‘Censorship’: Ron Howard Not Cutting Gay Joke From Film

Despite demands from gay rights activists and scoldings from the media, including CNN’s Anderson Cooper, Oscar-winning director Ron Howard will not be removing a gay joke from his new comedy film “The Dilemma.”
“I don’t strip my films of everything that I might personally find inappropriate,” Howard told the Los Angeles Times on Friday. “It is a slight moment in [the film] meant to demonstrate an aspect of our lead character’s personality, and we never expected it to represent our intentions or the point of view of the movie or those of us who made it.”
That slight moment comes from actor Vince Vaughn, whose character calls electric cars “gay” during a meeting in the movie.
“Ladies and Gentlemen, electric cars are gay,” Vaughn’s character Ronnie Valentine says. “I mean, not ‘homosexual’ gay, but ‘my parents are chaperoning the dance gay.”
Vaughn has defended the joke: “Comedy and joking about our differences breaks tension and brings us together.”
“If storytellers, comedians, actors and artists are strong armed into making creative changes, it will endanger comedy as both entertainment and a provoker of thought,” Howard, who says he owns electric cars, added.
Cooper — who is reportedly* homosexual — disagrees. During a recent appearance on Ellen Degeneres’s show he said that the word “gay” should become a term that is “unacceptable,” especially in light of recent gay bullying cases:
In response to the critcism, Universial Pictures has replaced the trailer with one that does not include the joke.
That, however, does not go far enough for GLAAD ( the Gay and Lesbian Aliance Against Defemation) President Jarret Barrios.
“At a time when so many in our country are speaking out against the bullying of gay youth, Universal was right to acknowledge the offensive nature of this ‘joke’ when it removed it from trailers,” he said in a statement reported by the New York Daily News. “Hopefully in the future, Universal and Ron Howard will recognize the power of their words and use their films to bring people together rather than drive us apart.”
“I believe in sensitivity but not censorship,” Howard responded on Friday.
*This word has been changed from “openly.”

Posted on November 1, 2010 at 5:34amHomosexuals have been around for 6000 years. I’ve been around for 67 years. There will always be just two genders, male and female, just as there will always be deviants within each gender who desire sex with their own gender. That’s okay with the rest of us. All we ask is that these deviants leave us and our children alone. Do whatever you do to each other away from our sight and we will not interfere. Since homosexuals do not procreate they must recruit new members from heterosexual families. With the advent of the AIDS-driven PC movement, homosexuals became a victim class with superior rights. With invitro-fertilization, adoption and liberal courts, homosexuals can now either breed or otherwise obtain their own stock of defenseless recruits. Since their entire life is structured around a single aspect of human existence, namely the sex act, the children adopted by Rosie O’Donnell and others are sentenced by society to legal sexual abuse from birth. Keep in mind that homosexuality, abortion, porno, promoescuity and statism are all indications that our Republic is nearing it’s end. its-over.info

Are there statistics on kids of gay parents than prove these kids grow up messed up? I grew up next door to a boy and a girl who had an openly gay dad, they turned out just fine (and perfectly straight, both are married with kids now). It depends on the person, not their sexual orientation. Gay people don’t talk about sex or make out in front of their kids any more than straight people do – and those who do, shouldn’t, gay OR straight! But you can’t paint everyone with the same brush.

Posted on November 1, 2010 at 4:28amIt’s not the word itself, it’s using it to mean lame and insipid instead of simply as a synonym for homosexual – kind of like using “jew” as a verb meaning to chisel somebody. That being said, I’ve heard gay people jokingly use the word this way themselves. I don’t know any gay people who would be offended by it in the context of a joke delivered by a blunt-spoken character. I suspect that many of them are embarrassed by the idiots who make a big deal out of stuff like this instead of concentrating on their real problems.

Thus why it goes back to the PARENTS to parent their children!

Posted on November 1, 2010 at 3:52amThis is a frightening trend…criminalization of speech. And with respect to the use of the word “gay” instead of “homosexual” and equating that to the politically correct “n-word” is beyond belief. The word “gay” was a word that the homosexual community invented. It was not considered a negative term…. it was the word that was created to express/describe their own lifestyles by they themselves. And now it is a potential “hate crime” word? What word are they looking for people to use? And this plan to teach “compassion” to children… what is that all about? Let Americans teach their children faith based morals and standards, and they will learn compassion. This move to teach kids “compassion” in the school is a move to a state indoctrination of children in order to create kids in the image of the state…..DO NOT LET THAT HAPPEN. We do need compassion…but it is not the place of the state to teach compassion. It is the place of a parent, family, church to do that. The health care act has empowered the state to be responsible for the adult formation of children….from self esteem, to sexual identiy and relations, to parent/child communication and on and on. Be forewarned. This is not about “compassion”. It is about stealing the youth of america to indoctrinate them in a progressive agenda and a socialist/world government. Nothing is as it seems. It is all smoke and mirrors. Jesus said that the poor you will always have with you. It is the same with bullying. Bullying is not new. and it will only go away when people turn back to faith…. not the state.

Posted on November 1, 2010 at 8:54amI agree – bullying is not just a ‘gay’ problem – the truth is the majority of children bullied is not because of their sexual orientation. Weight is probably the biggest reason and Michelle Obama telling kids they are ‘fat’ instead of concentrating on getting kids to exercise more is not helping. I can see a campaign to eat right and exercise but her focus seems to be more on ‘size’ which only highlights a child with a weight issue making them targets for the bullies.

This is so true, when you give a gay person truth, they turn and gnash on you with their teeth and the hatred that they have for Christ utters forth from their mouths. (an evil man out of the evil abundance of his heart brings for evil things) That is why they curse Christians and Christ.

Posted on November 1, 2010 at 2:59amwhat i want to know is, why are some men getting more “equal”/ womens rights than most women are?
Report Post »Hasn’t anyone noticed, that the world of femaninity is being taken over by men, while the workforce is constantly being flooded with low paid women who are apparently just exercising their right to be treated like men and not like baby machines?
Is this what equal rights has become? Is this what the life of women has become? to be manipulated by ‘gay” men, who hate “gay” comments, and be told all about how to be a real “woman” by them???????
Womens rights movement is just like carbon pricing in the political spectrum…..it pays the bills ( tax free foundations and charities/money laundering services) and keeps crooks in power!
Women always had equal rights, equal responsibilities, and equal strengths and weaknesses. The issue is, men becoming drunkards and beating up women, who in turn, are told by religious morons and lawyers of yesteryear that they must have sinned or broken the law to have been beaten by their husbands.
The issue is, husbands were never held accountable to damages suffered by the wife in domestic violence related incidents, and single mothers with no welfare often end up turning tricks to survive, instead of being given oportunities to start businesses of their own or work close to home in well maintained employment. Times, and laws, have changed…..women have rights too, according to the law. Women are NOT just extensions of their husbands anymore.
You’ll note, that in most instances, gay women do NOT complain about someone using the term “gay”, nor do they argue about rights of the ‘gay”….women have been bisexually active most of their lives when you think about it, and thats not being rude, I’m just stating, women often go into changerooms together, while men, well, real men, would rather not have their friends around while they are in the changerooms……..not saying abything about sportsmen in showers, more the changerooms at the fashion stores.
Women have to start taking back the role and responsibility of women, before men dominate that world too, via anti gay legislation and special gay rights. Why should they be given for free, what women have battled hard for all along……..that being, respect for who they are!
Lets face it ladies………gay men are COMPETITORS in your market of expertice! Are you just going to sit there on the fence and let them steal your men? I wonder how many “i didn’t know i was gay until I met barry” styled lines will be delivered to wives the world over in the next few years, once gays are legally recognised as “families”………..

Still, it seems to be a basic human need to have an enemy…. And some people just need to feel themselves a victim…. pitiful! My generation believed you could expect to be bullied and that STICKS AND STONES CAN BREAK MY BONES BUT WORDS WILL NEVER HURT ME! When did we stop teaching that? About the time we stopped teaching AMERICA IS GREAT? WIMPS! We need to teach our kids how to be tough, because tough days are upon us! Too many single moms maybe. The Progressives sure did a job on the American family when they preached FREE LOVE in the 60′s along with free birth control pills so we could whore ourselves out, girls. 1) If Vince Vaugh’s character is defaming anything it is Electric Cars, not homosexuals.
2) The point Ron Howard makes is that he is trying to explain the character, and that line does – it has a lot of unspoken meanings and those help move the narrative along without a lot of dialog that could drag the story down. That one line speaks volumes, it is very effective.
I can’t hear someone say “so-and-so is gay“ or ask ”is so-and-so gay?“ without in my head saying ”…not that there’s anything wrong with that!”

The left just openly admitted that the movie industry, and entertainment industry for that matter, is meant to educate people on how they should live, eat, drink, speak, and sleep even. This is indoctrination. If the character in the story would have said such a thing, he should say it. Ron Howard is far from conservative and i happen to agree with him that his screenplay should not be censored if that is what the story requires. The double standard on things found offensive by certain groups are overlooked completely such as conservatives being called everything in the book which we do find offensive but cannot, nor even attempt to censor the dialogue in movies. Mincing words for the sake of political correctness makes for no dialogue whatsoever. If it wasn’t for conservatives tolerating it, yes, tolerating it, most actors would have nothing to say on screen at all. A good movie can be made with little dialogue, by the way, e.g. Soldier with Kurt Russel where he hardly speaks at all. In fact, it would be refreshing to see a movie that did NOT try to teach us some moral lesson or preach at us about how evil free society has somehow destroyed the lives of others which is a lie most of the time especially considering that free society has provided MOST of the disaster and hunger aid worldwide. Typical progressive (regressive) thinking and ploys to rewrite history and silence those who would use words that don’t work in their histories. Ludicrous that we would get moral lessons from Hollywood and not from God. Then, there are the elitists in Hollywood that believe that is exactly what they are.
