nine times out of ten, it’s black women. They think they own the world, the space where they are standing, and they don’t care who hears them or their conversation. Half the time you can’t understand them due to their ranting and ebontics. They act like a bunch of monkeys or apes. It’s truly disgusting, and it’s past time the law did something to keep it under control. Next step would be to stop drivers from texting and talking on their cells while driving. Numerous times I’ve seen mothers with children in their vehicles texting and swerving from lane to lane on the interstate. There are too many accidents because of cells. I someone should invent a cellular that stops working when in a moving automobile! This would be such an accomplishment.

Then when they get indignant I say, “Oh, I’m sorry. You were speaking so loudly I thought you were talking to me, and I didn’t want to appear rude by not answering you.” Works every time.

She was disturbing the peace and when asked to stop, she didn’t and probably raised a ruckus on the train so at the next stop, she was taken off the train and arrested. Perhaps she should think about not talking so loud that her conversation is disturbing those around her who paid for the train ticket the same as she did. Common courtesy and all.

I’m just being antagonistic, but seriously, everyone knows how to act in public except some people.
I grew up riding the RTA in Cleveland, and I’ve seen MUCH MUCH WORSE!!
People talking loudly and having total disregard for the persons in their immediate vicinity is fairly normal where I’m from. We just ignore it for the most part, and try very, very hard to get a car, because it’s too pervasive. Everyone is talking loudly and being generally obnoxious like in prison. It’s never quiet.
There is simply NO WAY for this to be policed without interrupting everyones’ day. People will simply overwhelm the system. You have unreasonable expectations if you think being in cramped spaces with strange humans is going to be a pleasurable experience.
Everyone should chant “STFU” to her and have fun doing it.

How about you realize a minimum level of “common courtesy” is required while in confined public spaces. No I do not want the behavior police but if someone is going to be beligerent and thumb their nose while disturbing everyone else, something needs to be done by authorities or people will take matters in to their own hands. Trust me you do not want to go down that road. I’m sure there are passengers that would have loved to tie her down & gag her for the remainder of the trip rather than see her kicked off.
Sorry to break it to you but when people are confined in a small little box, the minimum level of behavior should not be outwardly disturbing to other passengers. This is how we get along and not beat the crap out of each other. Try to learn the difference between Political Correctness and civil common courtesy.

Imagine this person had been at a town hall meeting and wouldn’t shut up about Tea Party stuff when all the democrats in the room wanted them to can it. Then this person gets arrested for disturbing the peace. How would you feel then?
But it’s ok, right? This person was black and talking on the cellphone loud like the cliche’ says.

I imagine she was using a government sponsored phone where she doesn’t pay anything but can talk all she wants where as the taxpayer has to watch those minutes and usage or you pay more. The easiest way to get her to “speak softer” would be to start talking loudly to the person next to you about her personal life gleaned from her “open” conversation. I bet she would have said a few nasty things, but then would have spoke softer.

And then she has the nerve to threaten people who ask her to shut up. I love the pained look on her face as she exits the train, like we are suppose to feel sorry her..
