Dramatic Vid: Chaos as College Students Pepper Sprayed While Trying to Crash Board Meeting

A group of rowdy students at Santa Monica College in California were pepper sprayed on Tuesday after they tried to storm a Board of Trustees meeting. The students are upset about a two-tier pricing plan to increase fees for certain summer classes, some of which were set to be axed for budget cuts.

About 12 students were allowed in the meeting, and the rest were supposed to file into overflow rooms. But the turnout was larger than expected, and about a hundred students then tried to storm and disrupt the meeting. Police eventually used pepper spray to disperse the crowd, and video captured it all:

Two students were taken to the hospital and police and the university are investigation the incident.

But while police may have been trying to protect the trustees, not all of them are coming to the cops’ defense. Trustee David Finkel called using pepper spray a “black eye” on the college, according to the Santa Monica Patch.

“I know some things happened tonight that I don’t like and a lot of you guys didn’t like,” Board of Trustees Chairwoman Margaret Quiñones-Perez added.

That might rub some the wrong way considering other video of the event shows students pushing up against police despite officers trying to remain calm and protect the meeting’s entrance:

The Patch has more on the plan that has the students so upset, which is simply a plan to save classes that have been the target of budget cuts:

The students called on the college district’s superintendent to hold a campus-wide referendum to recall the two-tier funding plan. The school is gearing up to use private funding to restore 50 courses this summer set to be eliminated in the wake of severe state budget cuts.

The cost to enroll in the classes would be about $180, significantly higher than the fees that California students pay—$36 per unit now thanks to state subsidies; nonresidents pay $275—but less than at California state universities and University of California, as well as for-profit colleges such as the University of Phoenix.

Students outraged by the proposal call it “privatization” and believe it will separate the wealthy from the poor. They want the Board of Trustees to instead demand the restoration of state funds.

The L.A. Times has more:

Under the tuition plan, believed to be the first of its kind in the nation, the school is creating a nonprofit organization called the Santa Monica Career and Transfer Alliance, which will offer the courses at full cost.

The foundation will offer about 50 class sections in courses such as accounting, art history, economics, Japanese, music history, speech and psychology — 18 courses in all. If the classes fill up, more will be added, depending on the availability of instructors and classrooms. California residents will pay about $540 per class and non-residents will pay about $840.

Students will be able to apply for some financial aid and the college is providing about 300 scholarships of about $300 each for needy students.

But any nuance was apparently lost to the students. They are reported to have chanted, “No cuts, no fees, education should be free!”

      Education should be free? Does anyone spend years in college to teach idiots for free? My guess… teachers, janitors, councilors… they need to eat too. Want a free education? Go to a public library. Though almost no one will hire you without that piece of paper that says you paid for classes even if you learned nothing in four years because you wasted your time partying and protesting against life – but isn’t it hip and cool getting pepper sprayed?

      Someone tell those numbnuts education is free all you need is a public library card. You‘re not paying of education you’re paying for the piece of paper that says your educated. If you want to complain about the high cost talk your government agency whose grants and scholarship programs have driven up the cost. Much in the same way medicare and medicaid has driven up medical cost.

      Let me get this right…overflow rooms were provided but that wasn’t good enough for the OWS-esque Jacobins? No…they demanded to enter the room where 12 of their number were admitted already for the simple reason that they wanted to shout down the discussion. So when police responded as they’ve been trained to when a crowd gets out of control…these “brave” students got upset when they were pepper sprayed. And what we’re these “noble” students demanding?       The government isn’t complaining because under the Affordable Care Act the Federal government purchased most student loans from the major lenders. My wife had all three of her student loans purchased by the Federal government and then consolidated into one large loan.

      Maybe someone should setup a completely “Free” College course. Here is how it would go overcrowded standing room only and because there is no tuition they have to find an instructor to teach the class for “FREE” and since they could not they will let the students teach the class, then a riot breaks out because they can’t settle on a student smart enough to teach the class and they start beating each other and throwing class room items at each other etc etc etc..

      As you see in my “Free” education society college is the New Romper Room/Sesame Street culture. How is that going to work vs Asian education systems that actually teaches.

      This is the product of several hundred years of universities and colleges acting as the gatekeepers to certain professions. The reason why public libraries were setup in this nation was to keep people from having to resort to attending a university in order to learn. Education is free. You pay for grades and if you have the knowledge but not the grades, you are unhireable thanks to these centuries of idiocy wherein a grade meant more than common sense and real knowledge.

      California is broke. What part of that do these students not understand. There is no state funding for the difference in what their fees are and the actual cost. Wake up you supposed to be educated not brain washed by the left progressive movement. Wake up or there won’t be colleges for anyone to attend free or otherwise.       Is it bad that I rewound it and watched over and over like 6 times? if they were protesting that the classes were going to be cut or the rates were going to be so outrageous then fine, I’d sympathise. But the whole education should be free thing took away whatever sympathy I had for them!

      i am 63{male}….mom 85 and i actually thanked her a few years ago because she made me as a youngster to do the household chores{she also worked} i was made to cook and wash dishes{by hand …{no dishwasher back then} iron, yard work cleaning bathrooms and laundry………………hated it then but glad i know now

      Well, these fools just learned a valuable lesson — there is no such thing as a free lunch. Someone will pay.

      It would also be interesting to see if they would be willing, or if they ever have, taught classes for free. There are plenty of people who need tutoring in reading, English and math in any community. Lots of little kids out there that can’t read well. So, you want classes for free? Okay, get out there and help by tutoring your community‘s students who are failing because they can’t read or add three numbers in row. Then come back and talk about free classes.

      You are right if they had to fund it themselves several things would happen.
      1. They would get better grades.
      2. There would only be courses offered that led to the probability of employment.
      3. There would be less student debt.
      4. There would be a modification of tenure.
      5. The states would be better off.

    I have two kids in college. Needless, to say I’d be fine if they got peppered sprayed for mob behavior too.
    Curiously, I‘ve notice the difference in kid’s attitudes regarding education 1) those who believe education is a luxury to be taken seriously- it’s their job to go to school and learn-so they may be responsible for themselves one day. 2) And those who want to chant and complain and party because an education is a right, the taxpayers will take care of me should I be unable to find a job in which I can use my art history degree.

    If they want their free education, then they can join the 1% and do what I did. Enlist in the US Military, get the GI Bill and then go to college. I know, its working for me and I am graduating next year with my Master’s Degree.

    I love how whenever they show these videos they act like being peppered sprayed is equivalent to being shot. It’s completely non-lethal and does no permanent damage. It’s annoying and painful, but come on, it‘s not like you’re going to die. Besides, these idiots who think that “protest” means “storm the castle” deserve it. There’s a HUGE difference between a peaceful protest and an mob.

      Yea seriously…. I had to get pepper sprayed for a job, and yea it sucked…. but I wasnt crying like that girl who acted like it was the end of the world, in the bottom left of the video. I still dont ever know why people go to the emergency room for that stuff….. IT DOESNT DO ANYTHING PERMANENT, or even for over a couple hours. Get over it and quit crying you hippies…!!!!
