Chaos Erupts: Protestants and Catholics Violently Clash in North Ireland

Chaos has erupted in Belfast, Northern Ireland, as masked Protestant youths have, once again, clashed with Catholics. Last night marked the second evening of intense violence. Police say that around 400 people took place in the unrest in Short Strand, a small Catholic community that is situated in a majority Protestant area. The incidents constitutes the worst sectarian violence in more than a decade. The Globe and Mail has more:
Masked and hooded youths threw bricks, bottles, fireworks and other missiles at each other, and at armoured police vehicles. Police fired more than 60 plastic bullets at the marauding youths.
Sectarian tensions typically flare in the build-up to July 12, a divisive holiday when tens of thousands of Protestants from the Orange Order brotherhood march across Northern Ireland. Last summer, more than 80 police officers were wounded during four nights of riots in Catholic districts of Belfast.
Deutsche Welle writes:
Violence is believed to have broken out on Monday night after pro-British protestant gangs attacked Catholic homes in the Short Strand area of Belfast. Gunshots were subsequently fired on both sides.
While the violence is contained to a relatively small area, its intensity is concerning. One photographer who was covering the protests was shot in the leg and is currently in stable condition.
Peter Robinson, North Ireland’s Protestant First Minister joined his Catholic deputy, Martin McGuinness, in condemning the violence and its perpetuators. McGuinness said, “A small minority of individuals are clearly determined to destabilize our communities. They will not be allowed to drag us back to the past.”

Furthermore, I do not fear the Muslim boogyman, and I deployed in Iraq. There is a much higher chance of me dying to a disease, car accident, natural disaster, and many other things than a terrorist attack.

You like many are missing the whole point regarding any group claiming moral superiority over another, particularly in terms of them believing they practice a superior religion. How can the US, one nation under God, continue to justify spending more than the rest of the world combined on its military but claim to be a good Christian nation. And be confused when the world questions our placement and maintenance in sovereign countries. It is difficult to travel extensively in the world and be able to rationally defend the presence of our military or question why it would make many people feel threatened by us. The US is my country right or wrong, but that does not make us always right.

Many forget, the KKK was founded by Protestant groups who were against European Catholics immigrating to the states. They would also burn the crosses of any Catholic church that was built in “their” country sides, that’s where the KKK cross burning rituals came from… That’s the Protestant history here in the US. Well played. Although, I would generalize religions to belief structures. As we are seeing more and more, there are violent zealots of science, ecology, animal rights… Anytime there is a belief held strongly, it will be used by some to motivate others into violent acts. It’s human nature, not religious nature; though I will argue that there are certain belief structures that make it easier to recruit those who accept to do violent acts on behalf of the belief structure’s cause. When any belief system teaches that the acts of others not believing in the cause will result in world damnation or peril, it is an easier vehicle to get people to ride as it provides the proper motivation and rationale in the mindset of those carrying out the violent acts.

You are correct, Ideologies would be the preferred term. I have to break it down to religions however, because this forum likes to highlight Muslim Injustice worldwide, but not highlight Christian Injustice.
I am not demonizing any belief system, because I believe that any ideology (of course there are few exceptions, like followers of Machiavelli) have good intentions. They always, in their nature, have an ability to be “hijacked” by people pushing an agenda.
Of course people on this site justify torturing, killing, and considering Muslims inhuman simply because of their religion, and of course justify it, by painting the Islam label falsely.

I’ll say two things:
1) The “famine” was only for poor Catholics, Ireland as a whole during that period exported just as much food as in other years.
2) the IRA brought the world the car Bomb.
Funny how Brittian has given all territories back around the world, yet still holds a postage stamp of usurped Land in Ireland.
What you see here, are dirt poor youth of both sides, KEPT in squalor. The struggle between them tacitly encouraged by those who fund the multitude of impregnable vehicles you see.
Take a lesson.
The overlords of the US have this very thing in mind for us.
Not all the cushy positions have been decided as you see Van Jones and others try to frame their side of the argument.
Meanwhile the government destroys the economy, robs your bank account via fiat $, and already has in place their own version of the armored vehicles and troops to man them.
They have left the borders open in hope of an outside trigger point.
The foment of racial and even religious tensions here combined with economic strife is intentional.
If you are busy with your own struggles, you don’t have time nor access to be bit*hing at them.
By the time the majority wake up, you are reduced to sticks and stones and garbage cans against
armored vehicles and superior trained troops.

If you wanna throw rocks (and “missles… ?”) at people, do it for a more sensible reason… maybe because they like decaf coffee and you like espresso, or maybe because they have a Beagle and you prefer Poodles. That makes just as much sense as fighting over religious differences!
